    Hello liz
I came across a question, a conversation between 2 students on how many books they will read for the semester. The question asked how many books will Jane read, in the recording it said 57, i wrote down 57. Checking the answers i saw 57 (books)… (just books in bracket ). If i write only 57 without the books will i be penalised?

    Thank u

  2. Hello Liz,
Thank you for all your valuable videos and information in preparing IELTS exam!
I have a question regarding dates. I know that both 10 September and 10th September are acceptable. But, is September 10(th) a wrong answer?

    Hello Liz!

Thank you so much for the awesome advice and exercises you put together. It’s a huge help for my IELTS preparation work indeed.

I’m going to take the computer-based IELTS. I have one question about how to write time, e.g. 1:35pm vs. 1.35pm. Shall I use colon (:) or fullstop (.) between hh and mm? Will my answer be marked wrong if I use one punctuation mark versus the other?

Thanks a lot for your kind advice!

    Ophelia

  4. Hi Liz,

I came across the following instruction in an IELTS paper, and a bit confused about its precise meaning. could you please help?

“No more than two words AND/OR a number”

So does this mean, I am allowed to have 2 words plus a number, as the instruction above says “two words AND a number”?. Or should we read the given instruction to mean either two words or one number (and not both). How should one interpret it?

If it is the former, then my answer “48 North Avenue” is probably right. I have my exam tomorrow ( 10th Sept), so your timely inputs are much appreciated. Thank you so much for all the good work.

    Regards,
    Jason

    • The instructions mean two things: No more than two words and a number / no more than two words or a number.

  5. Got 29/30. Only the last one was wrong.

    • Kirti Vig says

Oh No – I also got confused / misunderstood in the last 30 Number – Answer, so got wrong and got Score – 29/30 …….

  6. I got 26/36 :3

Hello, is it necessary to use hyphen when writing phone numbers?

I wrote 6375559014. But the answer key shows 637-555-9014.

It’s listening test 4 from Cambridge IELTS book 10. Awaiting your reply. Thank you.

    • It is best to use use just a space: 637 555 9014. Or no space is also fine. I would not use hyphens unless the speaker told you to write them.

      • Thanks Liz… You are the best IELTS teacher.
I have one serious question in Cambridge official guide the speaker was telling phone number, the question was asking to write that phone number. I wrote 01444732900 (without any space ) but the answer mention was 0144 732900. Is my answer is deemed as wrong by the examiner? Please make me clear.

        • It’s fine. Spaces are used to make it easier to read, but they are not essential unless the speaker actually says them.

    • Tusher says

      Hello Liz,
I have a question regarding dates. If i write 15 May in the answer sheet instead of 15th May,Will they mark it as a wrong answer.

      Waiting for your valuable reply.

  8. Jesmin says

    Hello Liz,
Is it necessary to have comma in a big number. For example, if anyone writes 1400002 instead of 1,400,002 in answer sheet, will it be wrong?

    • It isn’t wrong to not have commas, but it harder to mark. The use of commas to divide long numbers is to help the person reading it and, in IELTs, the person marking. To avoid errors in marking, use commas.

              Hello Liz,
I am one of the beneficiaries of your numerous online trainings for the IELTS exam practice. And I must say thanks a million for everything. My question is, ithere a particular form of writing of numbers that is acceptable in this exam? For instance; writing number 9 with a curve or straight bottom. Awaiting your answer on this ma, thank you.

              • As long as the number is clear to read, that is all that matters. There are no fixed rules.

      • Munny says

Can we write phone numbers without using dashes?

        • Yes. But make sure the numbers are easy to read. If the word “dash” is used in the recording, you will need to add it.

  14. Hi Liz,
I am used to cursive handwriting, and i am afraid of the markings on cursive handwriting. What shall i do for this? And can we write the listening and reading answers ALL in CAPS ?
    Thanks in advance !

I’m sorry, but I don’t like the sound of who talked in listening!

  16. Hi Liz,

How should we say 1,750,000? One and three quarter million or one and three quarters million?

    Thanks,

  17. Jekaterina says

    Hi Liz,

thanks a lot for all the useful information you have in your blog! I’d like to ask if it would be a mistake in IELTS listening test to write a number 12000 (meaning twelve thousand) instead of 12,000 (with a comma)?

    • It is still correct without the comma. However, I always recommend using the comma because it makes it easier to read and less chances to mistakes with marking.

      • jessica says

hi Liz i am trying to contact you because someone is using your materials for business without your permission i guess. please keep in touch

  18. Hi Liz!
To get a high score on writing, how important is memorasing essays?
    Thank you!

    • NEVER memorise essays. If the examiner sees evidence that you memorised the whole essay, you will get band score 0.

  19. Dear Liz,
If I found the question about currency (ex: $45) and the sign of currency ($) is in the question, should I write it again in my answer or only its number (45)?

    Thanks before ๐Ÿ™‚

    • If the symbol is already given, you don’t put it in your answer.

      • rayhana ferdousi says

hi Liz. if the answer key written is ($25/twenty five dollars(refoundable) instead of that if I write 25 DOLLARS then what happen? is my answer correct or wrong.and what they mean” refundable”.would you please explain that.
        thanks in advance

        • Yes, that answer is correct. The brackets show all the possible options for the answer.

  21. Deepak says

I meant, if you could guide me to the page on your website where I can find separate exercises/lessons for section 1, 2, 3 & 4?

    Thanks !

    • I haven’t divided the exercises per section, only by question type. To practise all sections, you should get the practice test books: IELTS Cmabridge books 1 to 10.
      All the best
      Liz

  22. Deepak says

    Hello Liz

Could you help me with what Deepak Khatri mentioned in point 2 of his comment above?

    Many Thanks, Be Blessed

    • He means that you should practice section 1 many times and then practice section 2 many times. Each section you should practice separately. You should purchase practice test books to do this either online or at your local shops.
      Liz
