IELTS Essay Ideas: Is Art a Waste of Time?

Art is a common topic to get in IELTS writing task 2. Below is a sample essay question with ideas.

While some people think that art if an important subject for children to study, others think it is a waste of time.

Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Ideas

Art is Useful

  • art is a means of expression
    • children need to learn to express their thoughts and feelings
    • it is often easier for young children to draw pictures than to express complex feelings in words
  • art is a creative form
    • creative thinking should be developed
    • creative thinking is beneficial later in life

Art is A Waste of Time

  • there are other more important subjects that would benefit children for their future life
    • the importance of technology, sciences and languages
  • studying art does not lead to a successful career
    • most artists struggle to make a living from selling their art

Opinion

  • art is a valuable subject but should not be a main focus on any curriculum or detract from other more important subjects
    • having a balance of subjects is the best way to help children develop a balanced character in life

        hi liz, is that book available now. because i have to appear for exam on 2nd feb. I am nervous, and i dont know why, maybe reading is my greatest fear, as my scores are not consistent. Sometimes i get more than 35 and sometimes below 20. Kindly give an advice how to be more focused.

      There are two words which you need to learn:
      1) The arts
      This relates to art and other skills which reflect human creativity and expression such as dancing, threatre, video making, design etc
      2) art
      This relates to painting, drawing and sculpting. It is usually something created with hands or brushes and involves an image or picture being formed. This is a general definition.

    Hi Liz, I’m from Venezuela but I’m living in Saudi Arabia. Although i use English at work I’m afraid to take the IELTS exam. I can’t afford to enroll a course. But i really want to have this IELTS certification. Could you please help me? im clueless, i dont know how to start this process.

    If art is a waste of time?, art is what makes the world go by, I am an Spanish Spoken English Teacher, who lives in Uruguay,I do get involved in whatever , remote art courses for adults, which make me feel in Heaven
    By the way, I am currently doing one course for THE MOMA, which is excellent, demanding but challenging, we deal in turns with painters such as Frida Kalho,Diego Rivera, Pable Picasso,Vincent Van Gogh, Toulouse Lautrec and many other
