Listening Practice for Addresses

IELTS listening practice for addresses. It is common to be asked to write down addresses in IELTS listening section 1. This exercises offers you a chance to practice.

Listening Practice: 10 Addresses

  • Listen to 10 addresses
  • Write down what you hear
  • Not all addresses will be spelled
  • Only street names which are difficult will be spelled

Before you listen, do you know the different types of streets in England? For example, road, lane, street, avenue… How many do you know? Be prepared for addresses that might be new for you.

Hi Liz!Thank you so much for this useful website.I’m a 11-year-old girl and I come from Viet Nam.Do you think I’m too young for IELTS?
    Best wishes,
    Ha

    • IELTS is a language test and if your level of English is sufficient for the band score you are aiming for, it’s all possible. But IELTS also tackles broad world issues and either academic or work related topics. This might be difficult for you at your age. But it’s still something you could try to prepare for. I suggest you get the IELTS Cambridge test books, which contain real tests published by IELTS, and see how you cope with the content. IELTS don’t recommend anyone under 16 taking the test, but there isn’t actually an age limit. So, you must decide for yourself if you can handle the subject matter and topics, as well as cope with a very lengthy, stressful test which lasts for hours without a break. Try doing a full practice test at home under exam conditions and then make your choices. It’s lovely to meet someone who has such great aims at such a young age. Whatever your decision, I respect you, Ha.

    Really really helpful, thanks!

  4. Hello Liz! Thank you sooo much for your content. It has genuinely helped me alot with my ielts preparation.
I just have a small doubt in the listening skill address practice section- There was a question Which said Sea View. In the answer script you have given it as Seaview. Does the space between Sea and View matter? Will I be reduced a score if i dont add the space.

Do let me know! Thank you so much for your help Liz 🙂 Truley Appreciate it

    • Yes, it matters. The word “view” doesn’t mean road or street. So, it should not be separate. If the address was “Sea Avenue” it would be two words because the word “avenue” is a type of street. But don’t worry about this too much. Most addresses will be straight forward and not complicated. And sometimes the recording will show someone mentioning – “by the way, that is written in two words, not one.”

  5. Pavan Kumar Kota says

Can you please help me to find the difference between “C” and “Sea”?

    • For pronunciation, there is no difference. However, one is a letter and one is a word – that information will help you distinguish them in a sentence.

  6. Hi Liz,

What about punctuations? I am used to writing a comma after the number e.g,
    150, Church Street.
    Clarify please.

    • Punctuation such as commas plays no role in the marking for the IELTS listening test. You don’t need to use them but won’t get penalised if you do. However, for big numbers, such as “100,000”, it is advisable to use them.

  7. nilakshan says

    Hi Liz,
You are recommending to write answers in block letters. Should I practice to write in block letters for both listening time and transferring time?.Block letters literally slow down my writing

    -Thanks

    • The person marking your listening test will not see the question paper. Write the answer any way you wish on the question paper. Then use block capitals when you transfer those answer to the answer sheet.

  8. Hi,
I have a doubt regarding postcode?
Just practicing a test and it mentioned BS8 9PU (pause is there in audio between BS8 and 9PU). My doubts are here?
    1) Is it okay if I write it as BS89PU (without space)
    2) If I write with space (BS8 9PU), how many words / letters are used?

    Thanks in advance.
    Subbu

    • If the speaker said the word “space”, you would need a space. Otherwise, you don’t need to worry about it.

  9. Miguel peña says

Thank you it has been very useful.

  10. Jilu Peter says

Dear Liz, I would like to know if there is any difference in pronouncing C and sea. In the address 68C how I can differentiate and confirm if its alphabet C or the word “SEA” as an address can have a name sea in it.

    • The pronunciation is the same. However, I have never seen a house number with the word “sea” in it. A number is only ever given with a letter – 36A, 36B, 36C.

  11. Muazzam says

    Dear Liz,

Yesterday in my IELTS listening test there a part in section 1 where the narrator dictated the address which was a mixture of numbers and letters. One of the letter/number was ‘O’ or ‘oh’ and it was pretty confusing whether it was the number 0 or the letter. I wrote 0 but not sure whether it is right? can you guide pls

    Thanks

    • There are no special rules. It just depends if the person was spelling a word at the time or reading out a post code.

  12. rohith says

    hi
I am confused with the exact hearing of the letter E in the word CRESCENT .
i heard it as A and probably went wrong with spelling .
is there any solution to this it happened many times.

    • This is because the second letter “e” is pronounced as a schwa. The “schwa” is a special sound in English pronunciation. Take a look on google to learn about it. I plan to make pronunciation videos in the future, but not for a while. So, meanwhile, you should do some research on line about this sound.

  13. Vaibhav says

    Hi Liz,

Spelling 2: I penned down as 68C Bridgelane, while your answer states 68C Bridge Lane
Spelling 5: I wrote it down as 94A Nottsway, while you state it to be 94A Notts Way.

Would my answer be correct or wrong? If wrong how do identify the spaces

    • It would be wrong. The words – lane, road, street etc are nearly always given as separate words in an address unless stated otherwise.

  14. Nilanjan Adhikari says

Hi Liz…Greetings! Thanks a lot for sharing so much valuable information in your website entirely free of cost. It is surely helping people like me for many years. I am fortunate to find your website and will try to cover everything you have mentioned here as part of my preparation for the exam scheduled in July.

PS : One small doubt – when you spelled C-R-E-S-C-E-N-T in this clip I heard C-R-A-S-C-E-N-T (checked multiple times) for address”102 Seaview Crescent”. Although this could be my inability to understand but I thought to check with you once.

    • It has been pronounced correctly. Try listening again until you can hear it 🙂

  15. This got to be one of most hardest tests in listening. Thank you for challenging us, Liz! 🙂

  16. I wrote E-Mail for one of the listening question. Is that hypenation correct ? Or Email is the right one? Please help with the right one?

  17. Hi Liz,

In the Cambridge official IELTS guide when the spell out the name of the lane in the video the expected answer is written as follows:

    S-H-A-D-F-O-R-T-H

We are not supposed to put the hyphens right?
Why do they give the expected answers like that?

    -Tejas

  18. Aliasghar says

Hi dear Liz, thank you for these lessons, but i have a question. should i write the streets names by capital letters even for example: Station Road ( station and road with capitals)

    • It is best that all answers are written in capital letters.

      • NAK says

        Hi,
Thank you for the practice tests.

I have the same question, so is it alright to answer each answer with capital (not only related to day, name or address) ?
        e.g. Church Street,
        Narrow
        Black Bear
Too many views on net, I would prefer your word on this.

        Thanks

  19. bekalu thomas says

Hi Liz, its great to listen and follow your tips and presentations. my question is how do you differentiate b/n words and abbreviations in speaking test? for example, i spelt C V U, for seaview street in the above practice test. thank you
    Bekalu

    • An address contains words. A street name is a word. You just need to understand the type of information you are looking for. The more you practise, the more you learn.

  20. Hi Liz ,
I got a question in listening test and was asked to write no more than three words .
    Email address ________
I heard the lady saying helpline@blackcat.com.
I wrote my answer exactly the same way without omitting the @and full stop.
    Will the answer be wrong.

  21. Hi Liz,

This exercise is really helpful. Your pronunciation is clear. I’ll be trying more of your exercises.

    Thanks a lot

    • All my main pages, which contain a loads of lessons, are accessed though the red bar at the top of the site.

  22. Hey Liz,
Does Knotts sound same as Notts?. I wrote Knotts on hearing the audio. How to make sure I am picking up the correct pronunciaton?

  23. Hi, Liz
At number 9 you spelled “Crescent” but you produce two different sounds for “e”.
I spelled it as “Crascent” as you pronounce first “e” as “a” and second “e” as “e”.
    Isn’t it?
    Thanks

    • I think you are talking about the “schwa” sound. It’s the most important sound in the English language – google it and start learning about it 🙂

  24. Irene Garcenila says

    Dear Liz,

Does Knotts and Notts sound the same?

  25. thanks for your website

  26. SaiKrishna says

    Got 10/10 .
When i am practicing tests i am getting good scores but i am lacking confidence that may be the reason i shelve my ielts. Can i get any advice on that Liz?

Thanks alot for the great support and the work that you are sharing with us.

  27. Wafaa Abdoun says

So capital letters are now important in the listening answers?

  28. Hourani says

I got mistake only for number 9 , my score is 9/10.

  29. For 9th address, does speaker say “CRESCENT” or CRASCENT? I am getting confused.

  30. i have taken IELTS exams before and also practiced many listening tests. I have noticed that your accent is not very clear and narration in practice questions is relatively fast as compared to real exam. This is just my observation not aimed at criticizing. If i follow this i can be at no where. However, tips are excellent

  31. melissa says

    hi liz!

i wrote 150 CHURCH ST. instead of “STREET”, RD INSTEAD OF “ROAD”, AVE. INSTEAD OF “AVENUE”

will my answer be considered correct if i use abbreviations?
    thanks! more power!

  32. Hi Ms. Liz,
Just want to ask you one question. Is it acceptable if i put a dash (-) on my answer? For example, if I wrote my answer like 68-C Bridge Lane. Is it still correct? Thank you for your swiftly reply. God bless!

  33. Liz, Thank you so much for the examples.
I have a doubt. Can we use comma between the number & street name like
    150, Church Street
    41, Drummond Square
    Is this correct ?

    • You don’t need commas in your answers.

      • Abdul Moid says

But their is a comma in Question No 6 Flat 2, 22 sleet street.

        • These are practice listening – not IELTS tests. Have you completed one full IELTS test yet? Did you buy the Cambridge IELTS test books? Make sure you buy them because you need to understand the difference between a listening exercise and an IELTS listening test.

  34. IELTS User says

    Great Listening samples 🙂

  35. Hi Mrs Lizz. In the second address, i really confused the word “Brigde” with “Beach” beacause the sound is quite the same. What are there diferences about the pronuncition in 2 words above to distinguish?. If i write “Beach”, will the examiner accept for my answer? Ths Mrs Lizz so much. <3 <3

  36. srini says

    Hi Liz,

can the answer for 94A NOTTS LANE be 94A KNOTTS LANE?
    as K being silent?

    • I don’t think I have ever seen “Knotts” lane in an English address.

      • Hi Liz, I have seen at least one “Knotts Lane” and this is how I instinctively spelt it. As it was not spelt out on the tape, is there likely to be leniency for this? Thanks!

        • In IELTS, the people who mark the papers have a list of answers which are accepted. Usually they do include variations in spelling which are acceptable in English.

  39. Dear Liz,
Thank you for your useful website.
I know we should write the street name starting with capital letter, but should we do so with the words street, road, avenue..etc?
    Thanks

  40. Hi Liz,

Thanks for your great efforts on preparing such an organized website, quite useful.

I have a question about writing rule of addresses.Could the letters spelled after numbers on the recording have been written seperately rather than adjacent ,by any chance ?
(For example, 68 C Bridge Lane instead of 68C Bridge Lane)

    Thanks in advance
    Davut

  41. I got 6 out 10, how it is marked?

    • This is just a practice so marking isn’t important. If you need to test your score, do a full reading test from the official IELTS website.
      All the best
      Liz

  42. Hi Liz,

Hello Miss LIZ, I am from Bangladesh. Your lessons helps me very much. I have a question about reading questions writing on answer sheet. I have seen your listening video about information and tips but i am confused about writing reading questions answers on answer sheet. Should i write all answers with capital letters?

Thank you very much for your support. 🙂

    • Yes, it can be confusing. Also for English people learning Spanish 🙂 It took me a long time to get my Spanish pronunciation right, although I only speak conversational Spanish.
      Liz

  49. Thank u for this wonderful site.My concern is, I can’t check my answers in the listening exercises because they are only shown for a second, i think. What shall I do? Thanks in advance
