  2. Dr. Mona says

The graph illustrates how much dairy products are consumed by the people in the USA from 1970 to 2010. Units are measured in pounds per person.

Overall, the consumption of cheese and yogurt climbed over the given period, whereas full-fat and low-fat icecreams stay relatively the same.

Cheese consumption rose steadily from 8 in 1970 to above 15 around 1987. Then it dropped slightly before it had a gradual climb to reach 20 by 2000 and further increased above 20 by 2010. Similarly, yogurt consumption rose steadily from 1 in 1970 to just below 10 in 2010, although there were only few minor dips during this period. On the other hand, full-fat icecream fluctuates progressively to reach about 9 from around 11 in the begining, likewise low-fat icecream amount fluctuates over the given period but always stays between 3 and 5.

The graph illustrates USAs consumption of 4 kinds of milk products (cheese, yogurt, low-fat and full-fat ice cream) measured in pounds per person over the period of 4 decades analyzed every 5 years from 1970 to 2010.
Overall, the type of dairy product that Americans ingested more during these decades was cheese, while low-fat ice cream had the lowest percentage of consumption compared to the other goods.
Cheese eaten by Americans rose steadily from around 7 pounds in 1970 to more than 20 pounds per person in 2010. Similarly, yogurt increased from 0 pounds in 1970 to almost 10 pounds in the final year.
On the contrary, full-fat ice cream had a small drop from just over 10 pounds at the start of the initial year to slightly under this number in 2010. Meanwhile, consumption of low-fat ice cream fluctuated nearby 4 pounds per person from the start of the assessed time to the end.

    • the graph provides for types of dairy products that were comsumed in the USA over 40-years period, starting in 1970.

Overall,it can be seen that the the consumption patterns of cheese and yogurt gradually increased, whereas the utilization of low-fat ice cream and full-fat ice cream slightly decreased in the USA.Further, cheese was the most ingestion product.

Looking at the data sets in more detail it is evident that the level of consumption cheese stood at about 12 pound per person in 1970.By 2010,this figure had steadily increased to approximately 25 pound per person, which was the highest point on the chart. The consumption of yogurt slightly raising 2 to 8 pound in 1970 and 2010,respectively.

  4. Jenny says

The line graph illustrates how many dairy products (cheese, full-fat and low-fat ice cream, and yogurt) in pounds per person were eaten by American customers between 1970 and 2010.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the popularity of cheese and yogurt inclined over a 40-year period, whereas for an ice cream it remained relatively the same. Furthermore, the most popular product was cheese.

The amount of cheese consumed started from nearly 8 pounds per person, which was nearly 8 times more than for yogurt, witnessed a sharp incline to about 17 lbs after 1985. After a slight drop by about 1 pound before 1990, the positive trend kept on onwards to its peak at nearly 23 lbs by 2010. Moving on to yogurt, its consumption observed almost a 10 time growth: from nearly 1 lbs in 1970 to about 9 pounds 40 years later.

On the other hand, the amount of ice cream eaten almost did not grow throughout the years. The customers preferred to eat a full-fat ice cream: its amount declined marginally from nearly 11 to about 9 in the final year. Likewise, a low-fat ice cream consumption was leveling off at just under 5 lbs for over 40 years, however it was roughly 2 times less than for a full-fat dessert.

  5. Hi, this is my full writing task. Could you give me any feedback? Thank you.

On the other hand, Low-fat ice cream just fluctuated over the period given. In the final years, Cheese thrived and successfully replaced Full-fat ice cream to become a leading dairy product.

The consumption of cheese increased significantly which was over 7 pounds in 1970 and reached just around 25 pounds in 2010 and eventually became the main dairy product in the US. Similarly, the amount of yogurt rose from just over 0 to just under 10.

Conversely, Full-fat ice cream started as the most popular product which stood at more than 10 pounds but then dropped of about 2 pounds to reach approximately 9 pounds in 2010. Low-fat ice cream, however, fluctuated at around 4 pounds over 40 year period.

  6. hey Liz, it should be 12pounds, not 2 pounds in line 5 . I was wondered why the answer is decline 😂

    • The sentence is correct as it is written. The sentence is about the difference from start to finish. It started at around 11 and ended at about 9. So, this is a decrease of about 2 pounds. It is another way of presenting information instead of giving the start and finish amounts – give the difference (the change).

  7. khawaja says

    Great work 🌹

  10. BelaHaqi says

    Hi Liz,

Can we use past perfect continuous tense instead of part tense in describing this kind of line graph (which the periods happen in the past). For example, can we use:
“Overall, both the consumption cheese and yogurt had been increasing over the period given”
    instead of
Overall, both the consumption of cheese and yogurt rose decreased over the period given.”
    Thx 🙂

    • You use “has been increasing” if the increase is still happening today. Does this graph show that it is still happening in 2017? Check your use of grammar tenses.

Is it fine to consider writing “The amount of cheese eaten by people from the USA progressively increased from about 7 pounds in 1970….in 2010” instead of writing “increased considerably” or should it be “progressively increased”?

    pls reply at the earliest

  20. Hi Liz
I realy find your website very helpful , but I have question about line graphs and task 1 in general
I always sruggle with which type of tense I should use especially when the period in graphs over past , now and future. What is the best way to overcome this challenge?

    Thanks…

    • You use past when you are given dates in the past. You use present when there are no dates. You use future when you have future dates.
      All the best
      Liz

    Hi mom !
First of all I want to thank you for providing such valuable lessons.
However, as far as I know that in line graph presenting ,usage of passive tenses and perfect ones are not allowed. Could you please explain it a little bit more??
    Thanks in advance !

    • You should use the grammar tense that is grammatically correct and appropriate for the information being presented. That might be the passive voice or a perfect tense depending on the context. However, the most common time to use the passive voice is with diagrams.
      All the best
      Liz

  24. hi Liz
    I have a question
do these sentences mean the same ?
there was a decrease of 2 pound
there was a decrease by 2 pound

    • They mean the same but the grammar is wrong in one. The first one is correct but the second one should be written “it decreased by 2 pounds”. One sentences uses a noun “a decrease” and the other uses a verb. They both relate to the amount of the actual decrease.
      Liz

Thanks for the simple explanation,it really helps..
I have my Ielts-Academic on 18th of June.
Q5. There was a decrease in the amount of full fat ice cream eaten of about 12 pounds….its mentioned 2 pounds..

    Thanks..

    • The amount did not fall by 12 pounds, it went from about 11 to about 9 which means it fell by 2 pounds. Don’t forget that “by” means the amount of the change.
      All the best
      Liz
