The following is a lesson for IELTS reading practice based on the topic of ants. This reading exercise is to practise diagram completion and also TFNG questions for IELTS reading.
There are 8 questions below. Questions 1-5 are diagram completion and questions 6 – 8 are true, false, not given. The answer link is provided below the questions.
Reading Practice Lesson for IELTS:
Passage: About Ants There are more than 10,000 known species of ants living throughout the world. Ants can be identified by the constriction that looks like a waist between the abdomen, at the end of the body, and the part of the body called the thorax , which is located before the head. Their bodies are covered with a hard armour called the exoskeleton. While the exoskeleton is their defensive weapon, their rear abdominal stinger is their offensive one. Like other insects, they have six legs; each with three joints. Ants have large heads with compound eyes, elbowed antennae, which act as sensors, and powerful pincers, known as mandibles. These pincers are an ant’s most useful tool which are used for grabbing things, cutting and are a kind of trap-jaw.
There are three types of adult ants living in the colony: the queen, female ants, and male ants. Queen ants are the largest ants in the colony. They have wings and their purpose is to lay eggs. The queens can live up to 30 years. Depending on the ant species and the nest community size, there may be one or more queens in the colony. The ant life cycle has four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The queen lays the eggs, which will hatch into larvae in a couple of days. The helpless larva are fed and groomed by the worker ants until they pass through the pupal stage. In a little more than a week, an adult ant will emerge and the metamorphosis is complete.
You can DOWNLOAD the reading passage here but the 8 questions must be viewed online: Reading Passage Ants. The answers are linked below.
Questions 1 – 5
Complete the diagram below using no more than two words from the passage for each question.
Questions 6 – 8
Are the following statements True, False or Not Given according to the information given in the passage above?
- 6. The antennae of an ant cannot bend.
- 7. Only queen ants have wings.
- 8. Larva undergo metamorphosis in the pupal stage.

Hii Liz, i have a doubt, practically if you see thorax is the correct answer for second part but technically thorax must be at mandibles place(5th position) because it is mentioned as the part called thorax, located before the head, i’ve confused whether the passage is explaining from left to right or right to left for that moment, because as it is mentioned in the next line as rear abdominal stinger, actually thorax is backside of the head right? can you explain it, little bit confused.
The problem is that you have separated the words “before the head” from the rest of the sentence. When words or phrases are given within a sentence, you must look at the context to the whole sentence to understand their meaning. The passage says this about the thorax:
….the constriction that looks like a waist between the abdomen, at the end of the body, and the part of the body called the thorax , which is located before the head.”
The words “before the head” do not mean “in front of the head” in this context. In the sentence, locations are described by starting at the middle with the waist (the narrow part). The sentence refers to other parts of the body from that position (looking from the middle). So, from the middle, the places on either side are the abdomen (at the end) and the thorax before the head (meaning the thorax comes first travelling from the middle of the body and the head comes second when travelling from the middle of the body. “Before the head” means thorax body part first and then head after that.
Also, when describing the mandibles (the mouth piece pincers), we would never say “they are before the head”. The words “before something” imply that they are separate, not part of the head. For example, on a human being, our mouths are not before our heads – our mouths are not separate from our heads.
Furthermore, in the reading passage, you find a sentence which focuses only on parts of the head, so that would indicate to you that your answer is probably wrong and should prompt you to return to the passage and check your other answers.
Thank you Liz, even though i’ve written correctly in my practice book because the passage mentions clearly about powerful pincers as mandibles, but stuck with that question mark in my mind, now you have cleared it and made me understand to how to read it and analyze, thank you.
i am over the moon got 7/8 , thanks a lot dear liz
Good job!
Mam Please get well soon . I pray for your speedy recovery.
Thanks
Hi Liz,
I have been following your blog for a while, much thanks to you for helping us all prepare for IELTS. It is the best guide available.
I have a confusion about the following question I was practicing.
Question:
Reproductions of fine art should only be sold to the public if they are of high quality.
Text:
If appropriate works of fine art could be rendered permanently accessible to the public by
means of high-fidelity reproductions, as literature and music already are, the public may feel somewhat less in awe of them.
I answered this as Yes, but the answer key says it should be Not Given.
Can you please explain the reasoning behind this? As my understanding is that music and literature are also sold to the public.
The passage doesn’t say anything about limiting reproductions based on quality for selling purposes. Did you go through the question statement very carefully underlining the key words before you checked the passage? The question is about – limiting sales to only high quality reproductions. Often re-wording the statement gives more clarity. The passage, on the other hand, does not refer to any aspect of sales. The passage only says that if the public see such excellent reproductions, they won’t be so impressed by the real works of art. So, you see the information in the statement isn’t in the passage. But you can see a number of repeated keywords which is probably why you got confused. Always make sure you have the complete meaning clear in your head of the question statement before you check the passage. I hope you find this explanation useful.
Thank you, Liz . This website is really useful. I feel that my skillis improving after doing exercises of reading. You are one of the best teacher.
I’m glad you feel you are improving 🙂

Hi Liz, I have a really silly doubt here, but taking the courage to ask you!!!
In the diagram, it’s pointing to only one eye, so if we write both compound ‘eye’ or ‘eyes’ will it be considered a correct answer?
Thanks in advance!
Always listen and write down what the transcript says.
Thank you for this. I have a similar question too. But it’s clear.
Hi Liz,
Thanks a lot for the quick reply!
Yes it was from Cambridge 5, and I made a mistake in one word.
All the while I was reading it as ‘fireflies’ instaead of ‘glow-worm’. In fact, the horrible mistake I made was, I was assuming fireflies and glow-worm were same. You are an eye-opener.
The correct TFNG question:”Scientists have only recently been able to list the exact number of glow-worm species.”
Passage statement: “The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000 species, with new ones being discovered all the time.”
So, since the passage doesn’t talk about the exact number of glow-worm species, rather it talks about the number of fireflies species, the answer would be “NOT GIVEN”. Am I correct?
Also for clarification, If the question was about fireflies, like I sent before, then will the answer be FALSE, because it says “over 2000” but not the exact number? Or will the answer be “NOT GIVEN” because it doesn’t talk about if anyone found the exact number?
Sorry, I am getting confused with this FALSE or NOT GIVEN.
Stop over thinking. You see that you made a mistake with one word and that altered everything. Now you know to be more careful – that is the lesson to learn from this mistake. Do not think about rewording the question to challenge further understanding – it would not happen in that way. So, now move on to something else. Here is a brief overview of TFNG:
TRUE = the information in the statement is correct – the passage shows that the information is accurate.
FALSE = the information in the statement is faulty, it is wrong. This is because the passage shows an opposite meaning or it shows that part of the statement is actually incorrect.
NG = we do not know if the information in the statement is right or wrong. The passage doesn’t give enough information for us to clearly state “it is right” or “it is wrong”.
Does that help??
Yes, it makes it crystal clear.
I need to keep telling myself NOT GIVEN means passage doesn’t give enough information for me to state it is T or F. and FALSE means it has to CONTRADICT with the information in the passage. I can’t thank you enough Liz. I wish you get the best of the everything what you do.
Hi Liz, Thanks a lot for the key techniques in answering IELTS questions and the explanations you provide. It is a greatest treasure I have ever found.
Could you please help with below TFNG question. The paragraph says “The fireflies are a huge group containing over 2000 species, with new ones being discovered all the time.”
And the TFNG question is: “Scientists have only recently been able to list the exact number of firefly’s species.”
Should the answer be FALSE or NOT GIVEN?
Hi Saloni to me the answer is False as it contradicts the statement in the passage.
Passage states “over 2000 species with new ones being doscovered all the time” which means it keeps on increaing so no exact number can be found.
Question says they found exact number which is actually contradict statement
Hi Liz,
Thanks for your amazing blog. Content is very useful for me.
I have one doubt about ANTS ELBOWED ANTENNA. In question six it says it cannot bend. In the passage there is no any part related to ANTENNA capabilities. So I have selected NG for this. (There is no evident to say there is a joint in the middle in the passage) Please clarify your answer for me.
You need to review the word “ELBOWED”. Read the other comments to learn about this.
There ain’t any answer. I clicked (click here for ans ) mutiple times nothing happend

Instead of the answer Mandibles, to give the answer Powerful Species is true or not?
No. The words “powerful species” do not relate to a part of the body. The diagram shows parts of an ant’s body.

I took almost 15 mins to answer the questions, Have I spent so much time deciding?
In the IELTS test, you have only 20 mins to answer all the questions for one reading passage which contains more questions that this and a much longer passage. However, it is fine for training. Not all practice reading exercises need to be done with speed. Sometimes you can focus on developing scanning techniques or paraphrasing techniques. Decide which skill you will practice.
Thank you so much, Liz for your quick response.
This passage appeared in real exam – General.
I know the topic appeared in the test but this passage is from a website about ants. I try to create lessons based on IELTS reading topics and this topic can appear in either GT or Academic reading.

Does this type of passages come in General Test, In the official Cambridge book, there are only 2 practice tests for the General exam? I wonder if I could practice these instead?
The GT reading passages have a different content and different layout (at least passage 1 and 2 are different). The question types are the same as the academic test. You can certainly use my materials to practise with. You should get the IELTS Cambridge test books for GT. There are 12 and each book has two GT tests.

1. Abdomen
2. Thorax
3. Abdominal stinger
4. Compound eyes
5. Mandibles
6. False
7. Not given
8. False
Reason for T, F, NG:
6. The question reads the antennae cannot be bent, whereas, the passage represents ‘elbowed antennae’ which is contradictory.
7. The correct answer is “Not given” because the question asks ‘only the queen…’, but we have no information about other types of ants in the passage.
8. From the passage, we can infer that metamorphosis gets completed once an adult ant emerges following the pupal stage but not after the larva; hence the answer may be wrong. (I am still unsure about the answer).

Hi Liz thanks for a great help. Could you please help me out in GT reading??I feel confused sometimes, due to traps used in reading passages
All questions and techniques are the same for GT reading and academic reading. This means the only difference is the difficulty of the passage (GT is easier with everyday topics) and the layout (schedules, manuals, timetables etc). See this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-general-training-reading-information/ and this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-reading-tips-how-can-i-improve-my-score/.
