  4. Hi😊,
Today I had my speaking test and I was asked the following questions.

    Part 2

And explain why it is important in your country.

    Part 3

I cant recollect the follow up questions. It was about job changes, people having two jobs.

Question for you: In some areas the Examiner seemed to agree with my opinion and in some stages she asked me β€œwhy” in a little weird fashion. I wonder if I did something wrong or I condescend the examiner or maybe I am exaggerating. What do you think?

    Thanks for your lessons.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The speaking test is informal and the examiner will interact with you in a natural manner – agreeing with your opinion or challenging it. You are not marked on your ideas in IELTS speaking.

  6. Hi,

I gave my speaking test today

    Part 1

It went well for me, just at 2 places teacher said , now we are talking about general so i gave more general examples else i was talking about how would we choose.

Do you think that is a negative thing?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The examiner was guiding you to talk about the world in general – it’s fine for him/her to do that.

  7. Hi Liz,
Let me add a follow-up comment.

    I did IELTs – GT

1-10 and 30-40 were written questions and both were ONE WORD ONLY. Others were MCQs and there was a map to mark. One answer keeps coming back to me as it was “pizza”…. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I never came across that during the practise tests.

as for the tips, I’d like to ask all those who are getting ready for their exams to follow the Cambridge books. I followed books borrowed from British Council specially Exam preparation books (there are huge piles of books there…please go and get them). In the listening test I got the audio clips with the male voice (whose voice is like Sir John Hurt’s) and it was very familiar as I have prepared with his audio clips before. Getting used to their voices was very helpful to me.

Also when marking the map, I drew the path on the map itself when the person says “turn right to see the main stage” likewise….which helped me to track the correct location.

    Reading ————
4 advertisements were given to identify given information/facts….there were 8-10 facts answers were repeated. Letter to be written on the place.
A description of a company startup was given to fill the blanks. ONE WORD ONLY
lastly a lengthy article on “History of Pens” were given to identify the headings(letter to be written), TRUE?FALSE?NOT GIVEN questions followed. Another set of questions with ONE WORD ONLY

Letter: Your child id going on a school trip, overseas for 3 days. The head master is looking for parents to join the trip. Write a letter to state that you would like to join it. Mention
    1. Why you would like to join the trip
    2. How you can be helpful to others
    3. Ask some general questions on the trip

Essay: Some believe that modern technology has made the life of workers easier while others oppose. Discuss both these opinions and give your own idea.

Thanks again Liz. I learnt a lot from you. in case I fail to get desired band, I’ll be visiting your blog again. Please keep up the good work. One last question, is it possible to review and upgrade the band it one is confident about the exam?

    Thanks again.

    • Thanks for sharing and well remembered πŸ™‚ A remark isn’t usually advisable for listening and reading because the scores are based on right or wrong answers, rather than examiner interpretation. For speaking and writing, if you feel you fulfilled the requirements of the higher levels and exceeded the word count in writing, then it’s possible to consider a remark. Also, if you didn’t write a conclusion for task 2 or an overview for task 1 in writing, then usually it isn’t worth the remark. So, just think carefully when you get your results. No remark is guaranteed to be successful. Fingers crossed for you πŸ™‚

      • Thanks Liz…. I have a knack for remembering things πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I’ll ask for a review in writing if I get a lower band….thanks again

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It would be good for others if you share your experience of what it is like doing the test on a computer. Glad my website was helpful πŸ™‚

  11. Hi Liz,
First of all let me thank you for the awesome work you are doing here by sharing invaluable tips and help with IELTs. I came across your site and you tube videos when I was looking for online resources to get ready for the exam. All these were very helpful to me as I did self-study not having enough time to go for a class.

    I did IELTs – GT

These are the questions I got.
    Speaking————-PART I ———-
    1. What do you do? Do you study or work?
    2. What is you job?
    3. Why did you choose that path ?
    4. How was your first day at the office?

    5. Let’s talk about being on time. Do you wear a watch normally?
    6. What do you think the opinion here in Sri Lanka about coming on time say for an appointment?
    7. Do you come on time for events?
    8. How would you like to wait for others to come meet you?

    9. Let’s talk about teacher. Do you remember your primary school teachers?
    10. Who is your favorite teacher?
    11. Do you think that teachers in the past say in your mothers time are different from present day teachers?
    12. Have you ever thought about being a teacher?

    Cue Card————PART II———
A quiet place you like to be (I was prepared for this as I looked up the recent topics in your blog. I talked about my home “non-stop”)

    PART III———-
    1. Do you generally like to be quiet places?
    2. Why do you think that country side is considered to be quieter than cities?
    3. Is it possible that cities may have some quiet places?
    4. Do you think that cities need quiet places like parks?
    5. Some places say houses are very noisy. Why is that as you think?

    As for the tips,
for speaking I wore a frock (having all my denims misplaced as I live in two places) and a little make-up (just a tiny bit) and the examiner (a lady) took a good look at me which made me feel thankful for my outfit. I know it does not affect my score, still I felt I made a good first impression visually… πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I was called in immediately and was out by 1 PM. Is that possible? I was surprised that my test was finished so quickly. Will that affect my score? It was like the Examiner was in a hurry. She quickly jumped from one question to another in the middle of my answers some times.

I watched (and re-watched) all your videos and read almost all the blog posts and specially comments where people have shared their experiences. All these were immensely helpful for me. I worked hard for 2 months and I need to get band 8 in each. Fingers crossed now…. πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ You’ve made a good point about clothing. It doesn’t affect your score, but it can affect your confidence. So, wear something that is comfortable but makes you feel good about yourself. The IELTS speaking test is no longer than 14 mins and no shorter than 11 mins. It’s normal for the examiner to interrupt your answers. Glad my website was useful. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

  14. Open doors says:

    Hello dear Liz,

I finished my speaking exam today and will take the other 3 sections next Saturday, which will be 11/8/2018.

Speaking it went well thankfully and I am satisfied with my performance. However, I forget to use idioms, it didn’t come to my mind while I was expressing my thoughts to answer the questions I was asked. Will that prevent me from getting a band score of 7+ ?

    The topics were:

    part 1:
questions about writing.. what do you write currently? did you enjoy writing as a child? and what would you be writing in the future? … (those weren’t the exact words used .. just the idea)

also questions about outdoor activities.. what outdoor activities do you enjoy? which outdoor activities you enjoyed as a child? do you think of working outdoors? …

    part 2

Talk about a story you were told by someone. who is it? how did it affect you? and so on

    part 3

questions about story telling and technology …

Here is my experience, I hope it’s helpful.
Your website and videos are extremely helpful by the way and thanks a million for your efforts. πŸ˜€

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is best to avoid idioms in IELTS. They are overused or often used incorrectly. Also people frequently use out-dated idioms such as “cool as a cucumber”. Instead, just use phrasal verbs – they are examples of idiomatic language.

Ms. Liz I had mistakenly put a different unit for measurement on task 1 for 1 Parameter and for task 2 I misspelled one word.

Would this greatly affect my grade?

Listening and reading went well. Not so sure about the writing, I ran out of time and rushed the conclusion and did not get time to review my work.
The exam went smoothly but we had to be at the venue by 7:30, I got there by 7:15. The staff running the test only got there at 7:30. We then stood until 9:15 and started at 9:45.

Thank you for your videos. I wish I had found them sooner in my prepartion

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ That’s a long wait – hope you weren’t too tired for your test. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

  19. It was my test in GENERAL category on 2nd August 2018.
Writing task : Some people say that technology has positive effects on workers while there are others who think that it has some drawbacks on workers. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

  20. Hi!
So… this is my contribution πŸ™‚

But, first of all, I want to thank you so so much, Liz, for the effort you do by having this incredible website. I managed to arrive confident and prepared to face the exam after having understood everything and practiced a lot thanks to all the information, lessons and model answers (especially these!) here.

    Test date: 02/08/2018
    Location: BogotΓ‘, Colombia

    Part 1:
Typical questions about home, like “do you live in a house or a flat?, what’s your favorite room?, do you plan to live there in the future?”.

Algo, about punctuality: do you usually wear a watch?, do you think it’s important to be on time?, are you ever late for anything?, how do you feel when others are late?

And the one that I didn’t expect but was kinda enjoyable: letters and cards. Some like “do you often write something by hand?, do you think computers might replace handwriting one day?, do you prefer getting cards or emails in special occasions? why?”.

    Part 2:
Describe a useful math lesson that you remember learning as a child.
    Cue card:
    What it was
    How did you learn it
Was it easy or difficult to learn

    Part 3:
In general, questions about math lessons in adults’ lifes, how people can improve in maths, what could teachers do to encourage students to learn maths, and so on. Then, some related to technology, regarding jobs and if technology will be better than humans in the future.

    Task 1:
Just one line graph about the percentage of students having five specific problems in university during three particular years.

    Task 2:
Demand of food is increasing worldwide.

Which is a cause of this?
What measures could the international community take in order to improve the situation?
(I’m paraphrasing this last one, but that was the sense/idea of the question).

    That’s the general idea.
I hope this will be helpful for anyone πŸ˜€

Now… 13 days that will feel endless, haha.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

      • ArshDeep Maridka says:

You are so good. You help us and like another you didn’t prefer any charges. Thanx a lot. I am not a native linguistic person but i’m trying and i hope i”ll learn it one day

  21. Hi liz

    2 August ,Academic . India

There was a question for task 2 writing.

I cover point like less qualification/experience/not physically strong to do job/accidents at work place/decisions making in emergency etc.

Please revert soon im really concerned

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The topic of old age and work is about older people applying for jobs. This means your essay was off topic. That will affect your score for Task Response which is 25% of your task 2 marks, but it won’t affect your score for the other marking criteria.

  22. Hey Liz

  24. MONA COUR says:

    Hi Liz,

I took my IELTS speaking test in Delhi today afternoon. I opted for General Training Module.

Part 1 Questions were about myself, my work, why did I choose this work? How did I feel on the first day of work? Do you plan before going on vacations? What is important to be done before going on vacation? When and where did you last go on a trip which is is memorable to you? Do you plan to go for vacation in the near future? If yes, where?

Part 2 Cue Card was to talk about my childhood friend- What’s the name of the friend? How did you meet? What would you do together? And explain why do I still remember her? and follow up question was that, Am I still in touch with any of my childhood friends?

Then Part 3 Questions were all to do with the Involvement of technology in teenagers’ life, Their interaction with friends, whether they listen to the advice of their parents or their friends, should children be having less number of friends or more and why? What is the difference of having friendship earlier and now and lastly the role of internet in friendship. Whether it is good or bad?

My examiner was very polite and made me feel very comfortable. And I also tried giving all the answers naturally with a flow. However when I was explaining the last point of Part 2, she stopped me. Would it effect my band as I couldn’t answer the last part fully? And further I was just asked 4-5 Questions in Part 3. Is that enough? Although I tried giving full answers with expalanation and examples, still i fear…

Please answer my queries so that I know where do I stand… Thanks

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The examiner MUST stop you when your time has run out in part 2. It’s fine and a normal part of the test. It doesn’t affect your score. There are no set number of questions for part 3.

  27. IELTS General – New Delhi, India – 02/08/2018

The listening and reading were okay-ish in-terms of difficulty. However, I would like to intimate fellow readers to be vigilant as nowadays there are some small questions which have chances of being missed due to the conversation being relatively small. I missed 4 questions in PART – 3 listening as I was under the impression that it the conversation just started. It was regarding two people in which we had to select whether they will be doing the designated task in the question together or independently.

    Writing – General

Task – 1: Write a letter to the principal of the school in which your child is going to international trip. The school had asked some parents to join. Write a letter to express your willingness. Include:

    1) What can you do? [I wrote that my son is going with 7 friends who keep coming to our house and are known to me. As such, I can deal with on my own and reduce the burden)
    2) Why do you want to go? [As no doctor was accompanying the students and I am a trained paramedic. As such, in the case of an emergency I will be there.]
    3) Ask questions pertaining to the trip? [Questions about whether students will get tetanus shots, will they undergo pre-departure medical, when will the final details of the plan be shared with us.]

Task 2: (A tricky questions as per me) – New technology improvs the life of workers while some disagree. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

I have a doubt regarding the task 2. It talks about “NEW TECHNOLOGY”, I feel we had to write that the new technology improves the lives of workers. I wrote about the old generation of computers were hampering the health of employees while now the new improvisation is a good thing. (For against) It is hard for the employees to deal with the changes happening at a rapid pace which impacts their performance. Do you think I achieved the task properly?

  28. Hi Liz,
Test Date : 1st Aug,2018 General Training, Place: Hyderabad

The examiner didn’t ask me any of the usual ques for Part 0, that you mentioned in your video except for my full name. She also took my ID when she was escorting me inside.
Throughout the test she only asked me questions related to order/orderliness, in part 1 as well as part 3.

    Part 1
General Q about house/appartment? Favourite room in the house? Why?
Who do spend free time with: family or friends?
Do more people live in cities these days? Why?
A city you want to visit? Why?
again some q about order in cities…
Ques related to order in life? why it is imp?
Do all people have order in life?

    Cue Card:
Talk about an item you lost?
How it is important to you? What is the item?
    Who gave it to you?
what were your feelings on losing it?

    Part 3:
    Completely about order…
Why do people keeping losing important things? &
What kind of things do people keep losing?
What are benefits of having an orderly society?
do you think creativity does not develop if you have order? Why
Why do some people not like living in orderly societies?

I kept on speaking for part 2 without fumbling and naturally. She asked me to stop, I guess 2 min were over. That I am satisfied with. I do have some doubt for Part 3.
I couldn’t immediately answer in part 3, I may have stammered a little, and especially for a topic like order, I found it difficult to answer the questions. She prompted for 1 or 2 questions. Will it affect my band score? by how much?
Overall I am dissatisfied with my performance.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your score is based on your overall performance and your overall level of English from the answers you gave. The examiner does allow for nerves. It’s normal for the examiner to encourage the candidate to expand on answers in order to produce more language.

      • Thanks Liz πŸ™‚

Also, the topics I got for writing

        Task 1:
The city council is planning to pull down a historical building in your city due to lack of funding. Write a letter asking them not to do that.
        Imp of the place,
        How it can be used?
        How to get funding?

Task 2: Some believe technology has increased social interaction. Others do not.
Adv. and Disadv. Give ur opinion.

Q3 – What is your favorite type of food?
Q4- do many people in your country enjoy eating out?
Q5-have you tried other cuisines? why did u like/dislike it?
Q6- do you think parents play an important role in development of child than teachers?
Q7- Talk about when you helped your friend/colleague
Q8- leadership/skills topic (cant remember exact question)
Q9- do you think global co-operation is important

write letter to you friend about a book you are reading.
    why should she read it
    where can she purchase it
    whats special about this book

    Part 2
Dont remember exact question. it was about road safety.

    part 1 :
    1- usual introductions
2- talking about exercise (whether I’m doing exercises, people are doing enough exercise and …..)
3- talking about sleep (how much I sleep, do elder people sleep more than the younger one and …. )

    cue card
describe a development you would like to see in a public place in your hometown
    – where
    – what kind of developments

    part 3 :
general questions about public places e.g. ‘what kind of public places you’d rather go’ or ‘do elder people and younger prefer the same kind of public places’ and…

    my experience :
the examiner was very polite and friendly,
I tried and hopefully talked as fluent as possible which I think I’ve done enough for that, also I used a variety of complex sentences,
one thing to mention is that while I was trying to speak about my hometown, I neglected some useful information simply because I was thinking with myself that the examiner is also from my hometown so he knows them.

    dear Liz,
while I was going thru’ part 2 I talked for about 90 seconds, then the examiner asked 2 little questions which helped me go as long as 2 minutes. Also at part 3, I think I probably didn’t elaborate enough (maybe talking 30 seconds for each question), and again the examiner made my sentences last a lil bit longer for instance by asking why, when and…
Now my question is that; are these questions that the examiner asked are going to have a negative impact on my scores?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It is normal for the examiner to ask such questions in that way. When you give your answers, the examiner does NOT mark your ideas or the information you give. So, when you talk about your hometown, you are being marked on the English you produce. Always say as much as you can.

I had my speaking test today and before posting my question I would like share an unwanted event that is I was 10mins late to report and after I entered in the exam room then first question the examiner asked was about punctuality, so, I understood that he was very disturbed that I was late. Although my exam was good but I sensed that is it going to affect my exam score? Plz answer. I’m really worried. Ok. Ow the question. Part one- punctuality, abt home town, how often does it rain, if I will be asked to choose a place for living in between dry or wet place what I will choose, part two- something that my friend has done and I also want to do. Part three- do u think the young people of this day are getting more chance to try new things then the young of past, how easy it is to try new things, is it the responsibility of school to tell a student to set their goal, the decision of people take are more self-centered?

    • Thanks for sharing. The topic of “punctuality” is an IELTS topic. Don’t worry about it. Your speaking test is recorded and can be remarked by a senior examiner in the UK if you feel your results do not reflect how well you spoke in your test.

WT2/ Some people think that children should start formal school as early as possible while others believe that they should not start school until they become 7 years old.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

WT1/ It was about describing a Map /The development that happened in a city in 1950 and now in 5 criteria (business, residential , main roads, government building , bridge)
and the population in 1950 was 20,000 and now 200,000.

R/ It was the most stressful part for me . The 1st passage was about a research in how the animals sleep in different ways and gave examples about them.
The second passage was about History of Roma and their culture and much more.
I cant remember the last passage.

L/ wasn’t that much difficult the record was so clear but still sec 3 and 4 run quickly.

I had exactly the same question as well here in Libya.

Liz, I am quite confused regarding my writing task 1.

The question is β€œThe plans show the city in 1950 and the city now”

My question is: Is it correct the my intro was like this, β€œThe two diagrams illustrate the changes that OCCURED in a city in almost 70 decades.”

Is it correct if it’s already in the past tense? Coz I think it’s just a plan and not yet done? And also I pit changes that occured even it is not given in the task that there are changes that happened, although you can see it in the maps given. Maps are also diagrams right?

I am really confused. Pls do enlighten me.

        Thank u Liz!!!

        • Your introduction should be written: “The plans show the changes in a city between 1950 and the present day”. The changes did not occur in 1950. The changes have occurred since 1950. You then use past tense to describe how the city was in 1950 and the present tense to show how it is today for the details in the body paragraph. Don’t panic too much about grammar tenses, they are only one aspect of the grammar marks and task 1 is only worth 33% anyway.

  40. I took the GT test on July 28th in USA. For the speaking:

    1) Do you work or study?
    2) Why did you chose that job?
    3)Do you like the rain?
    4) Would you rather live in a wet or dry climate? Why?
5)Do you like traveling in the rain?
    6) Are you in contact with any animals?
    7) Is it good for children to have pets? Then follow up question on why it helps with responsibility when I said it helps them become more responsible
    Part 2- cue card:
Pick an animal that is interesting, tell where it lives, when you first become interested and why you like it
    Part 3:
Questions about conservation of animals – what the government could do, what private citizens can do, and if it is important to conserve animals and why you think so. I don’t remember the exact individual questions.

I’m a native English speaker and I really wish I had prepared more for the speaking section. It was the only part I did not because I figured I would sail through it and I do not feel very confident. I ran out of things to say with the animal topic for the two minutes – my mind was blank and right after the test I could think of so many things I could have talked about (it was nerves, I’m a shy person, even though it was an easy topic). The interviewer did prompt me and seemed relieved when I spoke more…but I’m still worried. Oh well I guess if I don’t score high enough it is something I can focus on for next time.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ To prepare for speaking, you must prepare ideas for lots of topics. The ideas are not really based on knowledge, but on your own feelings, past memories, wishes and opinions. It’s normal to be really nervous in your first test and it’s common for people to book two or even three tests for this reason. See my main speaking page for topics, tips and model answers: http://ieltsliz.com/ielts-listening/

I find your tutorials very helpful to understand the key factors the examiner is looking for. You have a really charming and composed way of teaching.
I have sat for the Academic exam twice earlier, but couldn’t score more than 7 each time though my other module scores were pretty higher(Overall 8). This time I’ve had to sit for GT for immigration purpose and I’m hoping to score higher than 7 in Writing, provided I could follow and write keeping your suggestions in mind!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Let me know when your results arrive – fingers crossed πŸ™‚

      • Hi Liz, my results are out and I’m really disappointed. Can you plz advise me if it’s rational to expect a 6 in writing while I have L-8.5, R-9? I don’t believe my writing was a 6 standard. But the local immigration agents informed me earlier, that recently they have been receiving complaints of purposely giving low scores in either writing or speaking so that the candidates desperate for immigration have to repeat the tests! I’m not really sure if that was the score I deserved while I was even more aware of the structures and vocabs to be used this time, provided I scored 7 twice before already and that too in Academic topics.

        • It is very possible to only get 6 in writing with high scores in the other skills. This is due to the marking criteria of writing which is different to speaking. To hit band 7 or above in writing, having good English is NOT enough. The examiner who marks your writing does NOT know why you are taking IELTS. Thank you Liz your website is very helpful, especially this page.
    I have a question.
Something unusual happened during my test when I was passing 3 parts.
Just at the beginning, couple minutes before starting listening, we lost power and after a while, the conductors of the test decided to start from reading then move to write and after if the problem with electricity is fixed move to listening.
And it went according to their plan. However, it was pretty dark in the room and I did not like the idea of changing the sequence of tasks because I need a high score in the Listening section so I decided to write a complaint.
So the question is it going to change anything? and what is the procedure for this complaint? I would be really grateful if you could answer this.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ You need to contact IELTS Official or your local test center about submitting a complaint. I’m not sure if it will have any effect. Unfortunate problems can occur – it’s really bad luck.

    – when you were a child, did you have a fav teacher?
    – did you ever want to become a teacher?
    – why yes/ no ?
    – do you think teachers have difficult or easy job?
    – why yes/ no
So part one was more Or less about teachers

    Part 2
Some ways you use to concentrate on work or study

    Part 3
    Regarding topic from part 2.
-What kinds of job positions require us to concentrate
    – what employers can do to boost concentration in workplace
    – do you think that people concentrate easier when in quiet places or noisy

    – holidays in Portugal – guy phoned travel agency to get an option- he wanted to go surfing a with friends and was looking for a holiday destination and accomodation
    – rick and Emilia were preparing to semester at school and they were talking about their decisions -multiple answears
-meeting with school director some kind of induction day where he was talking about recently opened courses , why the courses duration were shortened etc
    – the last was about construction in native area of Westen Australia – some kind of bay – that’s fill in the brackets

    – 4 types of buildings from previous century – match topics question
    – traveling to Australia – mainly about what you cannot bring and restrictions – that was t/f/ng

    – and another one about workplace strikes
    – last but not least of course long article about laughter
    – this exercise related to matching headings but was fairly easy to be honest

    Writing :

Take 1; in your area there is a historic building that is about to be pulled down. Write a letter to (as far as I remember) director of the project explaining :
    – why it shouldn’t be demolished
    – propose a new solution
    – how are you going to collect funds

    Task 2:
Technology influences our social behaviour. Sometimes positively and negatively. Discuss both views.
(This one I don’t remember exactly but this is the key thought)

To sum up, I think overall speaking and the rest were easy tasks. Maybe a bit more of a struggle with essay and letter. It difficult even for natives I believe to read the topic and I 40min produce a great looking almost taken from journal – essay. It very tough to gather necessary ideas and produce something great. Otherwise, comparing to my previous ielts it was way better;)

Listening and Reading- I felt more time constrained than when I practiced at home. Hoping to get at least above 35 because I never got less than that during my practice tests.

Writing Task 1- It was the map of a city before and after renovation. I ended up using 25min which was a bit disappointing but I feel I ticked off all the boxes in terms of TA, LR, CC and GR. Hoping to get at least a 7/7.5

Writing Task 2- Some people argue that formal education should be started for children as early as possible while other think that it should not be started until 7years of age. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

I got a bit anxious in this task because I had already used up 5min to complete Task 1. Hence, I didn’t plan which was a huge mistake. Also, I wasn’t able to re-check this section but my word count was pretty good. My points were:

For early formal education: competitive students, waste of time and money if we don’t start early.

For late education: Creativity and expression, confidence

A quick question for Liz: For my 2nd body Para if I wrote a sentence like, ‘ On the other hand, starting early education would mean a decrease in creativity.’ I wrote this point for late education but realised later that it was a disadvantage of early education. So will this affect my TR negatively?

  50. Thank you Liz for creating this page. It has helped me immensely!
I finished by exam today 28th July in Singapore – general kelts.

Listening – currently where do you live in this city and how far is it from here.
Why do u think it’s a good place
Do you think it’s a fun place to live
Let’s talk about excercise ? Do u think you will do more excercise in future.do you think young people in India do enough excercise.
2- where would u like to live and work – mention why that place / how do you know about this place /what more details you know about this place.

7)Do you think providing such consumer care service online beneficial?
8)(I don’t quite remember this question as time was up )related to global customer service
My overall test was good! The examiner did like my answers (I guess) as she was smiling often and nodded too.Though I found this topic (customer care service n commerce)a bit hard as I am more of a “science and technology” person(I had mentioned that in the beginning of my introduction)
However Liz I have one doubt, as time was almost up my examiner (who i observed was watching the timer continuously in the last part)just asked me the very last question of the test and before i could answer, she said my time is up..Would this affect my band score ?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ No, it won’t affect your score. In fact, the examiner should ask a question that you don’t have time to answer. So, don’t worry about it – not your mistake and won’t affect your score πŸ™‚

  78. Vijayalakshmi Srinivasan says:

    Hello Elizabeth,
First, I would like to thank you so much for your lessons. It helped a lot for my IELTS exam which I took on 18th & 19th of July, 2018. I had Speaking test on 18th and other components on 19th. I want to share my IELTS experience with you all. It is bit lengthy, but I hope it will be of some use.

The tip for speaking that I found most useful is to SPEAK AS IF YOU ARE CHATTING WITH THE EXAMINER !! Trust me people, it really helps. I felt ease while speaking, my thoughts were flowing and I was able to speak without any gaps in between.
After asking about my personal details about my current living location, few more things about my city, the seasons I like and my preferred climate and few more common questions in section 1, the examiner moved to section 2 in which the cue card was to talk about the thing which made me happy, why, when and people who were with me during this. In section 3 the examiner discussed more about my opinion about happiness, if money can buy happiness, why some rich people are not happy, what sort of happiness more gives to a person and few more related questions. I think overall my speaking interview lasted about 15 mins or little less.

Section 1 was about convo between a woman and a real estate agent guy who is looking for renting a property in town for few months in the city.

Section 2 was about two students talking about music therapy and its related data when they tested on animals. This section had some scope for keen observation.

Section 3 was also related to music such that how kids can be involved with music and two people were brainstorming about types of activities that are related to music for nursery group kids. This section was little bit challenging.

Section 4 was about a person explaining people about various photographers and their early work in a photography museum. This section had straightforward answers if observed with good ears!!

All the sections had just ONE WORD AND/OR NUMBERS, Pick the right alphabet answers only.

Paragraph 1 was about discovery of GRAPHITE and making of PENCIL and its related stuff.
Paragraph 2 was about Sports, Olympics, the sports aids and few speculations about the regulations to be followed In sports.
Paragraph 3 was about the various theories about PLANET FORMATION.

All the READING paragraphs were quite lengthy, I was able to finish this section 15 mins before the time as I had good reading practice and I used the remaining time for my nature call :). But it is advised not to take breaks in between the test as extra time won’t be provided.

Task 1 was to describe, and compare the pie chart data about the social media usage among men and women in Australia in the year 2011 and 2014. For this essay I wasted few minutes in thinking about the way to compare the data but somehow I managed to finish both the essays on time.

Task 2 was about why people don’t take environmental issues seriously inspite of many warning given by scientists and why don’t they save energy in their daily life. This task asked to analyse the possible causes for this issue and possible solutions in our own opinion.
I was able to compensate the time in task 2 which I wasted in task 1.

But ideally spend 20-22 mins for task 1 and remaining time for task 2. Keep at least 5 mins time for checking your answers to make some alterations before submitting your answers.

I am hoping for a band score not less than 7.0 in each component. Let’s see πŸ™‚ I will post my scores once I receive them.

    Part 1:
    Where do you live?
    Do you work or study?
How often do you use your phone?
What apps in your phone do you usually use?
    Why do you use them?
What apps you think you would need in the future?
What other appliances have you got at home?
How are these appliances differ from that in the past?
***Then, the examiner inserted this question, which I think was a bit off our topic***
Have you got pets at home?
What wild animal have you seen?

    Part 2:
Describe a piece of technology (not a computer) that you use.
    What is it?
    When do you use it?
    How do you use it?
    And why is it important?

    Part 3:
How is technology different now than in the past?
Who do you think benefits the most from technology?
How can the younger generation help older people cope up with technology?
Aside from the youth, who else can assist older population with technology?

***PS: At the end of the exam I was told by the examiner that I sounded like his sister which I didn’t expect for him to say. I got confused but hopefully it was a good compliment. He politely offered his hand for a hand shake. I told him then, “My hands are literally ice-cold. Can you feel it?”, he laughed and said, “Don’t worry, you did well.”***

    Hi Liz,

I had my LRW on july 7 at new jersey center.
Listening and reading were moderately difficult. I feel posting anything about them won’t make much of a difference.

For GT writing i had the following tasks

    Task 1
You are attending a night college. You are not happy about a course you are doing.
Write a letter to the director
    Explain what your course is
Why you are not happy about it
Tell the director what you want them to do

    Task 2
Many think that people these days are not as fit and active as they used to be in the past
What do you think are the reasons for it?
What do you think can be done for it?

Thanks a lot liz. Your website is amazing.

  107. Hello Ma’am,
I am a great admirer of your benevolent work , thank you for sharing all the valuable tips to prepare for IELTS exam.

Yesterday i wrote my L/R/W tests, but i am very confused about ‘task achievement’ part. My writing task 2 question was somewhere similar to one of your shared topics on your blog.here it is:

    Q. The world of work is changing rapidly. Working conditions today are not the same as before and people no longer rely on taking one job for life.

Discuss the possible causes for these changes and give your suggestions on how people should prepare for work in the future.

IN MY ANSWER,i had two long body paragraphs with examples and supporting ideas, wih second one explaining the preventive measures to overcome this situation and the first para explained the problems that it cause to the employees( in this i mentioned something like : since working methodologies and techniques in the companies are changing year after year as a result of which companies hire new talent by replacing the existing employees which leads to unemployment and job insecurities )

Ma’am i think i misunderstood a part of task it asked for causes and i wrote the consequences, but in my answer i somewhere mentioned that “because of change in working methodologies and technologies it causes job insecurities” .
I hope you got my concern and please tell me is it gonna effect the Yask Achievement?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ This is about the reasons people can’t depend on having one job for life as people used to do in the past. IELTS explain this is because work conditions continue to change. You are right. One cause is the pace at which technology changes. Companies have to adapt to keep up technology and changing markets, and this can affect people’s job stability. To prepare for the constantly changing work requirements and lack of stability, people need to take every opportunity to learn new skills which can be easily transferable from job to job. Task response is not only about your ideas – it’s about how you use them and how you present them to answer the task given. Your ideas sound fine, but it really depends on how they were used. Try not to worry about it now – good luck with your results πŸ™‚ For all students – please note that I haven’t seen the actual essay question from IELTS – all my comments are based on the question as it is reported above.

    • What was the task 1 topic. Can you explain please

    Hi Liz and all,

    – tell what you like about the course
    – what problem you have in the facilities provided
    – suggest on what can be done to resolve it
    – Some people tell that to reduce traffic and pollution, government should increase the tax on the petrol (gasoline)

Would there is more benefits than the drawback?

    Part 1:

Which is your favourite room? and why?
Would you be changing your house in future?

Tell about a attire that you were wearing for a special occasion?
-What was the attire and special occasion?
    -Where you bought it?
-What did others tell about it?

Why in few jobs employers require their employees to wear uniform?
Why few jobs required uniform? I spoke about police for this answer, so examiner started to asked related questions

Questions on western countrries influence and globalisation in fashion market
Do you think people can change from their tradition?

    Describe the job
Tell him why you think he should apply

    Task 2
Some people believe young children should be enrolled in nursery School before going to primary school, other believe it’s good for young children to stay with their family. Discuss both views and give your opinion

I wrote well but didn’t have time to look thoroughly after writing.

Thank you Liz. Your site is resourceful.

  115. Hi Liz,
Thank you for this very informative website. I had taken my exam today here in Dammam, KSA, four modules in just one day (too exhausted). Overall, I’m worried of my reading and writing exam. As expected, I struggled in matching headings while my writing seems lacking in word counts. But I followed your suggestion to make it sure that all required task must be answered. and to observe the structure.

Listening – Quite easy except on diagram. The conversation was about a beach resort reservation. (I guess I perfectly answered 1 to 25)

Reading – For 1 to 27 (I have high hope that I had only few mistakes)

Writing Task 1. You heard that your friend need a job and you offered a job which you know that he/she will qualified. (I can’t remember the exact question)

I were able to use several less common words and linking words. I answered all the task given.

Writing Task 2 – Some people think that young children are better to be in nursery schools before primary schools. Others people think that it is better for the young children to with their families all day. (the wordings are not exactly the same)

    Speaking –

Part 1. Do you live in a house or in apartment.
    Which room is your favorate
Do you plan to transfer a house in the future?

Cue card: Talk about a change of mind that you made recently. When? How? and the result.

Part 3 – Most of the questions are related to change of mind.
Which one you prefer? gradual change or rapid change?

For speaking I could say that I aced this part. There were a lot of less common words came out from my mouth, such as. commanding view of the the sea, lush green forest, cultivated rice field, evolve, technological development, inevitable, intuition, financial matter, my apartment is just a stone throw away from the the fish market. etc. (I saw the hand of the examiner raising a thumbs up every time I hit a less common words)

Looking forward to score Band 7 at minimum or else I have to retake.

    More power to your site.

Task 2… In some countries, the age difference between parents and children is greater than in the past. Do you think the advantages outweighs the disadvantages.

Trusting in God for good band scores.

  117. hi
I just came back from the speaking test
these are the questions I got asked
part 1: about apartments and building and where my favorite room is \ maps and directions
part 2: a time I had helped someone and how that made me feel + when and what
part 3: about helping friends and how grandparents help their grandchildren
    how countries should cooperate internationally
if everyone spoke the same language would there be harmony in the world?
also, I have a question if the examiner writes sth while you’re speaking is that bad?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ It makes no difference to your score what the examiner writes down. Most examiners are making a note of time and not your answers. Your score is not decided until the recording device is switched off and you have exited the room.

    Hi everyone,
I’ve just finished my speaking test in Penang, Malaysia.

In part 1 the examiner asked me several questions from various topis: study, work, my friends at university, physical activity, sports, my favorite sport, safety of sports for children in my country, my opinion about animals, keeping animals in zoo, my favorite wild animal, if I had pet before or not and why, it was totally about everything.

in Part 2, my cue card was about my favorite toy in my childhood and some questions about the details as usual and finally explanation towards my feeling about it.

Ok, it was just the beginning. The difficult part was the 3rd part. Several questions about the importance of toys, comparison between toys for girls and boys and explain why, the effect of family and society on the different toys for girls and boys, the responsibility of toy’s manufacturer about the effect of toys in children education, differences between toys in the past and present, and the most difficult one which I had to ask for 10 seconds to think more was the relationship between toys in the street and children films. I told the examiner that it was a really tough question and I need to think about it. I hope it will not have an adverse effect on my score.

Finally, the examiner asked me about my opinion about my country performance in FIFA world cup and we discussed about the performance of other teams which we had expected to get better results. I do not know if this part has any effect on my IELTS score or not. Maybe, it was just something personal. Totally, it took something around 20 minutes.

Liz, could you please inform me if asking to think in part 3 for one question has significant adverse effect or not?

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ The examiner doesn’t mark your ideas in IELTS speaking. Usually it isn’t recommended to remain silent while you think, it’s better to use fillers (words which fill gaps). However, that was one question only. Your score will be based on your overall performance and NOT on one question. The speaking test lasts between 11 and 14 mins. At the end of 14 mins the examiner will turn off the recording device and the test is over. Any chat after that is personal and not part of your score. So, I think you should relax – I don’t see any problems with your score. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

    These were the questions

    Part 1 .
    —Work or Study–
    Where I was from ?
What do I do. work or study?
    my job responsibility and stuff
. Do I have friends at office ?

About newspapers ..like Do I read newspaper?
which kind of news I like ?
Do I read news from digital devices?
    About writing
    Do I write?
As a child did I enjoy writing
Do I prefer hand written letters or typed ones ?

    Part 2 .
A good photo of me ?
    When it was taken?
    Where it was taken ?
    Who took it ?

    Part 3
    More questions on photo like
How is the photo that is printed different from the one we see on screen ?
In future , would only digital photos exists rather than prints?
How has the people’s mentality towards photo manipulation changed now ? — Not sure on this question , but something like this ..

Do you like looking yourself in photos?
Do you think the culture of just taking several photos at a holiday spot is ok ?
Do you think mobile phone with camera is necessary today?

    — My experience —
I was pretty relaxed during part 1 and part 2 .. Only in part 3 I stammered a bit ..
say the question like manipulation of photo .. I just started answering the question with what came to my mind at that point . then after the test had feeling I didnt hear or understand the question properly . Also while speaking for part 3 .. I was aware that certain words were inappropriate .. say like for intelligence I made a mistake by just saying peoples maximum brain capacity.. But the very next moment , I realised it was absurd.. though I was helpless..
Quite apprehensive if that would lower my score?

Taking the other modules on Jul 7.. will post the experience.

Thank you Liz a lot for the help …
The website is absolutely useful.. Great work..
    Hats off to the effort..

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I think you shouldn’t worry. Of course, “maximum brain capacity” isn’t the prefect synonym for intelligence – but the meaning is the same and the examiner will understand. Your score is not based on one or two answers. It is the overall impression of the level of your English that the examiner will mark. The examiner will also take into account nerves. My impression of your English is that it’s very strong. Lets wait for your results. Meanwhile, focus on the next part of your test πŸ™‚

Section 3: Do you think it’s waste of money to spend on roads, why infrastructure useful, How can governments make improvements etc.
Overall test was very fast, almost like a speed quiz, no time to think, but examiners were incredible nice and polite. Way too many questions and too less time to respond. It’s more like a conversation with arguments, counter arguments than as a series of questions to be answered. Best to be natural. Rote learning unlikely to help.

I pretty much answered everything without any break or pause. The interviewer came up with lots of questions about work, education, additional activities etc. I was spontaneous with my answers and I assume the interviewer wanted to prolong the speech for 15 mins and that’s why she had lot many questions. For Cue card I answered that Work Ethics and Professionalism is what I learned from my work place and explained for a couple of minutes. I noticed a pleasant smile from the interviewer for all my answers. hopefully she must be happy with my answers.

I am hoping a score of 8 or a minimum of 7.5 incase the interviewer thought I was quick with my responses. Eagerly waiting for the 13th of July. All the very best guys n girls πŸ™‚

  156. Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for your help.

    Test Date: 30/06/2018
    Academic Module
    Bangalore, India

    Writing Task 2:

Some people think it is necessary to use animals for testing medicine which are intended for human, while others say animals should not be treated this way (not exactly but this is the gist of the question)
Discuss both the views and give your opinion.

    Speaking : cue card topic

Explain that one special thing you learnt in Maths in your primary school
    What was it
When and How did you learn it
How did it help you in further career (something like this- not sure)

  157. I felt it is my responsibility to post the recent essay t1 and t2 topics as I have benefited a lot from questions given by others.
Writing Task 1 – Write a letter to your friend about a book that you have recently read.
    – write about the book
    – why it will be useful for her/him.
    – how do you buy.
W-T2: Some people think that decreasing the speed of vehicles will increase road safety, others believe there are other options. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Both tasks, I felt, are rather easy ones, nothing to panic, but please guys remember one thing. I thought I was good at writing, because I keep on writing many things, like answering on Quora, writing emails etc and I have been in Medical Transcription for almost 15 years, which gave me confidence in writing, but that is not sufficient for writing task, because here you have to practice the style and format. Introduction, main idea plus supporting sentences or example, next main idea etc and then conclusion. So practice till you get it right. I was just thinking how to get the main ideas and not writing, as I was very clear with intro and conclusion, so I felt my essay to be little clumsy though I felt task response was okay, but I don’t know what happens, lets see. So, please please practice writing, write at least 10-20 full essays before exam.

My listening was good. First was travel agent – customer conversation, next is a map pointing (confused as expected), next sports equipment and places to buy, next as usual research topic and then a monologue with sentence completion. So overall I felt my listening was okay. Friends, here also, please practice Map several times, it is very confusing. Especially for non-native speakers, the way we tell routes is very very different to how native speakers tell the routes. They say turn right at the corner, go furthermore etc. We don’t use such words. We say, go straight, take left, take right. So it is bit confusing and you will lose marks in a relatively very easy task, so practise a lot.

Reading I was not so confident before the exam, but fortunately, my Reading went very well. I could answer all questions. Waiting eagerly for the result. Only suggestion for reading is read lots of articles from where ever you can to speed up your reading and comprehension. Read newspapers, BBC site, etc., as suggested on Liz website. Time was never a concern for me. I was left with sufficient time in Reading and Writing.

One more interesting thing, there were 500 students at the centre and the listening test did not start on time, it started almost 40 minutes after the scheduled time, so take care. Go to wash room before you enter the exam hall, do not take it lightly. You will feel the pressure during Writing as it is the last one and there is AC in the Hall.

Arrive Early at the centre, almost 1:30 hours before the actual time, as it will take lot of time to submit your belongings and get photographed and registered. Do not worry, if you are not photographed in the beginning, you can get it after the exam also.

Please listen to instructions carefully. Check you headphones for sound clarity and adjust volume during the Demos. Lots of demos will be provided because all 500 people should get it right. Just raise your hand, some person will come and help you.

Last but not the least. Take as much help as you can from Liz Website, in fact read the whole website. Hope these suggestions help. For any other clarifications, my lovely Liz is always there to help.

    All the best…

  169. Amrit Kaur says:

Today was my LRW exam. 30th June 2018.
    Location: India
    Module: General Training

Section1- Form filling for booking vacation
Section2- Map of a city for activities for physic like gym, swimming pool, running track etc and 6 places offering services (matching)
Section3- 4 questions of MCQs regarding an art and 6 questions of completing flow chart of a research done by some on an missing art.
Section4- note completion for a supermarket regarding what it had done and conclusion for others.
Overall, first section was a little fast, but section 3 and 4 was very easy. Not confusion was created in last 2 sections as answers were directly spoken.

The reading was too easy. I was able to complete it in 30 minutes. And then took a toilet break. After that I rechecked my answers in 20 minutes. The last passage was about pepper.

Task1- you recently read a book and write a letter to your friend to recommend the book.
    -tell about the book
-how it will be useful for your friend
-how he/she can get that book. (Not exactly in these words)
Task2- discuss both sides and give your opinion
Some people think for road safety lower the maximum speed limit for vehicles on all roads, while others think there are other better ways to improve the road safety. (Almost in similar words)

I did very well as I relaxed myself before exam. I sung many songs and was smiling and observing everything to do so. During reading I just started from solving the questions which are my strengths. But in the end did all very well. For writing, I took first 7 minutes for planning ideas and also wrote uncommon vocabulary words roughly. Then it me roughly 15-20 minutes for task 1 and 25-30 minutes for task 2. When the whole structure is written roughly on paper then writing on time by maintaining quality is possible.
My speaking is on 5th July,2018.
For L and R, at least 8.0 are for sure. For writing, hoping for 8.0. Fingers crossed.

NOW, I am a bit worry whether it would have any bad impact on my score or not.
I will be happy if you tell something about it.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ I do not understand. What is the problem? You asked for water and then decided to continue instead. Why would that affect your score for English language fluency, grammar, vocab or pronunciation?

  182. Exam date- 28/06/18 (GT)
I am really sceptical about a question ‘foreign food’ which my examiner asked me and to which i had answered South indian food . Its really weird because its not a foreign food for me! Does it affect my band score?? Hoping for an 8 now. But,quite doubtful.
I would be having my exam tomorrow for LWR where i need 8,7,7 atleast. Last time in reading i fell short of half a band (6.5). General reading is something that confuses and scares me alot. Have been following your website and your content is amazing. Hope i would be posting my results with more enthusiasm as i m posting the questions now.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your part 2 topic was fine. Your speaking score is not based on your choice of answer or your ideas. Nothing is counted except the English you produce in IELTS speaking. So as long as your talk gave lots of interesting vocab and descriptions of food along with past memories, future hopes and plans etc, you’ll be fine. Remember this is different to IELTS writing where your ideas (how you use them, extend them, link them) are marked. Focus on tomorrow. Good luck!

I appeared for my speaking exam today but my nerves got better of me this time. I don’t know how I have performed.
I have a doubt. I feel that I have been asked long list of questions in part 1. I have reduced posting some questions here as I am not able to recollect now. In part 2, i have talked about a fitness band considering it as a technology and now i feel that it is device and not a technology. How will that impact my score ?
    I spoke too fast

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ On average, most people will get about 3 topics and 12 questions in part 1. Your choice of topic in part 2 isn’t marked, so don’t worry.

  190. Rashmi Regmi says:

    Hi Elizabeth,
Firstly I would like to thank you for this amazing website and resources, it has been immensely helpful. I previously took IELTS in 2015 and consulted your resources and was able to score 7 overall but 8.5 in reading, during that time I didn’t allocate much time for writing and speaking section. This time I have left no stone unturned. I took my ielts exam today for speaking section From IDP, Nepal
    Type of exam: Academic
Date of test: 28th june, 2018
    Location : IDP, Nepal
    Speaking part 1
    There were general introductory questions
    What is your name?
    Where do you live?
Describe your house, what kind of home do you live in?
What is your favourite part in your house?
Do you plan to move from your house in future?
Tell me about a special place in your hometown?
Tell me about a day out, where do you like to go in your day out?
With whom do you prefer to go on day out?
    Part 2
    It was about street market
Tell me about a street market you recently visited
    What did you buy there?
And other question related to it I don’t remember it exactly
    Part 3
Follow ups about street market and change in habit of people shopping these days

I talked a lot in my speaking and the examiner was indicating me to stop by raising her hand occasionally. I didn’t speak for exact two minutes in part 2. There was a pause for about 10 seconds and during that period I was desperately trying to gather thoughts to talk more and I looked at my examiner and she asked me a follow up question, and when I answered it she stopped me at middle. I guess my 2 minutes were up by then. I don’t know what to deduct from it. I know I did pretty well and I know my score will be above 6.5 but I am not sure whether I will get 7 or more. I was aiming for 8 when I went inside.
There is This theory that if you have a Nepalese examiner he/she is inclined to give you less score. I obviously don’t buy it but I had Nepalese examiner evaluating me on both of my exams. When I took Ielts from BC, a Nepalese examiner was assigned to me.

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your speaking part 2 sounds fine. You don’t need to talk for exactly 2 mins. Your fluency is based on your overall performance throughout the whole test, not just one part or one question. I really hope you hit that band 8 !! Always remember you can get your speaking remarked if necessary and it will be remarked in the UK by a senior examiner – as far as I know.

  191. Hi Liz,

I actually said that it was the first time i was talking to a foreigner. She was very expressive throughout the exam and at this reply she made a very indifferent face. I was at my wits end . I apologized for calling her a foreigner and she replied that it was actually true and she was a foreigner. She waved me good bye even when i was stepping out of the room. M really tensed! Plz reply.

    Then questions came regarding
Is it good to visit with freinds or family?
The most astonishing thing of my speaking was my examiner was having short naps in between as it was afternoon time and she was hardly listening to me . At time i was baffled.
But I kept on speaking. Don’t know this was positive or negative!!

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ That’s odd. Certainly not normal. If your score isn’t as you expected, you have the choice to get it remarked – that’s the reason it is recorded. But I do think it’s time IELTS put camera’s in the room as well. Anyway, don’t worry – should be fine πŸ™‚

      • But that effected my speaking. At the starting when she was sleeping I got lost . It took me time to control myself and keep on speaking. And same will reflected in the recording, but nobody will know what happened there exactly.
She was an old lady and at times it common with older people IDP should take care of such things.

Ff up: do you still keep that clothes with you?

Why is it important to wear uniforms?

Does the behavior of a person affected when they wear a uniform?
Do you think tv affects the clothing company?
Do you think clothing industry will shut down in the future because of globalization?

Liz, the day before the test, i met the examiner in a one-on-one tutorial i attended, she is a friend of the english tutor and she was observing how the tutor was teaching, and in my speaking review, we made several mock test and she was there and she listened everything, how i speak and how i answered question, she also know what band score i need. I admit that i am not that much good in speaking and made some mistakes. And in my actual test, i had to revise all my answer though some of my answers are the same answers i said during the mock test. And also, the last questions in part 3 about globalization, i think i misinterpret the questions but i still tried to answer it, i answered like β€œ i think it will not close but there will be more clothing business because they have to fill the growing demand of consumers, etc etc” do u think it will affect my score? And how do you think will be the impact of my performance with the examiner because she was there during my tutorial?

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Examiners are professional people. You will be marked on your language ability for the 14 mins of your test. Nothing else affects your score. The examiner does not mark your ideas in IELTS speaking nor your understanding of questions.

  212. Colombo (Sri Lanka) – General – 26th June

First of all, Thank you very much Liz.
Your tips were very helpful. Below are the speaking questions I got.

    Thanks again Liz…

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Historical period is time recognised in history, rather than just the personal recent past. However, the examiner isn’t making your choice of subject, so you’ll be fine.

I just had one question Liz.. my speaking test was finished super early like 12- 13 minutes.. moroever the examiner interrupted me while speaking in part 3, he didnt allow me to finish my sentences.. like i wanted to say more bit he quickly jump to next.. why so?.. however i was quiet fluent in all parts and i also used nice expressions 2-3 idioms appropriately and some vocab as well.. he was friendly and quite positive.. i need 8 each.. hoping for d best..
thanks again liz.. your website was an immense help for me.. i made a list of all d recent topics from your website.. and practiced a lot..

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your speaking test did NOT finish early. It finished within the correct time limit. How long do you think the speaking test is? It is between 11 and 14 mins – your test was 100% average in length. It is also 100% normal for the examiner to interrupt your answers in order to move on and test new aspects of language. Finishing the answer plays no role in the marking criteria for speaking – ideas are not marked and task completion is not marked. Idioms are not necessarily useful for your speaking score – it is better to use idiomatic language such as phrasal verbs. Hopefully you will get the score you need and will keep my fingers crossed for you πŸ™‚ But if you don’t get that score, you now know why – you didn’t fully understand the IELTS speaking test – what is important for a good score, what to expect, the examiner’s role etc.

its was good but in cue card somewhile i stop talking because i dont find any words and i cover all the questions before! i’m afraid and my examiner is not also motivating me s! i might founf she’s not intrecci at all

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ There are NO questions on the cue card. There are only prompts which you need to add to. This means you need to go beyond the prompts given. If you have the topic of a meal, you should talk about
      1) the place – if it’s a restaurant describe it in detail (service, atmosphere, cost etc) – if it’s at home – describe it
      2) when it happened
      3) who was there
      4) your relationship with those people
      5) what you ate and your memory of the first time you ate it
      6) how often you eat it
      7) how it’s made
      8) what other foods you like or don’t like
      9) what you remember about that meal
      10) what other people think about that meal.
If you still have time you can also talk about 1) if you plan to eat if again in the future 2) your recommendation to other people 3) compare it to other meals etc etc. 4) describe other meals you like or describe a meal you can’t stand.
Can you see how much there is to talk about? Lots and lots and lots of things – this is how you plan your talk and expand it πŸ™‚ I hope this helps πŸ™‚

    Kimdly reply. Thank you

    • Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Your speaking score is based on your overall performance rather than on each part or individual questions. For grammar, it’s better to focus on a range of tenses, rather than sentence structures. Good luck with your results πŸ™‚

Hi there! Very well remembered! I had exactly the same test in London yesterday! In reading I found The stardom extremely difficult as it contained many simple words and it was hard to find a main point. I agree that the speaking part was difficult, I didn’t even have time to read the questions before the conversation started in part 3. The writing felt very easy, I was worried that task 1 was too simple as the numbers were between 100% and 70%, not much too say.
      Good luck with your results!!!
