A listening lesson about the future of libraries. This is an interesting topic that can appear in IELTS speaking, listening, reading and writing task 2. Today, libraries are not only about lending books. They are creative spaces, not only for individuals, but also teams. They are economic incubators and learning hubs. Most of all, the libraries are the entry points to the digital world. They are the way to embrace technology and avoid digital exclusion. Therefore, to improve technological literacy of local communities, libraries should be equipped with relevant technologies.

Here are some suggestions for future improvements of technology in libraries:

  1. Library Bookmark: First of all, the device would be a perfect companion when navigating through the library, by giving turn-by-turn directions to the book the patron wants. The device could also keep track of all borrowed books, as well as remind the user of the return dates.
  2. Delivery Drones: To get the book from a library, you can either go and find it, or you can let it find you. The future belongs to the unmanned flying machines, and just like Amazon drones can deliver the goods to customers, libraries could deliver the books to patrons.
  3. FingerLink: It is a project currently developed by Fujitsu that will let you use digital tools to work with a printed book. It’s a stand you can put on a library desk. It includes two elements: a camera to read the information from the real world, and the projector to display digital information in the real world.
Answers

Spelling must be correct to have the answer marked correct. Using all capital letters is recommended for listening and reading answers.

  1. HUBS
    1. You must have “s”. If you write this answer as “hub” it will be marked wrong. You are being tested on being able to hear the difference between plural and singular.
  2. LITERACY
  3. NAVIGATING
  4. (DELIVERY) DRONES
    1. Brackets are used in the answer key of test books to show possible answers. In this case, it is possible to have the answer “drones” or “delivery drones”. You cannot use brackets in your test – you must choose only one answer.
    2. It is not possible to have “flying machines”. The paraphrase of drones is actually “unmanned flying machines” but it contains 3 words which goes over the word count limit.

  1. Hi Lizz
Thank you for the resources, appreciate you for all the work!
I have a doubt that For this particular section, I marked an answer as “Navigation” instead of “Navigating”, will this be marked a wrong or a right answer? Meaning remains the same though.

    • In IELTS, you must write the word you hear. You can’t alter it. The word “navigation” isn’t given in the audio in relation to that question so it would be marked wrong. All my lessons are aimed at helping people understand the pitfalls involved in the test so they can avoid them in on the day.

  2. Frederick says

    Dear Liz,
you’re doing a great job. Thank you so much.
please, how can we get the Cambridge iekts book and audio?

  3. Unnati Raj says

Just wanted to write down interesting vocabulary I learned from the above topic. They are common but non-native users probably don’t use it as often:
    1. Incubate: This means to sit on (eggs) so as to hatch. However, it can also be used to refer to developing an idea. > To incubate an idea.
    2. Entry-point: A particular place where a person or thing can enter something or somewhere. > They are entry points to the digital world.
    3. Patron: A person who gives financial or other support to a person, organisation or cause.

I am happy because I had little time to prepare and someone recommended your teachings to me, which helped me in my exams. I am grateful.

  9. Karthikeyan says

    Hi Liz,

    Thanks for all your lessons.
I have a doubt. I took listening test and wanted to understand how the correctness of an answer is calculated.

My answer is “Food is awful”, however, it was rated as wrong answer and the correct answer seems to be “Awful food”. It is also described to use not more than 3 words.
I couldn’t understand the difference between them and why my answer is wrong.

Please explain the difference and how to tackle these kind of answers.

    • Liz says

I never saw your listening test or listened to the answer key which means I am not in a position to answer fully. Also you said you took a test and the answer key was different – where did you take this test? IELTS don’t provide answers to their tests unless the tests are in their published books. Did you use an online test on a website which was not official? Please don’t use those tests.
Regarding writing correct answers, you must write what you hear. Not what you think is a better answer. You can’t paraphrase.

    Hi Liz,

Just want to thank you so very much for your website.

I got 9.0 in my listening, 8.5 in my reading, 7.0 in my writing, and 8.0 in speaking.

I really appreciate all the practice tests and on-the-day preparations.

    Thank you so much

  15. Hi Liz!
I had a doubt, In listening part, can we write the answers in the answer sheet after each recording or do we need to write all the answers in the 10 min in the answer?

    • For the paper based test, you write on the question paper and then get 10 mins to transfer your answers to the answer sheet at the end of the listening recording test.

  16. Mihiranga says

What is the correct answer for Q4? Is it “delivery drones” or “Delivery Drones”? With reference to the ” using Library Bookmark” in Q3, I think it should be – Delivery Drones.

    Liz, Please clarify.

    • Capital letters are not important in the listening test. The recommendation is to use all capital letters for the paper based tested so that your handwriting is clear – that’s all.

  17. Deborah says

I want to thank you Liz for providing access to a wide range of materials and an ocean of knowledge for IELTS preparation. I completed writing my IELTS exam and I got a 7.5 overall score with 7,8.5,8,6.5 in SLRW respectively. When I started preparation, I don’t know where to start or how to start… Then one of my friends suggested that your website is the best place for preparation and they are absolutely correct. I reached the page, started exploring slowly, then tried to complete all the lessons on the site. In the end, I left with vast knowledge on every category of IELTS which helped me crack the exam with a good score.

Once again Thank You so much, Liz.

All the best to the guys who are about to take the exam. You are at the best place.

    • It’s great to see your scores. Very well done! I’m glad you found my site and used it well. I tried to include as much as I could to help people prepare for IELTS 🙂

      • Aditya Raj says

Wishing you lots of success and happiness.

  21. Celestine says

Thank you Liz! Your website immensely helped me, and I reached my target band score in just one try. 🤍

    L – 9.0
    R – 8.5
    W – 7.0
    S – 7.0
    Overall – 8.0

In my experience, listening and reading were very easy! I had to focus on my writing and speaking, which for me were the hardest. Well, everything turned out great! Again, thank you Liz! 💯

Good luck to everyone who is planning to take their IELTS test. 💪🏻

  22. Pappu Mia says

Also, are you offering online courses? If yes, what are the fees?

    Thanks and appreciate your support.

  27. Keshav Deshpande says

    Hi Liz,

Thank you for all the lessons.
I have one question here. Will the questions always be in the sequential form? To give example. Question 1 can be answered after listening the first paragraph. Second question in the next para. Is this correct in all listening tests or it’s just this one?

    • I’m not sure what you mean about paragraphs. Are you referring to reading or listening? There are paragraphs in the reading passage. However, questions are not always in order – it depends on the question type. For listening, the questions are in order: 1, 2, 3 etc

    • I work on this site very day. It is as updated as I can possibly make it. However, it is not a substitute for Official IELTS websites. This is a teachers website to learn from practice lessons and build awareness of the test.

  32. xtina.91 says

Hi Liz , in the 3rd question I answered “turn-by-turn directions” instead of “Navigating” because I thought that in sentence completion you should write the word as you listen to it and nowhere in the recording do they say “navigating” . Can you please explain to me why I am wrong?
    Thank you!

    • Did you check the transcript. Listen again and read the transcript at the same time – you will then spot the word “navigating”.

      • Dear Liz,

If someone decided to write the answers with simple letters, how to write the first word in a sentence (If we have to fill)? For example, Navigate or navigate? Can you please clarify this?

  42. Sashoo says

    Hi Liz
can we see the script of the recording on the exam ?

    • No. You listening once to the recording and answer the questions at the same time. The transcripts are provided with the answer key in my lessons – as you can see on the page above. The transcript is not part of the listening test – it is part of checking answers. In the real test, you will not get access to the answers or transcript.

    Hi Liz,

Thank you for the great tips.

While practicing for one exam I see the answer as Diary and I marked it as Notebook.

Also one answer was ‘The Jungle’ I marked it as ‘Jungle’ .

    Are these acceptable?

    • No. They would be marked wrong. Your answer must be 100% correct or it is marked wrong. Occasionally there are two possible answers which are usually written in the answer key as (the) jungle = this means the word “the” is optional. But not all answers are like that.

  48. Thank you so much Liz. This could be the start of my dream. God Bless you always

Hi Liz, Thank you for your helpful videos.
In computer based listening test –
    1) how much time do we get to go through the questions before each audio.
    2) Once the audio is completed how much time do we get to fill in the answer for that particular audio.
    3) Could you please give a distribution of timing for the listening test.

    • Please purchase the IELTS Cambridge test books which contain real tests or go to the BC IELTS website to try their free listening test. The questions you asked are the same for the paper based listening test as well. During a real test will help you get used to timing. You must write the answers as you listen. The only difference between the computer based test and the paper based test is that in the CD IELTS test, you only get 2 mins to check answers at the end of the test.

    Hello Liz,
I recently took an IELTS test. One the question in my listening was a date and the instruction was to use 2 words maximum. The date told in the question was 15th of May. Would it okay if I wrote 15 May?
    Note: I took CDIELTS

    • Liz says

It is 100% fine to do that. We never write the word “of” when we write dates in English.

      • Rslp says

Thanks for your prompt reply. Instead of “15th May”, I wrote “15 May”. I am sure you would have noticed the same in my previous question. But I just want to make sure. Would it be still okay to do that?

        Thanks a lot Liz

        • Liz says

Yes, it’s fine. There is no fixed rule that states you need to use “th” with any number for a date. We frequently write dates as 15 May.

  59. Stareye says

    Hi Liz,
Thank you for your amazing selfless efforts.
I would like to know, is it possible or appropriate to make notes and then write the answers in computer based IELTS too? (Based on your video on Listening tips: tip -19)

    • You won’t have time to do that. In the paper based test, you have 10 mins to transfer your answers onto the answer sheet after the recording has finished. You do not get 10 mins in the computer based test. You get only 2 mins. You are supposed to type your answers directly into the computer – the 2 mins is then for checking spelling.
