IELTS Model Answer for Bar Chart

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of women, men and children consuming five servings of fruit and vegetables each day in 8 years from 2001 to 2008 in the UK.

Overall, it can be seen that the highest percentage of all people consuming fruit and vegetables was women, while children consistently accounted for the lowest proportion. Furthermore, a significant increase in the proportion of people eating these food items can be seen over the period given.

The percentage of women who ate fruit and vegetables started at just over 20% in 2001. This figure then rose steadily to reach a peak of almost 35% in 2006, before falling slightly to 30% in the final year.

In terms of men and children eating fruit and vegetables, the rate remained relatively stable in the first three years (about 17% and 12% respectively). From this point, the proportion of men climbed gradually to peak at about 27% in both 2006 and 2007, after which it dropped to about 26%. A similar growth in the figure for children was evident reaching 25% in 2007 and around 24% in the final year.

Tips for Analysing the Model Answer:

  1. Paraphrasing does not need to be complicated. Not all words can be changed all the time. Choose which words you will and won’t change. Trying to paraphrase too often will result in too many errors and a lower score.
  2. Highlight highs, lows and trends in your overview where possible.
  3. Make sure statements in your body paragraph are supported by data.
  4. Make sure paragraphs are easy to see.
  5. Remember this is a report, not an essay
  6. Look at the logical organisation of information in the model answer above. It is easy to read and not confusing. If your report is confusing to read because you jump about with information, it is a bad report. All reports should be logical and clear.
  7. Check the linking words used.
  8. Note the variation in sentence structures.
  9. Don’t overload your report with too many small details – be selective.
  10. Aim for around 170-190 words. This model answer is 184 words in length. You do not need to write your word count on your test paper.

  1. what are your thoughts regrading what I came up with,

The data shows the proportion of women, men and children consuming five servings of fruit and vegetables each day between year 2001 to 2008 in the UK.

Overall, it can be seen that the highest percentage of all people consuming fruits and vegetables was women, while children consistently accounted for the lowest proportion. Furthermore, a significant increase in the proportion of people eating these food items can been seen over the period given.

The percentage of women started at 20% in 2001, steadily increasing to a peak of over 30% in 2006, and then gradually declining to exactly 30% in the final year.

In the case of men and children, the consumption of fruits and vegetables was relatively stable for the first three years. From this point, the proportion of men climbed gradually to peak at about 27% in both 2006 and 2007, after which it dropped to 26%. A similar growth was also seen in the figure for children reaching 25% in 2007 and around 24% in the final year.

    • This is a strong piece of writing that ticks the boxes for the four marking criteria. However, don’t forget to give the data for the first three years of children and men – you missed that out which could impact your score.

      • Thank you Liz, I would work on those points. Well I would need to ask I have my IELTS Academic test tomorrow. But, still it would be great if you could share me a section wise score for the writing task 1.

        regards,

  2. hello Liz could you check this for me please:
The chart illustrates the percentage of people who ate five fruit and vegetables per day, between men, woman. and children in the UK from 2001 to 2008.
As we can see, woman have the highest percentage of consumption all over these years, as apposed to children who have the lowest percentage. Furthermore men’s percentage of consuming five fruit and vegetables per day is less than woman and more than kids
Children’s percentages of consuming five fruit and vegetables per day in the first three years was nearly the same, between 10% to 13% , the same as men who was between 15% and 17%. On the other hand women’s percentage of consuming was going higher until
and 2006, where it went over 30%. After which it dropped about 26% between 2007 and 2008

    • The instructions for all writing task 1 are to write over 150 words. Most task 1 reports will be between 170 and 190 words. See this page to learn how to write an task 1 report: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-lessons-and-tips/. Learn first, practice second.

        • Even though this is a bar chart is shows change over a period of time. So, you must approach it like a line graph. Check my model answer and see precisely what information is highlighted in the overview that you have missed. And check the organisation of the body paragraphs.

  3. Hello Liz,
Thanks for your help and support. kindly check my writing and give your valuable comments please.

The bar chart below illustrates the percentage of men, women and children who consumed five servings of fruits and vegetables each day in 8 years from 2001 to 2008 in the UK.

Overall, women have the highest percentage of consuming fruits and vegetables people each day as opposed to children having the lowest proportion. Furthermore, the percentage of people who consumed these food items increased over the years.

The percentage of women who consumed fruits and vegetables was a little above 20% in the first. But, it steadily increased to reach a peak of above 30% in 2006 and then fall slightly to 30% in the final year.

Children and Men who consumed these foods maintained the same percentage of a little over 10% and 15% respectively for the first 3 years. The percentage steadily increased over the years with children a peak of 25% in 2007 and men above 25%. However, it reduced slightly to about 23% and 25% respectively in 2008.

    • Although my website doesn’t offer a feedback or marking service, here are a couple of comments for you and for others to learn from as well.
It’s a good solid structure with all the right information in the right place. You’ve highlighted key features.
Your issue is more related to language:
      1) An error with tenses fall = fell
      2) in the first = in the first year
      3) Children and Men (only one should have a capital letter)
      4) “The percentage steadily increased over the years with children a peak of 25% in 2007 and men above 25%.” should be “The percentage of both increased steadily over the years to peak at just over 25% for children in 2007 and around 28% for men in 2006, which remained the same in 2007 as well”. Review the use of “peak” as both verb and noun. You can find line graph language link on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-lessons-and-tips/. Even though this is a bar chart, it uses line graph language. Also pay attention that the figure for children was actually slightly over 25%. And also pay attention to verb + adverb word order.
      5) “However, it reduced slightly to about 23% and 25% respectively in 2008.” should be “However, by the final year the figures for both children and men reduced marginally by approximately 3%.

  4. I just learnt to write introduction and would love feedback on this:

The bar chart depicts the daily consumption of five percent of fruits and vegetables by UK residents between 2001 and 2008. Units are measured in percentage.

    • Just a quick comment. This chart does not show five percent of fruits and vegetables. It is about five portions of fruit and vegetables. This means each person each day had five lots of either fruit or vegetables. So they might have had an apple, a portion of carrots, a portion of cabbage, a portion of peas and one orange during the day = five portions of fruit or vegetables. This is the reason why it’s so important not to paraphrase unless you are 100% of the precise meaning and the precise paraphrase. It is better to repeat words than make a mistake with meaning.

      • Thanks, Liz, for the quick comment. I’ve realised I make a lot of mistakes, and I’m trying to improve my mindset to not make them. One doubt: should we put a comma before “and” or not? Most online grammar tools recommend it, but I want to be sure. Like, if I write “men, women, and children,” should I put a comma before “and” or not?

        • This is actually a point which is debateable. There are no fixed rules about this in English grammar and it depends on usage as well as the individual sentence. In a list, as you have mentioned, it is optional. In some cases, it helps the reader understand the individual words in the list, but in other cases the comma isn’t needed because the individual points in the list are clear and easy to understand. In the example you gave, there is no real need for a comma. But it isn’t wrong to use one either. It is not something I could teach here in a text comment, it would take a video to explain the debate behind it. So, in your example, use it or not use it, it would still be marked correct by the examiner in IELTS.

  5. so with this can we say the units are measured in percentage (%)

  6. Hi Miss! I am gonna take my ielts exam tomorrow. Generally speaking, task 1 essays seem easier than task 2 for me, wish me luck 🙂
The bar chart above demonstrates what percentage of the UK people from three various groups – men, women and children, consumed five portions of fruit and vegetables daily between 2001 and 2008.
Overall, what stands out from the bar chart is that all three categories followed roughly the same pattern, and women secured the highest portion during the entire period.
Regarding the period from 2001 to 2006, all classification of people witnessed a similar increasing trend. While nearly 17% of males ate 5 five portions on a daily basis, the proportion of women was twice as high as the percentage of children, at just over a fifth. Moreover, portions of children and men remained static till 2003 while women underwent an upward trend. It was followed by a surge for both males, females and kids from 2004 to 2006, reaching a high of nearly 27%, 35% and 23%, respectively.
However, the period from 2006 to 2008 was marked a steady decline for men and women, with a marginal improvement in the portion of children to nearly a quarter in only 2007. It is worth to mention that despite a reduction in all categories, women indicated the highest portion at slightly over 30% at the end of the time frame, furthermore, men and kids finished at 27% and below a quarter, accordingly.

    • My website isn’t aimed at providing feedback for writing, but I will make a quick comment.
      1) look at the overview and count how many key features are written in the model answer on the page above. You do not want a shorter overview because it is the most important paragraph.
      2) look at the body paragraphs and see how each category is tackled in a logical manner. You want this logical approach when you tackle any bar chart of line graph which shows change over a period of time.
      Good luck tomorrow!

  7. HarDuey says

Would it necessary to include “five servings” in: Overall, it can be seen that the highest percentage of all people consuming “five servings” fruit and vegetables was women?

  8. hassan says

The bar chart provided presents the proportion of men, women, and children who consumed five portions of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis over the course of eight years from 2001 to 2008. The Y-axis shows the percentage of individuals, ranging from 0 to 30 at the interval of five.

Overall, at first glance, it becomes clear that women consumed more vegetables and fruits as compared to men and children, while men were at the second and least amount of the fruits and vegetables consumed by children. While it can be noticed that the percentage of all people increased considerably over the given period.

In 2001, around 20% of women consumed fruits and vegetables; this figure started to rise significantly, reaching its peak of approximately 35% in 2006. This figure witnessed a gradual decline of almost 5% in the next two years.

In terms of men and children, men and children consumed approximately 15% and 10% in 2001. This figure plateaued over the next two years. In terms of men, this figure started to rise steadily and reached up to nearly 30% in 2006 and 2007 before falling back to around 25% in 2008. while for children, the percentage increased until 2007 and then witnessed a small decline.

    • My website doesn’t provide feedback, but I will make a couple of comments:
This is a good report and you write well. However, there are slight improvements you could make:
      1) don’t repeat information in the introduction. You have already mentioned the chart shows proportion so you don’t need to give the units of measurement again. This makes your second sentence in the introduction unnecessary. All unnecessary information will lower your score.
      2) don’t use “at first glance” A) this is informal B) an overview isn’t a first glance, it is an analysed and organised collection of key features. C) the linking word “Overall,” is all you need to start the paragraph.

      • Vidhi Patel says

The bar chart given shows the proportion of the females, children and males eating fruits and vegetable per day in UK from the period of 2001 to 2008.
Overall, 30% and above women ate the highest amount of fruits and vegetables in 2006 whereas only 22% in 2001 of the people had fruits and vegetables which was least among other countries.
To commence with, the percentage of women eating the food items was just over 20% in 2001. This figure rose steadily to reach a peak to almost 35% in 2006, before falling slightly to 30% in the final year.
Similarly, the children and men eating fruits and vegetables had remained same rate relatively stable in the first three years about males with 17% and children with 12%. Later on, the proportion of men had a gradual increase and reached to peak at about 27% in 2006 followed by children with 26% in the year 2007. The children having healthy food had a slight decrease around 25% in the final year.

        • Although my website is not to provide feedback on writing, I will give you a quick comment. All details of percentages are for the body paragraphs, not the overview. The overview provides a view over everything in description, not stats. Go back to my model answer and review the content of the overview. Then review all overviews on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-lessons-and-tips/

  9. The bar chart illustrates the proportion of children, men and women who consumed 5 servings of fruit and vegetables everyday in the UK, for a period of 8 years between 2001 and 2008.

Overall, it is noticed that women had the highest proportion of people each year intaking fruits and vegetables amongst all the groups, whilst children consistently accounted for the lowest.
A general trend of increase in the amount of people, in all the studied groups can be observed.

The percentage of women eating fruits and vegetable started at 20% in 2001, increasing gradually throughout the next half a decade and forming a high of about 36% in 2006, after which it saw a slight decrease reaching just above 30%

In contrast, men and children had a relatively stable 3 years between 2001 and 2003 staying at around 17% and 12% respectively. Over the next 3 years both observed a significant rise in proportion reaching almost 28% for men and 23% for children in 2006. Both the groups saw fluctuations in the following next 2 years and finally stabilizing at roughly 25% for men and 22% for children in 2008

  10. Saloni says

Hi Liz, Thank you so much for your answers. I always follow your videos. I have just one doubt in this bar chart example. Can I use “eatables” instead of fruits and vegetables in my report?

    • Unfortunately, you can’t use that word because “eatables” refers to anything you can eat whereas fruit and vegetables are fruit and vegetables. Always aim to be specific and accurate with information in IELTS writing.

  11. Hi, Liz, thanks for the high-quality essay as usual! I’ve noticed that you used “food items” to indicate “vegetables and fruit”, I wonder if “green food” can be applied here too? Thanks!

    • We use the word “green” when referring to green vegetables, such as broccoli and cabbage. So, it wouldn’t cover all types of vegetables or fruit. It’s also informal and too descriptive for report writing. IELTS writing task 1 is a report, not an essay. So, keep your language formal and if you describe categories or content relating to types of food, it would be “food items”. I’m just finishing filming a new IELTS video lesson about writing task 1 and you’ll see I use that expression in the video. As soon as I’ve finished filming and editing, I’ll post it.

  12. mary says

Hi Liz, thank you for your great contents. I have a question: can I paraphrase the UK to “the British people”? i was thinking this might not be accurate to some extend, but still wanna know your opinion on it. thanks!

    • Yes, it is fine to do this in IELTS. It isn’t necessary to start thinking about how many people in the UK are not actually British citizens. For the purpose of writing task 1, you can conclude that people in the UK means British people. The data and information are generalised.

  13. Palak says

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of men, women and children who consumed five portions of fruit and vegetables per day for a span of 8 years, starting from 2001 till 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that women were the biggest consumer of the five portions for all the considered years. Another pattern that can be observed is that the percentage of people who ate five portions saw a gradual increase till the year 2006, the year when the percentage reached its pinnacle. Post 2006, a slight decrease in the percentage can be noticed.

The consumption was at its all time low in the year 2001, when the percentage of women consumers was slightly more than 20%, which was still considerably above the percentage of men and children ( approximately 17.5 and 12.5 respectively). The year 2006, had the most consumption with representation of women reaching more than 32%, of men’s almost 27.5% and children’s around 22.5%. The increase in percentage from 2001 to 2006 for each of the subjects can be considered as almost 10 %.

Post 2006, the percentages fell down. For the year 2008, percentage of women consumers was almost 30%, while for men and children it was close to 26% and 24 respectively. So, there was an overall increase in the percentages across the 8 years.

  14. Really helpful it’s interesting.

  15. Soham says

In overall paragraph you have written was instead of were before women
so is it true or I am missing something?

    • You need to look at the whole clause, not just the word before the verb:
“…the highest percentage of all people consuming fruit and vegetables was women”
This sentence means “the highest percentage of X was women”
Now you see that the verb relates to “the percentage” and not to the word “people”.
I have a Grammar E-book for IELTS Writing Task 2 which covers clauses, verbs and many other aspects of essential grammar in my online store: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

  16. The chart illustrates the population percentage including men, women and children who intake five varieties of fruits and vegetables per day in the Britian for the past eight years from 2001 to 2008.
Overall, it is evident that the percentage of people consuming fruit and vegetables were significantly increasing from 2001 to 2006 and gradually decreased to 2008. Furthermore, the percentage of women were higher compared to men and children at its lowest.
The percentage of the women who consumed the fruits and vegetables in 2001 standing at just above 20% experienced significant increase to the peak of about 40% in the year 2006. However, the women percentage slightly decline to 30 % in 2008.
In case of men and children, the percentage of men and children in 2001 was above 15% and above 10% respectively which remain stable for the three years. The percentage of men and children reached to the peak at about 28% in 2006 and 25% in 2007. However, they both witnessed a slight decrease in 2008.

  17. The bar chart illustrates the proportion of women, men and children consuming five different servings of fruit and vegetables per day in the period from 2001 to 2008 in the UK.
From the bar chart it is clear that women consume the highest percentage of fruit and vegetables with a minimum of 20% throughout the years with an increasing rate till year 2006 at 30%, however, percentage slightly decreased in years 2007 and 2008.
Moreover, men’s consumption come in the second place after women with almost a constant consumption percentage at 12.5% in the period from 2001 to 2003, however, consumption rate witnessed an increasing trend in years 2004 and 2005, after which consumption rate was almost maintained at same level till year 2008 at almost 30%.
Finally, we can observe that children’s consumption come in last place with a stable trend in the period from 2001 to 2003, then consumption increased till reaching year 2007, where in year 2008 consumption slightly decreased to 25% compared to almost 27% in previous year.

  18. Namita says

The above bar chart illustrates percentage of men , women and children eating five portions of fruits and vegetables per day in the UK from 2001 till 2008.
In the bar chart we can observe that portions of fruits and vegetables consumed per day is maximum by women every year, starting with about 21% in 2001 till about 30% in 2008.
Whereas, men have gradually increased from 2003 till 2008, ranging from approximately 17% to 27% in 2003 and 2008 respectively and keeping a constant percentage from 2001 to 2003.
Lastly, the children have also shown a gradual increase like the men from 2003 till 2008, which ranges from about 12% to 23% in 2003 and 2008 respectively.

  19. Shukurali says

I have written only Introduction part of this Task 1 because of this I know how to write this part only until now.

The bar chart illustrates information about how much percentage of mans, woman and children who consumed five portions of fruit and vegetables every day in the UK over 8 years period between 2001 and 2008

    • Your technique is excellent. And I truly mean it.
The only issue is actually your English:
      1. either “gives information about” or “illustrates” without any other words
      2. “how much percentage” is incorrect English. Because the graph already uses those words, your only choice is “the proportion of”. If you can paraphrase safely, then do.
      3. “mans, woman and children” is faulty English. You need to use plural nouns “men, women and children”
If you could tackle your accuracy with English grammar and be more careful, you would have a perfect introduction.

  20. Hi Liz!
When can I use parentheses as it is in your model answer in the writing task1?
I’d like to know some examples.
    Thank you.

    • Your task is to use different grammar structures in your writing. For writing task 1, your task often involves presenting numbers and dates. One option for this is using brackets. But there are many other options and your task is to use a range. For example:
The number of people visiting a town in the UK dropped significantly between 2000 and 2010 (10,000 to 3,000).
The number of people visiting a town in the UK fell from 10,000 to 3,000 between 2000 and 2010.
The number of visitors, which was 10,000 in 2000, fell to only 3,000 by 2010.
      These are some examples.

  21. Reema Alshehri says

The chart illustrates the number of men, women, and children that consumes five servings of fruit and vegetables per day in the UK between the time period of 2001 to 2008
Overall, the highest percentages of people who consumes these servings were women whereas, the lowest percentage mainly accounted to children.

It can be seen, 20% of women consumed fruits and vegetables in 2001 which considers to be the lowest percentage in the women sector on opposite to men at 15% in both 2001 and 2002. The percentage of women gradually increased until it reached the peak of over 35% in 2006, before it slowly fell at 30% in 2008.

On the other hand, children have the lowest percentage for around 13% in 2001 to 2003 , then kept gradually rising until 2007 reaching a peak of 24%, before it slightly decreased to around 23% in 2008.

this took me probably 30 min please tell me is this too bad? and how could I improve this

  22. Bhumika Shukla says

I have written my answer –
The chart provides that information about the fruits and vegetable eaten by the percentage of men , women and children in the United Kingdom between the period of 2001 and 2008.
Overall, the percentage of people ate fruits and vegetables in given time period shows fluctuation as initially there is upward trend and afterwards it shows downward trend. Moreover, women are the one who had eaten the most followed by men and children.
The highest portion eaten by women is considerably more than 30% in 2006 whereas men has also eaten highest amount of portion of almost 27% and children percentage are around 23%. All the people had been counted lowest in their initial year which is 2001 where women are 20% (approx)and men are 17%(approx) and children are 12%. Although, almost 25% children which is their highest portion eaten was reported in year 2007 .

  23. Francesca says

    Dear Liz
I have a question concerning the Writing Task 1. I’ve been told that I should do comparisons just in the 2nd body paragraph, in order to have my Writing coherent and organized. However, I feel that this advice is not really appropriate. Can I do comparisons in the introduction and/or in the body paragraph 1 as well? Thanks for answering!

    • There is no such rule and to give someone such advice is irresponsible. Comparisons will go where they should depending on the type of task 1 you are given. Bar charts are charts which are all about comparisons so you will compare categories in most paragraphs. Line graphs show trends over time so comparisons might only be given once in the overview – it all depends on the type of task. This is why when you find a teacher who gives you a black and white rule, be careful. The higher band scores are all about flexibility which requires you to tackle each task individually. See all my model answers for writing task 1 and see which have comparisons and where those comparisons are given in the report: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-lessons-and-tips/

      • Francesca says

        Dear Liz
        Thank you very much!
Thankfully I can reflect on what I’ve been told and I’m courageous enough to disagree with the teacher in such a specific case ッ

  24. Require your valuable comments.

The given chart illustrates the percentage of people who ate five portions of fruits and vegetables per day in the UK from 2001 to 2008. Overall, the highest consumption was in 2006 and it shows that women ate more fruits and vegetables as compared to men and children each year.
Percentage of women ate portions of fruits and vegetables was just 20% in 2001 then it started rise steadily and reached up to almost 35% in 2006. That was the highest rate of consumption among all years then after 2006 it fell slightly again.
Moreover, consumption is less for children in all over the years as compared to men and women. In 2001, children consume only about 12% of portion of fruits and vegetables and it went as high as almost 23% in 2006.
In terms of men and children eating fruits and vegetables, proportion was almost stable in first three years ion between 12% to 17 % then significant increase can be seen from 2004.

  25. Dear Liza,
kindly to check my work and your valuable comments and what band i get for this writing , thankyou Liza

The provided chart depicts the percentage of UK residents from three categories, i.e., Men, Women, and Children, consuming five portions of fruit and vegetables per day from 2001 to 2008.
Overall, what stands out from the chart is that the highest percentage of all people consuming vegetables and fruits was women, while the lowest percentage was children. (women were constantly positioned in the top who the most consumed vegetables and fruits, following by men and children). Furthermore, the number of people eating these food items tended to increase significantly each year.

The graph illustrates the ratio of England people who consume more than five kinds of fruit and vegetables in a day in 8 years since 2001.

As a whole, it can be clearly seen that the ratio had steadily increased until 2006 regardless of their generations. This trend changed in 2006, and it began to lessen gradually, though it still remained relatively higher rate, compared to around 2000.

Seeing more details, it is explicit that the percentage of children eating several fruit and vegetables was about 12%, which is almost half as much as the ratio of women. Moreover, the gulf between the percentage of children and that of women had never been made up in 8 years, albeit it was shrinking.

As for the group of women, its rate of taking nourishment from fruit and vegetables was invariably higher than 20%, which is about the average rate of the group of men in 8 years.

    Hello,
I have question regarding these phrases, “almost 35%”,”about 17% and 12%” and “about 26%”.
In the video of vocabulary for accurate data, it was mentioned that if number which is not given is used directly can be counted as mistake. So if I use those numbers like the phrases using almost, about etc., it would counted as right answer I presume?

    Please guide me here.

    • You use words such as “about” when the number is not precise. If the number is precise, you don’t need to use such words.

Overall, women were the highest consumers as compared to men and children. we see a steady rise from year 2001 to 2006. On the other hand, men show a stagnant growth from 2001 to 2003 followed by a steady incline up to 2006. There was a continuous incline in consumption by children.
Men and children both showed a stagnation at between 10-15% and 15-20% respectively from 2001 to 2003. However, it was a different case for women where we see a steady rise in consumption from slightly above 20% in 2001 to above 25% in 2003. Thereafter children, men and women all show a rise in consumption of fruits from 2003 and reaching a peak in 2006.
From 2006 the proportion of women showed a downfall from over 35% to about 30% in 2008, on the other hand, children showed an increase from less than 25% in 2006 to slightly above 25% the following year and just a slight decline to less than 25% in 2008.

When we look at these graphs, we can easily see that women like eating fruit and vegetables during the day. But men do not like eating fruit and vegetables as much as women. And also children do not eat vegetables and fruits as much as women and men. There was a huge gap between men and women in 2003 and 2004. In those years men probably could not eat healthily. But the following year the big gap became smaller compared to other years. From 2004 to 2008 women probably thought that they should feed their children more healthily. We can see this on the graph because the percentage of children is rising from 2004 to 2008. And also we can see that 2006 was a really good year for men and women. And for children, 2007 was a really good year. Because percentages are high during these years. Also, we can easily see that during the 2003-2006 percentages are increasing linearly. But during the 2006-2008 percentages are decreasing linearly except men.

Overall, the highest proportion of those who consumed the food items throughout the period of 8 years were women as compared to children which are the least. Furthermore, a significant increase in the proportion of men, women, and children who consumed the food items was observed over the given period.
Within the span of 6 years (2001 and 2006), a significant increase in the consumption of food items by women was observed from around 20% to 35%. Afterward, a decline was observed for the remaining two years (2006 to 2008) from around 40% to 30%.
Additionally, a constant proportion of children and men who consumed fruits and vegetables was observed for the first three years (2001 to 2003) at about 12% and 17% respectively. Afterward, a significant increase was noticed for the next four years (2004 to 2007) at around 12% to 25% and 22% to 27% with a slight decrease to around 23% and 25% in 2008 for both children and men, respectively.

    Hello Liz.
First of all I’m very glad for your efforts to make others beneficial and thank you so much .
everyone is using “illustrates” in introduction or in paraphrasing the given content in graph. Can we use “encapsulate” instead of ?

    • IELTS Writing Task 1 is a report. This means language is formulaic and suitable for report writing. The word “encapsulate” is less appropriate then “illustrates”. You do not need to change the word to get a high score. As I said, this is report writing and you will all use similar words – the question is … will you use them correctly and in the right context.

    Hi Liz,
Please guide my passage below and please rate it in bands.

The chart illustrates the proportion of three kind of people (men, women and children) consuming 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day in UK in 8 years from 2001 to 2008. The proportion of people is counted in percentage.
Overall, the women consumed highest portions than men and children in given time period. In contrast to that, the children consumed least portions compared to men and women. The proportion of all three kind of people is increasing in given time period.
In 2001, above 20% of women were consuming which gradually increasing above 30% in 2006. Like-wise in men and children, they were at above 15% and above 10% in first three year which increases to above 25% and just under 25% in year 2007. There is slightly difference in increasing percentage between all three kind of people.
In contrast to that, in year 2007, the proportion of women consuming decreases to just above 30% and in last year (2008) it gradually deceases to approximately 30%. Likewise in proportion of men, it gradually decreases to approximately 25% and the proportion of children decreases to under 25% in 2008.

The bar chart illustrates the amount of people who ate fruits and vegetables 5 times each day in the UK between 2001 and 2008. The figures were divided into 3 sections indicating different sex (women and men) or age (children). The data was given in percentages.
Overall, the percentages of consumption of 5 portions of fruits and vegetables increased in each section over the given period except the last two years of a slight decrease.
In terms of women’s consumption, it started at the rate of slightly over 20% in 2001 and went up to its peak equal to above 30% in 2006. Then it fell to 30% in the final year of 2008. Nevertheless, the figures concerning females’ food portions remain the highest in the chart.
The number of portions ate by Males’ and Children’s remianed steady in the first two years at marginally above 20% and over 10% respetively. Then a gradual growth occured, lifting both scores to well above 20% for men and slightly under 20% for kids. Children’s consumption rose to over 25% in the year after. Both rates went down the last recorded year.

Hi liz plz check my writing and also tell me how much band can I get on this.

This chart illustrates the proportion of adults and children consuming fruits and vegetables per day in 8 years in UK from 2001 to 2008. The data is calibrated in percentage.

Overall, it can be seen that people who ate more fruits and vegetables in 8 years was women. Whereas, Children showed consistency and accounted for the lowest proportion in the chart. Furthermore, Men showed continuous increase in consumption.

To begin with, the percentage of women ate fruits and vegetables stood just above (20%) in 2001 then shown a gradual increase to almost (25%) in 2003 then it rose significantly to more than (30%) in 2005. Then, its proportion decreased steadily reaches to around (30%) in 2008.

In contrast to women, proportion of men consuming fruits and vegetables stood just above (10%) in 2001 and this rate remained stable till 2003. Then, it increased substantially to almost (25%) in 2007 and then it started to decline. Moreover, children shows the least percentage stood above (10%) in 2003 then increased gradually and reaches to almost (25%) in 2007 and decreased to almost (3%) in 2008.

  91. Hi Liz,

I attempted this graph but I am very confused with the paragraph that gives the overall view of this answer. According to me, there is an overall decrease in consumption of fruits not increased because all the values increased in the beginning but toward the end, they all showed a decline. Could you please help me by clarifying this?

    • You need to think more simply. Look at the numbers in the first year and then look at the numbers in the last year – did they go up or down? That is the meaning of “over the period given” – from start to finish. Everything that happens in the middle are details you provide in the body paragraph unless a particular key feature jumps out at you – then pop it into the overview as well.

      • Ritika says

You are right! I looked at the beginning and the end. All values decreased at the end( slightly) for children, men and women. But your model answer says overall increase.

        • The overview is about key features, not small details – not slight changes. For example, children started at about 10% and ended at about 25% – that is an increase. The increase is a significant overall feature for the overview. All other small (insignificant or slight changes) belongs in the body.

The bar chart illustrates the comparison of fruits and vegetables ate by the people of the UK(children, women, and men) according to their percentile versus the consecutive eight years from 2001
Overall, the food consumption of women was higher when compared with men and children but a steep rise is seen in the year 2006. Though there was a constant increase in the food consumption of women for first six years it slightly got decreased by the end of next two years but stills stand higher percentage than men and children who ate fruits and vegetables
Despite men who ate comparatively low then women but still follows the steady increase with a peak of nearly about 30% in 2006 while women stand slightly about 30%. The U.K recorded the highest point of consumption of fruits and vegetables by children in the year 2007 almost above 25%which makes eye to eye with the graph of women in the year 2008 but still kept fluctuating.

  93. NIKSTER says

The bar chart below illustrates the amount of the British population (sub-categorised into men, women, and children), measured in percentages, who consumed five servings of fruit and vegetables every day, from the years 2001 to 2008.
Overall, out of all the population, women had the highest percentage of those who ate five various fruits and vegetables daily, while children ate the least number of portions of these produces. The population all had a peak of consumption in the years 2006 and 2007.
When considering the population of men, in the years 2001 to 2003, approximately 12 percent of them had eaten the recommended portion of fruit and vegetables a day. This then exponentially grew to 28 percent by the year 2008, which then started a slow decline of 2% in the following two years.
In children, a similar pattern to that of men occurred. In the first three years recorded, the values stayed stable at 12 percent, which then had an incline of 14 percent. This also decreased by around 3 percent in the succeeding year.
In women, the data started at a percentage of 21, highest among all the subsections. Following a 5-year period of increased consumption fruit and veg, of a staggering increase off 15%, the data once again showed a dip in the percentage of people eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables daily of roughly 9 percent.

Hello Mam, I am following your videos and they are very much helpful to me.
I tried to solve this question and am representing it in front of you. Can you please analyze and suggest it to me?

The above bar chart represents the percentage of the population (viz. men, women and children) in the united kingdom within a span of 7 years from 2001 to 2008, who consumed each day 5 portions of fruits and vegetables.
Overall it is seen from the graph that the intake is highest in males as compared to the other two groups. Males and females reached their peak in the year 2006 (considerably above 30% and over 25% respectively), while children in the year 2007which is approx 25%.
There is a substantial increase in % of men from year 2001 with slightly above 20% reaching its peak to more than 30% in the year 2006 and then declining to exactly 30% in 2008. whilst, women and children have quite similar paths; their intake is steady from the year 2001 to 2003(over 15% and above 10% respectively).
the % of females continues to surge after 2003 till the year 2006 with an increase of approx 10% and declines to marginally above 25% in the year 2008. however, % of children continues to rise until the year 2007 with an increment of approx 15% but reduces again in 2008 to under 25%.

So far I have used to write the task 1 answer in the following order. I want to know whether it is correct or wrong.
    1) Paraphrasing
    2) Overview
    3) Similarities (By this I mean, I used to describe the similarities that can be found within the graph. For examples, similar increments, similar declinations, similar figures, etc)
    4) Dissimilarities (By this I often used to describe the differences in the information within the graph)

Plus, I want to know whether I can use the phrase “At a glance” to start the overview.

    From,
    Sri Lanka

    • An overview is best started with “Overall” – logical and appropriate. The words “At a glance” mean “a quick look” – your task is not a quick look, but deep analysis. Do not approach all Writing Task 1 in the same way. Learn to be flexible and learn about each one in turn.

  101. Hi, this is my essay.
The bar chart illustrates how many percentage of men, women and children in UK ate 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day between the years 2001 and 2008.
Overall, it can be seen that the amount of people who ate 5 servings of fruit and vegetables increased throughout the period and the biggest consumers were women, whereas the least of fruit and vegetables ate children each year.

The proportions of women started at 21% in year 2001, then reached the peak of over 35% in 2006 and year after registered slight decrease which continued to the year 2008.
According to the graph, men started to eat healthier in year 2004. Then increased by almost double in year 2006, when the percentage of men was close to 30% and after slowly slumped to the year 2008.

The least amount of the people who consumed fruit and vegetables were children in general. On the other hand, the percentage gradually climbed up from 13% to more than 27% in 2007. However, compared to the year 2007, in 2008 there were less children who ate 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

  102. Biraj Man Shrestha says

    Answer:

The given bar chart depicts the proportion of men, women and children consuming five servings f fruits and vegetables each day in 8 years which is from the year 2001 to the year 2008 within the UK.

Overall, we can see much rate of women to consume fruits and vegetables amongst, while the children’s rate seems relatively low. But as the year passes, we can point out the consumption rate of fruits and vegetables seems increasing of all the people.

Women’s consumption of fruits and vegetables are proportioned to be the highest among all throughout the years. It was at almost 21% in the first year and reached to 40% being the highest consumer by increasing consistently from the first year to the year 2006. Furthermore, there is a slight decrement in the proportion of their consuming capacity reaching nearly to 30% in the very next year.

While, talking about the proportion of men and children to consume fruits and vegetables, it remains quite at the similar rate of 12% and 16% respectively throughout the first three years. Whereas, their consuming rate peaked to above 25% up to the year 2007 but decreases slightly from that year and counted below 25%.

  103. Hello Liz, can we substitute the word overall with other synonyms? Please share some of them if it is possible. Thank you!

    • The word “overall” is the most appropriate linking word to highlight an overview. It helps the examiner locate the overview easily. Remember, this is a report – it is not about being creative. Linking words are used to signpost – they are functional words. As you only ever need to use the word “overall” once, it doesn’t need to be paraphrased.

  104. Ajoku Chukwudi O. says

    My answer…

The chart illustrates the percentage of men, women and children who consumed five portions of vegetables daily in the UK between 2001 and 2008.

In general, the women were the largest consumers of fruits and vegetables. This is followed by men, then the children. In terms of maximum percentages, the women experienced theirs in 2006, the men, 2006 and 2007 and the children, 2007. On the other hand, consumers ( men women and children) were fewest in 2001.

Over 10% of children ate five portions of fruits and vegetables between 2001 and 2003 in the UK. From 2003 to 2007, the percentage of the children kept increasing until it got to about 25%. This percentage declined the next year.

In 2001 and 2002, the percentage of the women remained stagnant, having over 15% consumers. This increased a little the following year and continued increasing until 2006 where it became almost 30%. It maintained this level the preceding year and declined afterwards.

The women started at a little above 20% and increase steadily until it got to almost 35% in 2006. It experienced a decline in 2007 and 2008.

The bar chart illustrates the number of British people divided by 3 groups (men, women, and children) who ate 5 portions of fruit and vegetables daily from 2001 to 2008.

Overall, among the three groups on the list in that period, women group is the largest and reached the highest peak in 2006 before it began to drop a little bit in 2007. While women were reasonably increasing, men and children remained stable in the first 3 years (2001 to 2003) and climbed up in 2004 until 2007.

In 2001, women ate approximately 22% of fruit and vegetables followed by men and children. This figure then rose gradually year by year until 2006, the women got the highest peak which was around 35% but the number just dropped under 30% in 2007 and 2008.

Men and children on the other hands froze for the first 3 years which was about 12% of men and 17% respectively. Both groups were incremental from 2004 before they slightly fell down just under 25% of children and around 27% of men in 2008.

  118. Saiful Islam says

The bar diagram above gives information about the proportion of UK residents (men, women, and children) fruits and vegetable consumption each day over an eight years time period (from 2001 to 2008).
Overall, it can be seen that the general trend of food consumption is increasing over the time period where women consumed the highest percentage of fruits and vegetable than both the men and children in any time period.
In the case of women, the consumption of fruits and vegetable started from more than 20% in 2001 which increased steadily over time and reached a peak value of about 35% in 2006 and then decreased slightly.
Meanwhile, the men and children ate the fruits and vegetable in a steady manner during the first three years (about 12% and 17% respectively). From this point, the proportion of men increased gradually and reached a peak of 28% (2006 and 2007) and then dropped to 26% in the final year. A similar growth pattern of children proportion was evident in the chart and the highest percentage of about 26% was obtained in 2007 that decreased in the final year (about 23%) of the time period.

  119. The column chart demonstrates the information about the total proportion of people who ate fruits and vegetables each day in the united kindom from the period of 2001 till 2008. The data was given in percentage .

It is apparently seen in the data , from 2001 to 2006 , the highest food was consumed by women .that is above 30 % . In spite of this, men expenditure was similar to around 15 % throughout the first four year period . While next two year the consumption of men amplified roughly one quarter .the least percentage was come in children to food consumption .just around 23% during the time period.

In term of 2007 to 2008, the proportion of men and children constipation for food was exclusively 2 % different and women had 32% and 33% in last two year .

Overall ,it can be seen that , the highest proportion of women was stable in all year while , least number was children but in the ending year the consumption of food had inclined little bit. furthermore, according to overall period consumption of food had intensified by people .

    • If the dates are in the past, all description (except for the introduction – the graph shows…) will be past tense. This is not about IELTS rules, it is about appropriate use of English grammar. Always follow normal English grammar rules.

        3) overview or conclusion.
Will I score Good if task 1 is written this way?
I have tried giving overview after introduction but it feels incomplete to me if their nothing at the end. And having both overview and conclusion is not a good idea.

        • It would have no impact on your score at all whether your overview is after the introduction or at the end. This is not an essay, it is a report. You need to focus on more than just paragraph order if you want a higher score.

  122. Hello Lisa,
Thank you for your help and support. I have started watching your videos recently. And am finding it very helpful. I have my exam in the next week. Could you please guide me on the below essay.

The bar graph illustrates the rate at which the inhabitants (men, women and children) consume five portions of fruits and vegetables each day in the UK from the period 2001 till 2008.

Overall, the pattern has always remained same every year in which women have been the highest, second is the men and children being the least in consumption. The year 2006 have shown the highest consumption in men and women while children show their best in the following year (2007).

The percentage of consumption from the years 2001 till 2006 shows the significant difference on food consumption. The highest difference is seen in 2004 for which women is almost 30% while men and children are seen to be about 22% and 17% respectively.

The years 2006 to 2008 show differences but are minimal as compared to the years before 2006. The least difference is seen in the year 2007 with almost 2%. Hence the trend seems to minimize the difference by gradually increasing the consumption rate in all categories and significantly decreasing the difference of rates as well after the year 2006.

Liz, thank you for the sample report. Even though you used “these items” once, you still wrote four times “fruits and vegetables”, is it fine to repeat that much? Is it possible to use “healthy foods” instead to avoid repeating these words? My greatest of this report was to find substitute words for “fruits and vegetables”. I appreciate your attention.

    • The bar chart is about people eating fruit and vegetables. You can’t alter that. It is not about eating miso soup which is a healthy food. It is not about eating bread, or eating minerals or eating vitamins. It is about eating fruit and vegetables. Of course, those words will be repeated.

Hey Liz, thanks for all your lessons.

One question regarding the sample essay: Is it okay to write what might come off as an educated estimate? For example, consider numbers 12% and 17% as the consumption details of men and children. Is it alright or should we just say “a little over 10%” for 12% and so on? By doing this, we only would have used the numbers labelled in the graph(the 10% mark on y-axis). Your thoughts?

    • You can describe the number or percentage as you showed. 12% = a little over 10%. But then you must give the actual figure in brackets = a little over 10% (12%). This means for that example is would be a waste of time doing it. But if the percentage was 26%, you could write “just over a quarter (26%)”.

      • Hi Liz
In one of your videos you said that do not give actual numbers because you are not sure so just write little over 10% but here you are contradicting your statement. please help

        • You need to pay more attention to what I say. That video was about numbers that are not clearly given in the chart. If the data is clear and the figure is precisely 150,000 – of course you give it. The words “about” or “a little over” are for numbers that are not precise – that is the meaning of the words.

If we have not given the estimation in brackets but just written- ‘ just over 10 percent’ or ‘under 25 percent’ , will examiner deduce our marks for that?

        • It would affect your score for Task Achievement and your ability to support statements with accurate data. This is not a descriptive report – it is a factual report. Task 1 is report, not an essay.

          • Ma, I think what we’re trying to say is that, 12% or 26% are not marked in the bar chart, but 10% and 25% are clearly marked. So, how do we know when to use 12% and not 13%, or 26% and not 28%?

            • If it looks as though it is 12%, but you cannot be 100% sure, you must use “just over 10%”. That is the reason for the use of approximate words. It is also possible to write “about 12%” – again, you saying approximately which warns the reader it is not an exact number.

    hi liz
do we need to leave a line while starting from a fresh paragrah?

    • There is no fixed rule. However, if the examiners can’t easily see your paragraphs, you will get a lower score. So, leaving an empty line is a good strategy.

      • Chidera says

is it okay to leave few spaces on a line before starting a sentence as a paragraph rather than leaving the whole line?

  162. First,I’d like to thank you for your a great work. It’s really useful…
