Useful practice and tips for IELTS Listening Diagram Labelling Questions. IELTS listening diagrams can come in any section of the IELTS listening test. You will be presented with a visual diagram requiring you to either label parts of the diagram or complete notes in the diagram. It is important that you prepare for this type of IELTS listening question. Please note that the lessons below are not tests, they are practice lessons for IELTS listening diagrams.
ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR IELTS LISTENING DIAGRAM QUESTION
Take your time to read and understand the tips below. It can feel overwhelming to see a visual diagram in your listening test. You don’t have much time to absorb the illustration and prepare questions. So, the more you get used to diagrams in IELTS listening, the better.
- Title: Always notice the heading/title of the diagram. This gives you valuable information to understand the content.
- Details: Don’t get lost in trying to understand every detail of the diagram – you won’t have time. So, spot the keywords and notice which part of the diagram they relate to. IELTS do fill their listening tests with lots of information that isn’t required for answers. This is to test your ability to filter meaning and language in order to focus on your task.
- Questions:
- Note completion – often the questions require you to fill in the gap of a note or sentence. In this case, the other words in the notes will help you understand the type of answer you are looking for, such as a noun, verb, adjective, number etc.
- Empty Gaps – you must just have an empty gap relating to a part of the diagram with no extra words to help you. This usually indicates the name of that particular part of the illustration.
- Location: Notice where the questions are located and what order they come in. The questions will follow the order of the recording, but be placed in different places within the diagram.
- Answers: They will come in order. You must spell the word correctly.
- Instructions: Notice how many words or numbers you are allowed for your answer.
- Keywords: The diagram will contain keywords that are already labelled – pay attention to them. They will help you understand the recording and keep your place in the diagram.
- Always be ready to move on to the next question. It’s easy to lose your place in the recording, particularly when you are looking at the diagram as well as listening. This really is a multi-tasking listening test.
- Guess: If you are not sure about an answer, don’t leave it empty – guess. Your guess might be right.
Diagram Language Tips for Listening
Diagrams are visual and this means you will learn language which relates to the location of things in the diagram. Below are some examples, but you can learn many more from the transcripts for the recordings below. Always use the transcripts after you finish a lesson to enlarge your vocabulary.
- at the top / at the bottom / on the side (of)
- to the left / on the left side / to the right / the right side / either side / both sides
- behind / next to / opposite / adjacent to / in front of
- above / on top of / below / underneath / upside down / the right way up
- the center / the periphery / the focal point / inside / outside
Often (not always) the person speaking will indicate when they are about to speak about the diagram. For example, they might say:
- if we look at the diagram
- looking at the illustration
- as you can see by the visual representation
IELTS LISTENING DIAGRAM PRACTICE LESSON
Listening Practice Lesson 1
As you see, this lesson contains two types of questions. It is normal to get two or more types of questions in one section of your IELTS Listening Test. The first type of question is Sentence Completion and the second is a practice of the IELTS Listening Diagram Labelling question. The recording will not tell you when to move from one question to another – you must listen and be ready to move at the right time.
This is a challenging lesson with complex language and topic.

ANSWERS & TRANSCRIPT
Please click below to reveal vocabulary, transcript and answers:
VocabBuilder- plunge = dive, decent
- vast = enormous
- plain = large area of flat land without obstacles such as large rocks
- core = centre
- crust = hard outer layer of something
- seismometer = an instrument that measures movement such as earthquakes
- orbits = circles (vb)
- pointers = clues
- circular = round
- deploy = move into position
The US space agency Nasa has landed a new robot on Mars, otherwise known as the Red Planet. after a dramatic seven-minute plunge to the surface., The Insight probe aims to study the world’s deep interior, and make it the only planet – apart from Earth – that has been examined in this way. Insight is now sitting on a vast, flat plain, close to the Red Planet’s equator. This will be the first probe to dedicate its investigations to understanding Mars’ interior. Scientists want to know how the world is constructed – from its core to its crust.
Looking at the functions of the Insight probe shown on the diagram, we can see that at the top there is a robotic arm which places instruments such as the seismometer on the planet’s surface. Attached to the arm is an instrument monitoring camera. On the main body of the probe there are sensors for both temperature and wind as well as a rise antenna. This measures the movement of Mars’ North Pole as it orbits the sun giving pointers about the iron-rich centre of the planet and hopefully more information about the composition and size of the planet’s core. On either side of the main body of the probe are two large circular solar panels which were deployed immediately on landing to operate its systems and warm equipment in the sub-zero temperatures on the planet . To delve deep into the ground and measure the planet’s temperature, there is a heat flow probe that will penetrate to a depth of 5m or 16ft.
- INTERIOR
- EQUATOR
- CRUST
- ROBOTIC ARM
- TEMPERATURE WIND
- It is not necessary to use a comma – punctuation is not required in IELTS listening answers. Although using a comma is still acceptable.
- Writing the word “and” would make the answer incorrect for two reasons: 1) there is a word limit of max two words 2) the word “and” is already given in the diagram and cannot be part of the answer.
- Both words are necessary for one point. There are no half points.
- SOLAR PANELS
- You must have the “s” on panels or the answer will be marked wrong.
- You cannot write “circular solar panels” because that is three words and the limit is two words. Also the word “circular” is purely descriptive to help the reader identify the solar panels on the diagram – it is not a word that makes up the compound noun.
- 5 16
- You must have both numbers for one point. If one number is wrong, the whole answer is marked wrong.
- See above about using commas.
- You should not put “m” or “ft” or use brackets () with the numbers because that is already given on the diagram. Your task is to write down what is missing.
- Note that the instructions for questions 1-3 and the instructions for 4-7 are not the same. Please check them again about the limit for numbers written in answers.

Hey Liz,
thank you so much for all your help! One friend of mine gave me the advice of listening to you, because it helped her so much for her IELTS test. Now, I am also doing my preparations for this test. I am happy about your help, too! I also have bought two of your e-books 🙂
There is only one point, that confuses me and maybe you can help me. Its about the listening tests. In this example on this website you wrote your answers completely in capital letters and you have mentioned it in one of your videos. However, yesterday I did a training about soil and had to write down e.g. Subsoil, Topsoil etc. Maybe you know this Image. The answers given were subsoil and topsoil without a capital letter and I also found a table as an example in which you had to fill in words as titles in specific columns but these answers were also written without a capital letter. Now I am really afraid of losing all my points just because I thought there should have been a capital letter for the nouns in the same column of the table when they are working as kind of a `title´. It was the British Council webpage but I cannot find the examples right now. Maybe you know the soil-picture-example with the different layers… I would have written the answers with a capital letter. Alternatively, you said, that we can just write everything in capital letters than it should be also alright?
Thank you a million times again!!
All the best
Anna
If you go to this page: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/teach-ielts/teaching-resources/videos/listening You’ll see advice to teachers about IELTS. This page explains that while spelling is marked, the use of capital letters is not. This means spelling is either right or wrong. But the use of capital letters plays no part in marking.
Thank you a million times <3
In the below question does the answer has to follow the order of options given or the order in which speaker has spoken those words should be taken into account?
Which three examples of space junk are mentioned by the speaker
21.___
22.___
23.___
A)Cans
B)tanks
c)plates
D)screws
F)paint
G)satellites
H)rackets
For questions where you choose from a list, the options in the list can appear in any order.
Hi, Liz. Good day! I have a question about listening test. Can we also read the transcript while listening to the recording on the actual test?
As you can see from my website, I only provide transcripts with the answers, not with the questions. In the real test, you won’t get the transcript or answers. The reason practice tests and practice lessons generally provide the transcript can be understood on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-listening-transcripts/. Also please go to the main listening page for more information: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-listening/
Hey, Liz,Thanks for your preparations for us to pass the IELTS.
Now I got some problems about improving my English listening skill.
May be my English listening is poor.
When i face to these qustions, it’s difficult for me to understand what you said in this practice.
Therefore, i want to know what should i do firstly?
To increse my vacabulary at first?
May I have some suggerstions from you? Thank you so much!
You start preparing for the IELTS test and developing understanding of the test when your English is at the level you need for your score. If your English is only band 4 and you want to get band 6 or 7 in your test, you will focus on English, not IELTS. As soon as you feel your English is strong enough, then you focus on IELTS skills.
Hello Liz!
Thank you for your mock tests. i’m taking my exam in December (computer ver) so I have some questions about how to type answers… It would be great if you can help!
1. In CD, when I have to write 2 words in one space, do I need to use comma or just write (for ex) cat dog, or cat, dog ?
2. If I have a big number, such as 657971, do I need to use comma (657,971)?
3. For dates, what is the correct way to write? Do we use / (22/10/1997) or . is ok too (22.10.1997)?
Thank you in advance!
1. You don’t need punctuation. Just make sure the two words and clear to read: cat dog
2. It’s best to put a comma with large numbers so that the number as we do that in English
3. The date can be written any way. We use both options

hello liz,
I have a question regarding Listening format.
I see British Council still gives us an example question in one of its practice tests.
https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/take-ielts/prepare/free-ielts-practice-tests/listening/section-1
Can you please let me know if the format changed for both British Council and IDP ? If so, why do I see an example question here?!
The example is given there for your benefit. It isn’t given in the actual test. The example was removed from all IELTS tests a couple of years ago. If you are worried about it, you can get this confirmed at the IELTS Official FB page. Whether you take the test at the British Council or IDP, it makes no difference at all because neither of them actually write the tests – they just run them.
Hello liz thanks alot for this i’ve found your website really helpful and im glad i came across you… please i have a few questions, will a transcript be provided during the exams for the listening part as you’ve provided as well and again how can i get your app i’ve been seeing reviews that your app was helpful so im a bit confused is it this website or theres another apllication again
You will see that I only give the transcript with the answer. I do not provide a transcript with the listening exercise. In the real test, you won’t get access to the transcript. I provide it with the answers to help you develop your English and IELTS skills. My app is mainly a gateway to this website. However, it does have a short quiz to test your understanding of the test format for each part of the IELTS test and that is useful to do. You can find it on google play store for android.
Hi, Liz. Thanks for all the tips given, you’re my saviour. However, I have some doubts, can I write down the synonym of the answer in the Listening test section?
No, you must write the precise word or words you hear – not your interpretation or alternative words.
Thank you so much Liz. Your channel has been very helpful. God bless you richly.
I’m glad it was useful 🙂
Dear Liz,thank you for the good job…in this exercise, the instructions stated not more than 1 word and/or a number
Actually that is not correct. This listen practice lessons has two sets of questions. Each set of questions has their own instructions and their own word limit. Check again. Always make sure you are reading the instructions for each set of questions – this is the same with the real IELTS test.
Ty Liz ….It’s really helping me a lot in my preparations by looking at your sessions and studying via it , has given me an ease n joy to learn….I have scored full marks .
Great to hear you are benefiting from my site 🙂
Thanks for the incredible lessons Liz.
I have one question about this diagram, though: in the 6th question, the empty box points to a *single* solar panel, so it seems like the test is asking to write the name of that specific part. For this reason, I wrote “solar panel”, even though I knew that the recording said “panelS”. <
How can one know what to write in this situation?
Your answer must come from the audio, not from what you think is should be. Just write down what you hear without changing it.
Thanks Liz , but it seem like the second answer came before the first.
The answers come in order. Listen to the recording again and also read the transcript at the same time – this is the best way to check your answers when you have finished a listening exercise.
Good day to you I really appreciate your work, please would like to know if transcript would be included in the real test?, am not sure listening to the audio once is enough
As you can see from my lessons, I provide the transcript with the answers. By reading the transcript, you can find the answers which is why I give them together on my website. I do not present the questions with the transcript. If I did that, it would turn the listening test into a reading test. So, the answer to your question – “No, you won’t be given the transcript in your real IELTS test.” You will be given the question paper and you will be able to listen to the recording only once. You can’t control the recording – you can’t pause it or replay it.
The answer for number one question, could it also pass as “deep interior”

Hi Liz, thank you for the practice exercises.
Question says: “No more than one word and/or number” however for answer 4 & 6 its 2 words.(Solar panels, Robotic Arm) can you please clarify how i can not be confused with this!!
Also, Does the computer/examiner mark wrong if i dont use the capital or small letters accordingly when answer still is correct)
Examples:
can i write solar Panels/Solar panels/Solar Panels/solar panels ???which answer will be marked wrong?
OR
robotic Arm/Robotic Arm/Robotic arm/robotic arm??? Which answer will be marked correct & wrong?
You need to read the instructions again. There are different instructions for different sets of questions. Always pay more attention to look for instructions. You can use or not use capital letters as you wish in the listening test.
Hello mam,
I was surprised when I am listening, first time i got confused, second time little bit ok, 3rd time understanding slowly,4th time i got finally, I observed here that is accent. If i get clear pronunciation I’ll do easily but have to catch accent first how to pronounce. Any Thank you for such a good work and applicable.
It’s important to practise listening to different accents. You can do this by listening to news channel and watching documentaries. In IELTS listening, there are usually different accents on the recording.
Hey Liz thanks alot
Listening needs alot of practice and concentration I could barely get anything on the IST and and 2 Nd reading till I did the 3rd round
do I have to post a comment everytime I want to practice ?
No, you comment when you want to. As you can see, you can use the pages without leaving a comment.

hello Liz,
Thanks from your Tips,Information and Examples. They are really helpful.
Thank you liz that was so helpful
Hi Liz, Thank you very much for sharing the practice questions. There is one thing that I want to clarify. In tip no.(5), it says answers will come in logical orders. But the answer for No (2) which is equator comes before the answer for No (1). Could you please clarify on that?Thank you very much
If you look carefully, you’ll see that the answer to number 1 comes before the answer to number 2:
“The Insight probe aims to study the world’s deep interior, and make it the only planet – apart from Earth – that has been examined in this way. Insight is now sitting on a vast, flat plain, close to the Red Planet’s equator.”
Hi Liz, this is my first time to answer listening practice test. I find it hard specially when you dont listen carefully the pronunciation. I have 2 wrong answers from 1-7.
1. Deep interior
2. Equator
3. Crust
4. Robotic arm
5. Temperature, wind
6. Circular panels
7. 5, 16
Thank you Liz, this was really helpful
Thank you very much liz!
This was helpful…I’ll work on my weaknesses.
Thanks Liz
HI Liz
i cannot see the another questions like question 1 and 2 and 3 and ,where is it inside the diagram
Yes. There are numbers and sentences to complete inside the diagram.
Hi liz. Your work is as good as your beautiful voice.
Thankyou
That’s really sweet. Thank you 🙂
Hello Liz,
The instruction said “not more than one word” is ‘robotic arm’ and ‘solar panels’ not 2 words each? Or was it a typo error. Please look at the instruction on the Mars insight probe. Thanks, you have been pretty helpful, eagerly waiting for a feedback
Are you referring to questions 1-3 or 4-7? As you see, there are two different sets of questions with two different instructions. It is important that you pay attention to these details in the real test.
Hi Liz… You are like a torch to those who found a path in the Dark. Your web-site is an one stop solution for anyone who is striving for IELTS. You great videos, highly enriched website with tips and guidance & advises are more than I can’t just explain through my words. It’s a great work that you do to bring change in peoples lives.
I wish your good health and all the very best Liz….
I am preparing for the test next month. Hoping to achieve my desired score. Wish me good luck.
I wish you lots of luck in your test !! Remember, the more you understand about the test, the better prepared you will be. Thank you for your kind message 🙂
Thanks a lot Liz
You’re so good in what you do and it’s really helpful. Let me now work hard to make you proud. Love from Precious
Mam thanks for your resources which are extremely helpful in many ways . I have one question regarding writing answers in capital letter ,is it fine to write listening answers in capital and rest both writing and reading in small letter ? I have exam tomorrow
I don’t know what you mean by small letters for writing. Your writing should contain both small and capital letters for your task 1 and task 2 – you are being marked on your ability to use capital letters appropriately. However, it’s fine to change between listening and reading. Although I would recommend all capitals for both listening and reading.
Do we get a written Transcript in the exam for the listing module?
The listening test is purely listening. It is not listening and reading. No transcript. You should use transcripts for analysing your problems when training for the test.

In the real test, the speed of the audio will be of similar pace or it will be slightly slow? As I am missing some parts when I write an answer.
To get to know the real IELTS listening test, go to the BC website and do their free test online. You can also buy the IELTS Cambridge test books from 1 to 14. The most recent is 14. They are all real IELTS tests.
Hi, Liz, if there are two answers to a single question for instance: Sarah owns a school bag and a notebook.
School bag, notebook are correct answers to question 1. How do we write this answer in the answer sheet. Should a comma be used in between or a / ?
If you use a word, it would mean you are putting that word into the answer. That would becomes part of your answer. Are you sure you would add the word “a”? You do not need punctuation for listening answers. If the answer is two words, write two words. If it is three, write three.
My question is if two or three answer are required to one question , how do i write that in the answer sheet?
Let me know which of the following two are correct?
1. Notebooks, school bags
2. Notebook/ school bags
You don’t need to use any punctuation for listening answers.
No more than one ward that means my answer is one word only
So solar panels are two words
Please clear that
Thank you
This means you didn’t pay attention to the instructions. Look again at the instructions for the relevant question.

No more than one word and/or a number is what is given in the instruction so how come the answer to number 4 is “ROBOTIC ARM” ?

I find the same answers as per the “word count” theory. For instance, here 4th answer should be ARM instead of ROBOTIC ARM as word demand is only ONE. Also for the 6th answer every reply came as SOLAR PANEL or CIRCULAR PANEL, but it should be only PANEL…. @liz
I’m glad you mentioned this. The answers are all correct. The problem is that you didn’t notice that the instructions changed when the question type changed. The first three questions have one set of instructions and the next questions for the diagram labelling have completely different instructions:
“Questions 4 – 7
Complete the diagram below using no more than two words and/or numbers.”
This is precisely how it will be in your real test. Always look out for the instructions. Instructions are not given per section, but per question type.
