    Hi Liz,

I just got my score and my writing is totally bombed.
In fairness, it was my first attempt, but I did not expect such a low mark.
I need to get at least 7 on writing to immigrate to Canada and I feel like my world is collapsing. Do you have any recommendations?

    R – 9
    L – 7.5
    W – 6
    S – 8

    Thanks,
    Jason

    Dear Liz,
I would like to thank you for such a great blog. I am working as a software developer. I want to express that your guidance has been extremely helpful for me while preparing for the IELTS GT. I can’t thank you enough for this as I didn’t take any other external help, apart from practising some official IELTS papers. My cousin had suggested me your website and I have seriously followed all your advices and videos. You have covered all the areas really well and truly I appreciate all your efforts and patience behind this. I had taken IELTS GT in April in which my overall score was 7.5 ( L: 7.5 R: 8.5 W: 7.5 S: 7.0). I was not satisfied with my listening score so I retook it in June and I am glad to inform you that I improved upon it. I got my result just today and my overall score is 8.0 ( L: 8.5 R:8.0 W:7.0 S:7.5) . During this time, I re-watched all your videos, and did more practise papers and listening exercises. Thanking you was the first thing I wanted to do on getting my aimed score. I will definitely suggest your blog to others. You have done an amazing work and it’s very nice of you to make it freely available. I really want to wish you all the best things. God bless you!! Thanks, Namaste

    • I was really pleased to see your results and read your comments. Very well done increasing your score ๐Ÿ™‚

    Dear Liz,

I am stuck with writing module. I never thought I would be stuck with English as I am quite fluent in it. I do make mistakes with grammar and spelling when it comes to writing, but after 4 attempts, I don’t know what to do. Certainly, the only hope now is to study writing like it is an academic test in University.

I really wish the writing was on a computer rather than the stone-aged pen and paper method.

    • Only about 50% of your marks in writing is based on the level of your English. The rest is technique. Although this is called the Academic IELTS test, your essay is not a university essay. This is an essay for IELTS. This means there are particular requirements which you MUST meet and that the examiner is looking for. Unless you train in IELTS essay writing, you won’t get the score you need. I highly recommend you get my Advanced Lessons for writing task 2. It takes me 1 hour to teach just one type of essay – there is a lot to learn: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

  4. Omidiji Moyin says

    Good morning Liz,
Thanks for your website. I had been stuck at 6.5 in writing (Academic module) in my previous attempts until i went through your advanced writing lessons and my writing score leaped from 6.5 to 8.0 !
    I am so excited.
I had an overall band of 8.0 (Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 8.0, and Speaking 8.0). THANK YOU.

    • That’s brilliant!! Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Writing scores are based on both the level of your English and your technique. Techniques can be quickly changed and learned, so if that is the problem, your score can certainly increase. Going from 6.5 to 8 is excellent – you should be proud of that achievement ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,
You certainly are doing a wonderful job. Not many people are blessed with a talent that can be shared globally.
During my first attempt on 12.05.18 , I scored
    L 8.5
    R 8.5
    S 7.0
And unfortunately 6.0 in writing, which could probably be attributed to certain unexpected distractions, for instance repeated erasing.
Iโ€™m awaiting my second attempt. Do you recommend a remarking in this context?

    • You can read my comments on others on this page about remarking for writing. If you are erasing often, it usually means you did not plan sufficiently. You don’t only plan main points, you also plan supporting ideas – in essence, each sentence is already formed in your mind before you start writing. This means when you actually write the essay, your ideas are fully formed, and you can focus on your grammar and vocab. Think about getting my Advanced Writing Task 2 Lessons to help you if you have to retake the test: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

  7. Rohit Handa says

    Hello Liz,

    First of all, I would like to thank you for sharing your expert advice with students like me who are planning to give IELTS exam. It is really a great help. I appeared for my IELTS exam on 02.06.2018 General Training (IDP) from Chandigarh (India). I am working as an Assistant Professor. The details of my score are as under;

    Listening – 9
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 8

    Overall – 8.5

I followed your advice and read all the topics of Task-2 (Writing Section) and framed key points for almost all before I went for my exam. It was a great help.

Regarding the exam, I missed 2 to 3 questions in listening but managed with the little I was able to recall at the end of the exam. Reading was fun as I am into academics and can read long passages which was not an issue. Speaking I was nervous because I was asked so many questions in Section-1 and 3 and I felt as the examiner was not convinced with my answers bit I cleared it.

So ultimately what I feel is that without your support, we all would have not achieved what we have achieved.
    Thanks Again!!!!

    • It’s a great score – very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ You are spot on about the listening – it is possible to use logical deduction to decide answers for missed questions when you are transferring your answers to the answer sheet. In the speaking test, if the examiner is asking a lot of questions, it’s a good thing. Glad my lessons were useful to you ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Sanjeev says

    Hi Liz,
Your website has been of great help. I gave the test on June 2nd and received my results today. I am very disappointed with my speaking score as I needed 7 in that. Not sure if I should go for the remark as I did the cardinal mistake of not using the whole time for the main topic. I stopped around the 45-second mark which might have caused a penalty. The examiner asked me to talk more, so I did use the whole time though. I did pretty well in other areas.
    Overall – 8
    L – 9
    R – 9
    W – 8
    S – 6.5
I will have to retake the exam now ๐Ÿ™

    Thanks
    Sanjeev

    • Spending 2 mins on your part 2 talk is not critical and does not guarantee a low score. It is a lost opportunity to take your language into your own hands and plan which language features you want to demonstrate to the examiner. If you felt you delivered a range of language features, strong fluency, a good range of grammar etc, then it is worth to consider a remark. I have also emailed you – so please check your email. Very well done with your other scores ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz

I would like to start by thanking you and your website/videos for helping me prepare for my IELTS test. I have been working as a System Analyst for the past six years. Today, I got my result for the general module IELTS test that I appeared on the 2nd of June 2018. Absolutely delighted to share my results with you.

    Overall – 8
    Listening – 8
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 7.5

This was my first attempt and I achieved my desired score in the first attempt. I was always good at Listening and Reading sections but average on Writing and Speaking sections. For writing I would recommend practice as much as you can. The more practice you do the more you learn from your mistakes and the better you get at writing. For speaking I would recommend just be natural. It is important to showcase your vocabulary, but on the other hand it is more important to be natural and speak confidently. It’s just like having a conversation with your colleague, friend, relative, etc.

Thanks a lot for the amazing and helpful posts. Appreciate all your help. Keep up the good work Liz!!!!

    • I’m pleased to see your score – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ your speaking tips are spot on – being natural, chatty and enjoying the conversation is very important ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello Liz,

I’d like to personally thank you for what you are doing here. Your resources have been so useful. I got my result today and I shed tears because it’s my 7th attempt and I finally got my desired scores. I always fall short of .5 in either listening or writing.

My profession is Banking and I took the GT module.

    My scores are below:
    Listening 8
    Writing 7
    Speaking 8.5
    Reading 9
    Overall 8

I followed your tips diligently, especially the part of making sure you write a good conclusion in writing. This time around I focused on your resources as against previous attempts that I got confused because I was reading other websites that had conflicting ideas.

Thank you again Liz,may God bless you.

I don’t mind sharing my tips as soon as I get my TRF.Cheers.

    Hi Liz,

I had my exam on June 2nd at Columbus, Ohio, USA, and I got the following scores:
    Listening: 8.5
    Writing: 7.5
    Speaking: 7
    Reading: 6.5
There were a lot of headings questions in the reading exam (which is the hardest for me) and that’s probably the reason I could not score 7 in the readings section. But I must say that getting 7.5 in Writing section was just because of your videos, lessons, and sample answers. I wrote exactly the way you provided the essays and I even wrote more than 300 words. The sad part is that I was not expecting less score in reading section due to which I have to write this exam again. I hope I do even better in that one!

    Thank you so much!

    • Well done with your results! Although not quite what you wanted, your reading will hopefully improve on your next test. Take your time to prepare ๐Ÿ™‚

    Listening – 7.5
    Reading – 7.5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7.5
    Overall – 7.5
    CLB Band – 8

I have to say a big thanks to you and wish you a good health and great life ahead!!
Without your tips and videos, i would have not done this. This may not be a good score for others, but as a dependent applicant for immigration this is more than enough for me!!
Thanks again, keep smiling as always!!!

    • Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ It is a good score! Not many people hit band 7 in writing with 8 overall ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Daniel says

    Hi Liz,

All I can say is thank you. I used only your blog to prepare. I registered for the test one month earlier. I’m a PhD student in E/E engineering, and I had little time on my hands. Before I knew it, it was 2 days to the test. So I shutdown every other thing and prepared using your blog. Here’s my result:
    Listening 8.5
    Reading 8.0
    Writing 8.5
    Speaking 7.5
    Overall Band: 8.0

for the writing part, I used your advanced writing lessons and nothing else. I got a Discussion essay asking to discuss views about the impacts which family migration have on the development and life of the children, and was asked to state my opinion. I simply used the format in your Discussion essay video (advanced writing task 2) and that did it.

Thank you. I will probably mail you my report form when I receive it.

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m so glad my advanced writing task 2 lessons were useful ๐Ÿ™‚ With such little prep time – it’s a great score ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Akshar Mehta says

    Hi!

Phew! The results are here! While they are decent, I really hoped for a better score in writing. Overall score 8.5

    Reading: 9
    Listening: 9
    Speaking: 8.5
    Writing: 7.5

I think I allocated lesser time to practice writing as compared to the others and that could be the reason for the lower score. However, I would like to thank you for all the resources you have made available on your website. Your advanced series was a life saver ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Writing does require a lot of preparation – mainly in terms of developing ideas for topics, practising identifying and addressing issues, and planning organisation. Still, getting band 7.5 in writing is a strong score ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Ame Uwoghiren says

    Hi Liz,
First off I’d like to say a big thank you, your site helped a whole lot with my practice.

I took the IELTS General test on the 24th of May 2018.

    I had 8.5 overall.
    Listening – 9.0
    Reading – 9.0
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 7.5

This was my second attempt though, as my first try was in September 2017 (had 7.5 overall then).
Generally, I’d say practicing over and over for every aspect of the test is very important. The fact is no matter how much of an everyday English language user you are, being under exam conditions gives some sort of tension that could throw you off balance.

Listening: I used the practice materials on IELTS Liz and a few free practice materials I came across online. The key here is not to listen too “hard” and also not to get distracted while listening. Ensure that you read the HEADINGS and questions and also understand what is required of you (one word, a number, not more than three words etc.). If you miss a question, don’t stop listening! You can go over the tape in your head when you are given time to check your answers.

Reading: Again the IELTS Liz site was my forte. I went over every single tip not less than 5 times, and I made sure to apply them when practicing questions. In the beginning, I had a serious problem with the True/False/Not given aspect, but with consistent practice, I was able to get the hang of it.

Writing: “The arch nemesis”. So, the writing test was a nightmare for me in my first IELTS exams, so I had to put in a lot of focus on this aspect; the writing task 2 especially. I followed every single tip on this site, watched every video and I practiced as much as I could. On the test day i made sure to manage my time very well, in the first two minutes, i put down points for both the task one and two, I spent about 15 – 18 minutes on task one and the rest of the time on task 2. Unfortunately, I had just about a minute to read through both the task one and two before the end of the test.

Speaking: I went through most of the recent questions for May – August on the site, but unfortunately, I got a question I wasn’t remotely prepared for in the second part of the test “my favourite season”. Although I couldn’t talk about it for too long (spoke for only about a minute) i made sure I answered the follow up questions in the section three to the best of my abilities. I kept in mind that the examiner wasn’t examining my knowledge of the topic, and this helped out a lot.

All in all I’d say practicing as much as you can will help you achieve your desired score. Thanks a million Liz.

    • Going from 7.5 to 8.5 overall is excellent – very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips – you’ve got some great tips that will really help people with their IELTS test ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Fadeyinmi says

    Hi Liz,
My IELTS GT was on 24/05/2018, my first attempt.
I am a stay home mum.

    My Scores goes thus:
    Listening 9.0
    Reading 8.5
    Writing 7.0
    Speaking 8.0
    Overall 8.0

For listening, I tried to concentrate only on the moment. Whatever I missed, i only filled in after I had finished the entire test.

For reading, I read through the questions before reading through the passages. And this made things very much faster for me. Though this method didn’t really work effectively for the last part of the reading test.

For my writing test, though I have always been a good writer, my writing is always rough. Using a pencil meant I was distracted with making corrections with the Eraser. I was so distracted , I started my second writing 20mins to the end of the test.
My Second writing was an opinion test and instead of choosing sides (negative impact of hosting international sporting events on the host country) , I weighed both sides by listing the advantages and disadvantages and made sure I had a conclusion as you instructed.
If I had not been so distracted with the first question, I believe I might have done better.

For speaking, I ensured I gave long engaging answers to almost every question. The second part of the test had to do with saving money and what I did with it. I almost lost track of the questions as I told my story about saving up for a lunch date for my husband and daughter. During the third part (money, budget, youth attitude to spending, general attitude to spending) , I didn’t even know what to say to the examiner at some point , so I told her to repeat the question as an opportunity to think. I eventually gave a certain flimsy answer.
On a whole, i didn’t think I did any good till I saw my scores.

Thank you for what you do here. I studied the blog all night before my tests and I got more value than I had gotten since I started studying through other media.

    • A great score – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips as well – very useful ๐Ÿ™‚ I have quite a few stay at home Mum’s contacting me about studying IELTS. Dear Ms. Liz,

Thank you for your such generous efforts to assist and guide aspiring young people to reach their target score in the form of your website. It takes enormous time and humongous effort to run this initiative and I congratulate you for that. You website is indeed a blessing and I am really proud that I have scored the required bands solely depending on your learning material provided here, though I retook the exam seven times (always got 6.5 in writing). But all is well that ends well. My scores are:
    L= 8.5
    R= 8
    S = 7
    W= 7

I have also taken the exam on 2nd June and I hope to get deserved scores in that too.
I am not working at the moment as I have recently shifted from Australia. I studied there and worked part time as an Assistant Store Manager.

    • Very well done finally hitting your band 7 in writing – great ๐Ÿ™‚ So glad my website was useful ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Mohita Kaushik says

    Hi Liz,

Firstly, thank you so much for your blog, you are doing a commendable job, and your channel has been a great help to IELTS aspirants. I prepared for less than a month and found your blog very resourceful.

I gave exam on 24th May, and my got results yesterday –
    Overall – 8
    Listening – 9
    Reading – 7.5
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 7.5

A few tips which I guess worked for me –

    1) For speaking, be clear and confident. There is no need to worry about correctness of the answer, just speak from your heart. Don’t consider this as an interview, but consider it as if you are sharing your life experiences with a friend. Prepare certain notes, or practice on certain topics (given on this blog) about the ideas which you can speak upon.

    2) For writing, prepare a structured format for yourself for each type of essay (I prepared using Liz Model essays), and practice using that. It helped me in maintaining the flow of my essay as well in Task Achievement and Cohesion. Avoid using too low vocabulary and using same word again and again, instead use synonyms.

    3) For Listening and Reading, analyze your practice tests and focus on areas where you are getting most incorrect answers, and try answering those using a different strategy.

    4) Most importantly, be calm and stay positive and cheerful on the test day ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips. Don’t forget to mention your profession.

  25. Maitri Paul says

Hey, this is Maitri Paul. I am from India. I posted My Questions of IELTS before on 24th of MAY 2018 and today I got my Result. I got only 3 days time to prepare myself since my Graduation exams were going on and I was in a hurry. Anyway, I took The ACADEMIC IELTS Test and got an overall band of 7.5 which is C1 but my English depth is C2. But due to lack of practice, I could not perform that well and I am not that satisfied.

    So,
    Overall Band – 7.5
    Reading – 7
    Listening -8
    Speaking – 7.5
    Writing – 6.5

Well, since I did not get to practice much. All I did was go through your videos for 3 days mainly about Writing and Speaking.

My Speaking is very fluent but the topics were very uncommon so could not give my best.
TIP-1 Vocabs are very important even if you get very uncommon topics.

Listening needs practice but I watch many TV series in Netflix so I did not face many problems.
TIP-2 Listening really needs practice if someone is not comfortable with the Accents which Indians face a lot.

Reading. Well, I took your tips in reading and skim read it. But in spite of having 30 minutes for the last paragraph, I did not get much time for T/F/NG.
TIP-3 Please practice Reading and try to finish it on Time.

Writing. Well. I do not know why my score went down because according to me, it was okay and deserved a Band 7.
TIP-4 Here also I suggest to practice and increase Vocabularies.

And THANK YOU SO MUCH, for all the tips and suggestions. It really helped a lot. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • For a first attempt with only 3 days to prepare, it’s a great score. With your results, it would be possible to consider a remark in writing, but only if you are sure you wrote over the word count in both tasks, with an overview in task 1 and a conclusion in task 2. Thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,
I am general English teacher from Azerbaijan and just got my results.
    Overall-8
    Listening 8.5
    Reading 8.5
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 7.5

Unfortunately, writing is disappointment for me as I expected at least 7. Do you think, I should request a re-mark?
In addition, your website and tips was so useful during preparation. Keep up the good work! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • If you wrote over the word count in both tasks, with an overview in task 1 and a conclusion in task 2, it might be possible to consider a remark. But it’s never guaranteed. Your speaking results show you have a good level of English, because the marking criteria are only language based in speaking. Unfortunately, writing has different requirements which are specific to IELTS. Only around 50% of your marks are language based in writing – for this reason many people get a lower score in this section because they have not fully understood what is required of them in their essay. I do sell advanced writing task 2 lessons for this reason: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/ Glad my website was useful ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello Liz
My name is Ayodele and i am a Chemical Engineer in Nigeria.
I had my General Test on the 24th of May 2018. My first attempt.

    OVERALL BAND : 8.0
    LISTENING: 9.0
    READING: 9.0
    WRITING: 7.0
    SPEAKING: 7.5

I just want to say a big thank you for the wonderful job you’re doing. Your website and videos played a key part in my test scores. Well done!!

I reckoned i could’ve done better in the writing test, as i made a major error in my writing task 2 where my essay was leaning more towards “Advantage/Disadvantage” type rather than “Agree/Disagree”. Nevertheless, i am proud of the score as i have always had a flair for writing.

For the Listening, it’s more of concentration and trying to stay as focused as possible. Also, that brief moment where you are given a few minutes to read the next questions before the tape plays is priceless as it afforded me the opportunity to sort of predict the answers.

As per the Reading test, i basically just read the questions of the passages first before attempting to skim/scan the passage. This worked perfectly well for me as my mind was trained to look out for specific words/phrases etc.

The Speaking test is all about confidence. The tips from your videos on how to answer questions by paraphrasing them was invaluable.

Overall, it’s about taking time to practice as much as you can.
Thank you once again and keep up the great job you’re doing. Cheers!!

    • Very well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ Hitting band 7 in writing isn’t easy – good job ๐Ÿ™‚ Great listening and reading scores! Thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚

Your website is the most helpful and your IELTS related material is accurate and up to date. Thank you for helping me understand the best way to confront the writing task 1. My tip for everyone would be : try to take as many tests as possible and always keep in mind the time , because it is crucial to comprehend that time is a key factor in this test. Don’t panic and try to concetrate. I was about to lose my cool twice during the actual test but I took a deep breath and carried on.

Again , thank you very much .
    Kisses from Greece.

  31. Hi Liz,
I am from Bangalore, India. I took IELTS (GT ) on 12th May and got overall band 8.0. This was my first attempt.
    L : 9
    R : 8.5
    W :7
    S :7
To be honest, I achieved this result with just 2 days of thorough preparation. I am a Semiconductor Professional working in a startup and my work intensity did not give me the luxury to prepare everyday. I neither did a speaking mock test nor wrote whole practice essays, the results of which reflects in my low scores(a little disappointed) in those two sections.

First and foremost, a big thank you for you for the tips and techniques you have posted in this site. The last couple of days before exam , I took off from work and I just referred your website for all the tips and strategies. It helped me immensely, especially in approaching multiple choice questions in Listening(May 12th test had plenty of MC questions – 2 sections to be precise) and T/Y,F/N, NG questions in Reading.I also used your website to get the crux and the skeleton for writing tasks.Your videos are short and to the point which is really helpful for last moment planners like me.Again thanks a ton.

Coming to the tips, I think you have covered all of them in your website.I will just add a few from my IELTS experience.

Listening – Start listening to English Podcast whenever possible.I spend close to 2 hours every day in transit and I switched to listening to podcasts from songs after registering to IELTS. There are plenty of good channels to improve your listening and overall English. My personal favorites are – The Inquiry from BBC, Intelligence squared US debate and Open Source. These podcasts talk about the current issues in the World and will help you not only in listening but also in speaking part 3 and writing task part 2 for the ideas and vocabulary.
Reading-If you read newspaper or articles everyday at least for half an hour, then this should be a piece of cake. Time Management is the Key. Ensure at least 30 mins for the last section which requires in depth reading and have at least 5 mins buffer at the end to review once. (underline the answer in the booklet,to review quickly )
Speaking – I literally didn’t prepare and paid the price for it. I personally feel this is the easiest section of all if prepared well. I was nervous in the first part due to lack of confidence and although I maintained fluency throughout the test and discussed good ideas (part 3), I was skeptical to use less common vocabulary and stuck with simple daily English to be on the safer side(Big mistake I felt) .Best thing to do would be to have a friend or a speaking partner and do few mock sessions.
Writing- Key is Time management which comes only with practice. I spent more than 30 mins on task 1 and another 10 mins planning the essay which left me with very little time to complete the writing and no time to review , correct the grammatical errors and to re-structure the sentence. So practice as much as possible if time permits.Worst case scenario , write at least one full practice essay for each category before the main test by following all the tips highlighted by Liz which will definitely help in scoring 7+ band.

My best wishes to all the test takers. There is nothing to panic. If your education from kinder garden was in English and if you could afford a couple of hours per day for a month to prepare(mostly writing ), then just go through Liz website which is all that you need to score a band 8 or higher.

    • Very well done, Raj! It’s a great score to be proud of. Thanks for sharing your tips and experience – I know many IELTS aspirants will benefit from them. You’ve highlighted many key points – particularly time management ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Amaninder Singh says

      Congratulations for your result.
Kindly let me know did you take the test from IDP or BCD?

    • Sonia says

      Hello Raj
Very well done and it is an awesome score. I have given twice but not able to get where i am doing wrong. My weakness is multiple choice questions in a listing. Do you have any better strategy to overcome on those?

      • Hi Sonia,

Let me tell you how I approached MC questions and see if this can be of any help to you.
Firstly, as soon as the instructor allowed everyone to open the question booklet, I straightaway looked for MC questions and underlined the key word and paraphrased them if possible. I also used the initial time when the recording is played with a demo instruction to analyze all MC questions upfront.

Next, I did not read the MC answers in detail when the recording was playing , I was just scanning them and fully concentrating on listening since the answers may come in different order(and was eliminating the wrong choices based on whatever I was listening to). In my point of view, we generally tend to lose track of the listening if we dive deep into reading the answers and waiting for the same to be heard in the recording.

Just try if this method works for you by doing a few practice tests.I would be glad if this technique helped you.

So in a nutshell ,the key is Understanding and preparing the questions upfront and to Focus completely.

All the best for you main day. Cheers.

  32. Deepa Thomas-Sutcliffe says

Thank you so much for the great advice. I basically spent the two weeks of prep I had mainly on your site and also on the Road to IELTS practise tests and tips you get once your application is accepted by the British Council.

I was delighted by the overall band score of 8 I received as I needed 7.5 for teaching jobs in Saudi Arabia. My individual scores are: Listening – 9, Reading -8.5, Writing – 7 and Speaking 8.0. I wish I had got a better score on writing and perhaps needed to practise the two essays more.

    My tips would be to:
    1. Prep: Practise the full test as many times as possible in your prep
    2. Prep: Watch the advice videos to learn about tips & tricks for eg. how the reading IELTS may say 15 rather than 50 to confuse you and then later it would be corrected to 50
    3. Exam: Keep a little time at the end of Listening & Reading to revise your work and spot any errors. I finished both those sections well ahead of time.
    4. Exam: Time your Writing Test well and spend more time on Section 2 than Section 1. Ensure you have the Introduction, Body of at least 3 paragraphs & Conclusion written before you run out of time. Go above the word count.
    5. Exam: However boring or strange be the topic in the Speaking Exam, talk until the examiner stops you and leverage your vocabulary to show your command of the language.

Hope these tips help. Liz thank you again for all your amazing content.

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. Anna says

    Hi Liz,

I canโ€™t thank you enough for the help you have given me to prepare for the IELTS exam. Your website was the only source of information I used, I just couldnโ€™t trust anyone else. My exam was in London on 19 May 2018 (the Royal Wedding!!) and I was so sure I had failed, I actually booked a repeat test date as soon as my exam was over. I knew I hadnโ€™t done my best on the writing task and this worried – in brief, by the time I got to the writing module in the exam, I was so tired, I completely lacked concentration, had to take a toilet break (which wasted my time)… I misunderstood the question, then realised my mistake, ended up erasing a page of writing and started again with 15 minutes to go… I really was convinced I had failed.

Anyway, my results have just been published and I am in disbelief…

    Listening: 8.0
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 7.0
    Speaking: 9
    Overall band score: 8

Clearly, my writing wasnโ€™t up to scratch (as I expected) but I am so grateful I got the minimum score required by my university.

Thank you once again, I couldnโ€™t have done this without you!!

    Kind regards,
    Anna

    • Very well done, Anna ๐Ÿ™‚ Getting band 7 in writing with only 15 mins to re-write is amazing!

  37. Pearl says

    Hi Liz,

I really want to use this medium to say thank you, this blog is definately beneficial for students preparing for the IELTS. May 12 was my third attempt on the IELTS in my last 2 attempts I was down by .5 which was quite depressing. I was referred to your blog and my score reads thus:
    Reading – 9
    Speaking – 8.5
    Listening – 8.5
    Writing – 8.5

I wanted to post my result but I havenโ€™t gotten around to doing so. But my greatest tip is basically using the tips I read of Lizโ€™s blog especially for writing. For reading I had to stick to a method that works for me, I am a fast reader and I tend to assimilate the questions if I have an understanding of the passage so I tend to read the entire thing in one quick sweep and then attempt the questions. For speaking you need to be confident and relaxed just try and have a good and rich conversation. For listening it was practise, practise and practise that made me conversant with different tones and at different pitch. I really would say this blog made the difference for me in this attempt which has now proved successful. Wish you all the best

    Cheers
    Pearl

    • Pearl, it’s a great score! I’m so pleased you found my website ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your results ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Ankur Gupta says

    Hi Liz,

Thank you for all the help you have provided through your website. I recently appeared for IELTS General exam in SF, Cali center and got my results:
    Listening- 8
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 8
    Speaking- 8.5
    Overall – 8.5
Now brief about each section –

    1) Listening – Listening was tough because questions and choices were tricky, close and with lot of verbiage. I followed the method of reading questions in next section when they ask to check questions in previous section. I got map related questions as well. My advise, always stick to your first choice which you make while hearing. Also, listen completely with concentration even if you feel you got your answer.

    2) Reading – This is the breather. I was able to complete this section in 35 mins. Do revise!! I was able to rectify 2 questions while revising.

    3) Writing – Topic was ” Importance of Money and teaching the importance to children”. There were two questions on the topic – 1) Why it is important 2) How can parents teach the importance to their children. Time is limited. Always Write more and use vocab properly. I asked for supplementary sheet for my task 2. I was able to revise task 2 but not task 1. Plan your time properly and always revise. I practiced for writing a lot.

    4) Speaking – This was the best part of the test. It’s like introductory interview. I deliberately used 4-5 vocab words. Make sure to be confident. I remember leaving 1 sentence incomplete and starting again by changing it’s structure. I practiced for speaking with my friend. She used to give me cue-card problems and i used to speak following the same way as an exam and she used to time me. This helped me a lot. Yes, my topic was something around ” A time you changed your decision suddenly. What it was? When? Why did you change? ” Then she asked me multiple questions on top of this like “People usually don’t like changes, Why people change their decision, Is it good to change your decision often, Do you like hand written letters or emails? How often you write letters, Do you use maps, Do you ask people about navigations, etc”

I completed IELTS Cambridge Test Series books (7-12). I gave about 1 month for preparation.I followed IELTS Liz for all tips, tricks, advise, writing formats. I am very thankful to you for consolidating so much information on your website and your continued effort to make it even better. For all the candidates, here is one advise – Follow IELTS Liz with dedication. Don’t refer to multiple websites. Stick with 1-2 places for preparation only. Must do IELTS Cambridge book 11 and 12. Practice writing a lot, esp. by writing responses and getting it checked by an expert. Reading, practice T, F, NG ( i got about 10+ question of this pattern).

    Good Luck!!

    • A great score !! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips – I know many people will thank you for this. You’ve pointed out some essential aspects of taking the test as well as of preparation. Doing real IELTS tests at home is one of the most important things to do before your real test. Well done ๐Ÿ™‚

    W = 7

    Thank you Liz.
    I am a software engineer.
My entire preparation was done by following your website.
    General Training:
    Listening – 8
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7.5
    Overall band – 8

Doing all the exercises provided on your website for reading was very helpful.

Following the structure for writing Task 1 and Task 2 also helped me a lot. One big mistake I made in the exam was, I wrote task 1 answer in task 2 answer sheet, due to which I had to copy whole answer again to task 1 answer sheet, which had cost me 8 minutes. Otherwise, My writing score would have been much better.

For speaking, just try to make a conversation with the examiner.

For Listening, try to focus more. Remind yourself to focus when extra time is given to look at questions in advance. Do a lot of mock exams.

Thanks a lot for all the work that you put in to help others.

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Considering the problem you had in writing, you’ve scored very well ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Hi Liz,

A big thanks for your website and your free service which is indeed great. It helped me a lot for my GT test.
I took my test on 12th May and got an overall band of 7.5
    L-8.5 , R-8.5 , W-6.5 , S-7
I am disappointed with my writing and speaking because I was sure to get a band higher than this. And due to this I could not score any points for immigration. While speaking test I was so natural and was able to speak fluently except for 1 mistake which I think should not put me down to 7.
I did not take any professional correction service for writing while practicing. I made a mistake though which is in task 1. The letter is about providing tips for a friend on her first interview. Instead of mentioning first I wrote she should talk about her prior work experience. So I am little confused whether to go for a remarking or a second attempt. I am just short of 0.5 in writing due to which my score is insufficient for immigration.
Whatsoever, I am certainly grateful to you for your highly valuable lessons. Take a bow.

    • Well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ Remarking is never a guaranteed success. It’s up to you if you choose to try it.

    Hi Liz,
I want to use this opportunity to say a very big thank you for what you are doing here. I’m one of the beneficiaries of your kind gestures.

I wrote my IELTS ( Academic) on May 12,2018 at Ibadan, Nigeria. I got my scores few minutes ago. It was my first attempt and I say that I’m ok with all but writing.

    Overall: -7.5
    Listening:8.5
    Reading:7.5
    Speaking:7.5
    Writing:6.5

Your lessons were very helpful. I practiced mostly using your website. Infact, for the speaking,I started practising few days to the exams. For the writing, I guess I didn’t use enough vocabulary to describe the line graph given. That must have been responsible for the low score. I practiced listening more because I had issues listening for ‘s’ plurals, articles , and repeating information already given in the passage. Like writing the $ dollar sign when it’s already given in the passage.

May God in His infinite mercies meet you too at your every points of needs, amen.
    Thanks

    • Well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ Line graphs certainly require a range of vocabulary used appropriately – it’s still a good score ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,
    I took IELTS GT on 12 May,2018. I’ve got
    Band 8.5
    L-9
    R-9
    S-8
    W-7.5
Thank you Liz. Your site and tips helped me a lot. I’m a doctor. It was my 1st attempt. I took preparations for 2 months.
I just wanna say that it’s all about practice. I’m not a English medium student. In my country (Bangladesh) English is taught for 12 years in the public schools and colleges. But one doesn’t have to speak a single sentence in English. I still can’t believe how poor my speaking was. Actually I think my speaking has a lot of room to improve. Even now I can’t pronounce words like ‘film’.
    Tips –
    Reading- good time management
Listening- concentre very hard ( needs practice). It’s only 30 mins. Look for plurals and articles. Watch Liz’s videos.
Writing- my writing was sixish. But following some basic rules like writing a coherent intro, using linkers and clauses, minimizing spelling errors, improving hand writing ( remember, I’m a docta) and expanding vocabulary regarding commonly used words and thus avoiding repititions, I was able to lift my band score to 7.5
Speaking- practice, practice and more practice.
Try to enjoy your conversation with the examiner. I know it’s hard. But we had a real talk. Actually the examiner was able to convince me to change my opinion about the formal clothes worn by the people of my country.
Finally thank you Liz, thank you very much.

    • Well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips and experiences. When the speaking test feels like a conversation – it’s a good sign ๐Ÿ™‚

  48. Ekansh says

Hi there, I appeared for my IELTS for the first time in January and although my over all score was 8.0 with 8/ 8.5 in R/ S/ L, I had a 6.5 on my writing.

Now I am a fairly decent writer and I even occasionally write articles for some online platforms. The result was a surprise to me and my friends too.

I re took the IELTS in March and then got the following – 9 / 9 / 8 / 7 in LRSW with an overall band of 8.5. Firstly, this website was quite helpful to that. I decided to write this post to share my experience with you. Besides the content and the questions, the biggest points that I realized was

    1. Writing in IELTS is very technical. It is not as much about the content or the idea of your writing but about the technicality of your word usage and sentence construction. By this I mean that it is important to understand the proper use of linking words and how the commas and etc work with them.

    2. Make sure you practice your speaking or at least visualize yourself doing it. In the part where you’re asked to talk about a given topic – dont stop talking unless you are specifically asked to.

    3. Score well on your reading and listening – you can score a perfect score on them with some practice.

    Hi Liz,

I am working as a Software Engineer in one of the Network operators in Singapore.
I came to here to thank you for sharing all the tips, techniques and materials in your website. It was very useful and helped me to get the required band score.
I managed to get 7 and I am extremely happy because all I wanted was only 6.

    GT
    Overall : 7
    ===========
    Listening : 8
    Reading : 6.5
    Speaking : 7
    Writing : 7
    ===========

At first, I was bit shocked to see my reading score as it was unexpected. But, I guess it could be due to some minor mistakes.

Thanks a ton Liz. Your lessons not only improved my language but also boosted confidence while speaking. My job demands me to handle overseas customers where the main language of communication is English. I have had hard time understanding their words while on call and was not able to respond properly. Now, I feel more enthusiastic and confident , and always ready to attend any call or meeting.
Also, I have developed an interest and taste in reading. I spend most of my spare time in reading rather than wasting on social media scrolling unnecessary feeds/photos/snaps. You have changed the way I look at English language and improved my lifestyle.

Thank you so much Liz. You are doing a great job.

Suggestion to test takers : Just go through Liz website. It is more than enough as it has EVERYTHING needed.

    • To get band 7 when you only needed band 6 is excellent ๐Ÿ™‚ Well done ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m so glad my website lessons helped ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello Liz,
    Hope you are doing well!
I took IELTS Academic on 12th May 2018. Speaking was held on 9th May 2018. Speaking and Listening sections went very well. In my opinion, Reading was tough. Writing has always been difficult for me because I haven’t written a lot since school days. However, I learnt that it’s more about the pattern or structure that the examiner is interested in.
To be honest, I was sad with my performance in Reading and Writing sections. But when I got the result yesterday, I was surprised because I scored 8 bands overall.
Below is my result for IELTS Academic:-
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 7
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 8.5
A bit about me, I took IELTS General last year for immigration purpose and scored 7.5 bands overall with sectional bands as stated below:-
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 7
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 7.5
You can clearly see that I have improved my band score in Speaking and have maintained my band score in Listening and Reading. However, I scored .5 band less in Writing this time.
All in all, I am happy with my score in both test versions because I achieved more than what I needed in the first place.
Therefore, in my opinion, IELTS is more about strategical preparation and if candidates can follow that on the test day, they are more likely to score well.
    @Liz – I ain’t that bad in Writing, isn’t?

    • You’ve done really well. Hitting band 7 in writing is a particular level that many want to achieve – well done:)

  51. Thank you so much Liz. Iโ€™m a medical doctor and Iโ€™ve written the ielts academic test four times for registration as a doctor in the United Kingdom but I kept scoring 6.5 in writing. I wrote it for the fifth time on the 12th of May and below is the result

    Hi Liz,
Firstly, I’d like to thank you for all the practice tests, tips, essays and letter samples. They really helped.
I’d recommend anyone taking the test to read the tips posted on this website. I didn’t get much time to look at the videos but I made sure that I look at the sample answers to the writing tasks. Do practice writing as many topics as possible.
Also, do practice IELTS Cambridge practice tests.

    Practice is the key.

I took IELTS GT on 12th May and received my scores today.

    Overall: 8.5
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 8.5
    Speaking: 7.5

    Kind regards

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Definitely all IELTS candidates should do as many Cambridge IELTS tests as possible to prepare.

  58. Hello,
I was hoping to get band 7.0 in all four sections in order to apply for PR in Australia. I tried the test 3 times.

    Attempt 1 in April 2016 (Academic module) R 8.0/ L 8.0/ W 6.5/ S 6.5
    Attempt 2 in April 2018 (General Module) R 8.5/ L 8.5/ W 6.5/ S 8.0
    Attempt 3 in May 2018 (General module) R 8.5/ L 9.0/ W 7.0/ S 7.0

Finally I achieved my goal. Just a day before my last exam, I came across Liz’s website. I went through the different essay types she has described. This might have helped me to move from 6.5 to 7.0 in writing. For Reading and listening, I did the practice tests in IELTS Cambridge book 1-10.

Thank you Liz for your valuable website ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I’m so pleased you finally hit the score you needed – well done ๐Ÿ™‚

  59. Neha says

    Hi!! Liz.

I just received my IELTS results. It was my second attempt.
    L-8
    R-8
    W-6.5
    S-7.5.

    My previous results were:
    L-7.5
    R-7.5
    W-7
    S-7.5.

This time my writing went very good and I was expecting band score higher than 7.0.
I addressed all the parts of the questions. I also took help from your advance lessons too. Do you think I should opt for revaluation? I am very disappointed with my writing scores.

    • It’s certainly possible to consider a remark with your results. However, there’s no guarantee. If you wrote over the word count i both tasks, but also not more than 200 in task 1 or more than 300 in task 2 – then it’s worth considering. Also as long as you finished your task 2 with a conclusion and if your task 1 had a clear overview – then go for it and I wish you luck!

      • Neha says

Thank you so much Liz. I made sure to write above 150 words in task 1 and above 250 in Task 2. I ended up a conclusion in good way too. But I am not sure whether the task 1was above 200 & task 2 above 300.

Infact I wasnโ€™t aware that writing over limit will deduct my marks. Anyways, I am very thankful to you and hopefully get 7 in writing.
May god bless you always. You are doing such a noble work.

        • In writing task 1, you are marked on your ability to select information and group information together. Getting lost in too much detail will lower your score. In writing task 2, the essay must be highly focused and each sentence 100% relevant and critical to the essay. Writing over 300 words means you probably included some less relevant or less focused information. Anyway, if you feel it’s worth going for a remark, try it and see what happens. Let me know.

  60. Alexandra says

I scored an overall band 9. I got 9 in reading, listening and speaking and 8.5 in writing! I am a student (Literature major) from Sweden. The tips I can think of after my own experience are to speak A LOT during the speaking part (I mean the full time that you are expected to speak. Rather that the interviewer stops you, than that you speak too little). Furthermore, practicing writing the writing part on actual test paper (which Liz has available here on her site!) was absolute GOLD!!! When I was to write the real test I felt so prepared ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Band 9 Overall !!! Fantastic!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m really pleased for you. I’m glad you went into the exam feeling ready – that is important. And I completely agree with your comments on speaking – keep speaking until the examiner stops you. Let the examiner decide when to move on to the next question. Well done again with your great score ๐Ÿ™‚

I work in IT as a system administrator and have been working in a English speaking country for 13 years now.
I took my exam twice in Melbourne and each time I got a poor mark in writing.
    – results for 7/04/2018 are: L 8, R 9, W 6.5, S 8 & Overall 8
    -results for 12/05/2018 are: L 8.5, R 8.5, W 6.5, S 8 & Overall 8

For my second attempt I used your website and I believe I followed the instructions, the format, the linking words and also made quite sure to keep between 160 and 180 words on W1 and 260 and 280 words on W2.

It is clear I’m doing something wrong, so I guess some training is required on this.
I am so gutted that I only needed only .5 to get the mark I needed.

    • It’s a shame you didn’t hit band 7. The main reasons are either:
      1. Too many language mistakes.
This means you are taking chances with vocabulary and trying to impress the examiner – this can result in poor word choice which lowers your score.
Also grammar mistakes lower your score. You need to make sure you are proof reading and make sure you have idenitfied your common grammar mistakes.
      2. Problems with technique.
This might be that you are not fully addressing the issues in the question directly. It might be that you are not following instructions enough – many students don’t actually follow them properly. It might mean that you are not planning your supporting points – most people plan only main ideas.

Your use of language will need to be checked by you carefully. Any technique problems, get my advanced writing task 2 lessons. Click here: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

  73. Ash says

Liz thank you so much for your lessons and wisdom. I must admit my preparation for IELTS was not at par. I just did one full test. But, your tips stayed with me. I recently completed her Masters in Public Health. I have been studying English since the first standard. Due to my nervousness and conflicting demands I have not practiced much. But your simple explanations stayed with me even when I was taking my test. I am so thankful to you as I was able to complete this test in the first attempt.
    My score is as follows:
    General IELTS
    S:8
    W: 7.5
    R: 7
    L: 8
Writing: I made the greatest mistake of writing too much in task1 and was short of time for task 2. But your purchased lessons had helped me in understanding the task response. Even though I was short of required work limits and had not concluded my argument, I managed to score. So, a suggestion to others no matter how amazing first topic looks, stay in the time limit. I took 40 minutes to write my letter and had to complete the essay in next 20 minutes.
Speaking: Even though I am a fluent speaker, I had not practiced/ rehearsed speaking. I will strongly suggest everyone ‘look at the recent topics given on the website.’ After my test when I came back I noticed my topic was one of most frequently asked question in the month of March. I had a pretty abstract topic. If I would have looked at the list of topics, I am sure I may have fumbled less and would be more organized in my responses. Another confession, I was so nervous about writing (as I am a horrible writer not only in English but also in my mother tongue)that I just did one writing task. Please do not do that. Your writing pace will improve with continuous practice. Ensure you have a person to check your writing if you are as unsure of your grammar as I was.
Listening: This is the only section, I had practiced religiously (6 to 7 tests). But, I had practised all my sessions with headphones on. Whereas, my region does not provide headphones. It took me off by surprise. I easily skipped three or four responses. So, figure out what is going to be used in your exam center and practice in the same way. It is important to practice a variety of test papers. The best source is IELTS Cambridge.
Reading: I took 3 or 4 tests. But, I was always stuck with 6.5 or 7 score. So my suggestion is to look at your mistakes, are you repeating them in all your tests, why are you repeating them, what is the correct responses and why you made that error. Please evaluate your test. Even though I am an avid reader and fast reader, my tendency to assume responses and overthink hindered my ability to correctly answer true false and match the heading.
Once again thank you for your time and really hope for your quick recovery.

    • Very well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips and experience ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello Liz,
Ordinarily, this post would have been about successful tips for the IELTS General Training exam, unfortunately, it isn’t. S
So here is my story. I have written IELTS General Training twice within the past four months. The first in Feb and second in April. Each time I got a 6.5 in writing. I am beginning to be worried as I am clearly not doing something right. Since this post is about our result, in the April 21st exam my scores were 9 Reading, 8.5 Listening 8 Speaking and 6.5 Writing. In February my scores were 8 Reading 8 Listening 8 Speaking and 6.5 Writing. Need i add that each time i used the practice tips on your website.
I would have loved to talk about my preparation approach for my relative good score in other areas, I am not sure it will be helpful since my writing seems to be pretty bad.
Please what am i supposed to do. Thanks

    • It is common to get stuck at 6.5. It is either due to poor technique, which is about not understanding what the examiner is actually wanting. Also it’s about English – avoiding errors and also avoiding using learned phrases or expressions. All errors lower scores. A tip I feel like sharing is to practice the speaking with a person who would know well what the test requires and how much time one should take in order to answer the questions. My practice partners and I weren’t so strict about it, so at the real test I was really nervous because of that.

This was my 2nd attempt with first one in November 2016 and when I got L-9, R-8.5, S-8, W-6.5. Over the last more than 1 year, I contemplated many times to write IELTS again as I was very disappointed with my writing score which was primarily due to my lack of time management.
I registered for the exam on 7th April during end of February and this time did only selective practice only from IELTS Cambridge 12 and previous official test series. I was confident in Listening and Reading. Especially for writing, I focussed this time only on maintaining my focus on time management and answering all parts of question. I revised the basics of writing from Ieltsliz website and other books published by Cambridge IELTS. Voila, I was pleasantly surprised to get 7.5 in writing. I would be glad to provide any other help or share my experience in details, should someone in India requires it. Good Luck!

I think going through your tutorials for writing helped me and i would definitely suggest everyone to also purchase the same.I cleared my exam in the fourth attempt with the past three attempts i missed out by 0.5 in one of the sections everytime. My suggestion to everybody for writing in particular would be to practice writing on a piece of paper atleast 3-4 days before your test.Since we do most of the things on computer,it will certainly loosen your hand muscles and you will feel more comfortable in writing during the exam.Second one should not over do giving too many tests before the exam as it certainly affects productivity. In the end just want to thank you for all the guidance and strength that you provide to all students.I wish you the best of health and wealth always

So i gave my ielts academic module exam and have 7 or above 7 in all parts except writing but i explained both taks quite well although there were some repetitions but the word limit was quite enough. Do you think its worth trying for remarking my writing exam?

  105. Nikita Palta says

    Hi Liz,

I am from India and appeared for the IELTS test on 24th March. I got my IELTS result last week. This was my first attempt to IELTS.

I scored 8.5 overall band (GT)
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 8.0
    Speaking: 8.0

I would like to thank you for all the tips and tricks you have been sharing with us. You indeed are doing a great job!

I took around a month’s time to prepare myself. I went through all your tips and has all the minute details or traps that IELTS throws at us on my mind throughout the test. I also solved some test papers from Cambridge.

From the beginning I was quite confident about achieving the desired score in writing as I have been good at writing and developing ideas since childhood. My teachers at school always acknowledged that I was good at imagination and in putting them into words.

I gave a few mock tests, only to realize that listening is going to be the toughest for me.
I decided to practice listening on daily basis and ensured that I solve at least one listening test paper everyday. I analyzed my answers and reasons behind getting them wrong – mostly it was plurals or the articles that I used to miss writing.
One more hurdle in listening was to miss on information when the answers to multiple choice questions were long sentences. I realized I could either read the sentences or listen to what is being said, I found it difficult to multi-task.
So, I used a trick – I just read the questions before hand and marked its keywords and just concentrated on listening and understand the gist of what the speaker is trying to convey. That was enough for me to mark answers in questions where the answer was listed, and exact word was not expected from me. And I am happy it worked for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Key to crack listening is to listen with CONCENTRATION. Our mind at times keeps wandering and we miss on things. I had realized this during my practice tests when while listening I used to start thinking of other things and then miss on the information. I remember telling myself at least 4-5 times during the 30 mins of listening test to come back to the examination hall and just FOCUS!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Do not panic if you miss questions and try to come on track is one more tip that helped.

Reading again was something under control. The trick I used to manage my time well was, I kept an eye on all the questions related to a passage all at once. Specially for the last section this trick really worked well.

For speaking, I had just read all your topics, and had some thought associated with it. I did not really prepare content, but had some incidences and props in my mind for each topic. Initially, I used to be out of content for the entire 2-3 minutes (I had prepared speaking for 3 mins instead of 2 to be on a safer side). My husband suggested, to start with a little introduction and talk about surrounding things rather than directly starting your actual topic.
For example: Traditional item/product of your country – talk about the different traditions and cultures that exist, which tradition you admire, why?, then talk about the actual product. This strategy helped me a lot. This also left a scope to improvise my answer on the go, as in, if you are out of ideas for one product, you could start about another one.

I thank you for making an effort to segregate all types of questions and for providing extra details about each question type.
Understanding the format was very helpful to hit a high score.

You are indeed a wonderful teacher. Kudos to you!!
Keep up the good work and all the best for your future endeavors!

    Warm Regards,
    Nikita Palta

  107. Madhvi says

    Hi Liz,

There was just one month between the day I decided to take the IELTS and the day of the test. I came across your website midway through my preparation, and I must thank you because your tips were very useful.

    I got my scores yesterday:
    Overall 8 (GT)
L 9 – I thought this would be the toughest for me but I got a perfect score.
R 8 – I second guessed myself on the T/F/NG, and I know exactly where I went wrong.
    W 7 – This is disappointing.
S 8.5 – I am happy with this score, the conversation was easy and flowed naturally, despite my nervousness.

I know it’s a good score, but I needed an 8 all across. I write quite regularly. I was confident of having ticked all the boxes for a high score on the writing test. Part 2 was an agree/ disagree essay, and I structured the introduction, paragraphs for both points of view, and conclusion. Do you think it is worthwhile to request a re-marking of the writing test? Although I haven’t really heard of many getting their scores revised by one band.

Irrespective of how this turns out, I would like to thank you again for how useful your website and tips were.

    Regards,
    Madhavi

    • Very well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ Your writing is certainly lower. Writing is often the hardest skill for people to tackle on their own because the examiner has specific requirements for the higher band score. There is only 1.5 difference between speaking and writing. If you feel that your writing ticked all the criteria to reach 7.5, then it is possible to consider a remark – but nothing is guaranteed. Make sure you wrote over the word count, and an overview in task 1 with a conclusion in task 2. Also check that you didn’t use any learned phrases and that each sentence was uniquely writing by yourself. Also read these pages: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-band-scores/ and https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2-band-scores-5-to-8/. I am so unfortunate to miss 0.5 in reading.. I want 8 in all modules for immigration purpose but now I am slightly tensed to go for the third attempt.

    What do you suggest?

    • Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ A clear improvement in your score ๐Ÿ™‚ If you miss your target by 0.5 in listening or reading, it means you close to your desired goal. Your performance in the test can change depending on concentration, topics and language used. I suggest you review all your techniques for each type of question – be strategic. Then review all answers from practice tests – even the ones you get right – this will show you where you are going right or wrong. Good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,
I took IELTS Academic on 24th of March.
    I’ve got band 7.5 overall.
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 6
    Speaking: 7

I used mainly your website for preparation and overall spent several weeks ( couple of hours a day) revising.
With listening and reading- also used IELTS books for practice, and all answers wrote in capital letters.
With listening – used half a minute after each part as an extra time to read the questions for the next part.
Reading – used recommended technique of reading questions first and then looking for answers in the text. Luckily there were no questions requiring to match headlines with paragraphs.
Writing- I was worried most about this part as I don’t do much writing in everyday life. Should have practiced more. Write, write and write!
It took me 30 minutes for the essay ( took me 40 min at the startof preparations) and had no time to look through and check for grammatical mistakes.
And had just about enough time to write a quick conclusion that was too brief and didn’t restate the initial statements.
Probably was too repetitive in the report ( world sources of fresh water) and didn’t paraphrase well. The same goes to an essay ( agree/disagree essay about use of social media everyday)
Speaking- almost didn’t prepared and paid for it with a relatively low score. The topic was about my favourite period in history.

    • Well done with your results and thanks for sharing your experience ๐Ÿ™‚ It is important that students do practice full tests at home using the IELTS Cambridge test books from 1 to 12.

Point is that he gave a month before and had scored 7 in writing previously. He feels he has done better than previous one and is disappointed with writing score. We need 7 in writing for application. Should he go remarking as he doesnot want to appear for another exam

    • Well done to your husband with his score. If he wrote over the word count in both tasks for writing and he also wrote an overview in task 1 with a conclusion in task 2, then it might be possible to consider a remark. There is only 0.5 difference between your speaking and writing scores. However, there is no guarantee that it will be successful, so it is completely your choice ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,

I am from India and appeared for IELTS on 24th March for the 2nd time. I got my score today and I am very happy to share that I have received an overall 8.5 band โ˜บ.

    Listening 9
    Reading 8.5
    Writing 8
    Speaking 7.5

This has been possible only because of you and your wonderful site. All the information and videos have helped me immensely in achieving this score.

In my previous attempt, I wasn’t sure which site to refer to be able to score band 8 and above, so I referred multiple sites and ended up getting overall band 7.5 only, however this time I just concentrated on your website and read all your tips, saw all your videos and practiced.

The way you have organized all the information is not available anywhere else. The material helps a lot in practicing for higher bands. Your lovely smiling face in videos always seemed to motivate me which boosted my confidence.

I would suggest people trying to achieve band 7 and higher to go through all of your tips, videos and practice tests. And also do some practice tests from Cambridge books 9-12 as per your advice and I think that’s enough as one can get all they need here…

I would again like to thank you Liz for all the help you are providing to the world, it’s appreciated more than mere words can convey. Kudos to you..

    Stay healthy..stay blessed..

    • Very well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m so glad you found my website useful ๐Ÿ™‚ Wishing all the best for your future ๐Ÿ™‚

My master tip for writing is to follow the structure of the model essays on this website, for each type of essay, whether it be discussion, agree disagree, positive negative development. Practice using these essays only, then enriching ur vocabulary yourself, and getting it checked at least once from a good teacher.

    Hi Liz

I am a homemaker in the Caribbean and I needed IELTS GT for immigration purposes. While I only speak English I wanted to tell you thank you for your fantastic site. I got an overall band score of 8.
    R: 9
    S: 8
    L: 8.5
    W: 7

    Personal recommendations:
R: Paraphrasing is a must in reading section. It helps you understand the jist of the passage faster. Also underline key words in the passage which will help with your speed in answering
L: learn how to be an active listener by twiddling your toes; I have a problem zoning out even during the exam and this helped me. Also be aware of tricks, IELTS would often answer a question without explicitly stating the question

Again thank you Liz, without your materials I wouldโ€™ve definitely scored much lower

    • A very strong score indeed ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips – very useful. Many people forget that IELTS listening is an active skill, not passive – well pointed out! So nice to see you come from the Caribbean – I’m sitting here in the cold and dark of England – wish I was there ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi liz,
I received my TRF lst week and i’m glad to let you know that i managed to secure an overall band score 8. I am a doctor by profession and i appeared on 3rd march 2018 for the general training module. It was first attempt. My scores are as mentioned below:
    L=8.5
    R=9
    W=7
    S=7
I strictly followed your writing structure and i also watched your advanced lessons.I’d recommend them to everyone who’s planning to sit the ielts exam.
I practised writing lots of essays by timing myself before the test and prepared questions from your recent exam questions page , and also from the cambridge books.
I used to brainstorm ideas , plan my essay and then wrote the whole essay within 40min. After that , i used to read some samples for the same topic , note down the relevant topic vocab from your website and then i used to rewrite the whole essay again by incorporating some ideas and vocab which i had jotted down. I noticed a considerable improvement in my writing once i started practising in this manner. I also used to share my essays in the wats groups i had joined, and people gave me suggesstions on how to improve. Apart from that, whenever i had a query i used to post on your website and your were always there to reply. I’m really thankful to you for it.
For reading and listening i practised from the cambridge books 1 to 12.
For speaking, i practised the cue cards from jan to april given on your blog . Since, i didn’t have a spaking partner, i timed myself and recorded my own vouce. This helped me to develop my frequency.
All the best to those who are appearing on 24th march. A big thankyou to you liz for the wonderful work you are doing for your students. Your blog is a real blessing for all ielts test takers.

    • That’s a great result – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ It sounds like you took a logical, strategic approach to the test – that is exactly right. I’ so glad you recorded yourself for speaking – it’s a great way to practise and develop ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,

I must say I used your website as the only source of preparation for my IELTS test, as I really needed help to refresh my memory on how such tests are structured. The last English test I had taken before IELTS was the Proficiency of Cambridge, about 13 years ago – time flies, and so does my ability to think like my 14-year old self back then.

    Anyway, here are my results:

    Overall: 9.0
    Listening: 9.0
Reading: 8.5 (I’ve always had a hard time with T/F/Not Given questions, even in my mother language!)
    Speaking: 9.0
    Writing: 9.0

Thank you for the abundance of tips & materials! Greatly appreciated.

    • Mania says

Let me elaborate on a few more details, as I am sure there will be others identifying with my situation.
My test center was in San Francisco, CA, and I took the academic module.
Given that my English was already at a good level, it took me 5 days to study for the test, while working full-time. Please keep in mind I speak/write in English in my daily life, and had also acquired plenty of English degrees / certifications as a high school student; therefore there was no type of question in IELTS that I had never seen before.

My tips for other individuals in my position are the following:

Listening: Probably the easiest part for all good language users. Your time should mostly be spent identifying the different question styles you might encounter. I took 1 practice test and looked at a couple more.
Reading: Remember that T/F/Not Given questions refer to what the text actually says, not what you think. The rest of the questions should be again very easy to handle for good language users. Again, I mostly spent time looking at question styles, rather than taking tests (only took 2 practice tests, mainly for the T/F/NG questions).
Speaking: My biggest fear was that the few minutes/seconds I had for each answer would not be enough to actually make a point (I talk A LOT). However, the examiner interacted with me to lead the discussion accordingly, which actually made it feel like an every day discussion. Fun fact: she kept me an extra 15 minutes after the recording for an actual conversation! In terms of practicing, I looked at a few topics just to get an idea of what to expect, and then I just let the generic ones (hometown, family, profession etc) brew in my mind the days before the exam. Again, remember I speak English every day, and it does make a difference.
Writing: Of course, the fear for even the greatest language users is time. You might be able to compose your essays very fast, but in my opinion there is a risk of overthinking things, wanting to give more arguments and/or expand on sophisticated ideas the topic might trigger in your brain, which will actually cause you to lose valuable time. On the day of my exam, I met another woman who was an excellent speaker and had been living in the US for years – even had a green card. After the exam, she told me she ran out of time in the Writing section, what a pity! In a nutshell, look at Liz’s sample essays and identify how your ideal structure should be. When developing arguments, I prefer to stick to 2 arguments for each side of the topic, as I am able to expand on each one of them (it was actually impossible for me to stay under 300 words for Writing Task 2). The instructions Liz gives are super clear, just stick to the “approved” recipe! They don’t actually care how much of a thinker you are. Needless to say the Writing section is the one I focused my studying on. I wrote a total of 4 essays for each Writing task (not much more I could do in a week full of work!), and I self-corrected them in terms of how they could be more concise. After writing the first one and seeing I should write less, I studied the model essays provided here and then wrote the rest of my own; the improvement was significant.

Good luck to everyone! Once again, thank you, Liz!

    • Band 9 Overall – Fantastic !!! A great achievement ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚

  126. Manoj Babu R says

    Dear Liz,

I took IELTS General in Dubai (for the first time) two weeks before and got my results today.

    Speaking: 7
    Listening: 7.5
    Reading: 7
    Writing: 6

    Overall: 7

I wish to thank you wholeheartedly for your website/videos for the immense support. I didn’t prepare well for the writing test since I was targeting for 7 band each. Anyway, I am positive towards my next attempt and will highly depend on your materials.

I am a chemical engineer, wish to migrate to Canada/Australia and recently started preparing for the exam.

    Tips:

    Speaking
Please practise daily/regularly with your freinds/family members by recording your speech. You can find where you get stuck. Avoid self-corrections, pauses and thinking for the mistakes done.
Be relaxed, watch your breath and stay in the moment! that is the key and will make a difference.

    Listening
I find it easiest part of the exam as I am a movie maniac. Practise with practice tests and listen to real-time news/movies/documentaries/educational stuff. Just move on if you don’t get an answer for a particular question and you can recall/guess something at last. This approach will keep you focused and avoid panic.
Obviously, this section can help you get a higher overall band.

    Reading
I spent more time on easy initial questions and had to rush for questions 30-40. Felt answering the last ten questions first would have helped me. Time management is challenging and practising more will surely improve the band. Sometimes we make assumptions subconsciously and hurry up to confirm the answers. This needs to be avoided. Allotting time to check answers (5 or 10 mins) is essential and ready you for the writing part with the calm mind. The advantage of this section is the break time (to drink water or to go out for the restroom) which you can take. A possible break will keep you relaxed and energetic.

    Writing
I didn’t reach 7 band which was my target. I spent more time on letter writing and rushed for essay writing. Writing the essay first would have increased my band since it has more weightage. Again, allowing time for checking is mandatory. I am going to prepare well and practise more for my next attempt.

All the best for all the aspirants!!
Once again thank you very much Guruji (Liz)!!!

    Best Regards,
    Manoj Babu R

    • Well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your experience and tips ๐Ÿ™‚ I really like your speaking comment: Be relaxed, watch your breath and stay in the moment! – advice that is good for life itself ๐Ÿ™‚

  127. Bilal says

    Hi Liz,

    Before I share my score, I would like to highlight that your website is THE BEST source for someone, like me, who need to have all the guidelines and training material at one place. I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession and I took IELTS GT on 3rd March 2018. However, I managed to get 8 band overall, I am a bit disappointed by 7 band in writing as I was expecting 7.5 or more. My score details are as below;

    R: 9.0
    L: 9.0
    W: 7.0
    S :7.5
    Overall: 8

    Reading Tips:
1- For me, Paraphrasing is the KEY. Whenever you are reading a question, you should ALWAYS think about alternate words before looking for your answers.
2- Understand T/F philosophy clearly. It’s not about what you understand, it’s about what the statement is telling so while finding answer, look for the information (mostly paraphrased) not for the sentence.
3- Try to complete Section-1 and 2 early. If practiced well, it can be managed easily in 30-35 minutes. Spare AT LEAST 25 minutes for the last section.
4- For T/F and Blanks, no need to read all question at once because you wouldn’t be able to retain. Read two questions and look for the answers and then move to next questions (two question at a time). This practice helps to save time and you always know if you have missed an answer (because you will find answer for 2nd question).

    Listening Tips:
1- As per my experience, if you know how to use your time wisely at the start and end of each section, you will never feel disengaged with the conversation. I repeat practice using this time WISELY.
2- Section 1/2 are the easiest.
3- Section 3 (specially MCQs): Don’t fall to same words mentioned in answer options (they are usually traps). Focus on the following two things and you will find all the answers.
    A- Alternate words for answers
B Complex Sentences specially where the entire meaning is changed if you miss words such as Although, However, Though, Despite, Nonetheless.
4- Section 4: Always make sure that you have understood all the questions clearly (it’s crucial to read all the questions before it started)
5- Usually statement follows the answer so you need to be a proactive listener.
6- ALWAYS have a look at the next question.

    Thanks
    Bilal

    Dear Liz,

I hope you are enjoying your holiday? I wanted to take the time to thank you for helping me with my exam. I am from the UK and I needed a strong score for my professional registration in New Zealand.
I work as a Critical Care Nurse, so fitting the time into revise was difficult. I spent many a-night shift revising on break. I spent about 3 months going over the test, with the final month revising during my days off. Many people on the examination day felt I might have over prepared, but this is nonsense. If you want results, you need to put the work in.

I used your videos and website, including official IELTS booklets to revise and acheived the following scores:

    Overall Band: 8.5
    Listening: 9.0
Reading: 7.5 [T/F/NG and Y/N/NG were the most difficult]
    Writing: 8.0
    Speaking: 9.0

I would say my overall advice to candidates is to ‘play the game’ and prepare thoroughly. Remember, IELTS are not judging you against other candidates. What you put on paper, is what they mark.

Thank you again for your help. If you are ever in New Zealand, hit me up for a beer, I owe you!

    Yours sincerely

    Tim

  131. Hey Liz!

I studied for about a month and these were my results:
    Reading – 9
    Listening – 9
    Speaking – 7.5
    Writing – 6.5

Very disappointed with my writing. This was the task that I best prepared for. I did Cambridge books 10, 11, 12 and did several more writing tasks from your blog and other websites. I even did all of January and February 2018 writing tasks. After doing the exam, I thought I did very well and I expected at least a 7 or 7.5 in writing but I guess not… I know I don’t need the score right now, as I only needed 6.5 overall, but who knows if in a year or so I’ll need at least 7 in all tasks to do my thesis abroad… But oh well.

Thank you so much for all your help and I hope you get well soon ๐Ÿ™‚ Your website is amaaazing! I prepared all the speaking topics from January and February and everything I got asked I had already read in this website. ๐Ÿ˜€ Totally recommend!

I was disappointed with writing score, though I believed I did well in this part. Second part question was to plastic shopping bags should be banned. Do you agree / disagree. To what extent.
In introduction, I wrote I agree and I wrote two sides (advantages and disadvantages of shopping bags) in body paragraphs. That would have made impact on my score.
First part was to discuss two graphs in 2008, I wrote it in past tense.
Do you have any idea, behind this huge drop in writing band?

This time got
    Reading – 8.5

I am an aspiring undergraduate student from India. I want to pursue a degree in History in Ireland and hence I had taken up the test. Since it was the first time for me, I was extremely nervous. It was especially exhausting during the LRW section of the test. It was almost as if it was a test of endurance rather than that of English!๐Ÿ˜
I was taken aback by my results as I didn’t expect to do too well. Nonetheless I’m very pleased with the outcome.
I couldn’t have achieved this band score without your help and guidance!!!
Your online tutorials and videos were life-saving!!!
        God bless you Liz!!!๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ˜‡

        • Very well done ๐Ÿ™‚ You’ve got a good point – the IELTS LRW test is long and does require a reserve of energy ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m a medical doctor and I took the ielts test on 24th Feb in Abuja, Nigeria. This was my first attempt.
    Overall- 8.5
    Listening- 9.0
    Reading- 8.5
    Writing- 8.0
    Speaking- 7.5

I was really flustered during my speaking test and spoke under one minute in part two, I had to be prompted by the examiner to speak further. If I’d been a bit more relaxed, I’m certain I would have done better in the speaking. Overall, I’m satisfied with my results because I needed a minimum of 7 8′ each band.

I studied on ieltsliz for about a week and watched her YouTube videos to prepare for the test. The resources on this site really helped me, especially with writing and pretty much all of the speaking tests can be found here so it just takes practice. (I read a lot, I used to be a teacher and I do some creative writing- so my preparation was mostly to help me understand the test format and to practice) Thank you Liz!

    • Overall 8.5 is an excellent score and one to be proud of – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad my website was useful ๐Ÿ™‚

    W- 7.0
    S- 7.5

I’m working as an Analyst/Research in Mumbai, India.

First would like to thank you for your material and the content. I am okay with the score except the speaking where I though I’d get 8 or even more; rest I scored as per my expectations.

I need to buck up in listening since I have scored 7.0 in my last attempt ( this was my second attempt) and need atleast 8.0 in listening. Will continue with your content.

    Regards,
    Rohit

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ You need to tackle listening in a strategic way. Each time you do a practice test, think deeply about the reason why you got a particular answer wrong. Is it vocab? Paraphrasing? Key words? Concentration? Overload of information on the recording? Technique? Try to find the problem and I’m sure your listening score will improve. Also start immersing yourself in listening to English – see BBC videos, Smithsonian videos, travel videos – listen to videos and audios for all topics ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

    L – 8, R – 8.5, W – 7, S – 8. Overall – 8

I prepared for a month through different sources including your videos on youtube and unfortunately landed on your website only on the last day. Biggest mistake becasue while I was going through it, I realized this should have been my first reference for preparation.

Anyway, I’m ok with the results given the time I spent. My only grudge is with the writing where I believe I could have done better but may have missed out on the oppurtunity because of grammatical errors.

Thanks a lot for your tutorials and videos. They are the best material available on the internet. And let me tell you, when I was talking to few candidates at the center, they all were referring to your website. So I know you are the best.

    Regards,

    • Very well done with your result ๐Ÿ™‚ Although your writing isn’t as you wished, it’s still very good indeed – not many students can hit band 7 ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m so glad you found my site and that it was useful for you. Thanks for your support ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you Liz for your valuable videos and fabulous tips/material. It really helped me and my husband to prepare for the GT IELTS module (held on Jan 20th, 2018 in Singapore). We are experienced IT professionals.

My husband scored overall 7.5 and I scored 8 (but I got 8.5 in 3 modules but missed on Writing module 6.5 only). I had put Writing for remark but the result was no-change. I am really disappointed as I thought it was good enough for a 7.

We followed your website everyday when we prepared for the exam.
We thank you again for your generous help!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Well done to both you and your husband ๐Ÿ™‚ Shame about your writing score – it’s not easy hitting that band 7. Anyway, it’s an overall great result ๐Ÿ™‚

  148. Hey Liz,

We couldn’t thank you enough for all the tips you posted here in your website. It certainly helped me and my husband get Band 8 and Band 8.5 respectively for GT module. We used your website as our primary review material for the exam.

From the bottom of our heart, thank you again and truly enough we couldn’t forget this experience. We hope that you touch more lives as you continue to share knowledge to the rest of the IELTS aspirants.

Thank you again and God bless.

    Hi Liz,

    You are one amazing person.
With your useful resources, I was able to hit the following score

    R-8
    L-8
    S-7
    W-7

I am a software engineer from Mumbai and mother to a 10 month old princess. In effect, time was always a constraint.
I followed all your reading, writing, listening and speaking resources and with 2nd attempt, I could get the target band score needed for immigration.I had a band 7.5 in my last attempt and needed 8 in listening.

Reading – I realised, I should find answers directly to questions and read only that concerned part of text in a passage. Some other tips that I followed,T/F/NG to attempt
at the last, when you know the passage quite well.Underline options in the matching headings as well, so that you scan it quickly everytime you go through them. This ensured that I had enough time and so in my both attempts I got 8

Listening – I am a bad listener and sometimes when people speak a lot, I tend to ignore what they are saying :).My this habit cost me 2 ielts atempts. In effect, listening is more of concentration, one cannot lose focus.I gave almost 9-10 listening tests on cambridge ielts online material. Also one needs to go through list of compound words.

Writing- I am glad I followed your recent ielts questions before going to exam venue and bang on, I hit the jackpot :).In the meantime they give you answer sheets, I counted the lines and accordingly decided the length of the essay.Though this time I scored 0.5 less, and I dont know why ๐Ÿ™‚

Speaking-Again, your recent ielts exam question hit the jackpot for me.

Hey Liz, I cannot thank you enough.Wishing you the best of health and keep up the great work.

    • Very well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ And thanks for sharing your tips – very useful ๐Ÿ™‚

    Received my result today,

I just had week for Preparation and all i referred to was your videos and the tips. i am
planning on taking ielts general training, for immigration , by the end of march. Hope to score 8 or 8.5 in each module. Thank you once again.

  151. Hi Liz,
I am an IT professional from Bangalore.I had only a week’s time to prepare for the Ielts test and my speaking test was before the LWR test in the middle of the week.I received my scores today which is given below:
    Overall: 7.5
    L: 8 ( as expected)
W: 7 ( slightly disappointed here but I know my mistakes are not keeping track of time and not discussing both parts of the topic since i was given a discussion topic, that might have got me an average score. Also I didn’t count my words.)
S: 8 ( as expected , I got little nervous and my voice was shaky although the examiner was a very calm lady and pleasant to talk to)
R: 6.5 ( SHOCKING, ๐Ÿ™ I never expected this score since I had practised this section and was confident of an 8 or above score.)

Liz, could you please be kind enough to suggest me the next step, should i go for a reval for reading section especially or retake the test as I am targeting a score of 8.5-9.Has it helped people in the past to get the score reevaluated?

I would like to thank you from the core of my heart that even the 7.5 score in 5 days was not possible without your website. Its so well organized ,has such a vast content and of course your ever-smiling face ๐Ÿ™‚ Its a boon ! Keep up the great work .Thank you so much !

    Regards,
    TP

    • You’ve done very well. Shame about your reading. It is rare that a reading score changes after remarking. This is because the scores are based on right or wrong answers, not human interpretation. However, it is your choice. If you usually get band 7 plus in practice tests at home, then it is a good sign that a new test will be more successful. Also review your writing and make sure you are using the right techniques. Good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

  152. Hi Liz,

Hi Liz, thank you for the lessons :). Your videos were one of my sources for preparation.
Overall 8 (IELTS general test on February 10 2018)
    Listening 8
    Reading 8.5
    Writing 7.5
    Speaking 8

    What I learnt:
Listening needs full attention during the exam, be attentive even if you miss any information. Thinking of what missed in the past will reduce the score even more as you cannot concentrate on the audio.
Reading needs good practice on scanning and trimming which helps a lot in time management. Don’t get scared by the length of passage or paragraph. They are fairly simple and straight forward questions. Attentive reading is what that is required.
Practice writing essays and letters. Proof reading at the end is important to correct minor errors.
While speaking try to use good vocabulary, but don’t pause a lot in search of good vocabulary. Keep talking fluently while answering questions. Try to connect with the examiner with good eye contact and expressions which makes effective communication.

    • Well done and thanks for sharing your tips ๐Ÿ™‚ I fully agree about the need to keep speaking in the speaking test – fluency is essential.

  154. Hello Liz,

I work as a Business Analyst in Chicago.

While I did very limited preparation for about 3-4 days, all that I referred to was you site and all the tips you’ve provided for each section. Your content was crisp and concise and that helped me get an overall idea of what’s expected for this exam. Also, I believe if someone is comfortable with day-to-day english and attempt the exam confidently, you always have a shot at the score you need. Although I was skeptical about scoring this much in Listening after my exam, I’ve got more than what I expected.

Thanks again for all the amazing resources/work you’re doing.

Hi, this is Laila from Bangladesh. With a rewarding career spanning over 8 years at MNCs and INGOs, I am currently pursuing Masters in Media and Communication with concentration in Journalism.

I have had only a month to prepare for my IELTS that took place on January 20, 2018. With very limited time to practice, I couldn’t afford to spend hours on slow-paced tutorials or volumes of books on developing my skills. So I had to search for experienced educators who knew how to get their message across efficiently. And Liz’s website was one of those few places where I could get reliable and quality resources. It helped me a great deal. So thank you so much, dear Liz. May you be rewarded for your good deeds. With such timely guidance and by His ample grace and blessings, I gave an exam that was beyond my own capacity and the result was more than I could hope for. Yeah, I could complain about my low score in writing but I rather be grateful for what I accomplished instead of thinking about what I didn’t achieve.

I’m now a firm believer of online teaching/learning as well๐Ÿ˜€
Thanks a tonn Dear Liz. Respect to u!

    • It’s a great score, particularly for a first attempt !! ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad you found my site ๐Ÿ™‚

  174. Hi Liz,

First of all I would like to thank you for putting up such great IELTS learning material on web. Its by far the best all over web, you are awesome.

I got my IELTS results yesterday.
    L – 7, R – 7, W – 7.7, S – 7

I am really happy about this score but I need to improve my listening score, its really important for me.

I am just curious what could have affected my listening score.

What if I write CUSTOMER(S) as answer instead of CUSTOMERS
    OR
    A VENDOR instead of VENDOR.

I really think this is affecting my listening score.

    Please help me out here.

    • Well done with your score ๐Ÿ™‚ You can’t use brackets in IELTS listening. You must choose your answer. Also you must decide if the answer requires articles “a” or “the” or not. If you must complete a sentence, you need to pay attention to grammar. If you must complete notes, you don’t. Examples are often given so you can see the general format of the answers.

    Dear Liz,

I want to say BIG thank you to you for all your great lessons! You helped me get the score I need and improve my writing competency. I read your speaking and writing parts before I took the first exam in Nov. and got 8.5 for speaking listening and reading but only 6.5 in writing. Almost all my speaking topics were from your list of speaking topics! Great sharing! Then I spent all my time on writing part and eventually got 7 in my second attempt in Jan. This is what I did differently to prepare the writing part
    1) bought your writing test 2 advanced lessons and read the notes and samples many times!
    2) print out your sample essays for task 1 and read many times! Actually my test essay is very similar to the one with a table and two pie charts ( US fish import).
    3) practice, Practice and practice! For task one, follow your sentence structures for line, bar, table, map, pie…once I was familiar with it, it took me less than 20 mins to complete the writing; for task two, I applied your suggested essay structures and made the essay easy to follow and make topic senses of each paragraph very very clear! I think this helps achieve the 0.5 point I need in writing. I didnโ€™t use any โ€œadvancedโ€ words in writing and I even forgot writing โ€œ in my opinion, I think…โ€ to express my view in the โ€œoutweighโ€ question ๐Ÿ™‚ I was surprised but happy to see โ€œ7โ€.

Thank you and all the best!
    Jingzhong

    • I’m so pleased your writing score improved and you finally hit band 7 ๐Ÿ™‚ Well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing your tips. Don’t forget to let me know your profession ๐Ÿ™‚

i just came across your blog Liz when I posted the above result, your teachings should help me improve my score, as I have started to study and practice intensely on your blog. i have started observiing my mistakes. Thanks liz.

    • It’s a good score for your first attempt. The more you learn about the test and you get used to how the questions are written, the better. Good luck in your next test ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t forget to post your profession.

  178. Hi Liz,
Thank you so much for all the help I got from your website including the advanced lessons which were very helpful.
I’m a dentist and I got these scores on my first attempt :
    Listening 8
    Reading 8
    Speaking 7
    Writing 6
For listening and reading, I realized that knowing the type of word to look for was essential to get a high score.
For speaking, I believe that the overall communication with the examiner is what really matters. We understood each other very clearly.
As for writing, I ran out of time and could neither finish the second paragraph nor reach the word limit. I took your advice on never to leave an essay without a conclusion, and I think I wouldn’t have got a band 6 if I hadn’t done so.

    Thank you Liz very much.

    • Well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Time management is such an important thing in IELTS writing. You did well to get a strong overall score ๐Ÿ™‚

  179. Vipin Kirthane says

    Hi,
Thank you so much for your lessons Liz. I got:
    Reading – 7.5
    Speaking – 7
    Writing – 7 (after EOR, before 6.5)
    Listening – 8.5
    Overall – 7.5

I would like to donate some money, can you please point me in the right direction.

    • Very well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad to see your remark was a success ๐Ÿ™‚ Here is a link to a donation page: https://ieltsliz.com/donation-page/. I’ve only set it up today, so let me know if there are any problems with it. Thanks for your support ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Vipin Kirthane says

I wired the money. And by the way I am working as an Electronics Engineer and just got 447 points for Canadian express entry draw, which hopefully will allow me to get an invitation to apply soon. Its people like you the world needs, thank you very much for your help.

        Tips:
        1. I got a 0.5 from EOR (Enquiry On Result), so always give it a go, you may never know.
        2. READING: Don’t go with your guts when it comes to True or False, there will always be 1 or 2 questions which will be tricky and easy to make mistakes.
        3. LISTENING: you CANNOT lose focus even for a second when the audio is played, every second might cost you an answer each.

Good luck, by the way i got this score in the fourth attempt, so keep trying you will eventually win.

        Thanks a lot Liz!!!

        • So kind of you. I’ve just emailed you personally. Thanks for sharing your tips as well ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Hi Vipin,
Can I ask you how long did it take for the EOR results to arrive? I’m in the same situation you were and just sent an EOR on the writing (got a 6.5 but need a 7).

  180. Hey Liz!
First of all, thank you so much for such a great platform that you’ve provided for non-native English speakers just like me ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™. I took my ielts exam on january 20th, 2018 and I got 7.5 band overall(R:8 L:8 S:7.5 W:6.5).
Is my overall score considered as a decent one ?And is it worth it to object to my writing score ?

    • Well done ๐Ÿ˜‰ It is possible to consider a remark if your word count was enough and you wrote an overview in task 1 with a conclusion in task 2. But there is no guarantees it will be successful. It’s a choice you must make alone ๐Ÿ™‚ Band 7.5 is a strong score. However, you need to find out if it is enough for your future plans.

  181. Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9.0
    Writing: 7.5

  183. Dear Liz

I want to appreciate God for causing me to encounter your site. I saw it just 3 days to my test and I was already wondering what the test would look like. I wasn’t very confident by then.

The few videos I saw exuded mastery and confidence as well as composure which I needed to take my IELTS. I wish I met you long ago. I also had 3 days to prepare due to my workload. I am a System Analyst and a very busy one.

I was eager to check my unofficial result after my test on 20th Jan, 2018 in Enugu, Nigeria. I got my results yesterday.

    Overall – 7.5
    Reading – 6.5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7.5
    Listening – 8

That was my first time of taking IELTS.

Liz, you’re a great teacher. You’re very selfless. May God keep you in excellent health and state of mind to keep up the good work to humanity that you’re already involved in doing.

To all test takers, I recommend all Liz materials for your desired band. Practice a lot, aim high, focus, rest before the test day and concentrate while taking your test.

So finding time to prepare for the exam was really tough. On top of that, I had only about a month’s time to prepare. Your site was really helpful in preparing for writing and speaking tasks. Your tips on how to collect ideas and to improve the vocabulary helped me in achieving my current scores. Thank you so very much!
    My scores are as follows:
    Overall: 8

    – schools in your home town
    – how to meet new people in th e community
WT2: In certain countries, people are buying more and more products because there is more money available than in the past to spend. Is this a positive or negative development?
ST1 : Where are you from?
What do you like most about your home town?
Has your hometown changed a lot from the time you were a kid?
How was your first day in high school?
Which teacher did you like the most in high school and why?
Did you like studying science while you were in school?
    How do you check time?
Are you concerned about being late to some place?
What do you do when you are waiting for someone?
Do you think you will be judged if you are late for a meeting?

ST2: Explain about the science classes that you attended in your high school
ST3: Do you think the government should regulate the science researches held by private organizations / people?

Have you ever applied the science that you have learnt in your college / school in your daily life?

  187. Hello Liz,
I got my result today only, I gave IELTS Academics on Jan 20, 2018, I am a media professional, I got 7.5 band overall.

    Speaking 7
    Reading 7
    Writing 7
    Listening 8

I have done most of my preparation from your website only, I regret not finding it well ahead of time.
Although, I am happy with my result but what should be my score to get an overall 8 band.
The reason why I’m asking is another friend of mine got 7 band overall with following breakup: S: 7, L: 7.5, R: 7, W: 6. How come the difference of 1.5 points in our results has gained me .5 points only?
Many thanks in advance, you are doing a fantastic job! I have recommended your website to many of my friends.

  188. Hi Liz
I took the IELTS academic version on January 20th, at Toronto, Canada. I am a doctor by profession.

I say this to all the students preparing for IELTS that there is a ton of information on this website, and all of it is free of cost. Liz is doing an amazing and kind thing for us students and let us make the best use of that. Thanks a ton Liz and hope you feel better after your vacation

  193. Hi Liz!

My test was taken on Jan 20th, 2018 in Sรฃo Paulo – Brazil. I just checked my results online and I got an 8 overall! I couldn’t be happier!

    O: 8
    L: 9

    I just got my test result today. I am an Electrical Engineer and this was my first IELTS attempt. My scores are;

    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9.0
    Writing: 7.0
    Speaking: 8.0

I am overwhelmed at the moment. Thanks Liz for your help. Your website was my go to resource for preparation. Actually, I had attempted the CELPIP (Canadian equivalent) exam twice, but always fell short with my speaking. I decided to try IELTS because the speaking portion is done with a person rather than speaking to a computer as was the case with CELPIP. I am glad I took that decision.

    Thanks again.

    • I’m really pleased to hear your results – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, I agree that IELTS is a better test. It’s very unnatural to speak to a computer and I think IELTS made a wise choice making sure that the speaking is face to face with an examiner. My only wish is that they put cameras in the rooms to record the speaking test so they can monitor examiners behaviour more closely.

  195. Dear Liz,

today I got the results, band 8 overall.
I’m not completely satisfied, because I scored low in Speaking and Writing part of the exam. I’m not sure whether it’s possible to improve significantly within a month to take the test again. I needed a minimum score of 8.5 overall for the job I was planning to apply for.

    My results were:

    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9.0
    Writing: 7.0
    Speaking: 7.5
    ————-
    Overall: 8.0

    • It is certainly possible to improve in one month, if your English is good enough for a higher score. But it will depend on your ability to understand more about what is needed for a higher score and where you are going wrong. See my advanced lessons if you need extra training with writing task 2: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

I did purchase your writing task 2 videos. I used same structure that you provided and it resulted in 7.5.
I gave my exam on 20th Jan 2018 and I am a software developer.
    I scored L 8.5 R 6.5 W 7.5 S 7.5
I am disappointed with my reading score. I was pretty confident after the exam that i would score 8 bands. I do not know what caused this low score.

    Is it worth remarking??

    • Well done with your scores ๐Ÿ™‚ It is highly unlikely that your reading score will alter because answers are either right or wrong – they are not based on human interpretation. Of course, I don’t say it’s impossible, so the choice is yours.

  198. Hi Liz, I just got my test result back today for the Jan 20 GT test. I still couldn’t believe that I got a 8.5 overall score. • Mahboob A says

I am a Software Engineer by profession.
I want to ask a quick question from you please. My country of nationality is Pakistan and country of residence is United Kingdom, I received my IELTS test report today and International House London has written United Kingdom as my country of Nationality instread Pakistan. Is it possible if you can please guide me how can i get this changed? have you ever come across such issue, i am worried about this actually.
i would really appreciate your help!
        Many thanks

        • I think you should do two things. 1) Contact International House London and tell them the mistake – ask them to fix it. This is their problem to fix. 2) Also check with IELTS that certificates can be re-printed if personal details have been incorrectly registered. Try to do both and then you will feel more comfortable knowing your rights ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Mahboob A says

Thank you for you quick response liz.
I took my exam on 16 Dec 2017 as well and Country of nationality is correct there.
Should i send them that cirtificate too?
I am bit confuse, is International house issue the IELTS report? or do i have to ask IELTS seperately. IHLondon and IELTS are seperate bodies? if IELTS don’t issue new Report I would be in deep trouble then ๐Ÿ™

            • I do not know who processed your personal details. Did you give the wrong details to IH? Did IH give the wrong details to IELTS? I don’t know. Contact them both and talk to them. Of course they are separate companies. IELTS is a testing company and IH is a school. Don’t try to predict until you have spoken to both to find out who will fix the problem for you.

              • Mahboob A says

Thank you so very much Liz ๐Ÿ™‚

                  Hi Liz,
I called my Test Centre about the mistake in the country of nationality. Actually, it was me who entered country of nationality wrong. IHL asked me to send my original TRF back to them and pay ยฃ20 as a fees. Then they sennt me a replacement within 2 days.
thank you so much for the help ๐Ÿ™‚ you are a star!

Hi Liz. Thank you so much for your guidance and sharing on your website and all the videos. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I signed up for IELTS 20 days before the exam and started preparation only then during my time off work.

But with your materials here I have managed an overall 8.0 on my first try.๐Ÿ˜Š Could’ve done better I think but I am grateful as I didn’t have much time to prepare and was the format was totally foreign to me. Thanks again Liz! Highly recommended website for anyone who wants to score!

    Hi Liz,
Thank you so much for your guidance.
I have given ielts academic twice, my scores
    1st L-8. 5, R-8, W-7, S-6.5, O-7.5
    2nd L-8, R-7.5, W-6.5, S-8, O-7.5
I need 7 in all, really confused, my writing part was not that bad, do you think remarking will help, shall I apply for EoR. I am a pediatrician from India. Please reply

    • It’s possible to consider a remark as long as you wrote over the word count, and wrote an overview in task 1 and a conclusion in task 2. However, it’s never guaranteed to work. If it doesn’t work, review your writing techniques before taking another test. Good luck!

      • Roshni Gurnani says

Yes, I have done all that, will request for EoR and let you know the result, thanks a lot ๐Ÿ™‚

  202. Hello Liz,
Thanks for your wonderful website with loads of tips and videos.

I’m an MBA graduate from India, planning to migrate to another country. I had attempted IELTS general 4 times in the past 8 months. Below are my scores:
    Attempt 1: L 8.5, R 7.5, W 6.5, S 7.5
    Attempt 2: L 9, R 9, W 6.5, S 7.5
    Attempt 3: L 8.5, R 9, W 6.5, S 7
and finally my big and successful attempt,
    Attempt 4: L 8.5, R 8.5, W 7, S 7.5

I was not sure what was going wrong with my Writing every time, but always I felt I had room for improvement. I realized, I was attempting the exams without improving my writing skills, hence for the fourth attempt, I took a couple of months and practiced Writing tasks daily.

I purchased your videos, and they helped me immensely in my preparation. Moreover, the tips which come along with the video subscription were really helpful.

    Thanks a lot!!

    S- 8.5
    Overall – 8.5

Your blogs and videos have helped me so much! Really appreciate all the wonderful work youโ€™re doing.

    Best wishes!

  204. Hi Liz,

Thanks for all the lessons and videos. They helped me a lot during the preperation.
Got my IELTS result last week and these are the scores:
    Listening: 9
    Reading : 9
    Writing : 7.5
    Speaking : 6.5
    Overall : 8.0

I am quite happy with my performance in L/R/W but my speaking score is bit low.
I am rewriting the exam to improve my speaking score (more confident this time)

Once again, your website was very useful

    Thanks

    • Well done with your results. For speaking, remember to add as much as possible to your answers. The examiner doesn’t care about the information you give – the examiner wants to hear your English. So, add plenty of descriptions of people and places, stories, past memories, future hopes, comparisons etc. Good luck! See the model answers on my speaking page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-speaking-free-lessons-essential-tips/ Also let me know your profession when you post results ๐Ÿ™‚

  206. Hi Liz,

I sat for IELTS General Training Exam in Saudi Arabia recently. I scored
    L:8
    R:5.5
    W:6.5
    S:8

I am deeply disappointed with my reading score since I worked hard in this module and always score 7+ in sample tests. I belive the evaluation of my reading exam is an aberration based on the strenghth of other faculties.

What are the chances of success if I challenge my reading exam.

    Regards,
    Nyl

    • It is unlikely the reading score will change. The scores are based on right or wrong answers – not on human interpretation. So, the chances of mistakes are very low. However, the choice is yours.

  207. Natacha Ruyssers says

    Hi,
I am a Belgian surgeon planning a fellowship training in Australia for which I need to pass the IELTS.
My first attempt to sit the IELTS was in December 2017 and these were my scores:
    Listening: 9/9
    Reading: 8.5/9
    Speaking: 8/9
    Writing 6.5/9
    Overall score : 8/9
As you can see, I only had a low band score for writing. However, it kept me from being accepted by the Australian Medical Council (they require a minimum of 7 on all 4 topics) and I need to re-sit the entire exam.
At the moment, I am studying hard to improve my writing skills by watching the advanced videos on writing from Liz and by training.
Hopefully this wil result in a better band score in February!

For all students planning to sit the IELTS and have a degree: don’t focus too much on listening and reading because most of the time, you are already familiar with these topics. Spend most of your time on writing (definitely the hardest part of the exam) and speaking!

    Best regards,
    Natacha

Hi DF, What did you read to achieve 7.0 in writing? I’m stuck at 6.0 too. please help.

  209. I sat the Ielts test on January 13th. I achieved an 8 band overall. The resy of the scores are:

    • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ Make sure you review all your techniques for IELTS writing. As you had band 7.5 in speaking, your English is not a problem. • Well done with your results ๐Ÿ™‚ If your results are enough for your future goal, then be satisfied. There is no guarantee with remarking. Writing is particularly difficult for students to assess themselves because most students do not fully understand how the examiner marks their writing and what the actual band score requirements are. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t try for a remark. It’s completely up to you. Whatever you decide – I wish you all the best ๐Ÿ™‚

  218. Hi Liz
Hope you are doing well.Whatever I have achieved in this test,I owe it to God and a teacher like you.I attempted ielts thrice but always missed magic number 7778, finally got it.And I really want to give one message to all individuals who are looking for their desired bands that have some perseverance.Dedication and hardwork pays off.Sometimes things are not easy as they seems to be,but don’t loose hope , especially, when Liz is there ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I missed perfect 7 in speaking twice
    Third attempt

Finally the magic number is with me and I cannot express my happiness. The thing that I like the most in these three exams is that I managed to get 7 or 7.5 in writing ,while majority of people fall behind in it and believe me this is just because of you.Your tips and advanced lessons are blessing.I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you.

Thank you liz for the lessons you provided. it helped me a lot that even though it was my first time to sit for the exam, i was able to achieve the scores i needed. For everyone who will take the exam, just relax and keep it simple and concise. You dont have to use difficult words especially if you are unsure on how to properly use them. It’s better to use simple words and express your ideas clearly than to use “flowery” words you’re not sure of which can make your score to suffer. Most importantly, dont forget to pray. Do your best and God will do the rest. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Hi Liz can you please let me know whether our speaking band is marked by examiner or it is being marked by British Council or IDP authorities after listening our recording? The reason I am raising this question is because my examiner was taking naps during my test and she even sometimes asked me same question twice, I’m worried about my marks.

        • Your speaking test score is decided by the IELTS examiner who asked the questions. The test has been recorded so that you can ask for a remark if you are not happy with your results.

          • Thanks a lot Liz.

            • Hi Liz I got my result today and its L 8.5
              R 9
              W 7
S 6.5 As I told you about my speaking exam experience my examiner was taking naps during my exam, so should I go for remarking
              Please suggest

              • It is possible to consider a remark. But remember that nothing is guaranteed. You need to think about your performance. Did the English you provided show flexibility, a good range as well as accuracy?

              • Did you apply for remark?

    • I got 6 in IELTS I spent on 11 days. Self-study.

I gave my IELTS Academic exam on 16th Dec last year in Delhi, IN. I had my end semester exams till 14th Dec and hence had no time to prepare for IELTS. The little time I had, I spent it on your videos. It helped me secure the following band score –
    L – 8.5
    R – 8.5
    W – 7.0
    S – 7.0
    Overall – 8.0

Thanks for helping me clear IELTS and be eligible to study in UK.

  235. Hi Liz,

    I have got an overall band score of 7.5 (L:7.5, R: 7.5, W:7.5 and S:7). Test Date : 14-Dec-2017
I have referred to all your videos and training materials on this website and found it very helpful in comparison to the book “The Official Cambridge guide to IELTS”.

    Thank you So much!!

    Regards,
    Srini

I gave test on 16 December. L_7.5, R-9,w-7, s-8. Overall_8. I am happy with my score. It was my first attempt and I studied fr 7 days only though 7 hrs per day. My question is do I need to reattempt fr listening although I m happy with my score as I see a few comments saying 8 is required. My speaking questions-tell about a historical movie you watched. Do u like history. If given a chance would you like to study history. Then about inventions. What is greatest invention of mankind. What is the greatest invention at home. What are the disadvantages of invention. This is what I remember. Thank you

  237. My results were the exactly what I had expected walking out of the exam hall.
I had taken the UKVI IELTS academic on December 16 2017,with less than 2 weeks of preparation and a major panic attack on the day of the exam.I completely blanked out during my writing part due to lack of sleep.I couldn’t even feel my fingers moving.
    The result: L-9 R-9 S-8 W-6.5 O-8
The only advice I would say is to focus on mastering the IELTS exam taking skills and not waste time on a lot of resources.
I’m retaking the test in 2 weeks hoping to score the required band this time.

    • Band 8 is a great score, particularly considering how tired you were – well done ๐Ÿ™‚ You are 100% correct – students require lots of energy and concentration for the IELTS test ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Liz,
My name is Taran and I recently received my IELTS score as below:

    S8, W 6.5, L 8.5, R 8.5 OVERALL 8 BAND

I’m quite surprised and disappointed with my writing score. Do you suggest going for a Remark in this case as I need a 7 at the least.

    Thanks
    Taranbir Singh

    • Sorry I’m answering this a bit late. It’s certainly possible to consider a remark if you:
      1. wrote over the word count in task 1 and task 2
      2. wrote an overview for task 1 and a conclusion for task 2

    Hi Liz,

In my first attempt I gave exam on 02 November academic module. Although I went for coaching my score was: L,R,W,S: 7.5, 7.5, 5.5, 6

Then I solely referred your website and gave exam on 14 December again.
    My score is ….

Hence, Thank you very much for this amazing website. I took all your advice on speaking and writing and my score is improved by 2 and 0.5 band respectively.

I don’t know how to thank you for your exceptional tips and videos.
    Thank you again.

  241. Hello Liz,

Thanks for your awesome material and guidance. My scores are as below:

    L-7.5
    W-7
    S-8
    R-9

I am planing to re-take the test to improve my Listening Scores as I need at least 8 in that. The primary challenges which I faced were my short attention span and not able to keep pace with the recording while reading options in “Multiple Choice questions” and “match the Questions with the list of answers”.
I would be interested in opting for your advance lessons, if they may help me with the above.

It goes without saying that your lessons were a great resource during the prep.

  242. Hi Liz,

  248. Hi Elizabeth,
    Sadly my score is: L-9 R-8.5 S-8 W-6.5 O-8

I apologise for being negative but I don’t know whether to believe in conspiracy theory or not. My writing score is horrible and I am sure that I don’t deserve it. Being it the third time, I am stuck with one or other. While I got 7.5 and 8 before, this time, I actually performed better. But well, something in my mind says, IELTS does want me to go ahead and get the required score till I lose all my chances.

Nonetheless, you and your website have always been my favourite place of practice alone. I can’t thank you more!

    Best,
    Kumar

Just to update you, my experience with IDP was great. Since I also made a prior attempt with British Council which was a chaos in test organisation and bit rude behaviour.

  270. Hi Liz,

Just wanna highlight my gratitude, for the help I got from you and your website. Before I begin, I’d like to provide some background context. I’m from Malaysia (an ex-British colony and a member Common Wealth country) and although English can be considered my 1st language, we were really taught in Malay in our entire school system. Every subject is taught in Malay with the exception of English (and say Chinese or Tamil in the Chinese/Tamil schools), hence our use of English, though common, isn’t our first language.

I would’ve thought IELTS would be a breeze, for myself, but having sat for the General Training IELTS in 2012, and scored an overall banding of just 7.0, I know how difficult the Academic IELTS would be. I practiced a lot, but still lack the grasp on basic principles of 2 tasks, Reading and Writing. Then my spouse referred your link to me, and it really help put things into perspective about what each part is about. Your videos are VERY HELPFUL, even though I didn’t manage any 9.0’s, I’m very grateful for the guidance you gave. Especially difficult was the Academic Reading test, too many pages, too little time, and the results shows, BUT on the Writing test, you really help put things in perspective. When I practiced Writing test, short essay, I ended up with 300 words (for the 150 word task), as my attempt turned out to be an editorial with opinions and conclusions. After watching your coaching, it was much clearer what needs to be delivered, definitely not fancy language.

    Anyway, here’s my results:
    Overall Banding : 8.0
    Listening : 8.5
Reading : 6.5 (which was hell for me, it was very difficult to correctly complete in 1 hour)
    Writing : 8.0
Speaking: 8.0 (Generally Malaysians in Private sectors have no major problems with this)

While I’m dissatisfied with the 6.5 in Reading, despite your coaching, I’m happy with my Overall results. Again, much Gratitude owed to you Liz

  271. Credit is all yours…..!!!!๐Ÿ˜Š

I took my exam on the Nov. 25th and it was my first attempt! I used most of your free advice and tutorials, some official Ielts preparation tests and tips and I’d like to thank you for your help as I found the videos and everything very useful. Wish you all the best!

  276. Hi Liz! I’m from the Philippines and my first attempt was last January 2017 but failed to get a 7 in both speaking and writing, and I didn’t bother to have it rechecked since my teacher/friend told me my essay was tangential. I took the exam (academic) again in British Council last 5 October 2017 here in Riyadh KSA and received my results:
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 6.5
    Speaking – 6.5
    Total Band Score – 7.5
I was disappointed with my results as I’ve reviewed for several months with a private tutor and availed your advance classes and free materials. I know in my heart that I did my best and opted for an EOR although my teacher said that it’s unlikely that my grades would change, he, too, was devastated with the outcome. Seven excruciating weeks later I finally received my results yesterday:
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 8
    Total Band Score – 8
I was in shock when I read my scores. My speaking score jumped by 1.5 band! Writing, too, went up by half a band (the most important part for us nurses). Glory to God! I hope my persistence, patience, and “stubbornness” will inspire others since I haven’t seen any success stories of EOR from the internet or from forums. They’ll also return my money! Thank you Liz for your website and for offering discounts for your advance classes. Your teaching style is straight to the point and was highly recommended by my tutor. You’re heaven sent! Continue to be a blessing to everyone, God bless! :*

    Hi Liz,

    I got my IELTS results.

    Speaking: 8.5
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 7.5

This was my second time attempting IELTS since I got a 6.5 for writing last time. I mainly used your online lessons to practice and it helped me a lot. Thank you!

I am happy with my results, however I am wondering if I should apply for a re-mark to see if I could get a 8.0 for writing. While I was confident with my Task 2 answer I ran out of time to check my Task 1 answer therefore, I believe there should have been some mistakes. Please advice!

    Thanks,
    Yohan.

  280. Dear Liz, thank you for your wonderful website, great tips and videos

I am from Malaysia and took my IELTS Academic Module on the 11/11/2017 in Manchester

    L – 8
    R – 7.5
    W – 7
    S – 7
    Overall 7.5

My first attempt was in August 2017 (Manchester) – unfortunately I only managed to score an overall of 6 band score in spite of 4 weeks of preparation.
For the 2nd attempt i had less than 3 weeks to study – I kept practicing using previous and new mock questions, watching your YouTube videos and at the same time Try to Identify my weaknesses.
After the exam ended this time I was worried and concerned that I will not achieved the desired band score as I find that the question was harder compared to the last exam and there were moments that I lost my concentration especially during the listening and reading session as I did not slept well the night before
    Things that I learned:
    Keep practicing
Identify your weak areas – try to improve it
    Manage your time wisely
    Get enough sleep
    Try and try again

  286. Hello everyone,

I just got my results for my IELTS Academic that I attempted on 28th October 2017. I scored an overall score of 8.5. (Listening – 9, Reading – 9, Writing – 7.5 and Speaking 8).

I had a little difficulty with my reading with respect to time management. Spent too much time on the first reading it affected the others as I had to rush through the remaining. And of course in a state of panick even if the questions are easy, it becomes difficult to concentrate and answer correctly. I hope all will take the issue of time management very seriously. All the same, i got a great deal of information, tips and confidence from your website. Thank you.

  288. Alright.. Here is my story of IELTS!

    First attempt scores:

    Listening: 8
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 6.5
    Speaking: 7

I must say that I was devastated to see my score in Writing because I was more than sure that I will excel in both Writing and Speaking. Being a blogger myself, instead of spending time on Writing and Speaking, I did practice lot of Listening and Reading. And you can see that I managed to do well on those areas.

What one needs to know about IELTS Writing is that IELTS does not care how ‘interesting’ly you are able to write. Perhaps, you should focus on adapting your style to what is called as ‘IELTS Writing’. Learn how to do well on the 4 parameters that IELTS expects you to be good at.

After my first attempt, I did buy Liz’s Advanced Lessons and it is not a secret anymore that that they are super good. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Below are my scores:

    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 7
    Speaking: 8

Good luck to all of you!

  289. Hi Liz,
got my results a few days ago:
    L: 7.5
    R: 8
    W: 7
    S: 8.5
    Overall 8

I am very happy with the results, as reading went terribly wrong and I almost left during the exam ๐Ÿ˜ I struggled with text 2 and 3 and totally panicked, so when the time was almost up I made a wild guess in the last 10 minutes to write down the remaining 20 answers, as I hoped I would hopefully get at least a few points extra. As you can imagine I was more than surprised to see 8 for reading.
Now I am wondering if there was a mistake during the correction process that lead to this unexpected result.
Do you think this is likely? I don’t know how the correction process is structured, just wondering A LOT.

  290. Hi Liz, checked my result online. Did the test on the 2nd of November, and here are the scores below;
    Speaking: 7:5
    Writing; 7:5
    Listening; 9
    Reading; 8.5
    Overall; 8
All thanks to you Liz!!! You’re a great teacher. With my result I’m good to go. Thank you!
