  1. Hi Liz,
Thanks a bunch for the wonderful guidance and study material. Earlier i didn’t know that we can share our score over here so I didn’t know how to thank you. Fortunately I found this link today. I took the test on 29th of July and I got the required bands thanks to you. My requirement was 7 in each module except for listening in which I needed 8.
    My score is: L-9.0, R-9.0, writing-7.0 and Speaking-7.5. Overall-8.0
    Thanks again.
    Keep up the good work.

    Hi Liz,

You are really an amazing teacher and you lessons have helped me so much. My scores are
    Over all : 8
    Listening 9
    Reading 8.5
    Speaking 7
    Writing 7
Thank you so much. 🙂 I have passed on your lessons to many of my friends ho are attempting IELTS in the near future.
    God bless you! 🙂

  3. Hi Liz…

I appeared for my IELTS for the first time on October 28 and i scored an overall 8. Thank you Liz for the excellent tips, materials including sample questions for each section. They were all very helpful.

    My scores are :
    Listening – 7.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Speaking – 8
    Writing – 7.5

    Overall – 8

I didn’t devote much time for Listening probably because i gave two practice tests when started preparing for it and got about 39 out of 40 correct. I messed up the listening during the exam where in i missed out a couple of questions and got tensed, somehow i regained some composure to get back on track. I must say it’s easier to say ” stay calm and focus on the next question” but in the moment you actually mess up.

However, the other sections i did prepare better. I think
I could have fared much better in listening had i not neglected it.

I did achieve my target of getting over 7 in each section and i happy about it.

Liz i must say, all of your videos are quite precise and to the point. They really help a lot.
I thank you for all the material.

For all the test seeker, I wish all the luck in the world. Prepare well, no shortcuts really.

    Cheers,
    Sunit

  4. I took IELTS on the 14th of October 2017, my scores were L:8, R:9, W:7.5, S:8. Thank you Liz for all the tips on your blog. I may have to write again (after a lot of practice) because I need a band score of 8 in Writing. But your site is amazing and I have recommended it to other test takers.

  5. Got my General Training results yesterday:

    Reading: 9.0
    Listening 9.0
    Writing 7.5
    Speaking 8.5

Thanks for all the help and tips, really appreciate it!

  7. Hi Liz,

Your site helped me a lot in IELTS prep. I had just 10 day for the preparation and I read all of your articles which bolstered my confidence. I got my results yesterday :
    Overall : 8.5
    Listening: 9
    Reading : 9
    Speaking : 8
    Writing: 7.5

I was a little disappointed with my speaking score as I was expecting a perfect score. Nevertheless, I am happy with my results. Thanks a lot for the youtube videos and the site.

    Tips:

I studied from Cambridge IELTS prep book and road to IELTS
    Liz videos and site
Also watched official IELTS test videos on youtube
Improved vocabulary from GRE prep app.

  8. Hi Liz..

    Speaking -9

Thank you again. You are a wonderful teacher. :).

    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 8

  10. Hi Liz,

I’d like to thank you for sharing such a wonderful tips and videos through social media. It is evident that everyone(including me) appreciates it. My weakness was the Writing section, but I must say your advance course did pay off. I had about 10 days of prep time which did not include practicing writing. However, I did go through model answers and the videos quite a few times.

I sat for my exam on October 28th, 2017. Below is my score breakdown:
    Overall: 8
    L:8.5, R:6.5, W:8.0, S:8.5

I am really disappointed with reading score. I wasn’t expecting such a bad performance, rather was expecting that score range for writing(since I took 35 mins for task 1 and the rest for task 2). Would you recommend applying for a recheck?

    Have a wonderful day!
    Ash

    Hi, Liz!
I’m from São Paulo, Brazil. I took IELTS Academic on October 28th.
When I first took a peek at the test I was really shocked by how time plays an important factor in it. I had about 10 days to prepare for the exam, and dedicated most of my time to the writing tasks. I managed to get an Overall Band of 8.5 (speaking 8.5 / writing 8 / listening 8 / reading 8.5).
I just cannot stress how important all your tips were for my overall preparation. I relied 100% on them. Thank you very much.

  12. Bhavesh Dhanesha says

    Hi Liz,

Thanks a lot for all the knowledge you share. My overall score is 8.5:
    L: 8.5
    R: 9.0
    S: 9.0
    W: 7.5

I had around a month to prepare for IELTS. But due to my hectic work schedule could not devote time to it. But your videos and tips helped me to score the marks above. Your recommendation of paraphrasing and vocabulary helped a lot.

    Thank you 🙂

  14. Hello Liz,

I want to tank you for your videos and this blog. I’ve received my academic IELTS results today.
    Overall – 8.0
    R – 9.0
    L – 8.5
    W- 7.0
    S – 7.0
Although I still need 7.5 from writing and speaking with your help I’ve improved my writing in 3 months from 6.5 to 7.0. Once again, than you for being such a great and helpful tutor.

In writing pert one I had to describe a table and two bar charts about number of doctors in Australia, they were divided by gender and place of birth.
The second part of a writing task was a discussion essay about whether parents should teach their children to recycle or it’s a responsibility of school administration.

During the speaking I was asked to tell about a happily married couple, other questions were about wedding ceremony and family traditions in my country.

  15. L – 9
    R – 9
    W – 7
    S – 9

    Overall 8.5.

I knew I would score low in writing, 2 main mistakes – 1) wrote a paragraph after conclusion, since I was not sure if I had hit the 250 mark. 2) did not provide specific examples.

Thank you, Liz! This website really helped. 🙂

I primarily used your write-ups and videos for the writing task 2. They were of great help. I was able to improve my score from 6.5 to 7.5. A BIG thank you for that.

However, I was disappointed that my speaking score dropped from 8 to 7. Probably I should have seen your videos on this topic also:) . In any case, I achieved the desired scores, so I am content.
    My score is: L-9, R-8.5, W-7.5, S-7 Overall-8

Thank you very much for your support. You are doing a wonderful job.

    Overall – 8.5
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 8.5

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful website and all the amazing videos you have uploaded. All I had was just 2 weeks of preparation time , so I had to juggle the learning with my work and household chores . A family friend recommended your website and I took an instant liking to your online teaching classes the very first time I saw them. I would spend at-least an hour or two listening to your splendid videos,on a daily basis for a fortnight. Writing was the section I was afraid of the most ,but all of the tips which you mentioned helped to stand me in good stead. It’s an absolute delight to watch your videos since you’re just oozing with so much of positive energy and warmth. Your smile certainly helps to dispel all the apprehensions a prospective IELTS candidate would have.If I come across any co-worker or friend preparing for IELTS I’d recommend your website assuring them that the only preparation they need is to just religiously follow whatever you teach.Once again thanks a lot and God Bless you.

    Thanks & Kind Regards
    Jerry

    Dear Liz,

Thanks for the valuable impact, I did my first ielts exam in January this year, I had:

    Reading 6.5
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 6.5
    Listening 5.5
    Overall 6.5

Then I stumbled on your site courtesy of a friend. I went through all the advise and practice lesson, and I took the test again on 14th October. It came out great

    Listening 7.5
    Reading 9.0
    Writing 7.5
    Speaking 7.0
    Overall 8.0

The issue though is that my Country, Nigeria, is competitive. I need a minimum of 8 in Listening for cec. So I have decided to take it again.

I however must appreciate your valuable impact. Now I am more than confident to take it again

    Hello Liz,
I did the test in Lagos, Nigeria (General Version) on Oct. 14th for the first time. Online results today reads:
    Listening 9, Reading 9, Writing 8 and Speaking 7.5. Overall band: 8.5
I’m not so surprised about the speaking aspect. I found it a bit difficult given that most of my questions were about Art: contemporary art, modern art and a whole lot of Qs I had little or no ideas about.
I had exactly one week to study so I created a study plan. One day for each module, put in at least 10 study hours each day and I spent it on your blog – the videos, tips on answering questions (especially T,F,NG questions, thanks for those!), finished all practice tasks on your website and numerous Cambridge practice tests. For Reading, I practiced with the Academic test samples rather than the General’s since they are a bit more difficult. For Writing, I equally found ieltsonline.com helpful. They upload lots of writing tasks from previous IELTS exams for test takers.
Two things helped: your blog and practice. A lot of practice. Thank you so very much for the resources and materials you provide. God bless you real good.

I am happy with my result as I had only two weeks to prepare.
You have an extensive list of essay topics as well as speaking topics. I didn’t have much time to write many essays, but I practiced by gathering ideas for all the essay topics. I believe it really helped me. Also, I read many band 8 and 9 essays.
One more thing for which I would like to thank you is for the video in which you said it is alright to use short forms ( T, F and NG) in place of full word in Reading section . Actually, while practicing at home I used to write only letters, and during exam without realising it I used short forms. After my exam I was quite worried about using(TFNG). I searched online to check whether it is alright to use short forms or not, and the first site that I opened was yours and you gave a positive reply in your video. I was so relieved. I wrote to Idp as well and they replied that although they don’t recommend it, but examiners may consider it.
I am happy that I got band 9 in Reading.
Thank you once again for providing such a useful website

  35. Dear Liz,

I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to your website. It has greatly helped me in achieving the required score. I am very grateful for your responses to my queries and I find that among all other websites that tell me to follow a specific format or use specific words, you were the one who supported that our opinions are all alright and that we can use multiple structures to get the score that we need.

    My Overall band score is 8. Speaking= 8.5, Reading= 8.5, Listening=8.5 and Writing= 7.

To be honest, I was very worried about my writing since I had no one to assess my work. When I checked my work I just patterned it from your samples.

Moreover, I cannot stress how much emotional preparedness can really affect your score. It’s something that I have underestimated and have not prepared for; that’s why I thought I wouldn’t even get a 6.5 in writing.

Here’s what happened to me. I found the reading and writing portions quite easy because I had finished about 5 Cambridge books and I have an overall grasp of what my band score would be for these before taking the exam. For speaking, I have had my fair share of public speaking so I wasn’t so nervous at all too. However, for the writing part, I knew that this was the most difficult task to accomplish but I didn’t know how stressful it is to actually write given the environment and situation of an examination room.

Indeed, time can be your friend or your worst enemy. On top of the time pressure, you have to deal with other stressors and distractions as well during the exam. Let me name a few.

    1. You will be in a room of people who are fighting for their dreams and who are nervous as hell. You may start off confident, but the gravity of the situation will sink in as you witness the other test-takers send signals of their fears and plight. Humans are social beings and are very receptive of others feelings. I swear this happened to me. I began to become nervous as soon as I saw the other test-takers worry.

    2. You will be surprised at how time moves so fast. It was greatly my fault because I forgot to bring my glasses and I could not see the clock from a great distance without squinting my eyes (I was seated at the back row). I purely relied on the announcement of the time during the exam. Oh boy, It wasn’t much of a help because every time they announced the number of remaining minutes, I panicked!

    3. You will make stupid decisions and there will be no time to fix them. This is why careful planning is crucial. I personally found task 1 more difficult than task 2. I made the wrong decision to start with the difficult part first and since I was not aware of the time, I spent 30 whole minutes on task 1. When the proctor announced that only 30 minutes was remaining , I instantly started task 2 with a clear opinion in my mind but no pre-writing notes or structure prepared. It was a disaster.

    My tips:
    1. When Liz says to practice in examination conditions, please do. Practice with someone else giving out the time left and imagine that it is the actual exam. Maybe a review center will give you such an environment, but if you study on your own, imagine all the possible stressors you might encounter during the exam.

    2. Use the Cambridge books and read them twice. I find that reading the Reading Section of these review books was quite helpful in building my academic vocabulary. Of course the first time I read it was during practice exams by which I couldn’t really appreciate the text because I was too busy looking for answers. I decided to read it the second time, and analyzed the structure and ideas of the texts. This was my favorite part of reviewing for the IELTS because I particularly enjoy learning new things. Furthermore, I learned a great deal of collocations and sentence patterns that I was able to incorporate into my writing.

Anyway, I’m sorry for the long post. I am very thankful for your help Liz and I am recommending your website to everyone who wish to practice and review for the test!

    Hi Liz,
First of all, thanks a lot for making all this study material available for free, it really helped me in Speaking and Listening sections.
    My scores –
    Listening- 8.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 8
    Overall band – 8
I am satisfied with my results, however if I had got 0.5 more in writing, my overall band would have been 8.5. Nevertheless..
    My tips –
    1. Make sure you attempt at least 4 practice test.
    2. Focus on Listening and Writing more during preparation, they are the most deceiving sections.
    3. For speaking, practice speaking about yourself, your hometown (speciality of your hometown). For opinionated speaking tasks, have a firm opinion about the question and make sure you speak continuously throughout.
    4. For writing, its ok if you write one less paragraph but make sure you proof read what you have written for last 5 minutes.
All the best, don’t forget to thank Liz and post your scores after the test 🙂

    Hi Liz,

I’m a native English speaker and took the Academic version of the IELTS on the 30th Sept, after roughly two weeks preparation. What I will say is that I totally concur with what you previously had mentioned somewhere in your blog; it’s not how well you think you know English or speak it, it’s knowing what IELTS is testing and how the marks are allocated. I did a few practice tests which were fine, but thanks to your Writing vids, I think I averted a possible disaster in the writing section i.e. inclusion of overviews for Task 1 and making sure I had a conclusion for Task 2. I may have made a slight faux pas in not writing 250 words for the latter (could be mistaken) but overall, preparation and knowing the points being looked for, made all the difference.

With that being said, I got the following:
    Overall Band: 8.5
    Speaking: 9.0
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 8.0

    Thanks again!

    Hi Liz,
    I got my results today.
    L-8.5, R-9, S-7.5, W-7
I took the test 3,4 times just to get 7 in writing. I was getting 6.5 in all the previous attempts.
Thank you very much for your lessons, they were really helpful.
Hope you continue the good work 🙂

  46. Overall 8.5. Got band 8 in writing. Thank you very much for your advanced writing lessons. They helped me a lot. It gave me an understanding of the basic outline. All I had to do was put in my ideas. It, in fact, saved me a lot of time thinking about format, so I could concentrate on my ideas and language.

  47. Desperado says

    Hi Liz,

As you may recall I had some concerns over task 1 academic where there were two complex tables that I found difficult to describe in full. I made a complete mess out of task 1. I even booked an extra test in anticipation that I would not get the minimum grades required (7 across all aspects). I was worried that I would miss the boat for an excellent job opportunity in Australia with a very close deadline.

However the provisional results online gave some surprising results:

    Overal 8.0

    Listening 9
    Reading 8.0
    Speaking 8.5
    Writing 7

Looks like I just scraped by with writing. Regardless, I got what I needed. As I had paid the money for the repeat test I thought I might as well go ahead and do it again, just for the bragging rights in case I do better.

Thanks a million for your help. The Task 2 videos were extremely helpful. I think a strong task 2 got me out of trouble and neutralized the mess I had with task 1. If there are any interesting tables/ graphs/ charts for task 1 on my resit I will try to reconstruct them and let you know for the benefit of all other test takers. I may have more time to memorize details this time as I will be doing the test with no pressure.

    Kind regards

    Hi Liz,

I took the test on 30th Sep and results came today. My scores are
    R – 8
    W – 7
    S – 8
    L – 8.5
    Overall – 8

I’m quite satisfied with my results although I was expecting lesser marks in writing. Your website has been of great help towards me achieving these results.
I practically did not practice my writing at all, and I got caught up by time during the test. I would strongly advise anyone to practice planning & writing well.
I’m thinking of retaking the test as I want to score at least an 8 in each. I’ll need to look for someone to mark my writings.

Anyone knows a well known & reliable person to do that?

  49. Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7
    Overall – 8.0

I am sure I did better in speaking but it really doesn’t matter because I am extremely happy with my result!! Thank you so much Liz for all your youtube videos & tips. My husband also chose to dedicate most of his prep time by going through your material.

  50. Hi Liz,
I am an Indian guy residing in US for past few years. I took my IELTS GT 2 weeks back for Canadian immigration reasons. I spent a little over a month self-preparing for the test and your website/YouTube videos have been helpful. I thank you for that.
    My score :
    Overall
    8.5
    Listening
    8.5
    Reading
    9.0
    Writing
    9.0
    Speaking
    7.5
Though I am disappointed with my speaking score, it’s something I was expecting. I have a valuable tip to share with test takers regarding speaking. Rest really well before the exam! It will make a difference to your score. I couldn’t sleep well the previous night and since my speaking test was scheduled much later on the test day , I was already sluggish during the test.. My spoken English was not fluent and couldn’t focus well on my thoughts. I wish I had taken the speaking test on a different day focusing entirely on that section . So if your center allows that, go for that option.
For reading and writing, I would suggest your website and Cambridge practice tests which can be downloaded online. Your website gave some tips for writing which were very useful.
Finally, do you think it’s a good idea to ask for a
re-evaluation to see if I improve score in speaking? Could it lead to my other sections’ score getting lower? Please advise on this.

A big thank you for helping me through your tips!

    Hi Liz,

Thanks to your website, I got the scores that I wanted on my third try:

    Listening – 9
    Speaking – 8.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7

    Overall – 8.5

  52. Hi Liz,

First of all let me thank you a lot for this amazing blog. I have immensely benefited from it though I wish I had come across this earlier. Even then, I was able to learn a lot from your blog. God Bless You!

I gave my Speaking on 29th Sept and the others on 30th Sept . I got my scores today which are decent though I am a bit disappointed as I was gunning for 8.5. My scores are –
    Listening – 9
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 7.5
    Overall band – 8

Speaking topic was a plant which has already been listed in your blog and thanks to that, I was able to prepare a little in advance.

Writing topic 1 was – write a little to your friend informing him that you would quit your job and returning to your home town. Include –

    1. The reason to resign for the job
    2. What you intend to do once you are back to your home town
    3. A date and time for meeting your friend
Did not seem that difficult though in an attempt to make my handwriting legible, I started slow and overshot the 20 minutes time limit by around 5 minutes or so

    Writing topic 2 was –

Many schools are replacing sports and exercise lessons with academic lessons. What is your opinion on this ? How do you think this impacts the children.

Again here too I started slow which left me no time to check the essay for spelling mistakes. Also, I came across the tips on the connectors in your blog on the night before my test and couldn’t really practice all those tips because of which I could not do that well in writing.

A tip to all IELTS applicants – reserve 5 mins towards the end of each writing session to ensure you check the essay for any spelling mistakes and improvisations. During your practice sessions, plan accordingly

Reading was not that difficult and I seems to have 1 wrong answer from the score I got. Listening too was not that difficult, thanks to the tips on your blog.

All in all, a satisfactory score I guess. Again, thank you Liz

  53. Listening 8.5
    Reading 9.0
    Writing 8.0
    Speaking 9.0

  54. Hi Liz. I took the Academic test out of whim, and did not prepare as I wanted to see how well I was. However, the day before the test I found your site, and took a few pointers, mainly from the writing section. Understanding what is expected of the written pieces was very helpful and I think this would be the easiest one to improve with study and practice, for example planning/writing times vs length of the piece, order, etc.

I’m happy to say that I got an 8.5 band.(Spk 8.5 Lst 8.5 Rd 9 Wrt 8.5). I see how getting an overall 9 is a challenging thing, but I believe that with conscious practice and the support of tutors (such as yourself) it is achievable.

A tip I would be able to give, is that the only test in which you can control your time is the reading one, so I used that one to go for a short bathroom break! Drinking a lot of water is good (when you are nervous, and to avoid being hungry) but not too good when you need to sit a test for several hours… The listening test is timed to the recordings, and the writing test is always veeeery tight on time. So the reading test was the only one in which I could afford to leave for a few minutes. Maybe that can help someone XD

  55. Juhi Gonsalves says

    Hi Liz,

Your videos, blogs and articles were extremely helpful in my IELTS preparations.

I appeared for the exams on August 19th and scored 8.5 overall. I practiced quite a few sample tests for reading and listening. However, I had very less time to focus on writing practice and the results reflect the same. My breakup of score is given below.

    Reading: 9
    Listening: 9
    Speaking: 9
    Writing: 7.5

Thanks again for all the efforts you put into creating and maintaining this website.

    Juhi

  56. Hi everyone,

my scores were also put online exactly 13 days after the test and I got
    L:9, R:8,5, W:7,5 and S:8,5 so an overall band score of 8,5.
I had to get only 6,5 and was attemting 7,5 so in the end I was positively supprised that I got an even higher score.

For me the writing part was the most difficult one because I am not the best at structuring and sticking to a common thread. Also, I found it difficult to judge myself since there is no simple right or wrong as in Listening and Reading.
Therefore, I was really happy when I stumbled over this page with all the useful tips. A couple of days before the test I decided to get the advanced lessons for Task 2 in addition. I was lucky because there was a discount on the videos just at that time but in any way they are worth the money if you have trouble with the structure and the different essay types as I had it.
In the test I did not spend enough time on planning and my overview for task one included already more details than key features. When I realized that I did not have enough time to rewrite it but I did add some key words (e.g.”…and therefore forms the majority.”). For task 2 I was happy that I have had at least a glimpse in a vocabulary book and therefore knew a couple of specific words in the context of law and order.

Concering listening I think it is just about practise really! I had difficulties to understand fast spellings but found special exercises on the page. However, I was supprised that in comparision to various practise tests in my IELTS no number or name was repeated (and there would have been at lest 3 opportunities!). So do not count on that but try to get numbers and names the first time you hear it.

In Reading I learned to avoid a lot of mistakes by thoroughly reading the question and double checking answers. In practise tests I often lost points just because I thought I know the question instead of actually knowing it or I was to fast with answering it without reading the next paragraph. Do not forget that there always is the answer in the text! So if you feel like you have to interpret anyting to get the answer you might not have the right passage.

Finally, in Speaking I did not really do any practise tests because I felt quite confident. However, I read through the common topics (which are quite similar to the ones in writing, so it is really worth it!) and thought about 1 or 2 ideas or special words for each subject. In the test itself I did some really basic mistakes in word choice but luckily di not get lost because of that but just carried on. In the end, even though those 2 wrong words kept stuck in my head it had apparently no big influence on the score. So in my opinion, trying to stay calm and carrying on speaking despite some previous mistakes seemed to be very important.

In conclusion, I think it is always important to remember that different aspects are tested. So even though you might realize half way through the test that you did not respond to the task perfectly well, stay focused on your grammer and vocabs in order to achieve a good score (at least) within those components.
Also, the time shedule is really tight, so never look back to the previous questions unless you have some spare time in the end.
And eat as much as you can beforhand! Despite a big breakfast I was starving at the time of the writing part :)!

Good luck to everybody and thank you Liz for the awesome tips and the simple way of explaining them!
    Ines

I had downloaded a lot of books online for ielts, but didnt get time to go thru them much ! However, i found the ielts books available on Amazon Kindle Unlimited very useful. The books available there helped me a lot. And there were other offline books such as 6 practice tests from Tata Mc Graw Hill and The Complete Guide to IELTS from Cengage Learning, apart from the material from British Council. And i can never forget the contribution of your blog, particularly the practice questions for listening, speaking, writing ! they dispelled much of my anxiety. And the student community here – your contributions to ‘recent exam questions’ have helped me a lot as well. And yes, if one looks at the archives of september 2017, i have contributed towards my ‘recent exam questions’ as well !
Liz i wanted to know whether my score as 8.0 is good enough for academic institutions in UK and elsewhere?

    Writing- 7.0

  68. Hi Liz

I completed my test on 19 August and scored as follows:

    Speaking: 8.5
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 9

In my preparation, I watched many of your YouTube videos and went through many pages on this website. Yours were by far the most helpful IELTS tutorials that I could find. Thanks for everything!

    • Band 9 overall !!! Very well done to you 🙂 You must be over the moon 🙂 I’m very impressed with you getting band 9 in writing as that isn’t common at all. Thanks for sharing your results 🙂

  69. Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for hosting such a wonderful website & YouTube videos for IELTS students.

August 19 was my second attempt for IELTS and I scored the following:

    L = 8.5
    R = 8
    W = 6.5
    S = 8
    OVERALL = 8

I am very satisfied with all sections EXCEPT Writing. It was only because of writing that I attempted IELTS second time and results were unchanged, 6.5 earlier and 6.5 now. Though, I strongly believe that I did a much better job in writing section this time.

Any help or tips will be appreciated to move Writing scores UP. This really is causing a lot of delay in my immigration procedure.

    Best,
    Neelu

  70. Hi Liz,

First of all, Many thanks for such a helpful information and content.
I got my score today. This was my second attempt. In first attempt, I had studied on my own for a week and had given exam in hurry. I was not aware about your site.
In my first attempt, my score was –
    L=8
    R=7.5
    W=6.5
    S=7.0
    Overall = 7.5

I needed 7 in all. Hence I decided to attempt again. I came across your site this time. First, I went through all comments from students and then decided to go through each and every tip. I followed all your instructions as much as possible. And , result is very positive.
I saw required improvement in my score. My current score is –

    L=8.5
    R=9.00
    W=7.5
    S=7.00
    Overall=8.00

🙂 🙂 :-). Once again thanks a lot. I highly recommend everyone to follow your tips and tricks religiously.

    Hi Liz,

I am highly grateful to you. With your guidance I have scored 8 Bands overall in IELTS Academic I took on 19.08.2017 at Hyderabad in India. I am so overwhelmed.
    My Scores:
    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7

    OVERALL – 8

Total number of practice papers attempted – 20 in 15 days time.
I totally agree with you Liz that only Cambridge University Books on IELTS series (1-11) and official guide are good for this exam.

Writing – I evaluated my essays and reports by myself owing to the knowledge imparted by you and was honest in awarding even 4/5 bands to myself and it helped a lot. I sat with the common topics listed by you for almost 30 hours overall and made 20-25 pages notes as Essay Fodder. Cohesion part is tricky, one may miss it unknowingly so to be kept in mind.

Speaking – This cannot be nurtured in a short span so ” speak, speak and speak ” English. It is normal to be nervous on the test day so find a companion at the test center and talk for 5 – 10 minutes normally, believe me this will ease you : I am the practical example for this. With the examiner, speak full sentences only and go on speaking in the two minute Que Card Task till the examiner stops you but make sure that you have started concluding after 1.5 minutes. Try not to pause.

Listening and Reading – Purely depends on practice, exactly the way Liz recommends.

All those writing IELTS – Do not panic, PRACTICE, PRACTICE & PRACTICE .
And Liz , Biggest Thank you .

Hello, I’m from Malaysia and I took my IELTS (Academic Module) on the 12th of August, with my Speaking Test on the 11th. My results are as follows:

    Overall 8.5
    Listening 9.0
    Reading 9.0
    Writing 8.0
    Speaking 7.5

I was pretty nervous during my speaking test and ended up stammering a lot but managed to pull through (barely). As for writing, I ended up spending a few minutes more on task 1 than I should’ve, resulting in me rushing to finish my task 2 essay, though I did manage to finish my conclusion when the time was up. Could’ve done better for speaking and writing but I’m pretty satisfied overall and I got what I needed. 😀

Thank you so much Liz for all the resources you’ve provided on your website, especially your lessons and model essays for writing task 1. Also, thanks for the useful tips for each section, as they really helped me familiarize myself with the exam format and the techniques I had to use during the exam.

    Hi, everyone!
I am from the Philippines, bound for Australia. I took the Academic IELTS for the first time last August 12. Results were released exactly 13 days after. Upon checking online, my scores are:
    Listening – 9
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 8.5
    Overall – 8.5

I had about a month to prepare and I relied mostly on free practice tests online, including Liz’s. I focused on Listening as I felt this section was where I was weakest. Every day, I completed a Listening test until the day before my exam. I would even play sample audio files on speakers in the car during my work commute. I analyzed my errors and worked doubly hard on such task types. I was driven to get at least an 8 on this. (And I got a 9!)
For the other areas, I gave myself a schedule on when to do them (i.e., Writing on Mondays, Reading on Wednesdays, and Speaking on Fridays).
I would review after work hours. Having the discipline in doing practice tests really helped.
Thank you, Liz, for your detailed and organized work on IELTS. I am grateful I stumbled on your website. More power!

    Hi Liz,

I recently got my IELTS General Module results as:

    Listening 9.0
    Reading 9.0
    Writing 8.0
    Speaking 8.5
    Overall 8.5

Your tips really helped me overcome the fear of essay writing and I’m very happy with my W, and of course R and L scores.

I wish I had not stopped abruptly in the Section 2 of my Speaking test, as I ran out of content. I’m guessing that cost me 0.5 band, otherwise I could have scored a perfect 9.0 overall!

Nevertheless, I’m very happy with my score and can’t thank you enough 🙂

  76. Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for your wonderful IELTS lessons, ideas, and tips. Your website was very helpful in my exam preparation. I purchased all your advanced writing task 2 essays and they helped me to score the band 7 in writing. Thank you and highly appreciate your great help.

I was able to achieve the scores below in my exam held on July 29th at Cleveland, USA by studying from your website contents for over a month. Sorry about my delay in sharing my results with you.

    Overall: 8.5

Thank you and the other contributors here for sharing really valuable information. As most of my education has been in the English medium, I only spent about 5 days for practice. Your videos on YouTube were also of great benefit.

I was expecting a bit more from the listening module, as I had scored highly on this section during my practice sessions of the previous examination papers. I guess the reason for the average listening score is partly due to more questions being in the “multiple-choice” format, so I suggest to really focus on this section from previous exam papers.

Reading score was a pleasant surprise, I attribute it to my habit of reading newspapers, magazines etc, one suggestion I can give you all is to please do not repeat my mistake of writing your answers on the question paper, time is limited and crucial in reading module, I was struggling in the last demanding reading section. Write your answers in the answer sheet during this section !

Writing was okay, I am content with it as I can’t recall the last time I wrote an essay, but I highly suggest practicing beforehand if you are seeking anything above band 7.

Speaking result was also good, YouTube videos were instrumental, as they were informative as well as entertaining. My suggestion is to start off with a good impression, enjoy the conversation, manipulate and navigate the difficult topics with a good range of vocabulary. The introduction is generally easier and questions are straightforward, this is the best opportunity to appear confident.
I did struggle during the second task of the conversation as I had to converse about “the most polite person I knew”, a bit dry topic in my opinion and I doubt I fulfilled the task by talking at length for a complete two minutes, but during task three I made sure to use less common and a more complex vocabulary range correctly to counteract any negative performance. I highly suggest if you are in a similar situation and feel you have not performed well in prior tasks, remain confident and expand your answers in the latter sections to boost your overall speaking score.

    Good luck everybody!

    Hi Liz,

    I sat for the IELTS Academic exam on 3rd August. As for the provisional results I have obtained the following bands;
    Listening – 9
    Reading – 9
    Writing – 8.5
    Speaking – 8.5
    Overall Band – 9

I want to thank you for your regular and detail updates on this site. The content helped me during the preparation period, especially in Speaking. I just went through the exam updates by other people on this site to get an idea of the topics that may come. It was easier for me to answer articulately and with little fumble as I was anticipating most of the topics . Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

    • Overall Band Score 9 !! Very well done to you indeed!! Thanks for sharing your results with us all 🙂

  83. Hi Liz,

    Writing: 8.5

    Overall: 8.5

    Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for putting a lot of free material online so that I could greatly benefit from it. Seriously without your help and video, I could have had a half grade down in my IELTS result. My scores are as below:

    Overall 8
    Reading 9
    Listening 8
    Speaking 7.5
    Writing 7

For the Reading, one tricky question had particularly come to my attention. It was a classic question of which students are asked to match the content sentences with the paragraphs A to G. The number of sentences was the same with the paragraph’s. I spent quite a lot of time there as one of the paragraph contained two content sentences while one paragraph had none. I think it was quite struggling as people normally consider one answer for one paragraph. My advice would be if you have ever encountered this type of question, stay calm and make sure you read all the content sentence before moving on, rather than to match all sentences and paragraphs you understood and allocate the remaining answers blindly.

I’ve got to be honest Liz, I didn’t prepare at all for this test. Only a few days before I’ve read a lot (I mean A LOT) of valuable tips on your site, and honestly I was just hoping for a 6.0~6.5 score.

And to my surprise here are the results (AC – 29-07-17):
    Listening 8
    Reading 8.5
    Writing 7.5
    Speaking 7
    Overall 8

Your tips were really key for my good reading / listening scores. Thanks a lot!

    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 8
    Speaking: 8
    Overall: 8.5

Your tips on the speaking test was particularly useful. I was so nervous since I’ve not spoken to native speakers in such a long time and I barely prepared for the exam (unless you count playing dialogue-heavy games as preparation, that is). Once again, thanks!

  88. Dear Liz,

I just received my IELTS exam results. They are as follows:

    Listening: 8,5
    Reading: 8,0
    Writing: 8,5
    Speaking: 8,5

    Overall: 8,5

I have been speaking and practising english for quite some time and i already held the FCE, CAE and CPE certificates for both Cambridge and Michigan. But those were more than 15 years ago and english is not my mother tongue. I was quite worried about how i would do in the test especially in the writing section since i hadn’t written an essay in years (except maybe for some REALLY long e-mails).
I started doing some research online about the IELTS exam and your youtube videos and website popped up. I have to say, in all honesty, the material and lessons that you offer is exceptional. I followed your tips on every single section and every time i was about to panic, i would just think about your advice and, thankfully, all went well.
So i guess a BIG THANK YOU is due! And for every person reading this, i know you can’t trust strangers on the internet but every single advice Liz gives is spot on and will help you A LOT. Thank you again Liz!

    • P.S. i was taking the Academic Module

    • You’ve done exceptionally well – good for you 🙂 It sounds like you took on board all my tips and understood the techniques for tackling this test. You should be really proud of that score 🙂

    • Rammy says

hi nick! Congratulations! Impressed with your writing scores. May I know how did you do your preparations?

      • Hi Rammy,

Thank you for your kind words. As for preparations (i am assuming you refer to the writing task), i can’t say i did anything except for looking up tips on how the essay should be laid out in terms of paragraphs and structure overall. Language use is not something i practiced for the test as i have been speaking english for some time and the subjects vary so much you can’t really prepare on something. Plus, they are not there to test your knowledge on a subject but your use of the english language so i guess it will always be something general and that everyone should have an idea on what to write.

As far as the first task goes, i took a look at the examples provided here on Liz’s website and got a basic idea on what to look for in graphs and what to write in each paragraph. She has a youtube video explaining that very clearly.

For the second task, i just tried to practice using example subjects and tried to break down the writing by identifying the paragraphs and what each of them should contain so as to get acquainted with the whole procedure and kind of develop a habit because in the exam you don’t really have the luxury of time. Again, if you take a look on the writing section of the website, you can find some valuable information.

Based on my experience, i would recommend these tips: Write with a PENCIL. You can easily erase and rewrite anything wrong. Don’t count words. Practice on some test sheets and see how many words each line contains when you write. You then have a basic idea of the average count for each line so instead of counting words, you count the lines and then multiply. That will save you time. Leave a line between each paragraph so that it is more clear to see and it gives the essay a more “clean” look. Don’t be afraid to ask for a second piece of paper (for the second task). I found myself needing to write more and they gave me another piece of paper whereas the person sitting next to me decided to cram 3 lines at the end of the paper and got told that it won’t be considered. Not good. And remember to always go for MORE, not less, than what’s required just to be on the safe side. Not excessively more but just make sure.

I hope my answer is satisfying… if not, just drop a line 😉 Take care and, if you need to take the test, best of luck!

    (L, R, W, S) – 8, 9, 7, 7.5
    Overall Band – 8
I was able to improve my listening and reading scores by solving all your exercises and also by solving Cambridge General training 11 and the official Cambridge Guide. Also worked on exercises from ielts-simon.com site.
Improved my score from the first attempt which was
    (L, R, W, S) – 7.5, 6, 7, 8
    Overall Band – 7
Please continue to do what you are doing! You’re simply amazing at what you do and this has helped a lot of people like me.

    Hey Liz,

My earlier score for 24 th May exam..
    L-9
    R-7.5
    W-6
    S-8.5

Overall 8 from B C..Best part was the speaking..I was happy as I had an examiner who was very happy while taking my speaking exam…as a result got 8.5 in speaking. Despite the hardwork..could not get the much needed 7.0 in writing.

Reappeared for 24 june exam via Idp..
    L-8.5
    R-8.0
    W-7.5
    S-8.0

Overall 8.0 In my opinion I can deduce that IDP examiner for speaking looked more serious making a candidate nervous…hence my speaking score down to an 8.0. However I can ignore looking at my Writing score of 7.5 not a celebrating score but meets my requirement.. All thanks to you Liz…

    S- 7.5
    Overall – 8
This was my first attempt and your expert tips did help me a lot!! Although, I hoped for a perfect 9 in Listening and Reading, yet i am satisfied. For the speaking part, i was not at all satisfied as i thought i didn’t speak much and did not use much vocabulory. But, whatever I spoke, i did so fluently and used a couple of idioms as well and maybe 4 or 5 different synonyms. Also, i started speaking on the cue card topic using “I’d like to” and not I would like to. I remembered it as i saw it in your video.
I didn’t expect 7.5 to say the least. I am over the moon right now.

    Liz,

Thank you for helping hundreds of IELTS test-takers free of
    cost with this blog!

My Test Details – 24th June; United States; First Attempt

    I just received my score.

    Overall – 8.5
    Listening – 7.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 8.0
    Speaking – 9.0

I barely had 5 days to prepare. 70% of my preparation included
watching the videos on your blog, answering your sample questions, and going
through your tips! For the rest 30%, I printed some of the full-fledged tests and
sample answer sheets from the Cambridge IELTS books (downloaded from Google)
    and just practiced using those.

For anyone of you who has a very little time to prepare, I hope that the process I followed can help you lay out a basic schedule.

    Step -1 (Know the test)

    – Go through the test format.
    – Spend some time and understand the question patterns in each segment.
    – Keep in mind the time limit for every segment.
    – Do an initial sample test (download from IELTS official website) just to see where you stand.

    Step-2 (Prepare using Liz’s blog)

    – Go through every one of the 4 segments (L, R, W, S) in this blog, one after the other.
    – In each segment, read every tip and watch every video.
    – Make notes of the points that you would like to keep in mind.
    – Try and answer every sample question that Liz has laid out there. She has specified at least one sample question for every possible pattern that could appear on the test.
    – Look at the answers and compare with yours. Figure out what you got wrong and more importantly, “analyze why you got them wrong.” This helps you understand how you approached the question, and how you should have.

    Step-3 (Practice)

    – Download all the versions of Cambridge IELTS books (you can just google them out).
    – From these books, print out the full-fledged tests and sample answer sheets.
    – Take these tests using a clock and write your answers in the sample answer sheets.
    – Grade your tests and find out your weak areas.
    – Make notes of your analysis and try to keep it in mind during the following tests.

In addition, go through the comments in this blog and find out what the recent test takers said about their tests. Know about the tips that helped them, learn from their experiences and be prepared.

    Good Luck!

Liz – Thanks again for the effort you are putting in, to assist so many test-takers all over the world, each with their own questions and training needs. It must feel incredible to know that most of these people credit their success to you. Keep up the good work!

    Deeksha.

My prep time was spent in writing online practice tests and reviewing material from IELTS LIZ. It is crucial that everyone spends significant amount of time in practice tests as you can analyze the mistakes you make and try to rectify them. The exam goes exactly how its described by liz but the listening part was one section that made me surprised. The pace of the speaker in the exam was high compared to the pace of the speaker in the practice tests I wrote. The key is to practice as much as you can.

Ielts liz has all the information you need to attend the exam. As there is so much information here one advise that I would like to give is to write all the important points u see here in a notebook and read those important points before attending the exam. It really helps.

Liz – Thank you so much for taking the effort to create this page. If not for this website, it would have been difficult for me to get the score I received.

I need to take another test again and will definitely just focus on your blog because your blog and youtube videos greatly helped me especially with my writing. Getting a 7 in writing is already an achievement. I really hope to get a 7 or higher in all sections on my second take. Thank you for helping people achieve their dreams in life, Liz. Hello Liz,

    Test: Academic
    Location: Perth, Australia

My results are as follows (this is my 2nd attempt):
    Overall: 8
    L: 8.5

R: 7 (Passage 3 was tough: about how literary work is affected by sociological factors of its writer (I think!). I struggled through it even though I had at least 30min to plough through it), changed my mind a million times over the matching section of names/groups of people and their ideas/opinions. It was madness!

W: 8 (I still can’t believe it!!! I thought my task 1 report was quite rubbish; I abandoned it after 25 min and went on to Task 2, which I made sure I had all the different parts – intro/3 body paragraphs/conclusion- covered. Did I showcase my repertoire of vocabulary? I honestly don’t know. I couldn’t stop writing to review my sentences. I was frantically trying to finish my essay on space tourism (not an easy topic for me… ugh!). But I must say that I bought your video lesson for the opinion essay and my writing score jumped from 6.5 to 8! Thank YOU!!!

S: 7.5 (Sooooo frustrating to have missed by half a band, as I need an 8, do you think I should consider a reevaluation? Is the 0.5 difference a lot in terms of what is expected from the candidate? I rather not take the test yet again.

Really grateful for your invaluable tips/lessons/advice.

Overall i found the exam quite difficult , maybe cuz i was not mentally energized due to lack of sleep. I missed out some important listening infrmation, also reading passage 3 i was running out of time and could not figure the headings of the passages. I did panic but eventually was able to go through it. Writing was okayish, and very similar to some of the topics here. Speaking was great as you can see from my band. Dear Ms Liz,

I took my reading/listening/writing exam on 3rd of June, and speaking on 2nd of June
I was panicking the week prior as I needed help with the speaking and writing sections (task 1)
I stumbled upon your website, and studied everything regarding task one, as well as took your advice and prepared extra topics that usually come in the speaking exam.
I want to say that I cannot be more grateful, as your advice saved me, seriously!
I was really worried because I panicked when the reading section started, and couldn’t think clearly, and thought I really messed it up. However, I was able to get all the scores that I needed.
    My overall score is: 8
    Reading: 7
    Listening: 9
    Writing: 7.5
    Speaking: 8

Thank you so much for having this material available online. You’re helping people everywhere, and anytime of the day. I cannot thank you enough!!!

    Hello Liz ma’am,

I appeared for the IELTS exam on 13th May and below are my test scores.

    Listening – 8.5
    Reading – 8.5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7.5

The material posted on this website helped me a lot. I also made use of the Cambridge university IELTS book 9 as suggested by you for Practice.

I have a question, when and how will I get my scorecard?

My result was withheld for 13 days stating they are rechecking the result. Can you pl comment what could be the actual reason for the delay?

  126. Nisha says

I got my results of 13th May and these are my scores:

    W 7.5
    S 7.5

Liz, am extremely thankful to you for your videos. I have gone through all the essays and various tips that you have provided and really consider them valuable.Especially the videos for reading strategies were very helpful.
This was my 3rd attempt and by god’s grace I was successful.
Thank you Liz for the good spirits you have delivered and keep up the good work.

    Hi Liz,

I wrote my IELTS test on the 13th of May, however my result was withheld for investigation and has just been released.

    Overall 8.5
    Listening 8.0
    Reading 8.0
    Writing 8.0
    Speaking 9.0

I studied only your resources- both on Youtube and on the website for about two weeks and apparently were more than enough to get great scores. I have recommended you to friends and family looking to take the test in coming weeks.

    Many thanks again.

  128. Rana says

    Hi Liz,
I took IELTS on 13th May in Fujairah, UAE. The result was withheld on 28th May and announced just now. I got what I wanted; 7 each in GT for immigration purposes.
    L: 8.5
    R: 8.5
    W: 7.0
    S: 7.0
    Overall: 8.0

Although I’m content with the results. But as I like writing on my online blog (English short poems), I was bit astonished to see just 7 in writing as I consider it be my strong area. Maybe they deducted some score in quality review.

I would definitely recommend your blog to all my friends for IELTS preparation. You are really doing an astounding job through this blog. I did not do much effort to prepare until I came across this blog. It really helped to fill the gaps of my scattershot approach and to make it more solid.

For writing, I wanna share that, in first 20 minutes I really did nothing just outlining the main ideas to write about. Then in next 20 minutes I did the first part which I think went really nice. The issue was i got stuck with the second part as the remaining time left was just 20 minutes.

So my tip is to attempt the second part first as it carry more marks.
    Thanks again Liz.

  129. Sholape says

    Thanks Liz,
Just a feedback for future references. I asked you some weeks ago about what would happen if i mixed my writing task 1 and 2 up i.e. i wrote task 1 on task 2 paper and vice versa. My result just came out and i had 7 in the writing test. I guess the examiners were considerate.
    My result goes thus

    Reading 8.5
    Speaking 8.5
    Listening 8.0
    Writing 7.0

    Thanks liz

    Hi Liz
My IELTS result : Overall 8 , L-8,R-8,S-7.5,W-7.5 . I had attempted IELTS previously where I gained 6.5 in writing , all other modules above 7. This time I followed your website and learned all writing techniques and saw all your writing videos on YouTube. That’s the reason I got 7.5 in writing. Thank to you. My advice for other people follow IELTS Liz and forget about other sites. You will do good in the test.

    • That’s great to go from 6.5 to 7.5 in writing !!! Well done to you 🙂 I’m really glad my videos helped 🙂

  138. Hello, I would like to express gratitude for your site, you’re doing an amazing job. Specially for the writing module, it really helped observing your mock essays. I scored an overall 8 band score.
    Listening 8.5
    Reading 9
    Writing and speaking 7.5
When I used to practice mock tests, I never achieved full marks in reading but the actual exam I found easy 🙂 My husband has been a great help too! He supported me throughout and shared some best tips for reading
Even if you’re attempting GT exam, academic passages are better as you’re prepared for tougher questions.
For matching headings, circle the keywords and find the most appropriate heading accordingly.
And most crucial is understanding the synonyms and looking out for IELTS traps.
For example, there were 5 posters and the question was regarding creative writing.
One poster had creative talents and the other was about prose and poetry. So the keyword is not the most important here, the meaning is.
Also I’m an avid reader, I completed reading test in 40 minutes and had another 20 minutes for rechecking. Reading quickly is very helpful so best advise is getting accustomed to reading.

GT exam, given on 29th April in Hyderabad,India.

Thank you for your help! 🙂

    Hi Liz,

Thanks a lot for this website. It helped me improve my score. This was my third attempt (I was getting low score in listening and writing), and this time I got my target score. I have purchased all your advanced writing videos and they are WORTH IT. For listening part, I practiced with Cambridge IELTS tests. I gave 20 practice tests (Yes 20.. One each day) , and it helped me improve my listening score from 6.5 to 8.0.

Thanks again for your dedication and hard work 🙂

I’m so ecstatic to post this. I postponed doing my IELTS several times because I was afraid that I wouldn’t meet the cut-off band score. Eventually, I summoned up courage to write it and your YouTube video was one of the first that I stumbled on and passively watched.
Although, I knew that I won’t have any challenge with reading and listening but writing and most especially speaking was my problem.
During the speaking test, the examiner asked several questions and I felt I used very simple terminologies to respond. My task 2 answer was quite boring and I repeated my words severally. In short I thought I’d score like 5.5/6.

    Alas! Result came out and I had L8.5, R8.0, W8.0, S7.5 Band 8!
I’m so glad and thankful to you Liz for all your tips which were of immense help.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the resources you provided on this site. I started my prep very late and stumbled across your website very late (4 days before exam). I must admit that my scores would have been impossible to achieve without this website.

  142. Aušrinė says

Hello! So I received my results and I couldn’t be happier!
    Listening – 8,5
    Reading – 8,5
    Writing – 7
    Speaking – 7
    Overall: 8 !!!

I was terrified after the speaking part since it didn’t go as well as I expected: I was asked to talk about my favourite type of weather (part two), I ran out of ideas quickly and I was not able to plan my time efficiently since I could not see the time tracker. There was a period of silence. Yep. But I think what saved me was that I did not panic and just did my best during part 3. I was also being frequently interrupted. But I suppose it needs to be done in order to cover all of the questions.

Just don’t let yourself get too anxious and terrified, one mistake does not necessarily have to cause a chain reaction!

And thank you, Liz. Your videos are not only educational but quite interesting and calming to watch – which was an amazing discovery for scattered person like me!

I gave IELTS General Test in Mumbai on 29th April. It was my second attempt. My result is as under:

    L: 9
    R: 9
    S: 7
    W: 6.5
    Overall Band Score: 8
    1st attempt I scored, L: 8, R: 8.5, S: 7.5, W: 6.5, Overall Band Score: 7.

Even though my overall band score imroved by 0.5, I have same CEFR Level i.e. C1. I am giving the General test for Canada Immigration. So unless I score more 0.5 in writing, it doesn’t help me 🙁

Giving the IELTS again on 25th May. I have the following points:

    1. In my second attempt, by watching your videos I became aware of the structure.
    2. However, the topic of the essay is so general, it’s really hard to come up with 250 words.
    3. I was about to conculde th essay in the test, when I realised I am short of words. I added another body paragraph. But, not sure if I still make it to 250 words.

So, I know where I go wrong. I want to practice on writing answersheet sample now. So vaguely I have the idea how 250 words look like. But, I am not getting to it.

    Hello Liz ,

I am one out of millions “IELTS Liz” aficionado, so to speak :). I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to you for being a Ray of Hope in the lives of all students and aspirants who strive to achieve their goals , but are directionless in the midst of range of IELTS preparation materials. Some websites are luring candidates under False pretence that they can achieve the desired bands , had they to purchase the study materials provided by them. I’d like to be an eye opener TO ALL who follow this website , that MEANDRE NO MORE ! 🙂 the link to the study materials given by Liz Mam and her videos are sufficient for those aiming to improvise. Personally, I always made sure to go through your model essays and Speaking tips before my exams, as they were always handy 🙂 .
Your True/ False/NG lessons were truly an eye opener. Yes, I have personally been through tough times and almost thought of giving up on attempting IELTS. But as they say “try and try till you succeed”, and not blindly but with practice 🙂 as it does make man perfect! I’d always recommend this website to my peers and there are many people who in this country religiously follow you. But Liz Mam, I you simply are the best.

  151. Dear Liz,

I cannot express my gratitude in words. Thanks to your videos and paid writing sessions… I scored 8.5 overall band

I appeared for the test in Hyderabad, India.

    Here are the scores:
Listening: 8.5 (all your video techniques helped a lot)

Reading: 9.0 (all your tips esp. on true and false really pushed my band score to the maximum and your last assignment on Monarch Butterflies was really what pushed me to read the questions a second time)

Speaking: 9.0 (so many tips from your video. I cannot thank you enough. My toughest test – yet thanks to you I scored the maximum)

Writing: 7.5 (I unfortunately panicked in this section and made a lot of silly mistakes. Still, I guess your videos, including the paid sessions, were so good that I still scrambled to get a 7.5. I know 2 examiners would have checked it after I scored high in other sections, but I knew they wouldn’t pardon so many silly mistakes)

    Hello Liz
Congratulations for your site that is wonderful.
I discovered it just 2 weeks before my Academic Ielts Test 2 months ago and I didnt have enough time to see all the lessons.
    I got S 7 R 7 W 6.5 L 6.5 but I need individual scores 7 .
How can you help me, please
    Thanks
    Andrade

    • Liz says

Usually when a student gets scores between 6.5 and 7, there are two reasons. Firstly, because they still haven’t quite developed the right techniques and need to review their understanding of the test. The other reason is their level of English. If your level of English isn’t quite band 7, then hitting that score isn’t certain. So, my advice to you is to check your techniques and understanding of IELTS and also aim for accuracy in your writing. Too many students are trying to impress the examiner and use an unnatural style in their essay. Just write clearly and present ideas logically. Make the meaning your priority. If you want advanced writing task 2 lessons, see my online store: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/. Even one lesson will show you if you are using the right techniques. Good luck!

    Dear Liz,
Your blog is a great help. I did not take any coaching or bought any book, in fact, I relied majorly on your videos and samples. I also referred to some other sites, just to check consistency of information. And I say with utmost certainty that your site is the best of all. The accuracy of information and simple teaching methodology, fine tips, details, remains unmatched.
I want to highlight that I did not give much time for preparation due to my work schedule but I had downloaded your videos and listened to them whenever I found time.
I did not practice speaking and Writing Task 2 at all. But did go through the topics and gathered thoughts on it in my mind and held conversations. I did practice Writing 1 on few topics. I also want to share the two mistakes I made in the paper.
    1. Listening – I wrote .80 when the audio said .8
    2. Writing 1- I used a word that changed the meaning of the table. I used the word enrolled wherein the table showed data of graduate students.
My Scores for IELTS Academic are as below-
    Writing & Reading- 7
    Listening- 7.5
    Speaking – 8.5
I will be taking IELTS again as I need an 8 in Listening & speaking.
I am sharing your site with many of my students and colleagues. 🙂
Please see if you can have Full practice audios for Listening section as well.

    Thank You,
    Shilpa Sengar

    • Usually the reason students get the same score again and again is because it is their level of English. If your level of English is band score 5, then you will get band score 5. The best way to increase your score is to continue studying English. My website is for IELTS skills, I think you need extra English lessons first and foremost.

    L-8.5
    R-7.5
    W-7.0
    S-7.5
Your the best teacher ever! God bless!

With the help of IELTS LIZ and all her students’ feedback re recent questions, and lots of practice using Liz’s advanced lessons and I followed her last minute tips to the letter. – I achieved the score I desperately needed to qualify for a scholarship as well as entry into an early childhood degree, as it was conditional on achieving a bandscore of 7 in all 4 sections on my first attempt. Thankfully I managed to exceed that with an overall of 8. I cannot tell you how stoked I am!
S – 9 (and I hit a blank re my favorite song, so I improvised big time)
    L – 8.5
    R – 7
W – 7 (this area was my weakest, but the advanced lesson videos were of immense value….worth every penny!)

    • Great news!! You bet you are celebrating! Very done with both your results and getting the scholarship you needed 🙂 I’m really pleased my work was helpful 🙂

It was really hard to get more than 7 in all the module. Earlier I never had 7 in writing but this time I not only have 7 in writing but 8 and more in other modules too.
Thanks again. Your website is one of the reason I would be able to work and live in the UK. 🙂

    Speaking: 8.0
    Overall score: 8.0
I am so glad and I owe all thanks to God for making this possible. Thank you Liz for your website. I have written IELTS before in 2015 in Nigeria. I didn’t use your website then. My results were:
    L 8.5, R 8.5, W 7, S 6.5
The results were suitable for my masters application then but now i need it for registration as a medic and I need 7 in each band so I had to retake the exam. I am so happy with my results. I studied your speaking classes diligently and studied all the writing models you have and you can see how much improvement I had on speaking and writing which were my lowest the first time. Liz, thank you so so so much. Keep this site going. Its helping people all over the world. Thanks again Liz!

I highly recommend to every IELST taker to work with your website and your Youtube videos. This is an invaluable source of informations.

My husband also prepared the test with your free materials and got good results as well. We can now confidently apply to immigrate to Canada !

    Hello Liz,

I am happy to inform you that I scored 8.5, 8, 7 & 8.5 in the LRWS tests (overall 8.0) that I appeared for 2 week ago.

My previous score (from Jan tests) was 8.5, 9, 6.5 & 8.5 (overall 8.0) in LRWS, respectively. Revaluation for the writing result didn’t help to gain 0.5 to reach 7 (minimal requirement for Canadian PR requirement). The cost of this 0.5 band was very high in terms of time, energy and money.

Subscribing to your advanced IELTS writing videos certainly helped this time and I am sure I would’ve scored much better in writing with more practice. I highly recommend the fellow students to subscribe to your advanced IELTS writing videos as writing has most trickiest assessment.

    Thank you very much.

You are doing a fab job and I will continue to recommend more and more people to your site for guidance. Thanks a ton once again. Keep rocking like this!

    Hi Liz,

I have a concern. I received sms for the result of my exam but it seems a bit off. Firstly, the candidate number is wrong (I’m candidate number 4 but it shows 413). Next, the collection center is far from where I live (It says I should collect it in Fujairah but I live in Dubai), third, all my results are band score 5! I’m pretty sure I did better than 5. I did a Computer-Based ielts, do you think this is an error? It’s holiday here in Dubai for 3 days and I can’t contact them for confirmation. My result is not even appearing online.

    What can you say?

    Thank you very much.

Much thanks to you and your website for helping me prepare for the test and for also providing brilliant tips on how to enhance my score especially in the writing and speaking sections of the test.

Also, your advice on the types of questions that appear in the Reading section helped me understand what to expect when different questions are asked and how to answer them.

  208. Hi Liz.

Thank you so much for all the content on your site.
I wrote IELTS at first in Dec 2016 and had S 8, L 8, W 7.5, R 6.5 with very minimal preparation. The result seem okay but I wanted to do better with a minimum of 7 on all modules to aid my overall scores for my intended application. I came across your site and I can testify to how useful the resources have been for me. Prepared constantly for 2 weeks using your content only for my second attempt on March 25 in Nigeria (General Training Module)
    Speaking- 8
    Listening- 8
    Writing- 7.0
    Reading- 7.5
Overall band score of 7.5 which gave me additional 42 scores for my application.

I achieved my aim this time(especially the Reading module) and am so glad I came across your website.
    Thank you once again Liz.
    Cheers.

  211. Hello Liz

My results for the March 25, 2017 test (academic) were:
    L:9.0, R:9.0, W:7.0, S:8.5 Overall:8.5

This is a slight improvement over my February results (general) of:
    L:9.0, R:9.0, W:6.5, S:8.5 Overall:8.5

I took the test in Australia.

My purpose for taking the exams was to see if I can become an IELTS coach. The writing score was a bit disappointing but I always knew I had problem with grammar and spelling, especially under time pressure.

I started preparing 2 weeks before the test. Your tip to practise writing on actual test paper was most helpful. I learnt what 150 words and 250 words of my handwriting look like. For all those who are struggling with their writing, I suggest you practise under test environment (paper, pencils and eraser) to help you cope with the stressful conditions.

Before my most recent exam, I read through the past exam questions section in your forum. My speaking question was exactly the same as that posted by a few students. I was mentally prepared, but it didn’t improve my speaking score.

  212. Gaurav says

    Hi Liz,
I cannot thank you enough for the noble work you are doing in helping so many students fulfill their dreams. I have lived in US for 10 yrs and have a PHD with some some publications. However, I am trying to immigrate to Canada and hence I was writing this exam. I am currently working full time so had no time to prepare. I was not sure what to expect and how to prepare for the exam. I was looking for books online and in one of the review box of a Barrons book on IELTS somebody had commented that reviewing your videos will be a much better alternative than that book. I went to Youtube to find you and never turned back to finish ordering that book. I appeared for General test on March 25 and I scored LRWS as 8.5,8.5,8.5, and 8. My ego is little hurt by not getting 9 in reading as I thought I had all answers correct, but my score serves the purpose. Your tips on paraphrasing and videos on True, False, Not given were the best and most helpful. I would like to send you a thank you gift if you can reply (may be by email) with a mailing address of your office or p.o. box or something. I hope you keep doing this wonderful service.

  213. You did very well. It’s a great score and if it is enough for your future, it’s a perfect score 🙂 Thanks for recommending my site 🙂

Happy to share my results with you. I took my General test on 25th March and results declared today.

    L – 7, R – 6.5, W – 7.5, S – 8 Overall – 7.5

Thank you very much for all the helpful videos and tutorials and minute details with respect to the exam. There are many videos on the net but your site is just perfect, what more can one ask for? I just prepared in a weeks time on and off as its difficult to concentrate with work and kids around. I was confident I will score 7+ in all, but reading let me down. I was expecting atleast a 7 in reading. Nevermind.

You are doing a great job. Will recommend your site over any other. Its the best to go thru your videos and guidance rather wasting time elsewhere. My 8 year old always used to say, how come this aunty is always smiling. Keep smiling always, which gets a smile on the one who watches your videos. It actually relaxes the person who is tensed about the preparation.

All the best to you. Hope to meet you some day.

Hello, Liz. I just got my results. I took the Academic module on the 25th of March in Bucharest, Romania. The results are as follows:
    L: 7.5
    R: 8
    W: 7.5
    S: 8
    Overall: 8

When I was practicing at home it never happened to me to score below 8 in Listening. Make sure you don’t lose focus during your exam! Unfortunately I got carried away and I missed like 5 blank spaces in a row.
The reading was a bit hard, but I am satisfied with my result. Practice using tests and spend no more than 50 minutes/3 sections. You need the extra 10 minutes to copy your answers to the answer sheet during the exam.
For the writing part: Liz’s videos(especially the advanced lessons) are a blessing!!

Thank you so much for everything, Liz!! Your website is just great!!

Hi Liz! Just wanted to say thanks for your videos and website, they were a great help in preparing for the ielts. My scores were listening 9.0, reading 8.0, writing 7.0, speaking 9.0, overall 8.5 on my first try!!

Considering how I started preparing only a couple of days before the test, my results are a pleasant surprise. I will most likely be retaking the test to try bump up my writing score, hopefully to a band 8.0.

Thanks again for the wonderful tips and tutorials! 🙂

    Hi Liz,

I didn’t have much time to prepare the test, so your tips helped me a lot! I examined the 18th of March and I’ve just received the results.

I needed an overall score of 6.5 so I’m really satisfied with the results; even more taking into account that I wasn’t quite happy with the writings and speaking that I did.

    Listening: 9.0
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 7.0
    Speaking: 7.0

    OVERALL: 8.0

    Thanks again!

  225. Dear Liz,

I am extremely thankful for your valuable tips, vedios and practice lessons. I did lot of practice from your blog and it helped me a lot. I also recommend your site to whoever asks me. I am extremely happy and thankful as this was my first attempt. I got my academic IELTS results:

    Writing: 7
    Reading: 7
    Listening: 7.5
    Speaking: 7

    Thankfully

  226. I’m really pleased to hear your results!! WEll done 🙂 Good luck with any future tests. The key will be focusing on speaking and writing.

  227. You’ve got great results!! Your writing score is slightly lower but getting band 7 in writing is great. Not many students manage that. You should be proud of your results 🙂 Well done!

    Hi Liz,
    I took the IELTS on March 4th and I got the following scores: Overall : 8 / Listening 8.5 / Reading 8.5 / Writing 7 / Speaking 7.5. I reached all the scores I needed !
I would like to thank you because I reached those scores with the help of your blog ! All your tips, lessons, videos, and exercises are so useful ! I was well prepared thanks to you.

My tips would be the following, on the day of the exam :
    1. Read carefully the instructions. With the stress of the exam, if you go too fast you might get the question wrong (e.g., I almost forgot to compare and contrast data for writing part 1, even though there were clear instructions to do so – I went too fast).
    2. Don’t get stuck too long over one question that you don’t understand/know the answer for the reading and listening tests. You will loose time for the other questions, and that means that you’ll most probably get more than 1 question wrong.
    3. In the listening test, go quickly over all the questions of the section that you will hear next. You don’t have that much time before the new section starts, and it is important to have at least an overview of all the questions, rather than just reading thoroughly the 2 first questions of the section. Otherwise, you might get lost in the listening.
    4. For the writing test, practice in advance with a pen and a pencil to know which one you prefer. On the day of the exam, it is important to be able to write quite quickly and to have a readable handwriting.
    4. If you need to go to the bathroom, do it before you enter the room. You will be able to go during the test, but you will loose time and time is precious for this test.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks again Liz
    All my best

Dear Liz, my scores for 4th March IELTS GT, Islamabad Pakistan.
    Listening 7.0
    Reading 9.0
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 7.0. Overall 7.5

This was my 4th attempt at GT in the last 18 months. I am dissappointed. My last TRF (October 2016) was

    Listening 8.0
    Reading 7.0
    Speaking 7.5
    Writing 6.5

My TRF for June 2016 GT was:

    Listening 6.5
    Reading 7.0
    Writing 7.0
    Speaking 7.0

I dont know what to do now. IELTS GT is tougher than academic from my experience. I am a University of London graduate (Masters).

    Disappointed.

    • I will advice you go for reevaluation of the writing module. IELTS should push it up to 7. Well done dearie.

    Hello Liz,

    I’m Jay from Manila, Philippines.

I took my academic exam last March 4, 2017. Here are my scores:

    Listening: 7.5
    Reading: 8.0
    Writing: 7.0
    Speaking: 7.5

I can’t thank you enough for the useful tips and for the valuable information you have on your website. I can now push through with the next step in my professional registration in the UK.

  231. Great score!! Well done! I’m pleased my video lessons helped 🙂

  232. Hi Liz,

This was my first attempt. I am from India.

    This was my score:

    Reading 9
    Speaking 9
    Writing 8
    Listening 8.5

My total was 34.5 and yet I got an overall band score of just 8.5 while my husband, whose total was 30.5, got an overall band score of 8. How does this add up? I was really hoping for a 9 and then becoming an IELTS trainer myself.

This was not what I had expected 🙁

    Disapppointed,

    Mifrah

    • Let me first say, well done!! You’ve got a great score. Your overall points work out at 8.5 but your husbands doesn’t add up. Strange. You are close to hitting band 9. If you could just push your writing score up it would be fine. Writing is not easy due to the techniques required. Let me know what you plan to do next 🙂

  233. Thanks Liz and all contributors for the tips and materials. I just got my results for the IELTS test of March 4th. General Training module. Lagos, Nigeria. 1st try.
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 9.0
    Writing: 7.5
    Speaking: 7.5

I just had to come back and say thank you to you for the great work you are doing on your blog. God bless you!

I had taken IELTS previously but had a 6.0 in Writing and I needed a minimum of 7.0. A friend suggested your blog to me and it was beyond helpful. I sat for the academic test on the 4th of March. My overall score was 8.0
    Writing- 7.0
    Speaking- 8.0
    Reading- 8.0
    Listening- 9.0
    Thank you!

    For anyone preparing:
Follow Liz’s pointers, tips and rules for each component, they are invaluable. Also, try to practice reading and listening components using Cambridge IELTS books while making sure you keep the timer on. I wish you all success!

    W: 7.5
    S: 7.5

Hmm. Liz that’s a very good compliment. Now I need to dig down on your reading strategies as I’m not doing good at reading apart from Writing.

  236. Dear Liz

Thank you very much for your great blog, which I found very helpful while preparing for the test. My scores are as follows:

    L:8.5
    R:8.5
    W:6.5
    S:7.5
    Overall:8

Although my prospective university accepts these scores, I am rather shocked by my writting score. I am not sure about the number of words (I did not count them), but I was expecting at least a whole mark higher. I am considering asking for a remark and I am wondering if the university will still receive my current results.

    Hello Maam,
Thank You so much. This website is a goldmine for people like me. You are generous with feedback, giving support and sharing tips. I gained immensely from your lessons, recent questions section and exam day tips.

IELTS Academic on Feb 18 (New Delhi, India)
    Overall: 8.5
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 7
    Speaking: 8
I wish I had practised enough writing to get better band score in writing. I did not have anyone to practice speaking with so I recorded speaking on webcam and then reviewed it. Also, I kept on thinking about speaking topics and practised even when doing house chores/ driving/walking (am sure some people on road thought am lunatic, but I had to use whatever free time I had)
For listening and reading I implemented strategies from your video lessons and took all 8 tests in Cambridge IELTS book+ your website lessons+ British council Road to IELTS. Also, I made sure to use IELTS answer sheet and a pencil during practice.
    Thanks again.

I needed an overall 6.5 and 5.5 in all parts for my master degree application. After the exam I felt good about all the parts except writing because I could not even finish part 1 entirely. I would like to thank you, because without your page I would not be able to achieve this high score. I also purchased your advanced videos to contribute a little.

Thanks again! Keep up the good work!

Hi Liz! I am so grateful to you for you have helped me tremendously! I can’t thank you enough 🙂

This was my second time resitting for the test because I had to score at least a 7 for each component. I only got a 6.5 in writing the first time because I was not familiar with the topics, but I went through almost each of the questions in your 100 common writing task 2 list for almost three weeks (whew!). I wrote my ideas about them and even googled topics that I had no inkling what to write about.

Using your tips and materials, I was able to do well on both my writing tasks and my speaking. Once again, thank you Liz! You’re an amazing teacher.

I took my exams on 16th feb 2017 and got my results
    reading and listening – 7.5
    writing – 6.5
    speaking – 8.5

I needed 7 in each band. I was confident abt listening, reading and writing part to get good score after my exams as I did well. I am very disappointed to get only 6.5 in writing. I know the essay and had already practised it. will remarking help increase band by 0.5?? I had a feeling if my reading , listening, writing paper got misplaced… I expected more in these modules. Feeling terribly depressed and am scared to retake the exam. what if I get less than 7 in any other module in the second sitting??

Looking forward to hear from you Liz.

    Hi guys,
I took my IELTS (academic) test on the 14th of January. I thought the test was going to be as easy as TOEFL , but it was a bit trickier than that. I watched a few of Liz’s videos on Youtube for three days to get a good idea about the format of the test. Thanks, Liz!

I wanted to know if a good score helps with the immigration process for Canada, or is a minimum score all they look at for such purposes. I also understand I have to take the General Training version of the test for immigration purposes. Please let me know if a good score matters in the points system for Canadian immigration. Thank you and good luck!

Well done getting band score 9 !!! What a great achievement! 🙂

Contact the immigration department and ask them. But I think on the whole, they usually just go for hitting the target score. Lets hope they make an exception for you! 🙂

  253. Hey Liz,

  256. Dear Liz, I wanna share my before/after experience with your website:

My first exam was in September. I prepared for only 3 days as I wasn’t taking it seriously so I only watched random youtube videos and solved some listening exams. My results were:

    L: 7.5, R: 7.5, W: 6, S: 7.5 Overall: 7

Shocked by these results, I’ve set my mind to prepare for a whole month now while a quick google search led me to your website. I was so motivated by the positive feedback from test takers in this website and I’ve decided to study using only the lessons provided here.

I couldn’t sleep the night before the speaking test day because of some college work and I showed up an hour late for the test. By the time they finally decided to let me in I was so stressed, confused and sleep deprived. I spoke very fast and answered naturally without trying to impress the examiner because I was so exhausted.
Nevertheless, my results this time came out exactly as I wished them to be:

    L: 9, R: 8.5, W: 7, S: 8 .Overall: 8

So thank you a zillion. You have no idea how much each single topic/video/comment here had helped us reaching our final score.

Finally, I wrote down some of the speaking/writing questions that I managed to remember from my second exam and I’d like to post them here for others. Is there a post for that?

  257. I did the IELTS on 03rd of September and my marks were…
    Reading -9, Listening – 9, Speaking – 7.5, Writing -7.5 , Overall – 8.5.
Liz, thank you very very much. Your website helped me a lot to get those marks. I never studied under a tutor. I followed most of your videos and exercises and only read the IELTS 9 issued (issued after registering for the IELTS) by the British Council as a book. Your video tutorials were excellent. They were well prepared and gave me inspiration in addition to all the factual knowledge. In the field of IELTS teaching you are a real “A class” player. I cannot think of a better way to describe you. Providing such valuable study material free of charge in today’s world is really remarkable of you Liz.
Now I will share some of the experiences I had. I had difficulties in doing the writing task 1 than the 2. Actually I could not do much practice on task 1 and I haven’t studied mathematics/physics sort of subjects in English. However I was ok with the task 2. I suppose it was because I have written essay type answers in academic studies and also while studying the English language. So my strategy was to , 1)Spend 10 minutes and write a introduction for task 1, 2)Complete task 2 using 35 minutes and 3) complete task 1 in the last 15 minutes. Initially my plan went well but it took me a bit more than 35 minutes to complete the task 2 and I went short of time on task 1. Finally I could not proof read task 1. So my advice is, be well prepared for task 1 or otherwise you won’t be able to finish it in a decent time (approx. 20 minutes).
Once again , a big thank you to Liz. I am so much in debt to you. I wish you all the best in your future activities.

  258. Dear Liz,

    Greetings from Pakistan!

I received my IELTS test results today:
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 8.5
    Writing: 7.5
    Speaking: 8
    Overall: 8.5

Please take a bow for all the helpul tips and tricks you gave me through your website and youtube videos. Because of your virtual guidance, I was able to prepare for my IELTS test within a week.

For those who are about to take their test, allow me to give a few suggestions:

Speaking: Utilize your 1-minute time for task 2 (descriptive answer) to jot down whatever ideas and vocabulary come to your mind relating to your topic. This helped me improve a lot. Otherwise I had to pause and think for the next sentence.

Listening: Anticipate the answers. Also, read the question/ sentence carefully, sometimes they can trick you with articles or prepositions. You have to find the correct word that matches with the preposition or the article.

Reading: It helped me to read the qestions first. This way I can look for the answers as I read the passage and underline the required information. Like if you need to fill years in the queastions, you can focus on years first.

    Thank you again Liz!

    Best of Luck everyone!

I had only 4 days to prepare for the exam and I am quite pleased with the results, a major portion of which I owe to your website and your selfless work that has not only assisted me, but also innumerable people across the globe. Thank you for your invaluable test tips and advise. God bless thee.

  266. Hello Liz,

I have already posted my experience and questions on the other page. My results were delayed for quality check and analysis. I had appeared on July 16, 2016 and the result was supposed to come on July 29 but it was released today, August 10. Below are my results:
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 8
    Speaking: 9

I had referred Barron’s and your website for my practice. I Just wanted to thank you for your efforts.

    • OVERALL BAND 9 !! Fantastic! You should be very proud of these results. It really is an inspiration to all students that top scores are possible. I’m pleased to hear that my website was useful to you. I wish you all the very best with your future plans 🙂
      Liz

    • Hello Ancy! Congratulations!!! Your results are absolutely fantastic!!! I need score 7,5 in each part of the test. Will you please share your experience in preparation for writing task 2.
      With gratitude,
      Alena.

I took the test on 21/5/16 in Austria: I did study for the test for 1 week (including 4 practice tests), however I did not practice speaking or writing. This was the first time I took the IELTS test:
    Here are my results:
    L: 8.5
    R: 8.0
    W: 7.0
    S:7.5
    overall score: 8.0

Just a question, do IELTS ever gives you feedback on what you did right or wrong?

    • Well done! A great score for your first time 🙂 Unfortunately, you don’t get any feedback. It’s such a shame because it means that students can’t identify their weaknesses or mistakes.

  268. Hey I got my resuts

  269. Dear Liz,

    I’ve just received my results:
    Speaking: 9
    Listening: 9
    Reading: 9
    Writing: 8
    Overall: 9

I’d would like to thank you for all the work and effort you put into this website. Your tips and explanations have definitely helped me achieve this score.

The one thing I would like to mention (which might be of help to others) is regarding timekeeping during the test. I was aware I wouldn’t be able to wear a watch during the exam, but was certain there would be a clock in the classroom. Unfortunately, there was none. We were told the time by the staff at 20′, 40′, 55′ and 59′ – if I’m not mistaken – after the beginning of the test. It kind of messed up my strategy for the writing part though. I had planned on spending 5 minutes on each of the four paragraphs of task one, but when we were advised that 20′ had already passed, I had just finished paragraph 3. I therefore ended up with less time for task two. So perhaps it would be a good idea for the ones taking the test soon to check with their centres how timekeeping is supposed to be on the day of the test. This way, they can prepare accordingly.

Once again, thank you so very much for your help through this fantastic website. I’ve already recommended it to my friends who are taking the test in the future.

    Ana

    • Band 9 ! Fantastic! You must be feeling very proud. I’m really surprised that there was no clock in the room. The BC website states that every room will have clock: http://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/prepare-your-test/test-day-advice so it’s certainly something that students should check and possibly complain about. In a test that is so strictly timed, having no clock is ridiculous. Anyway, you’ve done amazingly well and are an inspiration to all IELTS students. Thanks for sharing your results and tips 🙂

    Dear Liz,
I did my Academic test on the 7th of May, and here are my results.
    Listening – 9.0
    Reading – 9.0
    Writing – 7.5
    Speaking – 8.0
    Overall – 8.5
Thank you for the comprehensive material provided in your blog, especially for the writing component! I wish to share some tips for writing, which I will normally allocate 25 mins for Task 1 and 35 mins for Task 2.

What I find very important is that the first 5 mins of both tasks should be used to draw up a detailed plan (e.g. In task 1, I plan out roughly what to write in my overview and body, whereas in task 2 – I used the Point,Elaboration,Example Format for my body para)

With a thorough plan, I was able to write smoothly throughout the essay without getting a writer’s block, which will probably be detrimental in a timed exam. Also, as unoriginal as it may sound, it can be very helpful to practise a few sentence structures to use in both tasks. For example, you can simply plug in the data values for task 1. This will definitely save a lot of time in the writing task!

However, I have been studying in Singapore for the past 18 years, so I do have a solid English foundation before the exam. It is still vital to have a strong grasp of the basics before attempting any advanced tricks.

    Thank you!

    • Very well done! Overall 8.5 is really great. Thanks for sharing your tips. I agree completely. Spending time planning and analysing the tasks before writing is essential. It means the essay can be written faster and also with more accuracy as you can focus on grammar and vocab rather than ideas (which you’ve already planned). 🙂

    Dear Liz,
    I received my results today.
    L-8.5
    R-8.5
    W-8.0
    S-8,5
    O-8.5

I needed an overall score of 7.5. I have only done 4 practice tests before the exam as I am currently working on my thesis. I lived in English speaking countries when I was little, so it’s a different story. However, I was quite concerned about the writing part. Gladly, I came across one of your videos on the writing part just a day before the exam. This helped me tremendously and I would like to thank you for that. You’re brilliant.

    Hi, Liz and dear friends!

I’m a university teacher of English from Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.
I took IELTS Academic on April 16, 2016.
    I received overall Band 9:
    R:9 S:9 W:8.5 L:8.5

My recipe for success is if you want to know something profoundly, start teaching it!
Of course, it takes a lot of time to achieve such a high level, especially if you are a non-native speaker like me. Yet, for me, taking IELTS this year was a matter of professional necessity and proof of my proficiency (last time I took it in 2011 and received 8.5).
Therefore, it was relatively easy for me to feel confident and relaxed as for the last 5 years, I have trained many students who received high scores in IELTS Academic.

Most people here have already provided a lot of great tips on what should be done if you want to get a high band. I would only add that I always recommend my trainees (and I do it myself, ‘walk the talk’, so to say) to watch TED talks (www.ted.com) on a regular basis, making sure you explore talks on various topics which are found in IELTS as well, for instance, Education, Technology, Health, Environment, to name but a few. Then, during the class, I give students the opportunity to report on the talk of their choice, highlighting the academic-level vocabulary and identifying the key ideas. In this way, TED gives them a powerful foundation, and allows practicing reading (transcripts), listening and speaking. Furthermore, creative teachers can also combine all these activities with an engaging follow-up writing task, choosing the essay which is aligned with the topic of the TED talk.

Hope my advice will help aspiring students and teachers!

    Hi Liz,

I am a “native” English speaker from Singapore and have been speaking English all my life. I have been studying and working in the UK for the last 7 years. In order to leave the UK to move to Australia, I had to sit the IELTS. The irony is bewildering. Anyway, I signed up for the test three days before, not knowing what to expect and mostly hoping to wing it. But I was fortunate I didn’t, and even more fortunate I stumbled across your videos and website. It is full of invaluable tips, which was probably make-or-break for me. This was especially crucial in the writing and speaking sessions, where I relied heavily on your guidelines of what the examiners want.

I am pleased to say that for my academic IELTS on the 21st April, I secured an overall band of 8.5, with 9, 9, 8, and 8.5, in listening, reading, writing and speaking respectively. (How’s that for long complex sentences ha!) this wouldn’t have been possible without your generosity and painstaking efforts in sharing your knowledge and tips. From the bottom of my help, a big THANK YOU!

I meant to say heart, not help haha. Damn autocorrect!

    • Liz says

Overall 8.5 is really great. I’m so pleased for you. I’m very glad you found my site because so many students presume that IELTS is just a language test and as long as their language skills are strong, they’ll do well. Such a mistake. All students need to understand what is required of them in the test and gain an understanding of how to avoid pitfalls. So, you should be proud of that score !! Well done 🙂

  274. Hi Liz!

Guess what? My results are out! and I got an overall band of 8.5!

Reading and Listening – 9! 🙂 My only advice here is that read the instructions properly! I remember in reading, the last 3 questions were yes, no and not given but initially I wrote true , false and I only detected the mistake while revising (thank God I had enough time to recheck)! another tip for reading is just skim through the paragraphs, underline what you think the key points are and just get to know what is where! Then go directly to the questions because no matter how intently you read the topics, you HAVE to come back and re-read the paragraphs to answer the questions!

Speaking – 8.0. I remember making a few grammatical mistakes! But i didn’t really try that much to correct them because I was worried about my fluency! I also wasn’t happy about the content of my talk! but now that the result is out I realize that the subject of the talk does not matter! It’s your grammar, fluency, vocabulary and other things that Liz has mentioned that really counts towards getting a good score!

Writing – 7.5! I am actually quite surprised that I got 7.5! I was actually thinking I’d get somewhere near 6 or 6.5!
The first reason: I messed up the papers assigned for each task! Task one paper was yellow coloured and task 2 was white! And there were clearly written instructions on top of each paper! I don’t know what I was doing but I ended up writing task 1 in task 2 paper and vice versa! I think it was 10 minutes before the end of the exam that I realized I did something wrong! When I told the invigilator he told me not to panic and continue writing. He then went out to talk to his supervisor I think, and when he returned he told me to just convert task 1 paper to task 2 like this (–t-a-s-k-1– => task2) and the same for task 2 paper!

The second reason is I think the main reason for which I got heavily penalized! My task one was about change in population aged 65+ and I completely forgot to mention anything related to 65+ (elderly population, aging population and so on…)! So basically my report became about change in overall population! I didn’t realize this mistake even when I was revising the report! When I came out of the exam room and started discussing with my friends about the exam then only I became aware it!
My suggestion for writing (or reading / listening) is read the instructions! You don’t have to read them like you’re reading a scientific paper but just make sure you READ them! I was in such a rush to fill the form (name, candidate no…) that I ignored the instructions completely and ended up making a huge mistake!

So keep your head cool! Stay calm, they give you enough time to write your name and other stuff! Don’t rush!:/

Thank you so very much Liz. 🙂 You’ve really helped me a lot to achieve the scores that I got today! 🙂 This is literally the best website for anyone who preparing for ielts and I’ll definitely recommend it to my friends! 🙂

    Hi Liz,

I am a native English speaker. I was born and raised in the UK. As I studied abroad, I have to get a minimum of 7.5 in each band for my professional registration. I recently took the test with little preparation and got the following:
    9 Reading
    9 Listening
    9 Speaking
    7 Writing

I was absolutely astonished. Maybe it was due to the lack of preparation but surely an exam designed to assess English proficiency should have been a breeze for me? I have an A* in both GCSE and A level English Language so I don’t believe grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and lexical resource are my achilles heel preventing me getting at least a 7.5.

Where might have I gone wrong? Any advice would be welcomed as it is quite a frustrating exam which I believe isn’t so much about English proficiency but IELTS proficiency.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you Liz.
For the IELTS I followed Liz’ advise.
Although I do not qualify to give quality advise as Liz, I will give few pointers/tips which helped me.

    1) Firstly, follow https://ieltsliz.com/. It is a one stop shop for IELTS test takers. Try NOT to refer more than 1 IELTS book. For me the above link was sufficient.

    2) When you come across a new word, note it down, find examples of its usage, understand it and make at least 5 ORIGINAL sentences with it.

    3) Non native speakers try to THINK IN ENGLISH as much as possible because we are used to thinking in our native language.

    4) ASSISTANCE from a friend or relative with good English proficiency would help.

    5) PRACTICE reading and writing. It will always be of benefit even after IELTS test.

    6) Don’t aim for the qualifying band, AIM HIGHER. Band 9 is possible in Listening and Reading. I myself did that and got an 8 for each. So keep a margin for error, we are not robots.

7)Alert the exam supervisor if you have any discomfort at the venue, before the test begins. Make sure that you are perfectly comfortable. I was feeling very cold at the venue as the air conditioner was directly above me. I alerted the supervisor but they did not do anything about it. I felt it would be fine but it did distract me and missed a few words.

    8) DO NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH in speaking and writing. It will convey that you did not even understand the question.

    9) Bad handwriting can bring a supposedly 9 to a 6. Please be LEGIBLE.

10)Lastly,I would strongly suggest every one to STAY COOL before and during the examination. Listening and speaking part, in particular, needs a very calm and composed mind. It is not a live or die situation, it is just an exam. Have faith in yourself. One of my teachers used to say ” You do your best and to God leave the rest”. It helps me with my exam anxiety.

The above stated points are my personal opinion based on my experience of writing the exam in India for the first time. I hope it was helpful.
    Thank you.

  277. Excellent results!! Well done 🙂

Thanks Liz for your extraordinary resources that make IELTS prep quite handy. I took the exam on the 5th Dec in Sydney and got 9 bands in all components. The only resource I used was this webpage of yours. Didn’t have much time to prepare; I only spent 1-2hours for about 1 week. Many thanks for your enthusiasm and support you’ve been providing to us.

I feel like this is the best present for the Chrismas 🙂 Now it’s time to open a long awaited shampagn bottle 🙂

    Hey Liz,

I really found your website useful! I needed to get 8 in each band but always had trouble with writing. This time I finally got through with it, so I’m really considering this as an early Christmas present.

    My results:
    L : 8.5
    R : 9
    W : 8.5
    S : 9

    Overall 9.

I just really practised well for writing. You have to know how to write each type of letter and your essays need to have a good structure.
I never had a problem with Reading and Listening – however, the True False Not Given video you put up was really helpful. I didn’t practise much for speaking either because I have been speaking English my whole life.

    • Band 9 overall – brilliant! Well done! Particularly with band 9 in speaking and band 8.5 in writing. Yes, definitely a great Christmas present for you 🙂
      All the best

    Liz,
Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I recently achieved my goal by scoring WAY higher than I could have ever imagined! On my third attempt in Academic IELTS I got the following band scores:
    L: 9 R: 9 Writing: 8 Speaking: 9 Overall: 9.
Initially I scored just below the required amount which was extremely frustrating and not only that – but the especially high fee for the UKVI IELTS made me decide to seriously step up and approach the exam in a different way. I practiced like I’ve never practiced/studied before in my life – for a good few weeks I would put in 1-2 hours after work each day and even more so over weekends, timing myself and finding the best methods and strategies for locating answers quickly in reading and writing well structured essays. Your guidance helped a lot and I would just like to say again from the bottom of my heart – thank you.

    • Band Score 9 overall – fantastic!! Well done! You obviously worked really hard to achieve that and clearly have understood the techniques needed for success in IELTS. You should be very proud. Getting band 8 in writing and band 9 in speaking is excellent. You are an inspiration to all IELTS students.
      All the best

  282. Hi Liz,

Thank you for your site. I had applied for the IELTS exam one week before the actual test and had relied purely on your site plus test questions. There were some great tips for the different parts.

I managed to get an overall 8.5 score for IELTS academic with:
    – Listening 9.0

    – Writing 8.0
    – Speaking 8.0

    Thank you once again.

  284. Hi Liz
Unfortunately, I did not see this site before sitting my IELTS Academic exam on 24 Oct 2015.
I came across it today whilst browsing for my results. It has an amazing wealth of resources. It is highly likely that I would have achieved higher scores had I used some of the tips on this site. I will definitely recommend this site to other IELTS applicants.
    My scores – L/W/ R/S were 9, 8.5, 8, 8 – overall 8.5; I had previously sat this exam in 1998 when I achieved OBS of 7.5!
I did approx 5 listening practice tests, 4 academic reading tests, 2 writing practise tests under exam conditions prior to the exam.
I wish all prospective applicants the very best of luck.

  285. Listening:9

    Overall:9

I am a Russian living in Russia, but I teach courses on history and literature in English. I intend to apply for a PhD, and this is my second time taking the test. I had L9, R8.5, W7.5, S9 on my first attempt two years ago, but procrastinated with the application. Needless to say, the previous Writing score was dispiriting, since I thought a literature professor should know how to write an essay.

I had some suspicions as to why the Writing grade was comparatively low. The most glaring mistake was to cite obscure research, which was not required at all and which must have seemed annoying. Perhaps I fretted too much and missed some detail of the question, though I tried to be assertive and thorough. I also suspect that my text generally looked like I was trying too hard. This time, I told myself not to be fancy, but to make it read like a regular newspaper article, and to closely follow the structure suggested by Liz and IELTS-Simon. I also paid much attention to outlining the text in a clear fashion, with four sufficiently diverse points for each paragraph. Looks like it worked.

There was an incredibly annoying episode in the Listening section. One of the characters first cancelled a date they mentioned, then mentioned another date in such a fashion that the listener in a natural conversation would ignore it, but then back-pedalled and said the briefly mentioned date was the one they wanted. They never mentioned the date again, so I to somehow guess it logically. My advice is to never lose your concentration during Listening, not even when you are signalled to do so.

  287. Hi Liz,

Thanks for the amazing writing tips. I used your website only for the Writing tasks and see what happened:

    IELTS GT (first attempt)
    Reading – 8.0

    • Hi Kalpesh,

Honestly, it was simply practice. I used Liz’s examples for writing. First and foremost, it is extremely important to write an introduction for your writing task. Liz has brilliantly explained how one can write an introduction as per the expected format.

For the GT task B, the key was to recognize if the task requires me to write both advantages and disadvantages or state my own opinion, or both. In my experience, for every IELTS task 2 questions, you can find both plus and minus points. As soon as I recognized that a particular task required me to do so, I quickly listed the plus and minus points and examples that could be used to support them. I chose the points that I has strongest examples for. Using phrases such as ‘In my opinion’, ‘I believe’, ‘ Many believe’, ‘On the one hand’, ‘On the other hand’, do seem to help. I also made sure I used different words for the same context, for example, I replaced ‘firms’ with ‘organizations’ or ‘companies’.

Practice is the key. I started practicing using some of Liz’s examples. I read her essays first, tried writing them on my own, copying a little, whenever I thought I was missing something. This helped me in getting acquainted with the common phrases. I practiced at least 3 such examples. I didn’t time myself in the beginning, but later realized I was taking a little over 40 minutes.

I then used some other topics to write on my own, also timing myself this time. Although I was succeeding in writing the essay within 40 mins, they lacked the strength of a good essay. I wasn’t able to justify my points with good examples. That’s when I started writing ideas for various topics, just the ideas this time, not a complete essay. I wanted to make sure I have sufficient content to fill my essay and not just scribble gibberish. I did the same with my writing task 1.

On the day of the exam, I did fall short of time. I still hadn’t finished my writing task 1 while 20 mins had already passed. I left it half way there and started task 2 since it carried more points. I was able to complete task 2 in 35 mins and finish the rest of task 1 in last 5 mins. I considered this to be a terrible mistake as I didn’t place enough efforts in practicing task 1.

Suggestions: Although task 2 carries more marks than task 1, please do not take it for granted. Time yourself for task 1 as well. Consider practicing both tasks simultaneously and make sure you place a quick reminder for the 20 min mark every time you do so.

I have had my education in English medium and it took 4 days(4 hrs a day) to practice writing. If I can do it, anybody can. I honestly didn’t expect a 9, but for sure an 8 since I was sure I wouldn’t loose any marks for grammar, incomplete sentences or insufficient words.

Just follow Liz’s tips sincerely and make sure you practice until you get better.

      Good Luck!
      -Vinny

A little disappointed with my speaking score, as I knew for sure I could have done so much better, but a huge thank you for this blog! It helped me so much throughout my time studying for this exam. All the best!

  289. I received my results today:

    W 8.5
    S 9

    So it’s possible!! Yay! 🙂
I’m German but have been living and working in Australia for 10 years which obviously helped a lot for my overall level of English. I needed the IELTS test because I want to do some further post grad study here and have completed all my previous school and uni in Germany.

I spent 3 weeks (part time) preparing, including
    – reading/watching the tips on Liz’s and Simon’s blogs (ielts-simon.com)
    – understanding the test format
    – understanding the scoring criteria & expectations
    – analysing model essays (especially Simon’s which I believe are the best)
    – completing a few practice exams (all online material, I didn’t use any books)
    – analysing my mistakes
    – refining my strategy for each part (you really need to find out what works best for you; not all tips work for everyone)

Most importantly, I was calm and confident in the test. I felt that I had prepared well and reminded myself of that.

I hope this helps and encourages some other students.
    Good luck!

  290. Hi Liz,
Thanks to your great website, I achieved:
