A listening lesson about the future of libraries. This is an interesting topic that can appear in IELTS speaking, listening, reading and writing task 2. So, it’s well worth using this lesson to gain ideas and vocabulary. The questions are sentence completion which are common question types in IELTS listening.

TranscriptToday, libraries are not only about lending books. They are creative spaces, not only for individuals, but also teams. They are economic incubators and learning hubs. Most of all, the libraries are the entry points to the digital world. They are the way to embrace technology and avoid digital exclusion. Therefore, to improve technological literacy of local communities, libraries should be equipped with relevant technologies.
Here are some suggestions for future improvements of technology in libraries:
- Library Bookmark: First of all, the device would be a perfect companion when navigating through the library, by giving turn-by-turn directions to the book the patron wants. The device could also keep track of all borrowed books, as well as remind the user of the return dates.
- Delivery Drones: To get the book from a library, you can either go and find it, or you can let it find you. The future belongs to the unmanned flying machines, and just like Amazon drones can deliver the goods to customers, libraries could deliver the books to patrons.
- FingerLink: It is a project currently developed by Fujitsu that will let you use digital tools to work with a printed book. It’s a stand you can put on a library desk. It includes two elements: a camera to read the information from the real world, and the projector to display digital information in the real world.
Spelling must be correct to have the answer marked correct. Using all capital letters is recommended for listening and reading answers.
- HUBS
- You must have “s”. If you write this answer as “hub” it will be marked wrong. You are being tested on being able to hear the difference between plural and singular.
- LITERACY
- NAVIGATING
- (DELIVERY) DRONES
- Brackets are used in the answer key of test books to show possible answers. In this case, it is possible to have the answer “drones” or “delivery drones”. You cannot use brackets in your test – you must choose only one answer.
- It is not possible to have “flying machines”. The paraphrase of drones is actually “unmanned flying machines” but it contains 3 words which goes over the word count limit.

Hi Liz,
I hope this message finds you well. I had a question regarding the listening test instructions. In the answer key, some words appear without spaces even though I wrote them with spaces in my answers. For instance, I wrote “top soil” as two separate words, but the answer key shows it as “topsoil” without a space.
Since the instructions clearly state that we should use no more than two words, I want to confirm whether this spacing difference will affect my score. Could you kindly clarify this for me?
You need to understand what these words are. These words are called compound nouns. They are nouns that are made of two words (usually two, but could be three). They can’t be altered. Some compound nouns have two words together, some have two words separately and some have two words joined as a hyphen. You must learn how the noun is written and get it right in the test.
Hello teacher!
I wondered If I could put Amazon drones instead of delivery drones? And if I put Amazon drones I’ll lose point ??
Thank you!
In the recording, the words “Amazon drones” are used when giving an example of delivering goods, not specifically books. So, it would be the wrong answer.
Hello, I wrote “devices” in the fourth sentence completion. Is it a wrong answer?
This is where IELTS exam skills come into play. The answer must relate to the information about “Delivery Drones”. At no point in the recording is the word “devices” used in relation to deliveries. Also, the answer to question 4 must come after the answer to question 3. In the part of the recording about “Library Bookmark” there is the word “device” but it is singular so it isn’t grammatically correct to put into the sentence. And of course, belongs to the wrong part of the recording.
So, from this, I want you to learn:
1. The word for the answer must be taken from the recording with being changed. You can’t put a similar word as your answer. The answer must be precisely as it is given in the recording.
2. The answer must relate to the information given in the recording about the topic in the question.
3. The answers to questions will always come in order in the recording. (note: this does not apply to the multiple choice question options)
Hi dear Liz I hope you are fine please suggest to me which Cambridge books (means 11 12 13 14 …) are best for practice at home.
Each book contains four authentic IELTS tests. IELTS publish one book a year and the latest book is number 19. But all the books are fine to use – the tests are all relevant.
Tank you so much god bless you dear.

you did a good job, keep practising!
I think mental preparation and mindset play pivotal role for high performance.
There are days, when I am making very few mistakes, if any, and days like today, when my answers are disastrous!!!
I guess consistency is the key and I am planning on improving that…
Anyway, dear Liz, thank you very much for your efforts in preparing these exercises and providing advice and explanation, I find all your resources very helpful in achieving my goals!
I’m glad you are enjoying my website lessons. Yes, performance can vary so much which is why you need to be so well rested before your test. Good luck!
Can “Directions” be a correct answer for number three?
You are basing that possibility in the meaning of the words. They are similar words (navigating / directions) but they are definitely not the same. The way the sentence is written means that the word “directions” doesn’t fit and isn’t a possible answer.

I’m glad you are making progress. Remember that you need to develop the skills and awareness so that you can transfer them to real authentic full tests to complete at home.
Hi Lizz
Thank you for the resources, appreciate you for all the work!
I have a doubt that For this particular section, I marked an answer as “Navigation” instead of “Navigating”, will this be marked a wrong or a right answer? Meaning remains the same though.
In IELTS, you must write the word you hear. You can’t alter it. The word “navigation” isn’t given in the audio in relation to that question so it would be marked wrong. All my lessons are aimed at helping people understand the pitfalls involved in the test so they can avoid them in on the day.
Dear Liz,
you’re doing a great job. Thank you so much.
please, how can we get the Cambridge iekts book and audio?
You can purchase them in educational book shops and through Amazon online.
Just wanted to write down interesting vocabulary I learned from the above topic. They are common but non-native users probably don’t use it as often:
1. Incubate: This means to sit on (eggs) so as to hatch. However, it can also be used to refer to developing an idea. > To incubate an idea.
2. Entry-point: A particular place where a person or thing can enter something or somewhere. > They are entry points to the digital world.
3. Patron: A person who gives financial or other support to a person, organisation or cause.
Very useful for everyone 🙂

MY website contains lessons and exercises. For full tests, you should only be using the IELTS Cambridge test books which have been published by IELTS and contain real tests for you to practise with at home.
Thank you Liz. God almighty will bless and heal you. I took the IELTS Academic Computer based, Listening 8,Reading8.5,Writing 6.5,speaking 7 and overall band is 7.5. I am happy because I had little time to prepare and someone recommended your teachings to me, which helped me in my exams. I am grateful.
Well done with your results 🙂
thank you
it’s really helpful
Hi Liz,
Thanks for all your lessons.
I have a doubt. I took listening test and wanted to understand how the correctness of an answer is calculated.
My answer is “Food is awful”, however, it was rated as wrong answer and the correct answer seems to be “Awful food”. It is also described to use not more than 3 words.
I couldn’t understand the difference between them and why my answer is wrong.
Please explain the difference and how to tackle these kind of answers.
I never saw your listening test or listened to the answer key which means I am not in a position to answer fully. Also you said you took a test and the answer key was different – where did you take this test? IELTS don’t provide answers to their tests unless the tests are in their published books. Did you use an online test on a website which was not official? Please don’t use those tests.
Regarding writing correct answers, you must write what you hear. Not what you think is a better answer. You can’t paraphrase.
i am an undergraduate kiddo and want to prepare for ielts so please guide me in getting a good score, actually i dont know how to start my preparation and dont know which one to go through first please guide me guys.
Thanks in advance…….
I suggest you go to the BC IELTS website and complete a full practice test online. Then come back to my website and start learning in detail about topics, questions, techniques etc which will help you navigate the test and maximise your score. This website has over 300 pages for you to learn from. Use the RED Menu Bar at the top of the site to access most of the free lessons.
Thanks so much Liz, i used your material and had 7.5 in my IELTS exams for March, 2023. God bless you exceedingly and grant you quick recovery.
Great to hear how well you’ve done. Good for you! Thanks for your wishes for my health. I’m a bit worried at the moment to be honest, but hopefully things will get better later this year.
Thank you so much for all your work, dear Liz!
I was able to score a band 8 overall IELTS score and a band 9 in the listening part, which was possible due to extensive practice opportunities on your website!

I really appreciate all the practice tests and on-the-day preparations.

Excellent!! Very well done to you 🙂 Thanks for sharing your results 🙂
Hi Liz!
I had a doubt, In listening part, can we write the answers in the answer sheet after each recording or do we need to write all the answers in the 10 min in the answer?
For the paper based test, you write on the question paper and then get 10 mins to transfer your answers to the answer sheet at the end of the listening recording test.
What is the correct answer for Q4? Is it “delivery drones” or “Delivery Drones”? With reference to the ” using Library Bookmark” in Q3, I think it should be – Delivery Drones.
Liz, Please clarify.
Capital letters are not important in the listening test. The recommendation is to use all capital letters for the paper based tested so that your handwriting is clear – that’s all.
Hello Liz! I just got my IELTS results and all thanks to you. Your blog really helped me a lot, I can’t even thank you enough.May God bless you abundantly for all that you do. I pray you get well soon too!

Great achievement! Congratulations. I have heard some changes in 2022 regarding difficulties in reading and speaking modules. Can you confirm it based on your personal experience?
Thank you!
I want to thank you Liz for providing access to a wide range of materials and an ocean of knowledge for IELTS preparation. I completed writing my IELTS exam and I got a 7.5 overall score with 7,8.5,8,6.5 in SLRW respectively. When I started preparation, I don’t know where to start or how to start… Then one of my friends suggested that your website is the best place for preparation and they are absolutely correct. I reached the page, started exploring slowly, then tried to complete all the lessons on the site. In the end, I left with vast knowledge on every category of IELTS which helped me crack the exam with a good score.
Once again Thank You so much, Liz.
All the best to the guys who are about to take the exam. You are at the best place.
It’s great to see your scores. Very well done! I’m glad you found my site and used it well. I tried to include as much as I could to help people prepare for IELTS 🙂

Hi Liz,
Thank you for all the lessons.
I have one question here. Will the questions always be in the sequential form? To give example. Question 1 can be answered after listening the first paragraph. Second question in the next para. Is this correct in all listening tests or it’s just this one?
I’m not sure what you mean about paragraphs. Are you referring to reading or listening? There are paragraphs in the reading passage. However, questions are not always in order – it depends on the question type. For listening, the questions are in order: 1, 2, 3 etc
Hi Liz, Great website indeed. Does all 4 IELTS sections have multiple choice/ we have MCQ for some only. Can you please guide.

Thank you so much, this page and material is really usefull to train and learn how to take the test.
Kind regards,
I WANT TO KNOW IF THE CONTENT ON THIS WEBSITE IS UPDATED OR NOT?
I work on this site very day. It is as updated as I can possibly make it. However, it is not a substitute for Official IELTS websites. This is a teachers website to learn from practice lessons and build awareness of the test.
Hi Liz , in the 3rd question I answered “turn-by-turn directions” instead of “Navigating” because I thought that in sentence completion you should write the word as you listen to it and nowhere in the recording do they say “navigating” . Can you please explain to me why I am wrong?
Thank you!
Did you check the transcript. Listen again and read the transcript at the same time – you will then spot the word “navigating”.
Dear Liz,
If someone decided to write the answers with simple letters, how to write the first word in a sentence (If we have to fill)? For example, Navigate or navigate? Can you please clarify this?
I will always recommend to use all capital letters.

All video lessons with me in them have sound. Check your laptop settings.
Your teaching makes IELTS more interesting, thanks alot
Hi Liz
can we see the script of the recording on the exam ?
No. You listening once to the recording and answer the questions at the same time. The transcripts are provided with the answer key in my lessons – as you can see on the page above. The transcript is not part of the listening test – it is part of checking answers. In the real test, you will not get access to the answers or transcript.
I would like to thank you for all your offers. Finding you is just like finding a treasure full of helpful information.
So thank you, Liz.
You’re welcome 🙂
Your website is the light at the end of my dark tunnel ,you are the saviore .. thank you .
Hello Liz, Can I play the audio as many as i can?
In the real IELTS test you hear the recording only once. See this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-help-faq/
If I write hub instead of hubs, will it be marked wrong?
I’ve updated the answer key to explain this. Take a look again.

Hi Liz,
Thank you for the great tips.
While practicing for one exam I see the answer as Diary and I marked it as Notebook.
Also one answer was ‘The Jungle’ I marked it as ‘Jungle’ .
Are these acceptable?
No. They would be marked wrong. Your answer must be 100% correct or it is marked wrong. Occasionally there are two possible answers which are usually written in the answer key as (the) jungle = this means the word “the” is optional. But not all answers are like that.
Thank you so much Liz. This could be the start of my dream. God Bless you always
Glad you like the lessons 🙂

Hi Liz, Thank you for your helpful videos.
In computer based listening test –
1) how much time do we get to go through the questions before each audio.
2) Once the audio is completed how much time do we get to fill in the answer for that particular audio.
3) Could you please give a distribution of timing for the listening test.
Please purchase the IELTS Cambridge test books which contain real tests or go to the BC IELTS website to try their free listening test. The questions you asked are the same for the paper based listening test as well. During a real test will help you get used to timing. You must write the answers as you listen. The only difference between the computer based test and the paper based test is that in the CD IELTS test, you only get 2 mins to check answers at the end of the test.
Good day Liz, please, did you do one on one coaching asides the teaching here.

Hello Liz,
I recently took an IELTS test. One the question in my listening was a date and the instruction was to use 2 words maximum. The date told in the question was 15th of May. Would it okay if I wrote 15 May?
Note: I took CDIELTS
It is 100% fine to do that. We never write the word “of” when we write dates in English.
Thanks for your prompt reply. Instead of “15th May”, I wrote “15 May”. I am sure you would have noticed the same in my previous question. But I just want to make sure. Would it be still okay to do that?
Thanks a lot Liz
Yes, it’s fine. There is no fixed rule that states you need to use “th” with any number for a date. We frequently write dates as 15 May.
Hi Liz,
Thank you for your amazing selfless efforts.
I would like to know, is it possible or appropriate to make notes and then write the answers in computer based IELTS too? (Based on your video on Listening tips: tip -19)
You won’t have time to do that. In the paper based test, you have 10 mins to transfer your answers onto the answer sheet after the recording has finished. You do not get 10 mins in the computer based test. You get only 2 mins. You are supposed to type your answers directly into the computer – the 2 mins is then for checking spelling.
Hi dear liz
I would like to say that i am so happy that i found your useful website and i should say thank you so much for this such a great site
