Transcript for MC Listening Turtles

You can use the transcript in 3 ways when reviewing your answers:

  1. You can use it to improve your awareness of your listening ability.
  2. You can use it to improve your pronunciation.
  3. You can use it to review your answers and see which keywords you missed.
  4. I’ve added the audio below so you can read and listen at the same time:

The volunteer program is aimed at helping to conserve and protect the population of Olive Ridley turtles in Costa Rica, although other species of turtles are also involved. The program is run at Ostional beach which has been an active conservation area for the last 40 years. Volunteers can sign up for any length of time from 2 to 12 weeks. All volunteers will be housed with local families near the beach – do not expect luxury, this is basic at best . Have your dictionary ready because English is not usual in local families. It is possible to sign up as a group or just as an individual without prior experience but we do have an age requirement of over 18. A health check and police check will also be required. The main involvement in this program is with recording data, helping with tagging, removing debris from the beach to ensure clear passage for adult and baby turtles and also to assist in egg relocation. This is a unique experience for anyone interested in turtles and conservation.

Answers to Questions 1-5

  1. C
    1. “is aimed at helping to conserve and protect the population of Olive Ridley turtles in Costa Rica, although other species of turtles are also involved”
    2. The above part of the sentence shows that it was not exclusively Olive Ridley turtles because other types of turtles were in involved. This means if you continued to listen, you find that answer B is not possible.
    3. Also this part of the sentence does not state that ALL turtles (100% of all turtle species) were involved. This means the answer cannot be A.
  2. B
    1. “Volunteers can sign up for any length of time from 2 to 12 weeks.”
    2. This means that option A is not possible because there is definitely a time limit. And option C is not possible because the minimum time is 2 weeks, not 1 week.
  3. C
    1. “All volunteers will be housed with local families near the beach – do not expect luxury, this is basic at best”
    2. This means that it is not luxury (A). Also it is not B. Option is there to make sure you are not trying to match words ie the word “best”.
  4. C
    1. “It is possible to sign up as a group or just as an individual without prior experience but we do have an age requirement of over 18.”
    2. The keyword in the question is “MUST” . This means you are listening for a requirement of the programme.
    3. A is not the answer because it is not a requirement to be an individual – groups are also possible.
    4. B is not the answer because experience is not a requirement.
  5. A
    1. “The main involvement in this program is with recording data, helping with tagging, removing debris from the beach to ensure clear passage for adult and baby turtles and also to assist in egg relocation.”
    2. The answer A can only be recognised if you are good with paraphrasing. The word “rubbish” is a synonym of “debris”. Also “to clear the beach” is a paraphrase for “removing debris to ensure a clear passage”.
    3. B is not the answer because the recording shows that eggs are relocated (not baby turtles). This option is checking to make sure you are not trying to match words “relocation”.
    4. C is not possible because at no time are turtles assisted in being able to move.

  1. Chefor Roland says

Thanks liz i got all the answers

  2. Wale Adejoro says

Thank you so much, This was very educative, I missed only number 1. Thanks for the explanation. I hope to do better in the subsequent practice questions before my test date

  3. Yaay got all of ’em right! The topic is also very nice :> This bit “The answer A can only be recognised if you are good with paraphrasing.” stroked my ego a little bit, haha. Thanks!

  4. Thank you. This is very helpful. I like marine biology and admire the Turtles. I got all the questions correct.

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed the topic. I really want people to learn IELTS skills, but I also want them to enjoy learning beyond that and connect with issues facing this world whilst also focusing on English.

  5. Catherine says

Hi Liz, hopefully you’re always in good health.. thank you so much for the materials and exercises you’ve provided, they are incredibly helpful πŸ™‚ I wanna ask if it’s okay for me to focus on studying all the exercises you’ve given here than practicing the original test (cambridge book) ?

    • My practice lessons are to gain awareness of questions types, develop skills and gain confidence. But they are not practice tests, they are lessons. My lessons also have answers which are often explained to help you understand what you are doing right and what you still need to work on. But you still need to practice with authentic test materials from the IELTS Cambridge tests. You need to get used to the timing, the length and the difficulty level. You should use them for practice and also do them under exam conditions at home so that you get used to the pressure of the exam. So, to answer your question, you ought to use both.

      • Catherine says

Thank you very much for the response and explanation. I will try to combine both. I’ve attempted to work on and study from Cambridge books 16 and 17 for listening. Despite attempting 8 tests, my score remains stuck at 6 or 6.5, at most 7. Are there any tips to increase my band score? Or are there any recommended Cambridge books?

        • All the Cambridge books are test books. One book is the same as the other. They don’t provide tips, explanations, guidance or teaching. They are simply tests. When you use tests as a way to improve, you need to analyse why you got each answer wrong and each answer right. You need to make a list of the mistakes you are making and why you are making them. This way you will start to see a pattern in the answers you are getting wrong. Improving is not just about practice, it’s about analysing. Try that for a while and see what you discover about your techniques and understanding.

          • Catherine says

Okay, thank you so much for your input. I’m currently learning from your practice website as there are some explanations and tips to avoid getting stuck. I’ll also start analyzing the answers I’ve done before working on others. Thank you very much for the knowledge you’ve provided. I’m very lucky and grateful to have found your website. I hope i can make a good progress for my IELTS preparation. Please continue to be kind in teaching us, and may you always be well wherever you are ❀️❀️❀️

But practice isn’t enough, you need to analyse your mistakes, spot paraphrases used, post keywords used – start paying attention to the techniques IELTS use and the techniques you need to pay attention to.

  41. Beulah says

I have a relatively good hang of the listening test.
I’m a new subscriber working to improve my reading scores – hovering around 6.5-7.5 on most exercises – and it’s largely because I struggle with the inferential statements T, F, NG.
Even though I write at my spare time, the requirement for IELTS, as I have come to see is quite different, and I need a lot of work on that before I take my exam in September.
Looking to get all the help I can from here.

    Thank you, Liz.

    Cheers,

    • Check the pronunciation of the word using the audio – it’s a great word to know πŸ™‚ Although “rubbish” can be used as a synonym, it is not a perfect synonym. The word debris does not have to be limited to only rubbish, it can also relate to other things which are naturally occurring rather than man made.
