IELTS Speaking Recent Topic: Sky

This has been a reported topic in speaking this month. It’s a new topic but of course some of the questions will be similar to the topic of weather. Here are some possible questions for this topic.

The Sky

  • Do you ever look at the sky?
  • What do you think about when you look at the sky?
  • Are there often clouds in the sky in your country?
  • Is the sky often overcast?
  • Is star-gazing popular in your country?
  • Are there often spectacular sunsets or sunrises in your country?

Model Answers

  • Question: Do you ever look at the sky?
  • Answer: To be honest, the only time I really pay any attention to the sky is if there is an amazing sunset or if I need to see what the weather’s like. The weather can be changeable where I live, so I sometimes take a quick look at the sky to see if it there are any dark clouds on the horizon and it might rain.
  • Question: Is star-gazing popular in your country?
  • Answer: I wouldn’t say it was popular but there are quite a few people who enjoy it, I suppose. In summer, we often get really clear night skies when you can see a multitude of stars and they’re all incredibly bright. I must say, even I go out and take a look then.
Vocabulary

Here is a useful vocabulary list for this topic. Below is an audio for the vocabulary.

  • overcast = cloudy, no sun is visible
  • a grey sky = overcast, cloudy

  • dark clouds on the horizon = threatening weather in the distance
  • star-gazing = looking at the stars
  • crystal clear night skies = very clear skies at night with excellent visibility
  • cloudless sky = a blue sky without clouds
  • small fluffy clouds = small clouds that do not threaten rain
  • multitude of stars = many stars

I got the same question in my last IELTS, and was taken by surprise thanks to this question “let’s talk about looking at the sky”. As I started talking about more detailed aspects like the stars, celestial bodies and went on with the vastness of space, where I just had to talk about the sky as seen from ground above. Maybe it was the randomness part that got to me, as I was expecting something more objective and to the point. But thanks to that I can be well prepared for the next round of speaking. Thank you Liz for sharing these questions and suggestive answers. It helps a lot.

    • Sounds like you did well answering your questions. You certainly used a great range of topic related vocabulary. A lot of people think the topics will be straight forward such as hobbies, family, travel, sport etc. But in fact, while it is possible to get those topics, it is equally as possible to get happiness, colours, sky, shoes, bags etc. The key is just to speak naturally, chat, be open and give as much as you can. Glad my website is useful 🙂

    Hi.liz
I am very poor at continuous speaking. It takes me a while thinking about ideas while continuous speaking. I am watching on many native speakers videos on a daily basis but still, I am poor.

How to practice speaking part 1,2 and 3?

    Thank you.

  5. Sangeetha Pillai says

    Hi Liz,

While speaking, i end up using “I mean”, “actually”, ‘you know” and other words like that. Will that cause a negative impact on my speaking test?

    • It is 100% fine. The speaking test is informal and natural use of language is preferred. I use “you know” many times while speaking – it’s all fine for IELTS speaking. It is essential in the test that you relax, listen to the question and enjoy talking 🙂

hi liz , rahul here . First of all i would like to thank you for your videos and lectures..
I have one though : As you said that the speaking is an informal language test so can i use the sentence structure of ” yes, i do walk often … ” instead of ” yes, i walk often…” . though i think the first one is not appropriate, i just want to clarify .. thanks ..
