  2. Should we have to give headigs for the body paragraph 123….

  3. Hi! Could you please help! I took my test today and my task 2 topic was “In many places the role of father and mother is changing. Do you think it’s a positive or negative development?”
I wrote my essay about the fact that the role of parents is changing nowadays…but now I think that the meaning of the topic might have been different – the change of role between mother and father.
What do you think the consequences will be if I really misunderstood the question? Will examiner be able to see that the question can be interpreted both ways?
    Thanks so much in advance

    • The question cannot be interpreted in any other way – it is about the changing roles between father and mother. If your essay is off topic, it will affect the score for Task Response which is 25% of your writing task 2 marks. You will still be marked fairly on the other three marking criteria and also on task 1.

  4. Hi Liz,

How do we generate ideas for few unfamiliar topics exploration and so. IELTS might sometimes ask us to write an essay on topic where we practically don’t have much knowledge and we might fall short of words for Task 2.

Please suggest what to do in such situation?

    • I’m currently working on an e-book of ideas for writing task 2 topics – I hope it will be ready before the end of this year. Until then, you must do your own research online to read up on these world issues.

      •’s indeed a great news.

      • Has this e-book released? if so where can i find it. I am struggling to get a score for past 2 years.

        • I hope it will be ready at the start of Feb. It is fully written, but I need to format it. It’s a really long book, so will take me time. The e-book is about Ideas for Writing Task 2. My second e-book which is currently being written is about grammar for writing task 2.

          • Vipinchandra Arvindbhai Vankar says

            Have you published the E-book?

            • Not yet. I hope to have the “Ideas for IELTS Essay Topics” ready some time in March. The “Grammar for IELTS Writing Task 2” e-book I hope to have ready by Autumn.

              • Even though I am a little upset that the book is not going to be available sooner for my exam, I am extremely excited for other future IELTS students. Thank you for doing the good work. Your lessons are absolutely mind blowing. So precise to the point. Everything that a student needs.

  11. Hi Liz,

I understand you are on a break but it is important that I ask this query at this juncture as I am due to sit for my IELTS exam in three days from now. Sometimes it is not very straightforward to decipher the question type in Writing Part 2. For instance, the topic ” In many countries the tradition of families having meals together is disappearing. Why is this happening? What will be the effects of it on community and family?” is one such example where I am unable to make out whether it is a discussion essay or an opinion essay. Any tips on how to deal with such topics?

Your early response will be much appreciated.

    • Just answer the questions. IELTS writing task 2 isn’t complicated. The questions are written clearly and the instructions are obvious. You answer the questions. If there are no questions, you follow instructions. You can see two questions – this means you will have two body paragraphs and each will explain the answer to one of the questions.

I am very confused with writing questions, where you are asked both reasons and is it positive or negative? I’ve red all your site but can’t understand how to structurize such type of questions. How to separate reasons why is this happen from reasons why it is bad or good
    For example this topic:
” nowadays more and more people want to get things done instantly (services, information, tasks). Why is this? do you think it is positive or negative development?”
    Looking forward for your answer.

    • Simple – just answer each question.

      • Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by the government, rather than by private companies. To what extend do you agree or disagree
How can we give intriduction to this question

  24. Question 12 Some people become famous at young age. Is it good thing or bad thing?
These days, popularity is achieved at an early age for certain people. It is argued by many that such thing can be advantageous while others believe that it has drawbacks. In this essay, I will point out to why it brimgs more disadvantages.

Film stars, athletes and artists who become famous at a very young age spend their entire childhood at rehearsals, sports practices or in studious. They have to work day and night to make themselves better, as we all know popularity doesn’t come without hardworks. As a result, school time is compromised as they barely have time to attend classes, take exams or even finish school. Some statistics have analysed that 60% of famous stars have abandoned education at primary level itself because they have to choose work over that. Therefore, sacrificing education, which plays a vital role in today’s life, to attain popularity is certainly detrimental to children’s.

Secondly, becoming a celebrity early can at some point spoil the child. These people have many fans and followers and they receive high respect and importance by society. Also, many companies sign big contracts with them, giving them high pays at the end of each work. These children live a luxurious life at an early age and they know that money is never a problem. Mannerism and certain principles of life are not taught to them. For example, there are many leaked online videos revealing how young superstars are spoiled due to fame and money. They do not have respect to their parents or elderly people and they can easily throw tantrums when their needs are not satisfied. So, high prestige or reputation should not be given to children.

To conclude, I think that it is most definitely not ideal to let young people taste the effects of popularity too early in life since school education and successful principles of life are obstructed.

    Please comment.

  25. I mam,
I have one doubt over here,

Please give me any helpful advice if you may to improve my writing. Thanks in advance.

    Question 9

Living urban life comes with advantages of great facilitis and amenities but it cuts both ways as there exist a number of challenges that city dwellers have to face on their day to life as well. To counteract the issues, among many possible remedies, one feasible approach could be the promotion of rural migration by the governments. In this essay, I will outline three commonly encountered problems in the big cities and evaluate the effectiveness of decentralization as a solution of the issues.
Regarding the hazards of city life, perhaps the dominant one is the burden of population. This is because of the presence of wide-ranging employment opportunities are on offer in the cities. People from the rural areas or urban sprawls are moving into the cities in the hope of living a better life or to simply earn their livelihood. This contributes to the accomodation and the traffic problems of the city. The second key issue is the ever-rising environmental pollution in diiferent forms. To illustrate this, the noise level that is produced by the traffic on the roads or the widespread factories, is beyond the human capcity and as a consequence people are often suffering from diseases like high blood pressure, anxiety disorder an so on. On the top of that, air pollution is also posing a great threat to the city people, specially to the children. Another crisis that may be encountered in the cities is the lack of socializing and family bond, which is an effect of materialistic life-style lead by the inhabitants here.
To address the present problems in the cities, a number of steps could be undertaken and decentralization should be prioritized before considering the rest. This can be achieved by establishing more work-places, educational instiutions and entertainment centres outside the city areas of the country. By doing so, the crisis of overcrowding and pollution can be minimized, and over and above that less people would mean less competetions for life, and this in turn will allow the city-dwellers to interact more with each other and foster the social harmony.
To sum up, the challenges of living in the cities are primarily to do with overpopulation, environmental hazards and social isolation, and these can be dealt with, to a great extent, by promoting living outside the cities.

  28. Gurmit Kaur says

    Hi Liz,
Thank you for all your tips. It helped me a lot and now I would like to contribute back by sharing with you and everyone on this blog on Writing questions for task 1 and 2 for IELTS General that I recently took on the 20th Jan 2018. Based on what I remember, below are the questions.

    Task 1:
Write a letter to your friend who just delivered a baby to congratulate her and tell her about gift that you bought for her.
    In your letter;
    describe the gift
tell her why you chose that gift for her
    make arrangements on visiting her

    Task 2:
Some say air travel should increase then it currently is, whilst others think that it should reduce and the government should do something about it. Discuss both and give your opinion.

These are the topics as far as i can remember.

  29. I had LWR ON 20th jan . Ahmedabad Gujarat India
Task 1 = review on new theater by general customer and club members
Task 2 = some people think government should not spend money on international aid because its led unemployment and homeless in our own country . Give your opinion . Agree or disagree.

    • Thanks for sharing 😉

    • Aminur Rhaman says

Hi Ronak what was your stand; however, I cannot but disagree with typical view mentioned in the questions. My introduction is as below:
Although international aids hold significant values in terms of global relations and politics, some people still believe that such benevolent acts merely bring good to other countries while native people suffer from various uncalled issues: scarcity for homes or lack of job opportunities. I strongly in favor of continuing all kinds of donations for the salient advantages they bring to all which may not be apparent easily but have have long term impact in the bilateral relationships among countries.

  36. Ravi Kumar says

    Hi Liz,
my query is for question n. 8.
    it has asked
    1- methods of improving sales.
    2- which is most effective.
    so BP1 will discuss advertisement
    BP2 will discuss regarding discount
and BP3 will talk about customers feedback which is the most effective method in my opinion
Is this the right way to structure my paras for this essay type.
please reply asap, i have myLRW on 20th Jan.

    • There is actually no right or wrong way. One way is to have all the possible methods in one paragraph and then have another paragraph which explains why the one you choose is the best. Another way is the way you have described above. The examiner does not give a better score for one or the other. The examiner is testing logical organisation and both are organised and logical.

In this kind of question “scientists say that in the future humanity will speak the same language. Do you think this is a positive or negative social development?”, is it required to give an opinion or discuss one side or both sides? I’m asking because of the “or”.
    Thank you.

  47. Hi Liz;

Please proof read my write up

    question 6

Position occupied in a company , determines the level of salary received. Even though some people disagree in amount of salary paid to workers of different levels, i agreed that management staff should received higher salaries than other staff of lower categories due
to their office occupied with the experience acquired and qualification.

every organisation has a payment polices for each category.such payment details are stated in human resources policy. it is the duty of this department to a portion what salary to received from the company to each office which are always based on the level of experience acquired such as the post of operational manager, office of the managing director, the financial controller and office of the management .Note that each of these offices has a required working experience attached to the office; which means that their salaries are higher than the another based on their hierarchy. Put differently, category of office in an organisation received different salaries as compared to ordinary workers.

Qualification is one of the yardstick that determined the salary received from the employer. workers who acquired different certification generally ,A qualified accountant received different payment as compared with ordinary accountant or bookkeeper or cashier; their payment is obviously different from each other
the salary of First degree holder is not same with ordinary National Diploma [ OND]
likes the office of the Managing director is far as compare to operational managing. therefore attract different payment from same company.

In Summary ,i strongly agrees that senior management received higher payment than others .this is as result of importance the company attached to the office and experience recevied

    Thanks a lot, Liz

please edit my write up. i have exams on 20th jan.

    question 7
Spending is a habit that are that are developed over time. Some people choose to spend rather saving it depends on the habit built up .In my view, spending is inevitable especially when it is within the budgeted list such as basic personal needs and social needs.
Despite the unnecessary spending of personal wants, some needs are inevitable in individual lives, such as clothing, food and shelter. In the society today, covering of once nakedness is paramount without it the public will see you as once who is insane .More over, providing food and shelter is necessary due health implication and security reasons.
I spent money on food, clothing and pay for my house rent which is vital in life , if not done whom do i expect to take care me? Therefore ,I strongly agrees that spend should be within basic needs in order to live a healthy life.

lives in the society varies , some are of high ,medium and low class, as each person will like live within its social class. Living in a particular social class attract some cost such as spending moderately or immoderately . The son of the President will lives like billionaire as compare to the son of a public servant or farmer .the President son’s is most likely to spend more than its Senator’s Son, and far above the son of public servant of farmer as case may be.To their class such spending is vital in order to maintain that social level.

In a nutshell, i quite agree that some people spend money rather than save it due to their personal needs and social class in lives.

  50. Hi Liz,
I am confuse in question 7. What does it mean spend of money ? Doesn’t mean excess spend? Do I consider it extreme case of spending or saving?

  54. hi liz
    thanks for your great lessons

  55. HI LIZ
thank you for your great lessons.I would like to ask you, minimum ielts band score do i need so that i can apply to the university of UK or USA to get an admission.

    thank you

    • You need to check the admission for each individual university. On the whole, it is around band 6 for undergraduates. But make sure you check!

  56. Hey Liz,
I had the first question in my ielts test and I agreed that people copy each other and i supported my agreement by mentioning celebrities and social networks in my outline! Now, does that satisfy my task acheivement!!

    • Task Response is not only about the main ideas you use but also how you present them to form an opinion. Furthermore, it is about how you develop those ideas. Certainly people copy each other due to media pressure as they want to follow celebrities – it is one way to support your opinion.

  57. Hi liz!

In the essay question regarding big block apartments, by this they mean high rise building, luxury apartments, or communities which have number of buildings with high living standard..?? As in this section i wrote about the communities which have buildings and all the amenities in it… please guide!

    • A block means a building. A block of apartments means a building of apartments. A big block of flats is a high rise building.

        Hello Liz,

Please this is still not clear. What was asked was on large apartment blocks. Is it that the buildings have large flats/apartments or that the buildings itself is large. Please explain.

    • Hi,
I wrote about apartments in general and my view was that living in apartments had more advantages than disadvantages.

I am a little bit confused about the first question “the tendency for human ……”. As it is an opinion essay, Should I give my opinion on whether the popularity of a fashion is a right example for the human beings tendency to copy each other or it’s not and give justifications and reasons for my opinion, and so, I will consider the tendency of human beings to copy each other as a fact and I will discus if the popularity is a prove. Or the questioned means that I should agree or disagree with the phrase the human beings tend to copy each other ?
Another question please. The popularity for fashion and goods means that people tend to put on the same clothes and purchase the same goods.

    Thanks in advance.

    • The question: do you think humans have a tendency to copy each other? That is the question you need to answer. IELTS offer fashion and goods as examples to help you. These examples are about people buying the same clothes and goods.

Thanks a lot. You are extremely helpful. Actually what made me confused was some websites where I found them giving essay examples focusing on why designers replicate the same design and something like. Thanks for your clarification.

        • The word “popularity” refers to customer popularity. So, it’s not really about business owners, it’s about the people who buy the items. This is basically about consumerism, advertising and conformity. People follow media pressure and peer pressure. They often prefer to conform rather than stand out as individuals. It is fuelled by consumerism.
