  8. Alex page says

I had my computer Ielts tests last week and got my results this morning.

    For speaking the questions were as follows;

Part 1 Questions about where I live and what I would like to improve about my area

Part 2 Tell me about someone you wanted to be like when you were younger and why?

Part 3 Most famous and influential people in my country, why are they famous, should other kinds of people be celebrated too and so on.

    Writing

Part 1 – Your friend has asked you to help him find a music teacher for his/her child. Write a letter telling your friend you have found a suitable teacher. Explain why you think they are suitable and advise your friend how to get in touch with the teacher.

Part 2 – Famous people sometimes give their opinions on public topics. Is this a good thing? Explain to what extent you agree or disagree.

I cannot really remember the listening or reading.

I got my results this morning as follows L9 R9 W7.5 S7.5. I am quite disappointed about the speaking as I got an 8 the last time I wroted the Ielts (results have expired hence why I had to write it again) and I consider my spoken English to be very good. However I was quite nervous and fumbled a lot during the part 2.

This blog was very helpful in the build up to the exam. P.S If you are taking the computer based test, try and familiarise yourself with the keyboard first if you can. Especially because of the writing test. The one I was given was quite funny when it came to special symbols like ? β€˜ β€œ. I had never come across a keyboard where typing special characters was not so straighforward and it wasted my time a bit trying to figure them out. In the end I had to change my sentences to dispense with the need for special characters. For example, β€œIn today’s world” became β€œIn the world today”

    Good luck everyone!

  9. Hi Liz,

I will be sitting for my IELTS exam the day after tomorrow and would like to ask you about the use of gender pronoun in Writing Task 2. I have been getting mixed advice. Some say that I should use “he” only, and others told me I should use “he or she”.
Which one is better to use when I am referring to a person (singular) in a hypothetical example? I know I am allowed to use “one” or “their” but sometimes I really need to see gender pronouns.
I give a sample sentence below to make my question more understandable

For instance, when a parent of an employee falls ill, taking 1 week away from work will allow him or her to spend quality time with their parent.

I hope to hear from you before my exam. Thank you so much!

    • Always refer to people in the plural form to avoid this problem. You do not need to talk about one single person when you can refer to people in general.

      • Understood. Thank you for taking your time to reply. I really appreciate it. πŸ™‚

      • Maemoona says

Hi! Sorry to poke in, but could you, please, elaborate through the same example that @sherly has used?

        • The problem was that the example sentence used isn’t correct in English which is why I couldn’t use it to explain my point. How about this:
          A) If an employee falls ill, the time he or she takes off from work enables him or her to spend time with his or her family.
          B) If an employee falls ill, the time they take off from work enables them to spend time with their family.
          C) When employees fall ill, the time they take off from work enables them to spend time with their family.
As you see, Sentence A is messy and definitely should not be used. Sentence B is fine to use. I personally go for Sentence C – refer to people in general.
I hope this helps πŸ™‚ I’m putting together a grammar e-book for writing task 2 at the moment – I’ll include this example if you feel it is useful – let me know πŸ™‚

  11. Hi

I took my computer based test yesterday and here are my questions.

    Speaking:
    part 1 :
General questions about work, reason to choose profession and weather

    part 2:
You are in a public place and you hear someone talk on the phone.
Describe where was this, when was this and what was the person talking about

    part 3;
do you think people behave badly to strangers ?
what should be done with bad behaving people, should you ignore or should they be told about it
what can be done to improve the behavior of people
are people more silent in public than before
why do some people feel uncomfortable while it is silent.

    Writing:
    1. Your landlord wants to increase the rent. Write a letter to him telling him why do you think the rent shouldnt be increased and what will you do if it is increased.

    2. Some people believe that if people are allowed to work after the age of 60, it causes problems. Do you agree or disagree ?

    Hi Liz,
I would like to thank you for your tips on the website, really helped me. The first part of my speaking went very well, but in 2nd part i could only speak for 1:40 around, and struggled to find any content there. I felt the question was pretty tricky, or maybe I should have prepared better. Hope it does not reduce my score. In the essay, I didnt agree or disagree , i just put points on both sides of the argument and proposed it as a decision which depends on the particular type of industry and not a generic one. Please tell me that that it is okay to do that. Fingers crossed for my result !

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ You should aim to speaking for about 2 mins in part 2, but you don’t have to. If you speak only for about 1.5 mins, it is still ok. Your score for fluency (which includes your ability and willingness to speak at length) is also dependant on part 1 and part 3. So, your score will be based on your overall ability in English over the whole test. For your writing task 2 question, if you think retirement age should depend on the industry, it is best to state that in the introduction and explain in detail in the body paragraphs. For example, one body paragraph would explain industries where it is fine to work past the age of 60 and body paragraph 2 would explain when it is not ok. This is called a partial agreement / balanced approach – it is where you neither agree or disagree, but you present a specific view point – you present an “it depends” view point.
Fingers crossed for your results πŸ™‚

  12. Hello Liz, last week I took my IELTS exam on July 6th, 2019. Your website helped me a lot. especially advance writing modules.

    Writing task 1
the graphs show a percentage of sport and culture activities among girls and boys in Australia in 2003

    Writing task 2
Food travels thousands of miles from farm to consumers. some people believe we should buy food from the local farmer to protect the environment and help the local business. do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

    Speaking

    Part 1
    what do you do?
do you love working at your workplace?
(common question relating to work and hobbies)

    Part 2
Describe a famous person that you wished to meet
    – who is the person?
    – where do you know about this person?
    – why do you want to meet this person?
what do you want to tell to this person if you have a chance to meet him/her

I’ve already taken the test 3 times, and I hope this is gonna be my last attempt to get the band score I need. I’m really grateful to able to learn a lot from your website. I regret that why I wasn’t purchased the modules from the first place. The way you explain the modules were really helping me to easy to understand. I just want to give some advice to the IELTS takers, you should bring a jacket because sometimes the test room can be really cold. I didn’t bring my coat last week, it was kinda distracting me when the test started. I kept moving my body to get warm.

    • Thanks for sharing your topics and tips πŸ™‚ Fingers crossed for your results πŸ™‚

      • Hi Liz,
I gave my speaking test today, in the morning. I’m sharing my experience.

        Part 1
What do you do? Work or study?
        Working hours in a week?
What do you like about your work?

Is drinking coffee or tea common in India?
Will you offer coffee to someone at home?
When did you drink coffee last time?

Do you ever watch the sky?
Did you study about stars and planets at school?
Morning or night sky? which one you prefer?
From where do you watch stars during night?

        Part 2
Talk about a person at work or a friend who helped in your life or career?

        How long did you work?
        How they helped you?
        How they influenced you?

And a reason why they are so important in life?
        Follow up question:
Do you often meet this person even now?

        Part 3:
What type of colleagues you find at work place?
What type of colleagues are often preferred?
Why team work is better than individual work?
How should a workplace be in your view?

In the first part of speaking test, I answered about my work at length and used good vocabulary to describe my type of work. I used simple examples and shared my experiences whenever required. And the examiner was smiling through out the discussion. In part 2, I spoke fluently without pauses and tried to cover all that I could. But she stopped me after 2 min and couldn’t cover some part of the question (Liz, will this affect the score?). During last part, first question I took a bit of pause and used fillers ahh and oooh for couple of seconds but picked it up after that. Used a word that we generally use while talking to friends but examiner was kind, smiled at me and asked what does that mean? I explained it using some good vocabulary this time. Test lasted for 11 minutes exactly.

        • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is the rules of IELTS that your part 2 talk takes no more than 2 mins – the examiner must stop you. You do not have to complete the prompts on the card. Fillers are words that are used to fill gaps. “ahh” and “ooh” are not fillers – they are not words, they are sounds. Such sounds lower your score for fluency. Part 3 is time to speak about the world in general, not about your friends, family or yourself.

  13. Hi Liz,
Many thanks to you and your website. Your advance lessons for writing helped me a lot.
I appeared for General IELTS on 6 July in New Jersey, USA.

    Essay
Some parents think its good to have their children mobile phones, others disagree.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

    Letter
You are relocating to a new city. Write a letter to an agent to arrange a house for you and your family.
When and why you are relocating?
What kind of house do you want?

    Speaking
    Part 1
Where do you live? apartment or house?
Which room do you like the most? Why?
    Are you an organized person?
Do you like to plan your day? Why?

    Part 2
Describe a time that you gave an advice to someone.
    Who is the person?
What was the advice that you gave?
What did the person do about the advice?
After part 2 she asked me – do you like to give an advice?

Part 3 – This was all about the advice. I don’t remember all the questions exact but following I felt tricky to answer.

Why do people seek advice from professionals(e.g doctors)?
Have you taken any advice from any professional? When?
Is it important to take advice from professionals? (or adults)
Will people continue to seek advice from professionals in the future? Why?
Why do some people refuse to take good advice?

In part 2, I couldn’t complete 1/2 min so she asked me to tell something more about it. Then whatever I spoke that was a bit of repetition because I was not in the flow.
I think this will affect my score very much.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ In IELTS speaking, you are marked on your language, not your ideas or information. The score is be based on your overall level throughout all parts, not each part in turn.

  14. Hi Liz, I had my exam today in the afternoon. Below ones are the questions the examiner asked me:
    1. What do you do?

Cue card- Describe about a person who has motivated you to achieve goals?

    Part 3- Motivation
    1. What do you think- children should be motivated by their parents/ teachers from their teenage time?
    2. Why being motivated is important?

One thing, she kept interrupted me during answering…. will it gonna affect my band score??
and i was not able to speak for full 2 minutes… completed in approx 1.5 minutes. She asked me if I would like to add and I said no. Will it affect the overall score?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is 100% normal to be interrupted and does not influence your score. If you choose not to give more English, it is your choice. You are marked on the quality of the English you produce and every question is an opportunity to show the examiner your skills.

Liz i want your opinion is it alright that i have mentioned 2 different works of my life in different parts of speaking? What if examiner thinks that i am mentioning contradictory working fields?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ In one part you mentioned what work you do and in the other you mentioned work you used to do (past tense). No problem there.

  21. Hi Liz
I would like to thank you for this great website.
1st of July was my academic computer based test
I will start with writing since many find it difficult.
My personal tips is to write both task 1 and 2 every day in one hour. I find that I need 22-25 min for task 1 I could not do it in shorter time. Task 2 in my opinion needs about 35 min. That’s my way at least
    Speaking was not a surprise
    Everything as you said
Listening is were the problems begin
Time for answer is almost the same is you listen to the audio so the key I use is to write short hand notes but even so time is short. I faced some difficulties with part 3 with the map directions the audio is playing and the speaker is explaing where different shops are located in the park you have to listen and see the map at the same time you have answer. Really no time for notes almost like a race.
Part 4 was a bit easy but tricky.
Reading was as expected one note to consider 1st passage is easy it takes about 15min. Second one a bit harder 20min will be enough. Last one is the hardest it needs 25 min or more. again the passage is written in a way that makes your mind feel lost.

Section 2 – Some shoe museum and various sections in it
Section 3 – Topic – Ventilation systems in work spaces

Section 4 – Topic – History of how map making evolved over time throughout the world
There were around 10 paragraphs each corresponding to a letter A – I.

Matching 1 involved matching “small summaries provided” with the corresponding paragraph(A-I).

    Matching 2
A list of map making aspects invented were given. For example, “This country had the emperor followed by a map-maker at all times”, “This country invented the first maps” …
A list of countries were provided A-I.
    For example, A. China B.Persia …..

The paragraphs occupied whole 2 pages. The questions were in the next 2 pages. I found the last section very difficult because the questions were in a different pages and paragraphs in another. Looking at the question in a page and then flipping over the previous page to read paragraphs made it even more difficult.

General Writing — After getting used to typing for many years, Lost touch with writing long time ago. Ended up spending slightly more time on Task1 than planned. As a result wrote task2 conclusion less than planned. Handwriting turned bad in the last moment.
    Task1

How do you think news reporting changed over time?
With the advent of new technology, news are reported very quickly.
Do you think a channel should publish the news quickly before its competitors or verify the authenticity before publishing? Why do you think so?
Do you think everyone should follow the news daily? why?

Few others that I have talked to on that day mentioned that they were asked on the following topics in Part2
a place that you have recently visited.
    your relationship with your siblings.
a colleague who you liked working with

  26. Hi Liz
I finished all components of academic test yesterday(29th, June,2019), and below were the details of speaking test:
    Part 1:
    Do you work or study?
    Do you like your job?why?
How often do you visit your relatives?
What do you usually when you visit them?
Where did you play when you were a child?
Do you spend more time with your friends or relatives?why?

    Part 2
Describe a person who have interesting ideas or opinions.
    who is he/she?
How did you get to know him/her?
What are some of his/her interesting ideas?
(I answered my late sister, and after the presentation the examiner asked if other people also think she had interesting ideas)

    Part 3
Can you mention a well-known person who has interesting ideas?
Do you think we should spend more time understanding famous people’s ideas?
Do you think we should take time to understand opinions of people from the past?
Speak of your sister, what do you think that makes her ideas interesting?

The examiner was a British lady with similarly posh accent, who was quite considerable(just like you!) and even suggested that I put on my cardigan in case of catching a cold. Due to her friendly manner, I was soon relieved and quickly went into this status. Furthermore, I believe that for a better score in speaking test, you need to calm down and familiarize yourself with the test room atmosphere as soon as possible. Smile more often and try to make eye contact with your examiner. Behave like you are taking with a friend from afar and avoid unnatural actions.

Last but not least, thank you so much for your videos, dear liz! After listening to your class, I directly abandoned lectures taught in my mother tongue which paid too much attention on skills rather than knowledge. Your videos raised my spirit to revise well for IELTS as well as continuing studying English after this test. Thanks againπŸ˜€wish you have a great day!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I’m glad you got a friendly examiner – it makes a lot of difference. I’m also pleased you enjoyed my lessons and will continue to learn English in the future πŸ™‚ One day I hope to start englishliz.com – then I’ll also make video lessons for English idioms, vocabulary, pronunciation etc πŸ™‚

  28. Hello Liz,

I had my exams yesterday (29th June 2019). The Listening, Reading & Writing went quite well. I think I got too nervous with speaking but spoke as well as I could. For Reading, it was actually a practice paper I had done before so that was a plus.
Writing task 1 – A young person is going to start his first day at the office next month. So the question was to write a letter explaining what he will be doing on his first day in the office.
Writing task 2 – Some people think media should be allowed to publicize information on someone’s private life. Some others believe that media should be regulated in this regard. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answers and relevant examples. – my advice here is to be very careful because at first I really misinterpreted the question to be about celebrities in particular but realised in the nick of time πŸ™‚

Speaking – Part 1 – general questions about myself, asked me to describe my house, what my favourite room is. Also asked me about street markets (are they popular in your country? Why do people like street markets? How do you feel about street markets? A place in your country you would like to visit. Why do you want to visit this place?)

Speaking Part 2 – Talk about a famous person (who is not from your country) whom you would like to meet. My main mistake here was to try sticking to the cue card prompts and I really urge anyone reading this not to do it. It really distracts your flow and thinking. I’m a national speaker but I still got stuck here and there because of this. It is only later I realised that not all the prompts need to be talked of.

Important thing to remember is – time flows very fast in LRW. So time management is crucial. Before speaking, it is super important to calm your nerves. That plays a big role in how you fare when the test starts. For writing, I highly recommend using a pencil because you can always erase what you write. Pen tends to get messy. Do alot of practice tests online. It really really helps. Especially for listening. Also guys, the online practice papers are about 5 notches higher in difficulty than the actual. It’s actually not tough if you prepare. I fretted listening and reading but honestly, writing and speaking were tougher. Practice speaking and writing as much as you can πŸ™‚

I will post my results too when I get it. @Liz – your tips were very helpful. I relied on your tips for writing. It helped me alot for last minute preparations. Thank you!

  29. Hello Liz,
I took IELTS (GT) exam recently. (29.06.2019)
for speaking, the examiner asked me following questions
Part1 – about work, what I do, do I enjoy my work, how is different than previous work, etc
Part2 – a game/talent show I used to watch (*what it is, *how people were selected, *why I used to watch it, forgot the last point
Part3 – which sports we used to play in childhood, what sports were played in the past and now (comparison), computer games are bad for children? why leisure time is important? and several other questions related to leisure, sports

    Listening
section 1 – about a trip, all fill in the blanks
section 2 – bookstore map completion, factor matching about book characteristics and name
section 3 – Multiple choices about an assignment topic, question answer
section 4 – invention of a new language lecture note completion

    Reading
    Total 5 passage
first 4 passage was related to exhibitions, overtime information, workplace chair, computer etc arrangement to correct posture, another passage I forgot
last passage about the science of shopping, information about supermarkets section arrangement and several researchers findings.

    writing
Task 1: the letter was about a young person who will join my company next month for work experience. **tell him what work is done in the company **what he/she will do on the first day of work **what items/objects he/she needs to bring
Task 2: some people think media (newspapers) should be allowed to publish personal information, others think that some rules/control should be applied about publishing personal information
P.S: all the information is rough, not word by word but the essence is correct
I hope it will help the people who will soon sit for ielts

        Essay topic:
Some people from poor and rural backgrounds find it difficult to get university education. Universities have to make it easy especially for such groups to get into them. To what extent do you agree or not?

I followed all your valuable tips and advices and was able to answer all the sections in the test well.

Thank You for your great service!!!

    • Hi Liz, thank you for your helpful tips.

  36. M
Introduction questions related to Weather, reading books
    Cue card
describe any tool which you bought for your home when you visit any tourist place.
    when where and why
My question is that…. in my cue card I explained my visit to place then I bought key ring I bought for my mother.

Is this topic correct? or diverted from my topic.. could you please elaborate ..I am worried about my topic.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ You are not marked for being on topic in IELTS speaking. If your talk is close to the topic you were given, it’s fine. Your choice was fine. Your score will depend on the level and range of English you produced in the test.

      • Thanks a ton from my heart..your response is appreciable because you snatched time from your hectic schedule and educting millions of students throughout the world…God bless you and always remain fresh and healthy😊

  37. Hi liz. Thank you for your website that provides many tips.

I had my speaking test yesterday.

Intro questions were on home and social accounts.

    Cue card
Describe a quiz or game show

Follow ups were on Tv shows and games

I did well and give extended as well as relevant answers in part 2 and part 3. However, it seems to me that i did some repition in part 1. Answers were not extended properly. But spoke throughout my speaking. I mean i didn’t keep silent.

Am i able to score 7 bands? What do you think?
How much weighs part 1 in whole speaking?

    Just need your opinion.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Speaking is not marked based on each part. Your score is based on your overall performance. This means if you were nervous in part 1, the examiner will take that into account. If your part 2 and part 3 show that your level of English is, for example, band 7, then you will get band 7 overall. So, it’s all about the examiner judging your real level of English.

  38. 28/6/2019

about home ( where is it? , what is your favorite room?)
about relations ( how may time you visit them, do you prefer relation over friends)

    2nd part.
    The park you have visited
    where is it?
    with whom
    what are you doing there

    3rd part
why people have flower in there garden?
    benefits of having flowers?
what is the best? planting flower or vegetables?

i am sorry, i don’t remember some question in part 3. examiner was very friendly.he kept his smile through out the period.

  43. Thank you Liz for the tips and tricks. My speaking test was on 20th June and writing was on 22nd June.
    Speaking test
    1. Questions about Home ( how is your home like, from how long are you staying there, your favourite room)
    2. Questions about Math (When did you start learning math, are you good at math, do you think everyone needs to learn maths, did you use electronic calculator anytime)
    3. Questions about Garbage and recycling ( what do you when you see people throwing rubbish on streets, why do you they throw? Did you recycle a paper anytime, What do you do to make your city tidy)
    Cue card
Talk about a singer/musical band you know
    Part3
Do you think music producers are giving people good songs or just making huge amount of money?
Do you expect that we will be getting good music in the future?
    Are you good at singing?
Do you think voice is important or the coaching to become a great musician? For this question i said, if one has a great voice, coaching can improvise it otherwise coaching is of no use. So the follow up question is do you mean i cannot bring anyone and make a great musician? I said yes, you cannot. He smiled to that.
    Writing part 1
4 Bar graphs- comparing men and women getting top grades in a specific school and in an average national wide
    Part2
As countries develop, more and more number of people buy own cars and using it. Do you think the advantages for individuals outweigh the disadvantages on environment?

Liz…i did listening and reading well. For speaking i hesitated to begin and took a long gap for 2 questions in part3 and in cue card he waited for 10secs after i finished and asked me a question for what i spoke. Rest all went good.
For Writing, i used appropriate wide vocabulary, complex sentences with connecting words and a proper structure. But i wrote disadvantages as a whole (to common people, to individuals, pollution) but in the question, its given about environment.
And for task1, some of my information is not accurate as i did not have enough time to think and write.
Will that affect a lot? I need 7 atleast in writing and 7.5 overall.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your task 2 writing was about both individuals and the environment. If you deviated from that, it would only affect your score for Task Response which is only 25% of your task 2 marks. Your final score for writing will include task 1 as well. It isn’t possible to predict your scores. Fingers crossed πŸ™‚

  44. Hey,
I took my IELTS GT exam this weekend.
    Speaking questions:
When do you smile the most?
Do you like to smile in pictures?
Can you judge if someone is faking their smile?
    Do you like to read?
Which part of your day engages you more in reading, work or personal time?
Did you like to read in your younger days?

Discussion of 2 minutes about a person you know who like to help people in free time.
    Who is that person?
How do you know this person?
How does he or she help people?

Following this there were questions based on the answers. Most of the questions were about charity and donations.
    Writing test
    task 1
Write a letter to the manager of a restaurant, which is located next to your apartment regarding a repair work you are going to have.
    What is the repairing about
How is it going to affect his restaurant work/customers
    Remedies to handle the problem

    Task 2
Some people prefer activities and lifestyle of hot climates more while others like living in cold climates.
Discuss both the views and give your opinion.

Some points which I noticed about CBT:
listening questions has the option of highlighting the important things but there is not enough time for this.
Copy paste using standard Ctrl C Ctrl V works and can be used in reading to avoid spelling mistakes. Highlighting helps in reading section.
Check for spelling errors in the end as you miss some words while typing. Word count appearing at the bottom is really helpful.

Thanks a lot Liz. You are doing a great work.

  45. Hello Liz!
I took my Academic IELTS today (June 24th).
Listening: it was pretty easy, with lots of T/F/NG questions. Can’t remember very well the topics, but they weren’t complicated.
Reading: It was much more easier than I expected. The last part was the most difficult, it talked about science fiction books and authors. Spending 20 minutes per each section was okay.
Writing: I struggled a little bit with time.
Task 1: two Pie Charts, one of 2008 and one predicting the energy sources that would be used in 2030. (I had watched your video for bars that predict the future so I had more vocabulary). I think this one was my weakest part as I focused on task 2, and did Task 1 when there were just 15 min left
Task 2: New technologies provided machines which replaced workers to do certain physical jobs and tasks. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? In this one I used two times the word β€œfabric” instead of β€œfactory” which I am really concern. Do you think this will afect my mark?
Speaking: I am sitting for it tomorrow!
Thank you for all your advices, you were very helpful! I watched lots of your videos and did plenty of activities from your blog!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Using the wrong word in that way will affect your score for vocabulary only. Your score will depend on how well you did in the rest of your essay. Hope your speaking test went well πŸ™‚

  46. Hi,
    I did my speaking test
    Part 1
About work, benefits of physical activity and so on.
    Part 2
An outdoor sport that you would like to do in the future.
    Part 3
About extreme sports, comparison between men and women..
    About my experience
Part 1 and part 2 I did it well.. I hope so 😊
But part 3 was quite tough… I took time to answer to some questions..

    I have a question mam,
He marked something in his mark sheet which has numbers from 1 -13 or 14
And he wrote 10 near to 9
Was it their way of marking secret score? I am just curious to know..

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ There is no secret way of scoring. You are not given a score for each part. You only get one single final score which is decided at the end of the test. Any numbers written down are related to timing and should be ignored.

  49. Hello Liz,

Many thanks for this website and its contents. It is truly very helpful if one can study well and remember the tips. I had my speaking test today and it went very well, if I say so myself.. πŸ™‚ The examiner kept cutting me off (politely ofcourse), I didn’t get discouraged about this because I had read on your website that this should be expected. The questions asked are as follows:

    Part 1
    1. Let us talk about where (the area) you live. So tell me about how long you have lived there, would you say you have lived there for a long time?

    2. So what do you like about where you live?
    3. What developments would you like to see made in the area you live?
    4. Let us talk about tea and coffee. Do people drink a lot of tea and coffee in your country?
    5. Do people go out to drink tea or coffee?
    6. Have you had tea or coffee today?
    7. Would you invite a friend to drink tea or coffee?
    8. Let us talk about large gatherings. Where do you usually find large gatherings in your country?
    9. How do you feel when in a crowded place or large gathering?
    10. Tell me about the last gathering that you found yourself
    11. Let us talk about festivals. Can you give me examples of festivals celebrated in your country.
    12. Why do you think people don’t celebrate a lot of festivals anymore
    13. Do you think celebrating festivals adds to the tourist attractions in a country?
    14. What would happen if people stopped celebrating festivals in a country?

    Cue card
    1. Talk about a party you recently attended
    2. What the party was for
    3. What you enjoyed about the party
    4. What you will remember about the party

    Part 3
    More questions about parties.
    1. Do you like attending parties?

The questions written above are not verbatim but reflect the gist of the questions I was asked. I recall reading here when you are being truthful, it is easier to speak fluently and be coherent in answering the questions, rather than making up events. So for the questions on festivals, I didn’t have much knowledge about the subject matter, but I quickly remembered that the test itself is to assess my understanding of English language and not the subject. Thus, I was quite confident in answering the questions and even though I started out being nervous, I was able to relax along the way as the examiner was smiling encouragingly too.

I hope to score a good mark i.e. 8 and above and will definitely share the outcome. The rest of the exams are on the 29th so fingers crossed and back to studying the remaining parts of this website.. πŸ™‚

    Thanks again Liz.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It sounds like you were properly prepared – well done. You are right – it is normal to be interrupted and it’s best to just focus on the next question and not worry about it. It’s also correct not to worry if you don’t have knowledge of something – just keep talking about your views or other people’s views etc. It is also correct that it is easier to say the truth than cope with creating a lie in English under exam conditions. I looks forward to hearing about your results πŸ™‚ Good luck in the next part of the test πŸ™‚

    ——-thnku——-

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I’m so glad you had a good speaking test. Good luck on Saturday πŸ™‚

      • examiner always smiles and gives us confidence even we r speaking with mistakes…..I’m not judging u or commenting u…iam just saying as u constantly saying that examiner is smiling and giving confident…..it is his/her job to behave like that….it is like, examiner won’t ignore u or keeping yawning at u or rolling his/her eyes if u say a boring topic or do any kind of mistakes

        • You have completely misunderstood what I have said. I have NEVER said the examiner WILL smile and be encouraging. I have said the examiner is supposed to do that. This is a fact. They are told to have encouraging body language so that people feel comfortable speaking. I have also said again and again that each examiner is different and that you cannot expect all examiners to be encouraging. All candidates need to be prepared for an examiner who doesn’t behave in an encouraging way so that it doesn’t affect your performance. If you wish to prepare fully for IELTS, it is important that you do not misunderstand what I say.

      • Hi Liz, can you please explain me the question that has been asked in section 2 of speaking that’s the cue card. I din’t understand what has been exactly asked here.

  57. I, first of all, want to thank you, Liz, for creating such a platform. You can’t even imagine how beneficial it is for all the IELTS test takers. I took my Computer-delivered IELTS(CBT) today
    Following are my topics:
    Speaking
    Part 1
    About work.
    Borrowing & Lending:
    1. Have you ever borrowed a book from others?
    2. Do you like to lend things to others?
    3. Would you lend money to someone else?
    4. Would you lend a mobile phone to someone to make a call?
    Places to Play:
    1. Where did you play when you were a child?
    2. Did you play at your friend’s home?
    3. Did you prefer to play outside or inside when you were young?
    4. Do you think it’s important for children to play outside?

    Part 2
Describe a person who has interesting ideas or opinions. You should say:
    -who this person is
    -how you know this person
-what interesting ideas/opinions he or she has
-and explain you think why his/her ideas are interesting.
(Comment: Couldn’t speak for 2 minutes so there was a follow-up question asked which I don’t remember. Felt really bad as my Part 1 & 3 went well but part 2 was screwed. I am really nervous. I don’t know what score I’ll get. I need a 7. What do you think Liz? Is there a possibility of getting a 7?)

    Part 3
    1. At what age do you think (young) people begin to have their own ideas? (Why?)
    2. When do children start to have their own ideas?
    3. Who do you think has more influence on children’s ideas, their parents or their teachers?
    4. Can you suggest why children, as they grow older, have more and more disagreements with their parents about ideas?

    Writing Task 1 (Non-verbatim)
You need to do more physical exercise. Write a letter to your friend asking him to join you.
-Say why you want to do physical exercise.
-What type of physical exercise you are planning to do?
-Why do you want your friend to join you?

    Writing Task 2
Some young people are leaving the countryside to live in cities and towns, leaving only old people in the countryside?
-What are the problems of this issue?
-What can be done to solve this problem?

    Computer-delivered test experience:
#CBT is definitely relaxing in compared to pen and paper as there is very less crowd because of the frequency of the exam slots. There were I guess a total of 10 people.
#Listening was tricky for me. For questions from 27-30, had to drag and drop. the headlines which were given to be dragged to the relevant topic were close to half sentence so was a little difficult with listening and choosing the relevant heading then the dragging and dropping it to the correct place.
#I have been going through Liz’s blog for a long time and I see some people putting some wrong information, so let me update you on somethings as I have personally tried it.
a.Ctrl+C for copy and Ctrl+V for paste works. Ctrl+F for find/search doesn’t work. It’s disabled.
b.The timer does have seconds. You need to hover your mouse cursor on the clock in order to see it. I have attached a picture of the clock.
#The complete experience is as shown in this practice test: http://bitly.com/2RuEW5j
#I found the reading section to be the easiest one, was able to finish it 10 minutes early.
#In terms of writing, would suggest to do Task 2 first and then do the Task 1.

  58. Hello Liz today i have done speaking thnq Liz for your tips and advice.
    Part 1:-
    about myself
    Study or work
    about patience
    Part 2:-
about an incident that you felt proud of your friend success
    part 3:-
    Questions about success
I have small doubt when Ian speaking cue card question in the middle he stopped me so have not answered all the questions does it effect my band score.
and I have done my LRW test on 13th June
    writing task 1:- about maps
    And
Writing task 2:- in some countries people who visit art galleries are reducing.
What are the reason for this.
How can we solve this problem.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

      • Vamsireddy yakkanti says

        Hello liz
when I am speaking my que card question in the middle the examiner stopped me so I didn’t answer complete que card question does it effect my band score.

        • The examiner cannot stop you in the middle of part 2 before 2 mins have passed. The examiner will stop you after 2 mins have passed. No one is allowed more than 2 mins for their talk.

          • lovedeep singh says

            dear Liz,
As you have said that examiner can not stop the speaker before the two minute mark, but it happens way to often that the examiner stops after one minute and moves onto the follow ups. Can you please clarify this

            • It is against the rules of IELTS for the examiner to interrupt your talk before 2 mins has passed. This is a fixed rule. If you are talking, during that 2 mins, you cannot be stopped. However, if you stop before 2 mins, the examiner will move on to part 3.

  59. Hello Liz,
Thank you for guidance. Today I had my computer based exam .
    Writing task 1:
Write a letter to a friend mentioning that the product which you borrowed from his/ her got accidentally damaged

    Writing task 2
Why do students prefer doing part time jobs during their studies.
Do you think this has more advantages or more disadvantages?

For writing task 2, i mentioned as it has more benefits over drawbacks and dedicated an extra paragraph for disadvantages.Even though it is of 2 liner i am worried whether
    it will reduce my score.
    Please reply.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ When you explain that the advantages are more and the disadvantages are less – it would mean two body paragraphs. All body paragraphs must be equal in length. There is a limit on the band score for Task Response if some ideas are more developed than others. Take a look at this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2-band-scores-5-to-8/

      • Thanks Liz.
Fingers crossed.I am awating for my results. Hope I won’t be penalised much for this. Will that be only in task response or over all task score?

    • hello, Mrs vim is it possible for you to post the writing task 1 in detail I,e what were the bullet point questions that were given in the exam?

      • Yes sure. It was something like this
        For t1,

        B.how it got damaged
        C. What would you do from your end

  61. Hi Liz! Hi everyone! I took my Academic IELTS exam yesterday, 13th of June. These were the following topics that I can remember:

    Listening:
    Completing sentences exercises
    Listening map
A lecture about weapons in the past

    Reading:
A passage about Green roofs with T, F, NG questions
How well do we concentrate with multiple choices and matching titles questions

    Writing:
Task 1- Bar chart about Car ownership from 1971 to 2001
    Task 2:
In many countries, women and men are working full-time. It is therefore, logical for women and men to share household works.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
    Give relevant examples.

    • For those having difficulty in Reading and Writing, I suggest that you start to answer the last parts (Last passage in Reading and Task 2 in Writing) because they usually require more time and this will save you from rushing to finish the exam. Furthermore in Writing tasks, a day before my exam, I wrote a model answer in the sample ielts paper, which I got from Liz’ page to know how many lines I need to fill in the actual exam. I thought that it will guide me in estimating the number of words I’m writing without counting. I didn’t counted my written words because I almost consumed half of the back part in writing task 2 and my penmanship is small. I’m hoping to get a good band score. Thank you Liz for your valuable page. It’s the only material I used reviewing for the exam.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

  62. Hi Liz,

I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge to us, it greatly helped me in my preparation for the IELTS test.

Exam date: June 13 and 14
    Academic

    Writing task 1
A bar chart with information about percentage of household who owns no car, 1 car and 2 or more cars in a European country from 1971 to 2001.

    Writing Task 2
Nowadays, people in different countries are working full-time. Do you think it is right to share household tasks equally among men and women? Give your opinion and include personal experiences.

    Speaking part 1
    1. Can you tell me about your work?
    2. Do you enjoy working?
    3. How much time do you spend at work a week?
    4. What can be done to improve your work

    Speaking part 2
    1. Describe a party you attended
    2. Who you went with
    3. What did you feel about it
    4. What made it special

    Speaking part 3
    1. Do you attend parties frequently?
    2. Do you think families spend huge amount of money on special events such as weddings and birthdays
    3. What advice can you give to couples who are planning their wedding
    4. What particular events do you think will happen in your country in the future
    5. What do you think about hosting a party
    6. Is it important for countries to host international events?

    My tips:

    For listening:

Do not panic and keep focused on what you listen to. Do not try to write everything. I missed one of the items because I am preoccupied writing what I hear in anticipation that I might miss the answer and because of that I missed the right answer I was waiting for.

Liz is right when she said when you miss an answer you have to proceed to the next question. I kept thinking about the last item I missed and I reminded myself to catch up otherwise I would loose more points.

    For reading:

Time management is crucial. Make sure you stick to the time of 20 minutes or less is better. I finished passage 1 under 20 minutes but I find passage 2 time consuming. You’ll never know when you will take time in any of the passages so do not try to read everything and surely, you will be able to finish it under 20 minutes.

Try to write your answers directly to the answer sheet, with these technique. I am able to run through all the questions and answers the second time around.

Reading passages: Uruq of Mesopotamia, How well do we concentrate and Green roof

    For writing:
It’s important to pay attention to the time limit but do not stress yourself otherwise you will be like me who cannot think of any ideas at all. I feel that my question was simple but I was off-topic.

    For speaking:

Relax and be attentive. I was thrown questions after questions and I feel the time went by fast I did not realize it’s over. I guess the interviewers were trained to be friendly. She is nodding and aggreeing and even smiling as I give my answers to her, which made me comfortable. It was not as intimidating as I thought it would be.

    Thanks again Liz!
    God bless us all.

    • Thanks for sharing your topics and your tips πŸ™‚ Sounds like you have understood IELTS – hope your results are strong πŸ™‚

  63. I took an academic test on the 13th June.
    The Task2 question was
There is a decline of visitors to the art galleries in recent years
    What is the cause?
    Give a solution?
    Task 1
Diagram of a farmland before and after development program.
My doubt is, in the picture only north direction was shown so are we allowed to guess which part will be easy and west to describe it better.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is normal that only north is shown. If you know north, you have a clear idea where south, east and west are.

  64. Hi Liz,

First of all, thank you very much for your valuable tips and lessons. Those were really helpful to me when preparing for my exam in a very short time. I had my IELTS Academic on June 12th. Given below are the questions I got (what I remember now :)).
Writing Task 1 – A diagram with 2 bar charts regarding average time spending on 2 leisure activities (reading & listening to songs) based on different age groups.
Writing Task 2 – Discuss both views essay on “Libraries are a waste of resources and money and computers can be used to replace them”. Though I’m not exactly sure about the wording, it was the topic.

    Speaking
Task 1 – About my house, rooms, favorite room, throwing trash
Task 2 – About an advice I’ve given to someone

However, I was unable to complete my 2nd paragraph of the essay (actually the last sentence of it) due to poor time management. I was able to write the conclusion. Word count was enough (about 200 for task 1 and 270 for task 2). Now I’m worried about the impact of not completing the 2nd para :(.

    Thanks again.
    Regards,

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I’m glad you wrote the conclusion. Missing one line in a body paragraph means that it will affect the supporting points for that paragraph. This is a much less problematic issue than missing a conclusion. There is no way to know how this will impact your score, but whatever impact it has, it will only affect one marking criteria out of four.

  65. Hi Liz,first of all thanks a lot for your guidance.
I took the UKVI academic speaking test today.
    Part 1-

    what’s your name?
    Do you work or study?
For how many hours do you work in a week?
What can you do to be better in your job?
    What makes you happy ?
    Do you share things ?
    What all do you share?
Is there a you would not like to share?
Did u learn sharing from your parents?
What do u think will people share cars in future?
Do you use emails ? Do u think you should answer every email immediately?

Part2 – was there a subject or subjects which you didn’t like when you were in school?
Why do u think you disliked it?
    Do u like it now?
    What changed it?
Do u like any new subject now?
There were follow up questions –

    Part 3
Do u think it depends upon a teacher whether a student likes or dislikes a subject?

What qualities do u think a teacher should have?
Do u think students must be taught all subjects or specific subjects.

What do you think about research ? Is it important? According to you in which academic subject there is a need to do more research?

  66. Dear Liz,
I took my computer-delivered General exam on 8th June. Your tips and practice questions are quite helpful. I enjoyed learning.
Here are questions for the Speaking section.
    Part 1
    What is your name?
    Where are you from?
Do you stay in an apartment or house?
Which room do you like the most?
Do you often use social websites? Why?
What are the advantages of social websites?
Is it a good idea for people to spend more time on social websites?
Would you like to spend more time on social websites? Why?
How do you feel when you see people throwing rubbish on the street?
What do you think why people throw rubbish on the streets?
Do you think transportation on the streets damages environment? Why?
Which development is required in transport facilities in your country?
    Part 2
Describe an occasion when the vehicle you took broke down during your travel.
    You should say:
    Where were you going
    Who you were with
    How you felt it
Also, explain how long did it take to repair the vehicle
    Part 3
Which kind of transport is famous in your country?
Do younger people prefer public transport most or older people?
How comfort of people walking on the street can be increased?
There were a few questions more based on my answer to previous questions.

    Writing Task 1
You recently travelled on a train which arrived very late and you faced many problems. Write a letter to the owner of the company.
    Include the below points:
    1. Where were you going
    2. What problems did you face?
    3. What action would you like the owner to take?

    Task 2:
Some people think that money is the best gift for teenagers. Others disagree.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

My experience for the computer-delivered test:
    1. The online timer shows only minutes and not seconds. Hence I stopped my editing in the last 1 minute. The screen automatically submits questions when time is up.
    2. There is a highlight and notes feature available in the Reading section where we can highlight keywords. This makes easy to locate answers for lengthy paragraphs.
    3. In my test, all reading passages were quite lengthy. Hence I just scanned passages for locating answers.
    4. I ran out of time for writing and couldn’t get time for reviewing typo errors, spelling and punctuation. I mainly focused on covering the points and my thought process.
    5. In the speaking section, I was fluent in part 1 and 2 but lost fluency in part 3 as it made me think a lot while answering.
    6. I prepared for this test in 5 weeks.

Thank you Liz for your wonderful study materials and All the best for other learners for their exam.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Also a big thank you for sharing your experience of the computer based test πŸ™‚

    • Hey! Great to hear about your experience with CD IELTS. You apparently was served by lazy staff because they should have told you if you place a mouse pointer on timer then you will see minutes and seconds you have.

    • Hi Shine ,

Please reply back once you have your results out.Curious to know about it!!

I hope he gives me good score though ! 😊

        • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Not all examiners behave in the same way. It is 100% normal to be interrupted in your answers. It is a natural part of the speaking test and everyone should be ready for it. It is not something to be worried about and doesn’t affect your score – but if you are not prepared, it might affect your confidence. However, it is not normal or polite for the examiner to avoid eye contact. The examiner should always have positive body language. Unfortunately, some examiners are overworked. I wish you lots of luck with your results πŸ™‚

  75. Liz,
Thank you so much for such an incredible personal commitment to those who you have never met!
I have been preping for my AE and using your page quite often these days, and the other day I was told that in order to secure myself during the writing, I can leave a blank line after each line, so I can go back and make corrections, or insertions in case any good idea pops into my mind during the proofreading. My question is: won’t be I penalized if I follow this strategy? If yes, what could you recommend to ensure that I can still go back and make changes without having to erase the entire paragraph. I wouldn’t want to jeopardize my score.
    Thanks in advance!

    • I don’t usually answer comments on this page, but I will in this case because it will help everyone. You certainly should not do that. It will make it really hard for the examiner to see your paragraphs clearly and this could have a very negative impact on your score. If you plan your essay properly, you should not need to make so many corrections. If you need to change some words, just put a strong cross through them and write them again above – neatly, so that the examiner can easily see what you have written. See this page for all my free lessons, model essays and tips: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2/

  80. Hi Liz

    Need your help.

I forget to write β€œYours sincerely; XYZ Name” at the end of writing task 1 in GT IDP.

How much will it impact on my scoring?

Will that mean there is no chance for Band 7?

    • Missing that from your letter does not dictate your final score for writing. But it will have a negative impact on your score for Task Achievement which is 25% of your writing task 1 score.

  81. Hello Liz,
I took my exam on June 1st. Last time I wrote IELTS i got 8 overall, but got only 6.5 in writing. This time i prepared using all your videos and material and practised a lot.I bought your advanced writing -100 essay ideas which were also extremely helpful for speaking part 3 .The recent questions section helped me a lot, so I thought I should contribute too. I have a question for you, I was very nervous during my first question and fumbled a lot and had gaps, but by the time I got further I really improved and spoke fluently. Will one question affect my score a lot ? Do reply if possible. Anyways, these are the questions:
    – do you work/study
    – do you like your work?
    – how much time do you spend working
    – what do you think would make your work easier?
    – Are there a lot of public holidays in your country?
    -which is your favourite holiday?
    – what do you do on a public holiday ?
    – Do you think modern technology will help in crime reduction ?
    – Why do you think people are not accurate when they act as witnesses ?
    Part 2 :
Talk about an instance where someone you know hid a truth from you, who was it ? what did he/she say ? How did you feel?
follow up Q: Do you think you would have told the truth in that person s place
Part 3 : lots of questions about honesty
Do you think honesty is important?
Do people expect public figures to be honest?
Should children be taught to be honest ?
Do you think honesty is more important than any other virtue?
    WRITING:
part1 : line graphs about male and female prisoners in a European country between 1911 to 2001.
Part 2 : Some people think that books should be stopped in school and that videos, films and computers should be used instead. To what extent do you agree ?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Examiners are trained and experienced people when it comes to language production and testing. They know that people are often nervous at the beginning which is one of the reasons that the questions are quite simple in part 1 – it gives people a chance to relax and get used to the test. Your score is not based on your performance in each part, it is based on your overall performance and what your “real level” of English is. If you were nervous in part 1, but you felt better in part 2 and 3 – that will show and will be taken into account. The test is aimed at assessing your actual level of English. If your English in part 2 and 3 was band 8, you can’t be given less because you were nervous in part 1. Try not to worry. Lets wait for your results and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you πŸ™‚

  82. Hi! I’ve my academic ielts test on 1/06/2019
Listening task – it was quite easy although I got a map which was s little tricky. Most of the questions were one word only.
Reading task – passage 1- Aboriginal arts in Australia
    2. Effects of air pollution in indoor and outdoors
    3. Research on Academic study
( it was easy but I ran out of time)
Writing – a table chart about salaries of teachers in different countries.
W2- more and more developing countries are expanding their tourist industries. Why is this? Is it a positive development?
Speaking – general questions about where I live, house or apartment?
Questions related to cousins and relatives.
Cue card – talk about a person who encouraged you?
Follow up- it was about parents and children. How can parents motivate their children?

From my own experience, I have found that it is very important to manage your time especially in reading and writing. Otherwise all of your hard work will be wasted.

Finally, I want to say thank you Liz. Your lessons are quite helpful:)

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ You are absolutely correct – time management is essential in reading and writing. Glad you lessons were useful πŸ™‚ Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

  86. Vishnupriya Panchal says

    Hello Liz,
My husband and I sat for our test on 1 June, 2019 in Surat, India. We had a truly terrifying experience, section 4 of our Listening test was missing from the CD given to the test centre. 400+ candidates were taking the test besides the two of us. We were told to continue with the Reading & Writing sections while the team tries to resolve the issue in our Listening section.
All of us were hoping, after 6 gruelling hours of waiting and writing the test, that we’d have just the one part of Listening to complete. However, when we finsihed our Writing test, the invigilators asked us to take the entire Listening test again as there was a “technical error” and this issue was faced by test centres all over India!
Though we had not choice since the invigilators said they have been instructed by IELTS to make the candidates re-appear for the Listening part of the test, we felt utterly flabbergasted with the overall experience with our IELTS test. Neither could we focus on our Reading and Writing test, nor could we do justice to our second Listening test.
Although I personally went and spoke to the highest authority present at the venue, my words fell on deaf ears, all they could respond is, “Please raise your concerns to the Customer Care. Our hands are tied!” They even made us erase the answers we had written on our original Listening answer sheet to utilise the same for the new test.
I have posted this to know if others in India have faced a similar issue on the IELTS test dated 1st June, 2019 and also as a reference to all the test takers in India, such things do happen.. So be prepared!
Furthermore, I was wondering if you (Liz) could guide us in taking action and bringing this to the notice of the relavent authorities at the British Council and/or IDP.
    Eagerly awaiting your response.
    Warm regards,
    Vishnupriya

    • I’m really shocked to hear about your experience. Awful! If you wish to take it further, you could try IELTS Official and go through official channels. IDP and BC are both part owners of IELTS along with Cambridge – so go to IELTS Official which is the main company – post on their FB page – in public – and by email – in fact any possible method of communication. However, I rarely hear about IELTS “doing the right thing” which would be to give everyone a free test and let them choose which test results to use. When equipment fails in the IELTS test, they seem to expect candidates to struggle on, often causing them hours of extra waiting and stress, which all affects their performance – not acceptable. I wish you luck with your complaint – I hope you let us all know if you got a satisfactory result from the complaint – it would be nice to know if IELTS “do the right thing”!!

      • ankit gupta says

Same with us in Jaipur. We did it again

      • Amandeep Kaur says

Same happened here in Mississauga, canada. Listening CD stopped playing after section 2. They took the booklets back and gave us reading. After reading they played listening from section 3. There no time to read the question and the mind was totally blank after reading. I almost missed section 3. When few of us complained then they were making weird faces like we are doing wrong by complaining about it.

    • Elizabeth Thomas says

I took the exam from Bangalore, India on 1st June 2019. We did not have any issues here

    • Same issue at listening at anand, Gujarat,India πŸ˜‘

    • Navjot singh says

Same problem in patiala, india we should take action against British councils because its enhance our stress

    • neema peter says

The same happened in Hyderabad,The should give us grace marks for all the stress!

  91. Hi Liz,
I took my IELTS ACADEMIC test today June 01 2019
Writing Task 1: The table gives information about the salaries of high school teachers in 5 countries ( Australia, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Luxembourg). The table consisted of of the starting salary, salary after 15 years, maximum salary and number of years to achieve the maximum salary.
Writing task 2: Many developing countries are expanding the tourist industry.
    Why do you think so?
    Is this a positive development?
Sorry I can’t recall the listening and reading test as I did them in a rash. As for the listening test, there was an echo in the room and it was not able to hear the recording clearly, I told one of the exam invigilators, but she said that she can do nothing about it. Also during the fourth section one of the candidates that was sitting in the same row as me, started coughing and I couldn’t hear the answers of some of the questions. I was really disappointed at the end of the test and I’ve raised a complain about it, so I was wondering if that is a valid complain and what are they going to do about it?

Thank you so much Liz for the useful content it really helped me prepare for the test.

    Regards,
    D

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Unfortunately, I’m not sure what can be done. They can’t alter your score and it is unlikely they will give you another test. I rarely hear of IELTS tackling customer complaints in a proactive way – they certainly never seem to learn from bad customer experiences and also don’t seem to change their test procedures. My advice is if you don’t get the score you expected for the listening test, take the test again in a test centre that uses headphones. This is something all people should check before booking their test at a particular test centre.

  94. I had my speaking test on 30.05 the questions were :
    do you work or study?
    What do you do exactly?
    Do you like your job?
Garbage topic: what do you think about people littering the streets instead of using the wastebaskets? Something about resycling (do you participate in it?) do you help maintaining the streets tidy?
Perfumes: do you like perfumes? What type of perfumes do you like? Would you ever buy a perfume as a gift?

Second part: describe a situation when the vehicle you were in completely broke. Cue card questions were: who you were with, where were you going, I don’t remember the third, and the outcome and consequences of the situation.

Third part was about regular public transport in your country, how should the government develop transport system, do you agree that it should concentrate more on the environmental impact of the transport, do you think zebras for pedestrians crossing the streets are safe enough.

I was speaking pretty confident and fluent at the beginning but I totally lost my concentration when the test reached the third part, and I used several local words while speaking. How bad that is?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It all really depends on how well the examiner could follow what you said. Also don’t forget that part 3 is not marked separately – your score is based on your overall performance. This means individual questions won’t have a big impact. However, part 3 is usually the time to showcase broader language skills so if you struggled in that part, it might have an effect on the language you produced. There is no predicting a score for speaking – it really depends on your fluency, grammar, vocab and pron from start to finish. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

    Best wishes,

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your score is based on what you say, not on what you understand. This means it doesn’t matter if you didn’t understand the question or you misunderstood it. Whatever English words you produce will decide your score. There are no right or wrong answers. Even the answer “I haven’t got a clue about that but I think …” is a great answer because it shows high level English. So, your score for speaking will depend on the level of English you spoke during your test – nothing else matters πŸ™‚

  100. Hi Liz
I had my speaking today 29 may 2019
    Intro quest.

    Photographs
Cue card:-product u purchased but did not use much

The examiner did not interrupt me durinf my speaking
As i have heard mostly teachers speak in between
    I’m quite worried
But I answered all the question ..but got stuck only in one question but then I aswered that question also
    Will it affect my score?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ If the examiner interrupts or not is the examiner’s choice – it is not about your score. Your score is not based on how many questions you answered or if the examiner interrupted or not – it is based on the fluency, grammar, vocab and pron you used throughout the whole test.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ In speaking part 2, it is often a good time to plan the range of grammar you will use. This is because in part 1 and part 3 you do not have thinking time or planning time. However, your score for grammar is not decided only by part 2 – it is based on your entire performance throughout the whole test. Grammar only counts for 25% of your final speaking marks. Band 5 = frequent errors which cause difficulty for the reader. Band 6 = some errors, particularly with complex grammar, but the meaning is clear.
Glad you have enjoyed using my site πŸ™‚ It’s nice to know I have helped people. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

  102. Hi Liz

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

      • I just got my results- L 8.5, R 8, S 8.5, W 7.5- I was most confident of reading hoping I WOULD get 9 but I got only 8. Similarly, I was thinking I will get 7 on writing based on gradings I got from another website. But, Liz was right. Her tips are very useful. I hardly much of a preparation and the exam did feel a little tough for the listening section. All in all thanks very much Liz, and I do hope this gets posted !!! Don’t worry guys, this exam is quite doable

      • Hello Liz.
I would like to thank you for your great job. Your new e-book with ideas for essays is a real treasure. It should cost much more! This was a pity that I got it just a week before my exam. If you don’t mind, let me ask you to add a little to the book. It would be very useful if after every topic in the book such as Education or something you add a list of the possible task 2 for the same topic. Yes, the general topics are already on your website and you can map them easily to e-book’s topics, but it would be very useful to develop your critical thinking and give topics a little bit different than the examples in your book. For example, in your book now there is an item about cause and solution for some problems, but in the task for this topic could be 2-question essay. It should stimulate people to modify and rephrase your ideas from the e-book, not just “copy and paste”. Thanks a million again, you are the best.

        • I understand your points. However, the free list of 100 IELTS essay questions (divided into common topics) are linked in free Useful Links Page that comes with the e-book. The link is there to be used. Also the free video lesson that comes with the e-book explains about adapting the ideas to suit the essay question. So, to be honest, it is unlikely I’ll be adding more to the book. In some ways, IELTS is endless – there is always more than could be added. I do appreciate your feedback though – it’s always useful for me to hear. And I’m very glad you like the e-book πŸ™‚

  104. Hello Everyone!, i attended my speaking and listening test on 24th may 2019

Liz, the examiner stopped me 3 or 4 times in different topics, and didn’t allow me to conclude my answers, is it something bad? Thanks so much again. xx

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It’s 100% normal for the examiner to interrupt your answers. It isn’t something you need to worry about. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

  105. Hi Liz,

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your score is based on your overall performance based on fluency, grammar, vocab and pron. This means you can’t predict how your score is influenced by just one or two questions unless the entire speaking test is heard. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

Hi liz ,. I did not understand thelast question of part 3 posted by SHY please can you explain about it.

  106. May 23 , 2019

    I had a test (AC)

    Writing task 1
    – 3 bar charts about employment rate in agriculture , industry and services in three countries (A,B,C) from between 1980 and 2020

    Task 2
There are fewer controls on the designs and construction of home and office buildings. So , people can build them whatever they like
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages ?

    Speaking
    Part 1
    – Do you work or study ?
    – Social network topics (Frequency of usage , Pros and Cons)
    – Rubbish and garbage topics

    Part 2
Describe a person who speaks foreign language well
and then there was a following question
    – Do you learn any other foreign languages (except English) ?

Part 3 (I can’t remember the questions exactly but the questions were about these)
    – Do you think it is possible to speak like a native ?
    – Benefits of studying languages in jobs/careers opportunity
    – To learn new languages , which one is harder between writing and speaking ?
    – Is it possible to use English as a global language ? I said no , and I explain why
and then there was a following question
    – Which language you think it will be (instead of English) ?

I think I didn’t speak well in my Speaking test because of being worried.
I use few linking words : ( I also think that the examiner ask me lots of questions (But the questions were tougher) because maybe I give the answers too short (Just 2-3 sentences per questions).
Do this will affect my scores ?
    Thanks

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I’m not sure why you were thinking about linking words in your speaking test. The IELTS speaking is not marked in the same way as IELTS writing. While it is normal to use some linking words in speaking (and/but/because/so), it is not vital to use a range. I’m sure you used the linking words I mentioned. It is fine to repeat them again and again in speaking. Your speaking score will be based on the language you produced and the accuracy of the language you produced. Good luck πŸ™‚

  112. Hi Liz,
    Thanks for your help.

Today, on 22 May I had speaking test.
    Section 1:-
    1.About my Hometown?
    2.Are you studying or Working?
    3.About street markets?
4.Do you share your mobile with others?

    Section 2:-
Cue card:-You invited someone to have meal/lunch/dinner at your home?

    Section 3:-
1.In the future, where people will be treated? Restaurant or home?
2.Where will be more advantages to treat someone you know? Restaurant or Home?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

      • Hi Liz,
If you are presented with a question like Man has above in his Section 3, how do you go about it knowing that treat has 2 meanings? Treat could be “treat a sickness” or “provide someone with food or drink or entertainment”. The options of restaurant or home gives a cue that it might be the second meeting but could it also be a trick question? Does it not matter seeing that the Speaking section tests vocabulary and pronunciation? Is it okay to spot the different meanings in your response or ask the examiner which one he means?

        • You need to remember that the questions posted are written by candidates based on their memory and on their level of English. The question is not actually written with accuracy which is why you don’t understand. The examiner would not ask the question using those words. If there is ever a time (in part 3) when you don’t understand, you can say to the examiner “Can you explain what you mean?”

  113. I had my speaking test today
    Speaking questions as far I remember;

But part 3 is where you talk about world issues and keep away from personal stories – this is something you need to prepare for. The examiner was trying to help guide you, but in your confusion, you didn’t understand. It is not possible to predict your score as it is based on fluency, grammar, vocab and pron – so you will need to wait for you results to see how you did. Good luck! πŸ™‚

I need one clarification: We can’t ask examiner to repeat question In speaking test part 1 but I asked one because I did not understand either he was asking about enjoying weather outside or inside the county. Will it affect my score?

      • It is 100% fine to ask the examiner to repeat the question in part 1. However, they can’t explain it in part 1, they can only repeat it. In part 3, you can ask them to explain it.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

      • Neha khan says

Hi Liz, thank you so much for being a great help. I just had my speaking exam and I am quite worried. Actually, I couldn’t cover the last question of the cue card and I stopped answering 10 seconds early. Is this a major mistake?

        • There are no questions on the cue card. There are prompts which are guidelines that you do not need to use if you don’t want to. Fluency is not measured in seconds and is based on your performance in all parts, not just part 2. I see nothing to worry about. Your score will be based on your language performance.

    • I’m glad you specified that you took the “Computer-delivered test”. No one does it. I wish everyone do it.

  119. Hi Liz,
First of all I would like to say thank you for your site,it’s been a useful tool for my review. More power to you!

    Task 1

    Task 2
Some people think that team sports prepare children for work life. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Your preparatory material helped me to get a gist of the test and also enabled me to be confident. Listening and reading were quite easy. Though I didn’t have much time for writing I managed to complete both tasks with the required details. Speaking was my main concern, as I get nervous during interviews. During the speaking part, there was some technical problem with the recorder so I had few minutes to relax. Moreover, the examiner was friendly and I felt like I was having a smooth conversation with her as the test progressed. I’m so grateful for your website. You are an excellent teacher! God bless!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Sounds like you had a good speaking test – good luck with your results πŸ™‚ Glad you found my preparation materials useful.

    • I also got same questions for Writing and speaking

  121. Vishnupriya says

    Hi Liz,
    Hope you’re well.
I’d like to know if we can switch to the next section of the test once we’re done with the previous section and have time to spare.
For example, if I complete the Listening section of the examination and do not want to use the allocated time of 10 minutes to transfer my answers to the answer sheet, can I then utilize those 10 minutes to begin the Reading section instead?
I have the same query if I have time to spare between the Reading and Writing sections of the test.
    Look forward to your reply.

    • I don’t normally answer questions on this page, but I will for you because I think it will help others. You have one hour for the reading test and one hour for the writing test. This is fixed. All candidates around the world have one hour for reading and writing – it is equal for everyone. If you finish reading early, you must sit and wait for the hour to finish. Then everyone will start the writing test at the same time and everyone will be given one hour.

      • Vishnupriya says

I really appreciate your response to my query, Liz! Thank you for making an exception to address my doubt, this will help me prepare better for my test on 1st June.
I’d also like to thank you on behalf of all the students who benefit from the content on your website and in your videos.
        Best wishes,
        Vishnupriya

    Best Regards,

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It’s best to review all common topics for IELTS writing: https://ieltsliz.com/100-ielts-essay-questions/. Mostly practice the structure, ideas and supporting points rather than full essays. Just a few full essays is enough. Make sure you practice two full essays under exam conditions. Getting used to concentrating for 2 hours and 40mins is essential. Good luck!!

  126. May18 IELTS General training

Why it is not a good idea to use your own vehicles?
How to improve public transportation to help pedestrians?

    Writing Task 1
Write a letter to your manager about a party which you are going to organise for a friend

    Writing Task 2
Some people think to learn a secondary language well it is necessary to live in a country which that language is spoken.

What is your opinion about this?

I did the CBT exam for the first time. Unfortunately, I missed my focus in the listening part 3 for few seconds because I couldn’t find the next question. It was a silly mistake because I was clicking the next question button on the bottom right corner rather than scrolling down. I lost focus for that entire section and had to guess answers for all 5 questions in that part. When doing paper-based exam I was able to achieve 8.5 for listening but this time I’m not sure whether I get even 6. Sad

Anyway, Thanks Liz a lot for all the great tips and sharing valuable information. Your essay package is extremely useful. I highly recommend that for those who need to improve your writing.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ That’s such a shame about your listening test. It’s really easy to lose your place in the recording. Hopefully, your guessed answers might be correct. Fingers crossed πŸ™‚ Glad you like my Advanced lessons πŸ™‚

I’ve never thought about ……..”, you would still get a mark for the use of idiomatic language “have a clue”.

Through out the exam my examiner was smiling and listening to my answers with confident inspiring smile. I loved the attitude of the Examiner. So i gave my test as easy as possible. No tension, nothing. The exam went well overall.

And last but not least, lot of thanks to you Liz πŸ™‚

  135. Hi Liz,

I took my IELTS GT exam on 11th May. Following were the speaking topics asked during the test. The examiner was smiling throughout the test. It really motivated me to be comfortable and communicate my ideas naturally. I hope I didn’t get carried away during the test.

    Part 1:
    Job
About sky watching- do you like to watch the sky? when- in the day or at night? Is there any place where you like to watch the sky?
Keeping secrets- Do you think that you should share everything with everyone? Why?
I don’t remember the questions asked about this topic. Sorry.

    Part 2:
Talk about a job that your grandparents did.
    what was the job
was it the only job they had
would you like to do this type of job

    part 3:
do you know any person who still does this type of work?
Is there any job which requires a higher salary? Why?

    ## My doubt here is related to the answer that I gave- Job that deserves a higher salary is of a call center executive. I certainly provided ample arguments to support my answer. However, I was asked to name one more profession/occupation to which I replied, the job of a journalist. Since these people have to go out and interview people irrespective of the outside conditions. I’m not sure if that would count, though I explained enough.

Should companies invest in training their employees? what will be the benefits?

Also, If you could kindly help me to let me know the correct answer to the below questions which I got in my reading test.

Q- The museum has a collection of shoes worldwide. (t/f/ng)
Not able to recall much. But, a close paraphrased info from the text: The museum displays a collection of shoes. It represented historical and cultural values from around the world.

Q- Adults can pay less on a specific day of the week.
    Info- Adults- $20 Seniors- $15 Children- $10 Infants- $5
    Pay-less Thursdays
To encourage people to visit the museum more often, you can visit here on every Thursday of the week and pay less than the actual ticket price. (paraphrased and tried to put the meaning of what was stated in the text in the test as much as I could.)

I appreciate your kind services for the IELTS aspirants. Also, your website is truly beneficial.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Every question in the IELTS Speaking test is a chance to show your English. You are not being marked on your ideas at all. Ideas are not marked in IELTS speaking. So, your marks would be based only on your fluency, grammar, vocab and pron. For anyone else taking the test soon, examples of jobs that should get a higher salary can be doctors and nurses – they provide a vital service to the community and often work very long hours – particularly nurses who are often very underpaid.
For your reading questions, it is not possible to comment unless I see the precise wording of both questions and passage.
Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

    • Hello everybody. Thank you Liz for your tips and advice. Todat was my speaking test and prepared for it from your website.

      Study or work
      About sky astrology

      PART 3
      Necessary subject at school
      Technology and science
      Teachers behavior

I am immensely grateful from you. All topics was the same you have below.

  138. I appeared on 11thMay as a General Training candidate.
    Speaking:
Cue Card was about favorite Musician/Band
    -Who he is?
    -Where do you met him?
    -Why he is your favorite?

    Writing:
Task 1: Write a letter to counselor who is about to close playground in your area.

Task 2: Many people think that money promotes happiness.
What importance does money have regarding happiness?
Give your answer with relevant examples.

I have written essay in disagreement to above statement, In introduction i wrote thesis statement and outline statement as follows:
This essay disagrees with this argument. In this essay i will first discuss what importance does money has related to happiness and what factors contribute to happier life.

I want your opinion (Liz) that if i wrote introduction in a correct way or not ? i was confused wether it is agreement disagreement essay or it is 2 part question because they mentioned only 1 question,l. However, i wrote introduction by disagreeing the general statement and also answered 2 questions in different paragraphs, after that i also stated my view point at the end of conclusion. I want to ask if i attempted essay according to fine strategy or is there something wrong in my approach, and will it effect my writing band score ?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your task 2 writing was a direct question: What importance does money have regarding happiness. All you need to do is answer the question. In the comment above, you said you answer 2 question in different paragraphs – there is only one question. So, I’m not really sure how you tackled it. But however you approached it, it only impacts your score for TR, not for the other three marking criteria.
The best way to deal with this question is to say that money can influence happiness, but it is not the deciding factor.

      • Is this statement “This essay disagrees with this argument ” in introduction, fine or not?

        • The words “This essay” do not count as your own personal opinion in IELTS.

          • Thanks Liz for clarification, i was quite worried about this particular sentence whether it will affect my essay or not, coz i don’t want examiner to take this essay as agree/disagreement essay. Now i can be in peace after your clarification.
And thanks for your materials i really got huge support from your essay structure strategies, which made it easier for me to write them.

  140. Hi Guys,
I just would like to share with you my whole IELTS Journey. At first, I didn’t took this exam seriously because all I know, its just a basic exam testing my English proficiency. since I am working overseas (KSA) and we use English language here, then I don’t have anything to worry. I took my IELTS UKVI exam last March. I got R-6.5, L-7.5, W-6, S-7. I am so devastated. I felt so dumb for not passing the exam. then my friend refer me to visit Liz site. I scanned the site but then, I didn’t took it seriously and after a week, I’ve decided to take exam again. Yes, I failed again. results: L-7.5, R-7, W-6, S-7. After my second attempt, I contemplated and asked myself what went wrong. so I focused in writing and read all articles here religiously. Being consistent 6 in writing is heart breaking. So I practiced a lot in writing task 1 (specifically) and just understand the pattern for Task 2. after 2 weeks, I took the exam and I got the following results: L-8.5, R-7, W-6, S-7) Yes, I failed again in writing because required is atleast 6.5. From then, I really don’t know now what to do. I am so heartbroken and honestly, I gave up. But my friend inspired and encouraged me to apply for re-mark. I know I did good in writing that time (thou I’m not 100% sure), so yes, I gamble and applied for remark. after 20 day, I got the result and my Final score now is: L-8.5,R-7, W-6.5,S-7). I am so happy because finally, I made it.

Thank you Liz for this very helpful site. it helped me a lot. every night I am repeatedly playing your vids. in youtube until I fell asleep πŸ™‚

to IELTS takers, my piece of advise id not to memorize anything here. just study the pattern and use it. BE CONFIDENT and if you fail, you can be sad for awhile but after that, flip your hair and retake the exam. its not how many times you took the exam, the most important thing here is how you stood up and continue fighting for your dreams. goodluck to all!

    • I don’t usually approve results comments on this page, but I think it’s a great message for everyone.

“its not how many times you took the exam, the most important thing here is how you stood up and continue fighting for your dreams. goodluck to all!”

Thanks for sharing and well done with your results πŸ™‚

I’d like to ask a question: is the examiner allowed to show emotions? because my examiner was really rude, he

    • Sparrow says

Sorry, I somehow clicked on the send button.

So my examiner was really rude, he was making facess all the time, he was rolling his eyes etc. Is he allowed to do that? I know he didn’t like my opinion abput the topic, but he made me feel insecure about everything, and I started stuttering and forgot everything I knew.
On the other hand, in the 3rd part sometimes he didn’t formulate whole questions, just asked β€œwhy”. Is it allowed? I am so frustrated and I don’t know what to do. πŸ™

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Examiners are supposed to be encouraging and friendly in their behaviour which is designed to put you at your ease. However, not all examiners are the same and not all examiners are friendly. IELTS needs to get cameras in the speaking test rooms. It is important that you all enter your speaking test ready for anything and be determined that no behaviour on the part of the examiner will affect you. Also when it comes to interrupting your answers abruptly – it is 100% normal.

      • Thank you for your quick reply! I really appreciate everything you are doing for us πŸ™‚
I hope for the best, and if I don’t get a good score, I’ll be more secure next time.

        • That is exactly the right attitude. If you get the results you need in your first test – it’s great. If you don’t, you will be more prepared for your next test πŸ™‚

Speaking test on 6th may 2019
    Hi Liz

    Task1
    What is your full name?
What do u do? Study or work?
    I said teaching
What do u enjoy about ur work?
How do u prepare urself for ur work?
    Do u enjoy teaching?
What is best thing about teaching?
How many hours do u work per week?
    Why so many hours?
    Where do u live?
How do u feel about crowded areas? Why?
    Task2
Cue card about ideas for a perfect house?
    Where this house should be?
    Task3
Different types of houses in ur country?
Where do people like to live apartments or individual houses? Why
What are the disadvantages of living in apartments?
Does living in old houses have any disadvantages?
What is the difficulty in living in a city?
How can one overcome these difficulties?
If government commercialise cities will it be helpful?

Liz Overall I did well in speaking. I was mostly fluent and answered all the questions well. In task2 , I was stuck for about 6-8 seconds as I was distracted all of a sudden but then resumed speaking. I could speak for 1min and 45sec approximately on an average. Will that long pause be a negative influence on my score?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your score for fluency is based on your overall performance throughout the whole test, not on each part. Sure, it’s not great to stop speaking completely and have a long silence. But if all other mins and seconds of your test were fluent, it won’t affect your score – because it’s about your overall performance. The examiner is not looking for reasons to mark you down – the examiner is listening for reasons to award you the score you deserve.

  151. Hello,
my exam (Academic module) was on 4th May and here are the questions:
Listening: 1.filling gaps 2.multiple choice by choosing 2 correct answers in 1 question 3.multiple choice 4. filling gaps
Reading: Passage 1: YNNG ,multiple choice, Passage 2: TFNG ,Multiple choice, matching meanings with names (related with the text) Passage 3: TFNG, multiple choice, matching paragraphs with meanings
Writing: task 1- bar chart; reasons internet use for men and women in the UK, in 2013
task 2-goverments believe that they should increase the cost of fuels for cars and
other vehicles in order to solve enviromental problems.
To what extend do you agree or disagree?
    Speaking: Part :Work or study
Rubish, recycling, what people usually do in my country with them, why do i think this happens ?
Part 2:Cue card: time when you see a person you didn’t know and talking on the mobile/cell phone in a public plase: when-where-what he was saying
Part 3: Why people talk on mobile phones in public transport? Is this hapenning to your country? What is your opinion about silence? Why peole can’t stay in silence? What about noise from radio, tv or noise from nature ? Modern people tend to be attached to each other 24h/7 d because of technology, why?
I’m a little bit dissatisfied with myself as I need a 7 band score and I’m not sure for the result as I made a lot of mistakes. Also, I didn’t understand what hapenned in the end of speaking, when the examiner asked me a question and I hesitated but I was thinking and when I tried to speak and ask him what he meant he showed me the clock moving his hand, smiling and told me time was up. What was this about?
Your site is super helpful, thanks a lot!
    Fingers crosssed!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ i’m not sure what your query is about. If your test has finished, it has finished. The examiner can’t give you extra time – it isn’t allowed. You will be marked on the language you produced during the recorded time and nothing else affects your score.

  152. White Lily says

    –Writing
Part 1 : Informal letter. You left your watch at friends home and write him a letter regarding this.

Part 2 : Governments prohibiting the underage children fro getting full-time jobs in certain countries. Is it a good thing or bad thing?

(Here I am confused. Is is asking my opinion or not?Liz, If you can answer this, I’ll be really thankful)

    –Speaking

    Part 1 :

    Do you work or study?
    Where do you work?
What do you like about your job?
If something can be changed about your workplace? what would be it?
    What is your favourite color?
    Why is that?
As a child did you prefer brighter colours ( Since I answered black is my favourite color )
What is the color scheme in your room?
    Do you like it?
If you buy a car, what color would it be?
    Why is that?
    Do you like music?
Have you been to a live concert?
Describe the event a bit please?
If you have the opportunity to learn one musical instrument, what will be it and why?

    Part 2 :

Describe an exiting sport you played in your childhood. Use following guidelines.
    What is the sport?
    With whom did you play?
    Where did you play it?
Why do you find it exiting?

    Part 3 :

    Is winning important in games?
Is it the most important thing we get from playing sports?
What is more important in team games? team victory or individual performance?
Competition among kids good or bad?
Do you think competitiveness is something you are born with or something you learn? why ?
Should we give awards for participation and why?
What are the benefits of competition among rival companies?

Part 1 was like blitzkreig. Half of these questions were asked just when I was done answering to previous one. Had a hard time to process answers because I was
prepared to answer at length, not a lightning round.Anyway managed to answer them all without much problem except struggled to answer one.

Color is not something I was prepared for and found it bit odd and hard to answer. No one have asked me what’s my favorite color for a long time I guess πŸ˜€

Part 2 was fine. I was only stuck in one sentence looking for a specific word.

Part 3 was fine generally. Got stuck in one question again for 3-4 seconds looking for a word but generally ok.

Anyway examiner was really friendly and supportive throughout the interview.

I visited your site regularly for advice. Thanks a lot Liz for your invaluable service. I really mean it.

Cheers and good luck all the test takers.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your writing task 2 required an opinion. You need to state clearly if you think it is positive or negative. For speaking part 1, colour is quite a common topic. But you are right, it is often a long time since anyone considered answering such questions – even in their own language πŸ™‚ Part 1 can seem like, as you said, “a blitzkrieg” – the examiner can do rapid fire questions without giving you a chance to finish one answer before asking a new one. It is something you need to be prepared for in part 1. Glad you found my site useful. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

      • Hi, Liz..
I am one of your anonymous fans who admires you and your teaching skills. Being a teacher myself, I have learnt about how to deliver one’s thoughts and opinions in the class, while preparing for IELTS, following your website.

Mam, my LRW is on 11th may and I am still struggling to get desired scores in Listening (GT).
Kindly help me for the same.

        • There is no such thing as a GT listening test. The GT IELTS test has a different reading and writing section – that’s all. Your speaking and listening tests are 100% the same as the Academic test. There is only one speaking and listening test for everyone. So, I recommend that you review all my listening lessons and use the IELTS Cambridge test books for further practice of full tests.

  153. Hi all and Dear Liz,

First of all, I really appreciated the effort you put on this website. I have been using the content for a month. Since I had a little amount of time for exam preparation your website helped me a lot on learning the structure of IELTS so quickly. I got my exam today and the questions that I can recall is below:

    Listening
    Hotel Reservation, facilities etc
    a photographer
2 students discuss their class about poetries
    London subway is overheating

    Reading
    1- agriculture (TFNG, Multiple choices)
2- aeroplane or something (list of headings, matching information, summary)
3- Creativity (TFNG, Matching information, Summary completion)

    Writing
    Task 1
how to make a jam out of fruit chart
    Task 2
in many cities, young people prefer shopping as a form of leisure activity, why do you think this happens and is it a positive or negative development?

    Speaking
    what do you do?
    do you like perfumes?
what kind of perfumes do you like?
have you ever get perfume as a gift from someone?
would you pay a lot for perfume?

    Cue card:
describe a time when you give advice to someone?
    who was this?
    what did you say?
    did he/she take the advice?

    related questions such as;
-why young people do not like listening to advice?
-what kind of advice parent tend to give?
-which areas do you think would be risky for parents to give pieces of advice?
-why do some people think that they do not need advice?

there were more questions related to this topic.

Liz, I have a question for you. During the speaking test, I was so fluent, and talking so fast (this comes from my personality), using natural fillers, and clearly answered questions. And I am pretty sure that I used uncommon words in the appropriate settings. However, I was repeating myself at some points and correcting myself while I am speaking and these happened more than two times. Do you think I will be penalized because of these reasons? Thank you so much.

    • Sorry for multiple comments, but I feel like I had to say this for others. I also purchased your advanced level writing videos, it was amazing and more than helpful!!! Thanks for that though.

      • I’m really pleased πŸ™‚ I tried to pack as much information as possible into the lessons πŸ™‚

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is really normal to repeat yourself in speaking. In writing, you have time to plan, write, correct and then proof read. In speaking, your ideas and language are spontaneous. So, it is natural to have some repetition – don’t worry about it. If it happens to native speakers, it is acceptable in IELTS. Your score will be based on your overall performance and the language you produced.

Will I lose marks if I don’t mention any example?
I overlooked that part and haven’t mentioned any example

      • Examples are used when relevant. This means you can choose when to use or not use them. I often don’t think of examples easily – it’s fine.

Hi Liz, thanks for your tips and advice..really it was very helpful. Particularly advance writing video was excellent ..I think just watching your video people can go and write the essay no need for extra preparation..I have just subscribed one of ur essay and found very helpful ..I have also read some books but felt your video covers all of them…unfortunately my time management was poor and didn’t complete the essay fully with conclusion…topic was very easy…but got bit nervous…Topic was advantage and disadvantage of renting my home…but I failed to complete fully..one of my tip would be concentrate more on time..despite people trying harder for sucess but at the end ..not able to complete it would really put them in lower band..I am the best example..I have completed the task 1 ” letter to manager saying not accepting job offered instead suggesting friend for the job “.. but in task2 started well..but later understood that my understanding was wrong and rewrote the essay back changing completely…. so second tip practice to complete essay and letter together in 40 min and remaining to check…finally once again thanks for your tips and efforts for all those who appearing in ielts..sometimes I feel jealous of you because your contribution and dedication towards this website and wish and pray God to do something good like you do the society without any expectations…good job sister! Keeping my fingers crossed for the results.

        • You hit the nail on the head ! Time is such an important factor in IELTS writing (and reading). You need time not just to brainstorm ideas but also to check that your ideas are on topic and 100% relevant to the exact issue or issues in the essay question. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your results πŸ™‚

      • Hello Liz,
How are you doing ? At the very outset, I would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your selfless contribution towards raising the scores of IELTS test takers. I am awestruck by your thoughts and apparently dumbfounded by the value this website adds to the lives of such people. Indeed, I am one amongst all those who did benefit out of your teaching. Hats off! I had given ielts five times and had been through your website the sixth time. I had been taking notes of your tips. All these paid off. I am now able to walk with my head held high and say that below are the scores of mine.

        Listening and speaking 8.5
        Reading and writing 7
        Total overall score is 8

I had been losing on writing each time and had ever been landing up on 6.5

I do not find it enough thanking you and I truly appreciate the efforts of yours.

        Thank you very much

And how can be it solved

  170. Thanks ma’am for your wonderful tips. I did my speaking test of 25th and I goofed in part 2. How I forgot some of the points I rehearsed about the topic baffled me but that is by the way. I hope for a favourable outcome. These are the questions that I was asked;
    PART1:
    Describe the place you live?
How long have you live there?
    Are you a patient person?
Were you more patient when you were younger?

    PART2: CUE CARD
Describe someone you know that is intelligent.
What is the name of the person?
Where did you meet this person?
Give a reason why you said the person is intelligent.

    PART3:
Are people in your country intelligent?
Do you think that your country recognise intelligent people?
Do people in your country recognise international movie stars?
Do you believe that children should be allowed asses to computer at early.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It’s not such a good idea to get too hooked on remember things you prepared at home. In the test, you must approach all questions and parts naturally and let your speaking come out spontaneously. Any preparation prior to the test, needs to be technique and your own personal memories from your own life. It’s only part 3, that isn’t about you. Part 1 and part 2 is nearly all about yourself and your own life – so don’t get too hooked on fancy ideas or anything like that. Your ideas are not marked in IELTS speaking – they are marked in IELTS writing. And in IELTS writing you have lots of time to plan ideas.

(Please note the task 2 question is not the exact words as I forgot the first sentence)

Just want to thank Liz for this great platform which helps so many people. πŸ™‚

I would like to thank u liz for ur great website it was really useful to me during preparation for ilets . I hope I get good band scores😊

  173. General Test Topic on April 27

Reading is as usual time constraining especially the last part which is very long and you can’t easily find the answers. But the best advice I can give is READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

    Writing Test:
(1)Letter to a Manager about the book you order online but you didn’t received until now? Give the details of the order , why do you need it now, and what do you want the company do.
    (2) Some people say that it is the responsibility of the residents to maintain the clean and tidy street while others say it is the government officials. Discuss the different views and what is you opinion.

    Speaking Test:
Part 1: the usual personal question like whats your complete name and where are you from then directly to the topic. The examiner mostly asked about the work. How do you go to work? Do you consider taking any other transportation? When you were a kid how do go to your school? What is the interesting thing about going to school? What will motivate you at work? What are the qualities of a good colleague? Is it difficult to work with a friend?

Part 2: Tell about someone you enjoyed working or studying with.
-State the who the person is
-When did you meet the person
-Why do you enjoy working/studying with the person.

Part 3: Is it good to have a leisure area in your work? what will be its benefit? Is it possible to have it in your current work.

I kinda enjoy talking to the examiner because I felt like I was just talking to a friend and his approach was also relaxing, I was like really discussing everything about the work related issue thats currently happening or that I really experienced so everything just come out normally. So my advice for speaking is just think that your talking to a normal friend like youre having a regular conversation and deep breath before you enter the room and everything will all go smoothly.

  174. GT, 27/04/19

-When and where do you want to meet them again.

    Task 2.
Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole.

    Speaking
    Part 1.
As usual – Workplace. Your hometown. Why do you like your job? What can help you to be better at your work? What is the most overcrowded places in your hometown?
    Why are they overcrowded?

When did you last time enjoy being in the crowd? (It was a wierd question, probably he asked me because I said: “I feel confident in a crowd :)” I replied back by saying it was on the Easter eve in a train station but I cannot say I enjoyed this time.

    Part 2.
Describe a person you have seen who is beautiful or handsome

    Reading:
Section 1. Regulation to obtain car license in New Zealand – special rules for learner and full license.
    Section 2. Railways in UK.

    Section 4. Lecture about seahorses.

    My advice and experience:
My speaking examiner was brilliant. We had quite informal chat going to the speaking room, were laughing about IELTS exam, because he asked me if l like to pass to the exam, I answered yes, so he said me – you can tell me the true, I also tried it a couple times, so I know your feelings πŸ™‚ During my speech, he also helped me a lot by the expression on his face, I could find out that I’m losing the point of doing mistakes. So overall, atmosphere was pretty relaxing which lift me up for a bit. I felt like I found the examiner similar to my personality πŸ™‚ (or may be I just was thinking like that)

The best of the best advice, which I would like to mention, is a sleep well before the exam. Despite I went to bed around 11:30PM and woke up about 6:30AM, I actually really slept about 5 hours because I did some IELTS tests on the day before the exam so I felt like my brain was still working during a sleep, plus I was really nervous which helps insomnia to suffer me :). It is extremely bad, just the worst thing I can imagine before the exam. So I do recommend you to find a way to relax your mind and body in order to be in 100% capacity, refreshed and have a clear mind during the test. I could not find a way to organize it, hopefully you will be able to.

Liz if you are still reading my confession πŸ™‚ is it ok to use Singular they on the IELTS exam? will it be count as a mistake?
Can you shed a light on how tests are being assessed? As far as I know R and L checking are fully automated, so they will be processed by computer which will recognise hand writing and give a mark? But how speaking are assessed? Will it be assessed by the same examiner or others? Will it be done at the same day after all speakings over or how? I found that my examiner was writing something on the paper during speaking some digits like 10 in one column, 11 in another one. What do they mean? πŸ™‚ Forgive my curiosity, I just cannot wait for the results and it is really interesting πŸ™‚

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The examiner who conducts your speaking test is the one who decides your score. At the end of the test, after you walk out of the room, the examiner will decide your band score and write it down. It is only at the end of the test that the examiner knows what score you are because it is based on your overall performance, not on each part. Any notes the examiner makes on paper while you are talking is not related to your score and you definitely shouldn’t pay attention to it. Numbers relate to timing – nothing you need to worry about. About using singular they in writing – no problem πŸ™‚
Thanks for sharing your tips – sharing is caring πŸ™‚

    • dhaval bhatt says

you are so lucky because you got friendly examiner she dont even talk properly

  175. 26.05
    Part 1:
How long do you live in your city?
What improvements could be done there?
What things do you usually share?
Do you like sharing things with people?
What are the things that you don’t like to share with others?
Are your parents taught you to share?
Do you think that people would share cars in the future?
    Part 2:
Traditional meal in your country that you really like (polish people – dumplings and beetroot soup FTW) πŸ˜€
    Part 3:
Do lots of people grown their own food in your country?
Is it hard to grown your own food?
Do you think that nr of these people in the future would decrease or increase?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation? (you can exemplify your answer with McDonald’s, highly recommend)

Overall guys, DON’T STRESS, atmosphere on the exam is really great, examiners are soo nice, she didn’t interrupt me a single time, so go there confidently and smile a lot! πŸ™‚ There’s nothing to be afraid of! Wish you luck! β™₯️

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Sounds as though you enjoyed the speaking test which is important. Being interrupted is not about the examiner being nice or not – it is a usual part of most speaking tests. It is something that everyone should be prepared for – if it doesn’t happen or if it does happen has no bearing on your score or on how nice the examiner is.

  176. Hello Liz,

You’re doing a wonderful job through this website and it is extremely useful.
Thank you so much for all the help.

I had IELTS GT CDT on 25/4/2019 and these are the questions I got for writing.

    Task 1:

Someone has returned your bag with all its belongings that you recently lost. Write a letter to thank that person.

    thank him/her
explain how you left your bag
explain why its belongings were important to you

    Task 2

One of the best methods to motivate and encourage workers is to pay them according to what they produce or sell.
Do you think this is the best method? Give relevant examples from your experience.

    Thanks

  177. Hi Liz,
Speaking for GT held today 25-04-2019

    Prt1: What is your name?
    Do you work or study?
    Where do you work?
What improvement will you like in your work?

Prt2: Tell us about a film/TV program you saw that made you laugh
*title *main character * what made you laugh

    Prt3 : Follow up questions
Do you think humour is good for the body?
How important is humor in a relationship?
Do you consider humor has a talent?

Closing remark : We have come to the end of the speaking test…..

    Thanks Liz …..

    Cheers.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Remember, that there is no GT speaking test. All candidates take the same speaking test – there is only one speaking test for IELTS.

    • Dear Liz,
I also got the same set of questions mentioned above!
      One doubt though..
During the start, my examiner asked me..what should I call you?..and as it was just the start…I was very nervous and said…
      ‘Anything…shruti is also fine’
Is it inappropriate? Have I made a blunder!πŸ˜₯
Otherwise the test was fine. The examiner was really nice and comforting.

PS : Your work is amazing!!! Keep it up.

      • Did you make a blunder? No, not at all. It’s a completely natural way to answer that is 100% appropriate. It’s an informal speaking test and that works perfectly. But the problem I’m worried about is… did that affect your confidence for the rest of your test? Were you worried about it? Hopefully, you didn’t let it affect you. Rest easy now and look forward to your results πŸ™‚

  178. Hi Liz,
My L,R and W Test is on 27th April and i would like to ask in your READING TIPS VIDEO, you say to take time reading and analyzing the question statement, while we have one hour for three passages. How can we manage that time?

    • You have one hour to find 40 answers. Analysing the question will help you locate answers quicker and choose the right answer. Your aim is not to understand everything, it is simply to locate information and choose correctly – without analysing the question enough you won’t have prepared paraphrases (this will mean it takes longer to find the information in the passage) and you won’t have analysed the meaning enough (so you might choose the wrong answer). It is a question of correct practice before your test.

  179. and one more question Liz.
in the end of my speaking test.i abruptly said to examiner that ” hope i did well” and she just smiled but said nothing.. will this effect my score or i mean its a bad or good impression for examiner?

    • It makes no difference to your score at all. It’s completely normal to say that. Just forget it.

      • Hi Liz, during today’s speaking test I drew an underline on the cue card in part 2, will that affect my score? Thank you for your help!

        • No, nothing can affect your score except the English language you produce. But to save paper and resources, I suggest people use the paper given for notes and underlines, not the cue card.

  180. Hello Liz,
Today I had my speaking exam 24th April 2019.
Part 1 – Do you work or study? What is your job? How to improve your job better in your office?
Part 2 – Describe a place of history that you would like to learn about
Part 3 – Questions related with history

  181. I had speaking test on 23rd April 2019.I would like to share some questions based on my memory.
    Part 1:
can you tell me your name?
    where are you from??
are you a student or do you do a job?
did you like everything about your college or wished to change something?
There were more questions but I forgot.

    Part 2:
describe a person who is doing something to protect the environment.
    Who he/she is?
    what does he/she do?
what is the difficulty in doing so?
I was really confused because at that moment not a single person popped into my head and I gave a fabricated answer out of imagination. He said can you tell me more about the person?I said I can’t? later I thought I had prepared well for that topic.I regretted because there is a businessman saying no to plastic bags and encouraging recyclable bags in his supermarket and building parks as a part of corporate social responsibility.I could elaborate a lot about him.So I suggest everyone please prepare well on recent topics as I knew that topic was asked earlier recently.
    part 3:
what can an individual do to protect environment? I could tell a lot but I missed out points like limiting use of private vehicles , maintaining gardens, use of recyclable materials.
Why don’t politicians care much about environment?
do you think nations must cooperate to protect environment?
What are the main environment problems?

my rest exams are going to be held tomorrow. Please advise me what should I do day before exam.I find reading quite challenging and can’t manage time otherwise I could fare well.

  182. Writing task 1:
You work for an international company. Recently your job has changed and you believe that more training is needed. Write a letter to your manager and say
    – How has your job changed?
    – Describe a type of training you will need.
    – Suggest the arrangements incorporating training and your work.

    Writing task 2:

Nowadays young people know less about traditions and culture than in the past. What are the reasons for it? Is this a positive development or a negative development?

Speaking (Part 2): Describe a person you wanted to be similar to when you were growing up

  183. Speaking. 23 April, 14.30 p.m. (Academic)
    PART 1
    Do you work or study?
What do you like about your work?
What would you change in your workplace?
Do you like going to parks?
Do you prefer parks with open space or facilities?
When did you last go to a park?
    Did you enjoy it?
    PART 2
Describe the situation when you last complained.
    Who did you complain to?
    How did you feel?
    Did you like the result?
    PART 3
Do people often complain in your country?
    Why do they complain?
Who usually complains more: older people or younger people? Why?
Why do some people always complain?

    • I remembered some more questions.
Is it better to make a complaint face to face or on paper? Why?

Thank you, Liz for creating this website. I prepared myself for the speaking as the questions were similar. That’s my third IELTS this year. I always get 7.5 for speaking but unfortunately get only 6.5 for writing. It makes depressed already. What can I do? And I’m an English language teacher myself.

      • Oh, and also can writing tasks be repeated throughout the world?

        • On any one day, there might be a number of test papers used. Certainly old essay questions can be recycled, but it is less common than for speaking.

      • I think you’ve just explained the problem yourself – you are a language teacher. Most people with native or similar level of English, enter the test feeling confident in their English but without having understood the marking criteria or the band score requirements enough to give the examiner what they need to see to be given a higher score. This is more common than you might imagine. I’ll email you about this further.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

        • Similar? There is only one speaking test for all candidates. Only reading and writing have a different GT paper.

      • Chuks david says

        Hi Liz ,
my speaking text is tomorrow 24th April and I’d like to ask if I have to follow the guidelines sequentially on how to answer the speaking text questions eg ” the what, where , when and how’s” Or can I answer it the way it suits me but still answer the question according to the guidelines expected of me? Also can I use short words like “I’ve ” instead of ” I have”
You’re really doing a spectacular job Here.
        Thanks

        • There are no questions on the cue card. You do not need to answer anything. There are prompts to guide you and it is your choice how to use them. Following the order is a good thing because it creates a clear framework and order. Furthermore, the examiner is expecting the information in that order. However, it is your choice and doesn’t affect your score if you change it. Just make sure it is coherent – that it doesn’t jump about from one thing to another randomly. Also make sure you add more – a lot more. Yes, you can use contractions. See this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-help-faq/

  186. Hi Liz, am quite nervous. Just concluded my general speaking test. The question is nothing like I imagined. The interviewer had to interrupt and rephrase a couple of times. I lost confidence most especially because of her countenance.
    Questions are
Part 1 where do you live. What do you think about national leaders and more questions.
Part 2 cue card. Describe an important decision you made with help of someone. She interrupted alot.
    Part 3 can’t remember.

What do you think Liz. Is this normal?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ In part 1, the examiner will normally interrupt your answers. In part 2, you have 2 mins to talk and they cannot interrupt you during the time you are talking. They can and must stop you when 2 mins is up. These are the rules of IELTS and no examiner can change them.

  187. Hi Liz,

    Academic
    ——-
    SPEAKING:
    – Part 1: at school, what is the thing you struggle most with? How did you overcome it?; What is your favourite movie star? Do you often see movie stars in your country?
    – Part 2: talk about your perfect, ideal house and why you think it’s perfect for you
    – Part 3: environmentally friendly technologies usage at houses; the differences between living in a house and a flat; advantages and disadvantages of living in an apartment
TIPS: recently, IELTS speaking tests mainly focus on social problems (things like public transport, etc)
    ———
    LISTENING:
    – I think the listening test is quite easy for me. Personally, I did very well on Section 4 (which is supposed to be the hardest) but missed one answer on Section 1.
TIPS: – If necessary, you can email the IELTS centre that you’re taking the test, express your concerns and ask them to leave a note for you to sit closer to the speaker (if the centre only offers speakers but not headphones)
    – Be very mindful when you are required to circle TWO answers in the multiple questions section
    – A website that I use and find very helpful in practicing is ieltsonlinetests.com, go there and you won’t regret it.
    ———–
READING: the 3 paragraphs were long and a bit bulky, so DO read them as fast as you can. I’m a fast reader, nevertheless still struggled to manage the time.
    ————-
    WRITING:
    – Task 1: I was given 2 college diagrams (maps) in the present days as well as their plans in the future.
    – Task 2: More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that the price increase of fattening foods will solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  198. I had my computer based gt exam today

Speaking part 1 was about work, sleeping hours and cooking.
Cue card: something you taught to a younger person.
Part 3 was mainly about skills that children should learn before school.

I did really good in part 1 and 2, but i had a complete mind block in part 3. I made some mistakes and i couldnt think of good ideas. I m not sure if this will greatly affect my score. Please advise.

Writing task 2 was a discussion essay. It was about ppl should be to drive at 18 or 25 years old.

Writing task 1 was a formal letter to an hotel manager asking about a party you want to arrange for somebody you know.

Typing was much easier than writing for me, and i was able to revise and read my essay a couple of times.
    Good luck everyone.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

      • I got my scores today. L 8.5 R 8.5 W7 S8 overall 8

I was stuck in 6.5 writing score, and this was my 7th attempt.

I am truly appreciative to you Liz. I would have never scored 7 without your advanced writing videos. They are absolutely useful and comprehensive, and they give clear structure to follow.

My message to future test takers: follow liz’s structure and advice, include different types of sentences in your writing to boost your grammar score and try the computer-delivered ielts (it was much easier for me). Don’t give up ppl!

        Liz, you’re a life-saver!

  199. Hello Liz,

Thanks so much for your page, it was very helpful during preparation.
So, here are my questions for the Academic Module:
    1) Listening: a young man being interviewed about the town he lived in
a man talking about a vehicle sale/market and how and where to find what on
    a map
two students talking about a plant and how it affects the environment
a scientist talking about how people might have traveled from Asia to America
in ancient times and setteled down

    2) Reading: one text about eating, food and celebrations in ancient Rome, one text about optimism and psychology and science thereof, one text about using old diaries and records of the life cycles of plants and animals and how they are used by scientists today to research climate change

    3) Writing: describe how a TV center has changed over ten years according to two maps
an opinion essay about how parents and teachers believe that children should be supervised in their activities most of the time whereas others believe that kids need more freedom

    4) Speaking: I had a very nice examiner. My questions were: about my job and how I get to work, about handwriting and if I liked two write with my hand. Then I had to prepare and talk about a situation where I didnβ€˜t have enough time to finish something. After that she asked me about how and why people today seem to have less time today than some years/decades ago.

I hope it helps. I didnβ€˜t find it that hard but it also wasnβ€˜t an easy breezy thing either.

    • What I forgot: I invested some time in finding a pencil I liked to write with and a good eraser only to find out at the test venue that we were not allowed to use our own stuff and had to use the pencils and erasers that were given to us by the test center. And I really didnβ€˜t like these! I might be a bit strange concerning my pencils and pens but I like to use stuff Iβ€˜m comfortable with in exams. Donβ€˜t know if anyone else can relate to this though.

      • Personally, I fully understand. Pencils are not all the same. Some are easier to write with than others.

        • One experience I would like to share is about preventing smudges on the answer sheet due to eraser marks. To prevent unsightly eraser marks, I found it helpful to rub off lead residue on the eraser surface by rubbing it off on the question paper or on my pants. I did this while I was listening to instructions. The test center initially provided 2 pencils and a used eraser and at the end of the reading test an IELTS staff member went around offering more pencils. I requested 2 more for my writing test. I had about 280 words on Task 1 and about 310 words on Task 2. I used all 4 pencils until they were blunt. The lead was really soft, there was shallow tapering on the newly sharpened pencil tips, and I used a lot of pressure while writing. I hope that would help on the mechanics of pencil writing and erasing on the IELTS.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Glad you had a nice examiner for the speaking test πŸ™‚

  201. Hi Liz, been using your website and resources for a couple of days and i tried using all the tips and tricks you have shared so thank you!!I had my speaking exam today and I am a fluent English speaker but knowing that I will be tested on fluency and vocabulary is quite unnerving. I tried to be as fluent as possible however I realise I did repeat a lot of vocab. How much will that affect my grade?
For part 1 I was asked about whether I work or study and whether I like parks or gardens.
Do I prefer open parks or parks with leisure facilities.
Part 2 was about where I find it easiest to study and why
Part 3 was about whether academics is better than experience for getting a job.
Hope this helps other IELTS candidates πŸ™‚

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ In speaking, it is perfectly normal to repeat words – it doesn’t affect your score. The score for vocabulary is about the range you use in different topics, not about how many synonyms you use. Speaking naturally and with fluency is the aim. Remember this is an informal speaking test and the marking criteria are not the same as IELTS writing.

  202. Hi Liz,
I had my speaking exam last week for IELTS General Training.
    Section 1:
Tell me whether you study or work. Tell me about your work
Do you enjoy your work and why ?
    Do you look at sky?
Do you prefer sky at day or night?
Do you have any particular place in your house where you can see the sky?
What do you enjoy most about sky?
Do you use to see sky when you were kid?
Section 2: Tell one instance when you receive a bad customer experience in a restaurant?
Cue card: 1- When it happened? With whom you were? What you did about it
    – I explain the restaurant where it happened and with whom I was. How was I mistreated and what I did about it. But at the end of my speaking I was stopped in the middle of my sentence. So I just stopped and said Thank you. Did I do something wrong? Will this affect my score?

Section 3: Mostly question related the customer experience like, reason why people think that they are getting bad customer service, have you faced bad customer service during online shopping- how ? , Are people having high expectation for customer service. I actually find most of the question quite repetitive, so most of my answer were almost similar. How will it affect my score?
    Thanks and Regards,
    R

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Remember there is only one speaking test. The above questions are for any candidate regardless of what test they take for reading or writing.

  203. Hi Liz,

Thanks a lot. You don’t know this but i have been a silent reader and your page really helped me a great deal. i was surprised as to similarities in questions that i felt relaxed and instantly at home in the first few seconds of the interview. I had my speaking test today so i would share my experiences as well, like many before me.

    Part1
    Do you work or study?
Do you like your place of work and what do you like about that?
Is there anything you would like to change about your work place and what is that?

    Part2
Name someone you know who is doing something good about the environment
    i) Say who the person is. ii) How he/she does this. iii) Challenges he has experienced in the process of doing this.

    Part3
Name a serious environmental challenge that you can think of and why?
Do you think international organizations or nationals has responsibility towards address these challenges.

N/B: the questions aren’t recanted word for word, just wanted to give a general feel of the questions and hopefully it helps someone as other contributions did help me. like a great woman always “sharing is caring”.

    Good Luck Folks.

  204. Took the GT Test on April 6.

Writing Task 1 – A item of clothing you purchased but found some issues with it once you returned home. Describe – what the item was, what were the issues, and what you expect the store manager to do.
I wrote about a 3 piece suit because if I had written about a shirt or a pant, how much could you really write to describe the product. Or how many issues can you have with a single shirt. With a 3 piece suit I could describe all three items separately and mention different issues with each. Hope a 3 piece suit counts as an item of clothing.

Writing task 2 – Should people get a job right after school or should they attend university. Discuss both and give your opinion.

Speaking Part 1: Where you live, what you like about the area. What you dont like about it. Do you like pets, which kind do you like, which ones you dont. Handwriting vs typing. Handwriting analysis.
Part 2: A beautiful/handsome person you have met. Where you met them. Their personality. I spoke about a film actress and told the examiner I have not actually met the person but have seen them on TV in Live TV shows or press conferences.

    Thank you, Liz.
And, good luck with high band score, Guys.
Please, also pray for me, I just need band 7, with minimum 6 each session. Ameen.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is normal for the examiner to interrupt answers – it is a normal part of the testing process. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

    • I took the same exam at the same date as well.
      Task 2
Today, many people have little knowledge about the importance of natural world.
What are the reasons for this?
How can we solve this problem?
I found it was quite difficult, and I spent around 10 mins on planning, brain storming part is very hard as well cause I seriously have not much ideas why… so I managed to give some reasons, for example, it’s because people are more interested in enjoying their own material lives and chose to ignore the natural world around us. Another reason is there is not enough information or education provided to the general public by the government to encourage people to get involved more in protecting natural world.
Also, I give the solutions as: 1. educate people at their young age such as put more information regarding to natural world into children’s study book; 2. Encourage families with children to go out more and have closer contact with the wild world.
I felt I was out of ideas on this topic and could you give me some advice on this topic… thanks a lot Liz

      • Your ideas are absolutely fine. Why are you worried? Your ideas do not need to be exciting or ground-breaking, they just need to be relevant and well explained. Your reasons are certainly relevant. Another reason is that many people live in urban areas which are not designed to encourage wildlife and have not allocated space for nature, such as parks or gardens. This could actually also lead to a solution of better planning in urban areas.
Your solutions are clear and distinct which is good. Another solution is to involve the media. In the UK, we have amazing wildlife programs that encourage children and parents to get involved in nature by giving them projects for their garden and suggesting ways they can make a difference. The programs are incredibly well filmed and presented by people who are enthusiastic and good at communicating to a broad age group from 5 years old – 60 plus.
Good luck with your results πŸ™‚
