IELTS Reading Practice: Fill the Gaps Exercise

This is a great exercise of gap fill for students preparing for their IELTS Reading test.  This is not an IELTS test, it is a practice lesson to help you develop the skills needed for success in the IELTS reading test, namely: selecting key words to complete sentences by filling in the gaps. Always remember that sentences must be grammatically correct when they are complete.

Passage: Logical Mathematical Intelligence

Some individuals are able to learn just about anything using their logical skills. They are able to calculate and work out relationships and connections between items. They enjoy mental challenges seeking out solutions to logical, abstract and mathematical problems and have good deductive reasoning skills. They may simply excel at games involving strategy such as chess.

To exhibit strong Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, it is not necessary for you to be good at maths – the very act of selecting key points in a logical, systematic numbered sequence can be evidence of this intelligence. The very act of investigating and analysing allows you to go beneath the surface of what you may be learning so as not to simply take it at face value.

  1. The number of sales rose …….. 5,000 from 20,000 to 25,000.
  2. The percentage of boys playing sport was 45% as opposed ……… girls at 30%.

    1. The verb “fall down” is used only for people – not numbers.

  5. for / over
    1. There are a couple of possible options for this answer.

Answers for Copyright Multiple Choice Listening

Transcripts are useful to review your answers and improve pronunciation.

Copyright legally protects an author’s works and, therefore, is vitally important to book publishing livelihoods. Copyright protects against literary piracy, which is especially critical in this time of easy digital reproduction and distribution. It is extremely important to authors because it constitutes the ownership of one’s original work. Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as architecture, graphic works, , motion pictures, songs, lyrics, computer software and written works like novels and poems.

Answers

Remember, that your answer must be a letter. If you write the word or words, your answer will be marked wrong.

(1) C

Comments:

  • The audio does not mention anything about an author’s future work. It is about their current work. The answer is not A.
  • The audio does not mention privacy – this topic is about piracy (notice the difference in spelling). The answer is not B.
  • The audio is not about adulthood. The answer is not D.
  • The word “subsistence” means livelihood. This relates to an author’s income. Their book publishing income. This is answer C.

(2) C  F

You can write this answer as “C,F” if you want. The comma is not important. Do not write “and” or “&”.

Comments

  • C = films = motion pictures. The words “motion pictures” is an old-fashioned synonyms for films or movies.
  • F = words accompanying music = lyrics. This is a paraphrase.
  • The audio mentions architecture. This means the design of a building – not an actual building. The option A is wrong.
  • The audio mentions novels and poems. It does not mention ALL books. Novels and poems are only two types of books – there are some that are not covered by copyright. The answer is not B.
  • Computer components means “parts of a computer”. The word “software” relates to programs. They are two different things. Computer components includes physical parts as well as other parts (all parts of a computer). the recording only refers to software, not physical parts. The answer D is wrong.
  • Nature’s song is from birds, trees etc. The answer E is wrong.
  • The recording mentions graphic works but this is not the same as “public source graphs and charts. The answer G is wrong.

How many did you get right?

When you get an answer wrong, you need to think “why did I get this wrong?”. If the reason is because you didn’t know the words, then you need to build your understanding of English. This can be done by reading different topics and making word lists. See this page for links: Useful resources

Below is a multiple choice listening exercise about the topic of copyright. This topic has recently appeared in the IELTS listening test. This exercise is not an IELTS test. It is a practice listening exercise for multiple choice questions.

Always read the questions before listening to the recording. In the test, you will have time to do this. However, you can listen only once to the audio.

You might hear all options or words similar to options given. It is your task to focus on paraphrasing and synonyms to select the right answer. You can make notes while you listen. This truly is a test of your vocabulary!!

IELTS writing task 2 questions reported in December 2017. This list below contains questions that students have reported in their IELTS test. It is possible for questions or topics to be repeated. However, you should also prepare ideas for all common topics.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Questions December

A list of IELTS writing task 2 questions used so far in IELTS in December. I will continue to add more writing task 2 questions when students post them.

  1. Some people think that paying taxes is a big enough contribution to society, while others think people have more responsibilities as member of society than only paying taxes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
  2. In the past people liked to store knowledge in books. However, in the present, we prefer to store knowledge on the internet. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
  3. Some people say success in a person’s life as an adult is the result of the way he was brought up by his parents. Do you agree or disagree?
  4.  Some people say that travelling abroad is the only way to really learn about another country. However, other people say that it is not necessary to travel  as we can find enough information about other countries on the TV or through the internet. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
  5. Developments in technology make our life complex, and we should try to simplify our life and stay away from these developments. To what extent do you agree?
  6. Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their country. What are the reasons for this?
    What can be done to change this negative attitude towards international tourism?
  7. The use of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, is replacing face-to-face contact with many people. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
  8. Shopping online has increased recently. What are the effects of this trend on the environment and what type of jobs does it create.
  9.  Some people think that charity organisations should give aid to those who need urgent help wherever they live, while others say that these organisations should serve only in their country. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
  10. Competitiveness is a skill that is required in modern society in order to succeed. How does competitiveness affect the individual? Is it a positive or negative quality?
  11. Despite education being readily accessible, there are still adults who do not know how to read or write. What are the effects of this on those adults? What can the government do to prevent this happening?
  12. Some people believe that in secondary school (high school) student should study academic subjects like history and physics. However, others believe that in secondary school students should study practical subjects like car mechanics or cookery. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
  13. Wild animals and birds have started living in towns and cities. Some people propose to kill them, while others want to protect them. Give your opinion on both views.
  14. By paying more to employees based on their performance levels, you can keep their motivation high. Do you agree this is the best way to encourage employees?
