It is a common to be asked to fill in a form for Section 1 in IELTS listening. It is also the easiest type of question in the listening test. In Section 1, there are two speakers exchanging information on a social topic. It is often a phone conversation.
Check what type of information you need to listen for and be careful of traps. Common traps are when the answer is given and then changed by one of the speakers.
This is a practice listening for filling in forms and is useful for IELTS practice.
IELTS Listening Form Completion Practice
This is a typical example of a Form Completion Question that appears in IELTS Listening Section 1. In section 1, you will hear two speakers. This section is based on a social context, such as booking a course, in a restaurant or in an office. Get ready for more than one voice and different accents.

TranscriptHello, this is the Oxford Orientation Summer Course booking office. How can I help you?
I’d like to book a place on a summer course this summer.
Certainly, let me take some details and then I’ll reserve a place for you. What is your full name?
It’s Maria Bueno.
So that’s Maria Beno – BENO?
No, actually it’s BUENO.
When were you born?
I was born on September 12th, 1985.
And which country do you come from?
I’m from Spain.
Well, we’ve got two different courses this summer. We’ve got the orientation for art history and museums and also one for photography. Which one would you like to book for?
The latter, please.
And is that just the one place for the photography course?
Yes, that’s right.
The course you’re interested in runs twice this summer, from June to July and again from August to September. Which one suits you best?
I think the August to September.
That’s fine. Just a few more details and then we’re done. The accommodation we offer on the course is all shared so you can choose from a shared room, a shared flat or a shared house.
Oh definitely not the shared room. I’d prefer the shared flat if you have one.
OK. What I need now are your flight details and also your email address.
Well, I’m coming on Iberia Lines flight IB316 arriving on July 29th. And my email address is m.bueno@gmail.com.
Well, that’s you booked then for a summer course starting in August. Is there anything else I can do for you?
No, that’s all. If you could just email me confirmation of my booking, that’s would be great.
I will do. Thank you. Goodbye.

Hey Liz,
Can we write the answer to the 2nd question as below ?
12th September 1985
Yes, that’s fine.
Hello, Liz!
Thank you for the practice test. I have completed it successfully, however there is an issue I’ve encountered a lot during online practice tests, it is that I am unsure how detailed or specific my answers must be. For example, the person has said that “the total charge for a service would be around 950 pounds”, as the pounds symbol is already there, and by the instructions I may write no more than two words, I wrote “around 950” as my reply. Afterwards, it showed that the answer was “950”, hence marking my answer as wrong. I am confused as it is not really wrong, and how should I know how specific my answer should be? Or should I not worry about it as the examiners will still re-check the answers in the real scenario?
Thank you in advance!
Your aim is always to give a precise word or number. This means if the answer requires a number, you don’t need to add extra information that isn’t necessary. For example, if the answer was “university bookshop”, but you wrote only “bookshop” the answer would be wrong because it is a specifical kind of bookshop, a university bookshop. But if the recording said “interesting bookshop” the word “interesting” does form part of the noun so we wouldn’t include it in the answer.
Thank you Liz for your practice exercises. I am noting my mistakes which is helpful to me. I had 7/8 and missed on question 7. I got the flight number right but added the date to it which made it wrong. I will keep practicing to improve.
Thank you.
Keep going! You’re going the right way when you notice your mistakes and learn from them 🙂
Thank you for making such useful material.
You’re welcome 🙂
mam I determined to write all my answers in capital and in the voice for emailID they said, use small for it. can it effect in exam if I write everything capital and one small.
You can write using all capital letters unless stated otherwise in the audio in which as that particular answer would be a lower case.
Dear Liz, for the computer delivered test, do I have to simultaneously type answers on the computer while listening? Can I get a sheet or paper where I can write the answer and later type in the answer section? And how much time would I have after each section to type answers on the screen?
Unfortunately, your answers must be put directly into the computer as you hear them. Not all questions will require typing. Some will be to tick boxes, some to drag the right word into place. Go to the IELTS website and try some of their questions on the computer based platform. At the end of the computer listening test, you will not have 10 mins to transfer answers, you’ll get just 2 mins to check answers that are already in the computer.
Thanks Liz! i thought that voice was familiar 🙂
🙂
From Sudan , Africa Many thanks for your blog.
My question is, How many words is the Email address ?
I mean like the one mentioned above (m.bueno@gmail.com)
Is it counted one word ??
It is one word. There are no spaces between the words or letters.
Your Spanish accent is terrific
Haha 🙂
Hello Liz,
Is it possible to write all my answers in capital letters if I choose to?
Thanks
Sure. It is recommended to use all capital letters for reading and listening.
Thank you, I think I’m making progress
I answered the second question as 12/09/1985. Will this answer be considered correct or is there a specific format in which a date has to be written.
Thanks for the great blog and all the help provided by you for IELTS prep.
It’s fine.
Hi Liz,
As it is recommended to write our answers in all CAPITALS, does this also apply to the answer with the email address? Or we could we write the email address in lower case i.e m.bueno@gmail.com and the rest of the 7 answers in this practice in CAPITALS?
Please Help!
Thanks!
xx
If the recording states “lower case” or any similar paraphrase, you cannot ignore this and you must write it exactly as you are told to write it.
Hi Liz,
Hearty Thanks first of all! Kindly advise me here.
If the email address has been paraphrased to be in lower case in the recording, I hope we ought to go with the lower case spelling. But is it fine to have all other 7 answers to be in CAPS and for 8th be in LOWER case? Will this case be considered to be fine?
Thanks in advance! 🙂
You can write all answers in upper case unless the speaker specifically says lower case – in which case you use lower case for that question.
Hello Liz,
Thank you for making this site.
How can I download the listening ?
I’ve visited your account in soundcloud but nothing’s there on the list.
please help.
thanks
My listening audios and all other materials are not for downloading – they are to be used by streaming online.
Hello Liz,
I hope you are recovering well.
I wanted to ask if we could write all the answers in CAPITAL, and by doing so avoiding any capitalization mistakes. Is it allowed..? I have come across a few test takers have done so, and got a band score 9. What would you recommend..?
Thanking you in advance.
Ashish
It is recommended to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS FOR BOTH LISTENING AND READING ANSWERS.
m.bueno@gmail.com Isn’t this more than three words and/or numbers?
It is one word – it an email add.
God will give more wisdom and knowledge from his Heaven ,because according to the standared of students God really has given his grace for you, mam.
I wrote the b capital in her name in the email like m.Bueno@gmail.com
Is that fine?????
You can choose ALL CAPS or no caps.
Alryt…..Thank u so much
From the bottom of my heart*

My result(s) – A+ for me.
Thanks Liz and more powers!
Hi Liz! Firstly, I would like to thank you and praise for your accurate work- the best I’ve ever seen! It’s helping me a lot, I’m very very grateful.
Now, below follow my doubts list about this listening test: (Should it be considered as a right if I write down like this?)
2- 12th Sept 1985
4- photography course
5- Aug – Sept
Many thanks
Adriana
Answer 2 and 5 would be marked correct. Answer 4 would be wrong. They are asking for the subject. The subject is not “photography course” the subject is “photography”. If someone is asked “What do you study at university”, people do not say “history course”, they just give the subject “history.
hi Liz,
In question 2 can i write 12 September 1985 instead of September 12 1985. Are there commas required
Yes, you can write the date that way. No, you don’t need commas.
thank you 🙂
Hello Dear Liz,
I like your Spanish accent 😁
Many thanks for helping us.
Thais
🙂
Teacher Liz, your blog helps me so much. The way you teach it is so easy to understand. Thank you very much.
Which accent is best for IELTS.
You can use any accent as long as your pronunciation is easy to understand.
Hello Liz,
Can I write the answer for 3rd question as ‘Spaniard’ ?
Thanks
Renjith
It isn’t usual to say that in English when filling in a form.

Hi Liz,’
For part 4, should the answer start with the capital letter, Photography – since it refers to a noun in this case ?
Best Regards,
Dhruv
https://ieltsliz.com/liz-notice-2015-2016/
yes. you can use it.
Oh I remember Liz is on break…
So any one else is there to help me plz…
Thanx
Hi liz,
I have a querry about some patterns…for e.g In blank 5 ….I wrote Aug-Sept instead of full names is that OK????
Good day Liz,
I just took an exam today.
The instruction was one word and a number
Fill in the blank
Birthday: 24-Aug-1979
will this answer be accepted?
That is two numbers so the answer would be wrong. However, if the instructions were “one word and numbers” (plural), it would be right.
All the best
Liz
It should’ve been just 24 August or something I guess. But Liz knows for sure.
Hi Liz,
Can I write the date of birth 9/12/1985?
Yes, you can write the date any of the usual ways.
Liz
Answer number 3 is absolutely weird. I get that nationality is Spanish not Spain, of course. But you have been repeating all the time that you have to write down what you hear. So how come? This is exactly the opposite, you’re writing down something based on your logic.
Another thing, question number 2 – is 12 September 1985 correct or do I have to write down September 12, 1985?
In this case, it is not possible to use the word given which is Spain. You can write dates using a comma or using American style as you wish.
Liz
Exactly, often times she has been telling us “write exactly what you hear”, but look at it now.
HI Liz
If I write Sept 12, 1985
Is that ok?
Coz it’s the same way the speaker is telling.
What about these
September 12th, 1985
And September 12, 1985
This comma is confusing me
Kindly help
You can use a comma or not. You can use “th” or not. They are all correct.
Liz
Hi Liz,
If my answer in question #2 was 12 Sep. 1985, will that be still correct?
Thanks
I can’t say for sure. Hopefully yes. It is better to write “Sept”.
All the best
Liz
Hi Liz,
Firstly I would like to thank you for the job you are doing for all of us.
I took my IELTS back in July. My scores were: listening 7.5, reading 7.0; writing 7.0; speaking 7.5. I need a score 8 for my listening test. I am very nervous as tomorrow is my re-testing.
I am going through all your practise tests. I have question on this particular test. If I would write the date of birth in UK version as 12/09/1985 would it be still correct? As on the answers it shows 09/12/85 which is US version of writing the dates.
Thank you.
Regards,
Lara
Yes, it would still be correct. Good luck!
Liz
Hello Liz,
I have written September 12th 1985. Is it correct?
This is without comma after 12th.
Thanks
Akriti
You don’t need a comma.
Liz
Hi Liz

See this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-reading-tips-how-can-i-improve-my-score/
All the best
Liz
Thank you Liz for the free tips and lessons. In the listening test, I decided to write my answer all caps. However, in your practice test there’s an email address. Is it still a correct answer if i wrote it M.BUENO@GMAIL.COM? Also, if my answer in the date will be 12TH SEPTEMBER, 1985.Is it still right? Hope you’ll answer my all caps concerns. Thank you.
Sure, it’s fine.
Liz
