Please complete the lesson before you look at the answers. You can find the lesson on this page: Paraphrasing Lesson

Passage: Ancient Egyptian Powder

Summary of Passage

The pigment (1)………. Egyptian blue, which was formulated (2) ……….. 5,250 years ago, can now be used to (3)……… finger prints on complicated surfaces.  This pigment was used in the painting of statues and tomb wall reliefs in Ancient Egypt. However, it has now been (4)……….. that, when it is it exposed to a (5)……….. light, it emits near-infrared radiation.

  1. known as
    1. you can’t choose the answer “names” because it is grammatically wrong.
  2. about
    1. You can’t have the answer “over” because we don’t know if it is over or under. Therefore, you need to use the word “about”. Another option for paraphrasing would be “approximately”.
  3. identify
  4. revealed / found
    1. Both options are fine.
  5. particular
    1. You must have the correct spelling. If your spelling is wrong, your answer is marked wrong.

I hope you found this lesson useful.

I’ll post more paraphrasing lessons later.

All the best

Liz

These are very easy questions that don’t appear in real IELTS.

    • No, they don’t appear in IELTS. This website isn’t about practice tests. It is about building language, developing skills and gaining awareness. This means the lessons are at different levels to achieve development step by step. If you want only practice tests, get the IELTS Cambridge test books which are authentic tests published by IELTS.

  34. Maria Makurat says

    Thank you Liz!

    These exercises help a lot!
I was just wondering for 3 if “find” is also a good synonym?

    Thanx! Kind regards Maria

    • It is possible to use the verb “find” with “fingerprints” and it would work in this context. However, it hasn’t been listed as an answer because it wasn’t an option in the list of possible words.

      • Maria Makurat says

        Hey!
Thank you for your reply! Ah I see. I also think the IELTS rule is that one is not allowed to change the words they give you to fill in the blanks right?
        Warm regards,

        Maria

        • You have to read the instructions. If it says “modify the verb” then you can change it. If no instructions are given then you can’t alter it. Grammar will be your friend in IELTS reading and listening to help you choose the right answer.

  35. Krishna Pahlajani says

    Hi Liz,
I got 4/5, want to know why can’t “observed” be there for 4th one.

    Thanks

    • There are three words that might fit this sentence with similar meaning – I hope you note that I use the word similar – I didn’t use the word “the same”. They do not have completely the same meaning. So, you have the choice of “observe”, “found” and “revealed”.
At this point, you look at the passage and see the correct meaning “…More recently they discovered that it emits near-infrared radiation…” – the word “discover” is more similar to “revealed” or “found”.
After that you then check the grammar in the question sentence:
“However, it has now been (4)……….. that, …”. You will see that there is a verb missing and the verb must be past participle.
The word “revealed” is past participle. The word “found” is past participle. The word “observe” is not.
This means there are only two possible possible answers “revealed” or “found”.
Always check the grammar!!! The sentence must be grammatically correct when completed.

      • Muhammad zahidulhaq says

Thanks Ms Liz, the best part of available practice material is that getting results on same time & valuable feedback from your end as well.

Thanks for being helpful to everyone.

  36. Josue Devalcin says

Thanks Liz you are such a good person and teacher and your website is well conceived to help students all over the world. I am in Haiti and will not be able to buy the IELTS by cambridge for real test practice and I’ll pass the Academic test on Sept. 15. Do you think all these practice materials though not cambridge over the internet will help?
I do lots of practice to be on target.
    Thanks again for your commitment

    Josue

    • They will certainly help. However, you must do at least one full practice test published by IELTS. The British Council have one free test that you can download, google it or go straight to their website.

  37. Nato Goliadze says

  54. Hi Liz,
If I decide to answer listening and reading in uppercase. Then how about some answers in reading test where answer options could be in lower case , like a,b,c or i,ii,iii,iv,v.
Is it OK to use options based answers as it is and rest of the answers in uppercase?

    • I would use capitals I / II / VI / A / C / B. But roman numerals are numbers, not letters, so I’m sure using “i” and “vi” is also fine.

  57. anismila says

thank you mam. i too got all right

  58. ANUJ SHARMA says

Hello Liz, In 4, you have used found/revealed. Can we use “observe” instead of found?

    • The meaning (observe) is right but the grammar would be wrong. Your sentences must be grammatically correct when the word has been added. The correct option would be “observed” but that is not available in the list. Therefore, you can’t use that word.

  59. Barinder says

    Hi Liz

Got all correct answers. Thank you so much for this awesome site.
I have speaking test day after tomorrow, so could you please suggest some last minute preparation tips or any specific topics ?
One more thing, I used ‘well’ and ‘you know’ in speaking quite frequently. Do you think using this has any effect on band score ?

    Thanks!

  60. hi liz,
there is a question of task 2 that some says that children should start learning a foreign language from primary school.
my query is that as English is a foreign language in my country can I only talk about it in my essay or i need to be general.
    thank u in advance

    • Don’t over think. This is not about which language. It is about starting to learn a foreign language in primary school or waiting until the child is in middle school. This essay is about the age that a child should start to learn a foreign language. So, it’s about age and language acquisition.
