IELTS Reading Practice: Google’s Self Drive Car

This is a practice lesson for TFNG questions in IELTS reading.

Google’s Self Driving Car

google-car

Google has finally built its own car from scratch. And it looks similar to a gondola with wheels. The two-seater prototype vehicle is Google’s idea of what the modern automobile should look and feel like if you took the human out of the transportation equation and designed something solely to chauffeur passengers from point A to B.

The car — which was conceived and designed by Google, unlike the ones it previously modified — lacks many of the trappings of a normal car, and that includes three of the most essential parts. It has no steering wheel, no accelerator pedal and no brake pedal. The company that designed the world’s simplest home page also decided to lose the mirrors, the backseat, the glove compartment and the stereo. What’s left are lots of sensors, and a transplant of the self-driving software system Google has built to use on the Toyota Priuses and Lexus SUVs it has trained to drive on highways and city streets over the past five years.

Passage from recode.net

Questions 1-3

Decide if the statements below are true, false or not given according to the information in the passage above.

  1. The Italian gondola was used as a design model for the new car.
  2. The new car is aimed at transporting passengers from one place to another using a chauffeur.
  3. The new car has more features than the modern car.

Answers
  1. Not Given
    1. There is no mention of what Google used as a  design model. It does mention that it likes like a gondola but not that this was a design model.  So, the answer is NG.
  2. False
    1. The answer comes from “designed something solely to chauffeur passengers from point A to B“. The questions says “The new car is aimed at transporting passengers from one place to another…” this part of the sentence is the same as the passage. The word “chauffer” in the passage is a verb = to transport. So, this part of the sentence is correct.
    2. However, the second part of the question sentence “using a chauffer” is wrong. In the question statement, the word “chauffeur” is a noun and it means a person who is paid to drive the car. The passage clearly contradicts this because the new car has no human driver. Therefore the answer is FALSE.
    3. This question is really testing your vocabulary. Do you know the difference between “chauffer” and “chauffeur” = one is a verb = transport / one is a noun = a person who is a paid driver
    4. A false answer means that part of the question statement is contradicted in the passage. The passage shows that it the statement is written incorrectly.
  3. NG
    1. The passage says that the new car doesn’t have many of the features of the modern car – steering wheel, mirror etc. The passage also says that the new car has many new features such as a lot of new sensors and new software. But the passage does not compare the number of features. The passage does not clearly state that the new car has more features than the modern car. There is plenty of information about the features but no clear comparison of the number of features. This means the answer is NG
    2. Always look out for comparison statements in TFNG questions.

  1. Hi Liz,
I am following your website, which is very useful for IELTS test takers. Thank you for such an effort. I have one question from reading section. The given answer is relocation committee; will my answer be marked wrong if I write Relocation Committe, which is how written in the text, even if I meet the word count limit?

Your response will be highly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Shreeti

  2. Vashisht says:

First time I recognised the not given clearly otherwise I always mark as false as I am not able to understand between false and not given
Just watch your videos and felt like I need to be more focus and improve my concentration while doing practice.
I need to ask you one think I joined ielts classes last month but there is no improvement I see earlier I used to scor 6,6.5 and m still consistent on that I wonder where I am not giving my 100%
Please suggest I should continue with my tuitions or else just do practicing with you in enough?

    Thanks to you 😊

    • Doing training for IELTS will not improve your level of English. IELTS is an English language test. To get a high score, you must have a high level of English. This means students should work on their level of English at the same time as developing exam skills.

  3. hey liz, i’ve been studying for 2 weeks and my progress is way beyond that i would of think in the first place , one of the main reasons is you and also any other instructor so keep do what are you doing me and thousonds of people thanks to you

  4. Anshuman Sehgal says:

Thanks Liz for all the effort you are putting in helping out us…God bless you! 🙂

  5. Benedetta says:

Dear Liz. I would like to thank you for all your useful advices. I would also like to ask you some informations. I was practicing my listening skills thanks to some listening tests I’ve found online. The exercise said clearly “no more than one word and/or a number”. The answers were “forests, plants, winter and 25 years”. As I was checking the answers I had no doubt about the last one because 25 years it’s one number and one word. But according to test the answers were “forested areas, plant foods, the winter and obviously 25 years ” . Do you think it’s a mistake of the test maker? I really hope so. Otherwise I didn’t get anything

    • Never do tests online. If you want to do full tests, do the tests published by IELTS: IELTS Cambridge books from 1 to 12.

  6. Thank you Liz, following the your questions on TFNG , i have improved a lot.
I scored 3/3 on this test.

    Cheers
    Rasola

  7. Pinky Pawar says:

  8. Brinda Patni says:

Ye he got two correct answers

  9. This was really challenging Liz! Would it make sense to practice academic reading even if im going to appear for general so that it will be more challenging ?

    Thanks a lot !

    • The questions and skills are the same for both GT and Academic Test. So, you can definitely learn from doing AC practice. But you also need to get used to the GT topics and passage layout – they are different. See these pages:
      http://ieltsliz.com/ielts-general-training-reading-information/
      http://ieltsliz.com/ielts-gt-academic-writing-differences/

      • Hi Liz,

Thank you for helping us in our IELTS venture.
I am still not convinced about the answer of first question. To me, the question seems about whether italian gondola was used as a model or not.
In Passage, it says that new car is similar to gondola, and that inferred that gondola was not used as a model. It is also not mentioned that weather any model was used or not. So I still feel that answer should be false (Italian gondola was not used as a model). Please help me to understand better. Thank you

        • It was a comparison of how it looked by the writer of the article. It doesn’t say anything about Google’s model. NG doesn’t mean that no words are given. It means that the full meaning can’t be corrected. We don’t know that Google didn’t use the gondola as a design model – we can’t say because the passage gives no information about it. It is possible that Google did use it as a design model and the writer has guessed the look-a-like correctly. But again, the passage doesn’t say.

  10. Hi mam
Was a little confused in writing task 2
If a question says discuss both the views and give ur opinion ,can I state, I opine both are important or do I necessarily have to take a stand ,can I’d not agree with both

    Hi Liz
I am going to participate in IELTS on 24 th of upcoming month. I get your suggestion and get a better position but as a proffesional I have less opportunity for practice. In the year 2009 I had first attempted for the test and my band score was 6.5 (ac) but this time I am going to take part in GT.
Is there any preparation time for the test.
I found that 600 hour comprehensive time required for the exam. Is this true?
Your early response will be highly appreciated.

    • You take the test when your practice test scores are repeatedly at the band score you want. The number of hours required depend on each student.
