    Hello Liz,
Thanks a lot for helping out!

If I do understand,” improving sentences” is mainly about paraphrasing and introducing transition words, is it?

    • It’s about a range of things: including more specific details, linking and paraphrasing.

      • Thanks Liz for the great work you’re doing.
Please, I’d like to know if one is penalized for leaving any question unanswered. We are told to guess if unsure of an answer instead of leaving a blank space.
        Thanks.

        • Always guess. Don’t leave an empty space. You do not lose points for getting an answer wrong – so always guess. There is no penalty for an empty space – but it is crazy not to try and guess.

  14. Thank you very much, Liz.It was very useful!

  15. mam I hv One Qus If we r Agree with the Statement so we just write dwn only agree point or BP1 And Bp2 for agree Nd bp3 For disagree???

  20. Rawia Obida says

    Hi Liz ,
Is it applicable to paraphrase the word, for example instead of local charities, can i use reigonal charities?
and instead of aid, can i use the word help?
    Many Thanks

    • Aid and help are not the same thing. Charities do help but they provide aid. The words are used differently. Regional is a broader term than local. Local often exists within a city or a few towns rather than a whole region.

  21. Mabruk says

Thanks Liz for this lesson , after doing some of exercises I find this lesson very useful . Hope to see more of same type of exercise in the future.
    Thanks

  22. Liz don’t you think the last example is too long for a sentence.Ive always felt that sentences should be short with complete meaning.
Do give me your valuable suggestion.

    Thanks

    • The last sentence is long. On the whole, most students should aim for shorter sentences. I have offered that example for the very highest level students. It is as long as is possible and can only be used by band 8.5 or 9 students. I’ve just added one more example for number 5 which is shorter and convenient for all students to use as a model. Check above again to see it.

      • Ashish Shah says

Thank you, specifically for adding that long sentence. It helps a lot to know exactly what is required to get 8.5/9 bands. It is crucial that we aim higher. I have subscribed to all your advanced writing lessons and i hope that it helps me to reach above 7 in writing which is currently at 6.5 {for both the attempts}. I plan to take the test next month. Any suggestions on how to practice for Writing?

        Thanks in Advance.

        Ashish

        • You definitely need to spend time learning ideas for topics. There are rarely new topics in writing. Nearly all topics have, at some time, been used before but with essay questions phrased differently. So, learn ideas. Also practice developing those ideas using no more than two to four supporting points. Then review your linking and make sure that you are not using any informal linking. Linking is crucial, easy to learn and yet so many students make mistakes with it, thinking that it isn’t important. After that review your sentence structures and tenses – review all common errors. Then review your techniques again from my videos and compare them with my model essays: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/. After, you’ll need to focus on task 1. Remember that although task 1 is only 33%, if you learn correctly, it will be an easy 33%.
