IELTS Listening; Table Completion Practice

The questions below require you to complete a table and are typical of section 2 in IELTS listening. You need to prepare the columns and rows in the table before you listen in order to predict paraphrasing as well as the type of answer you need to listen for.

Filling in a table is a question type that can come in all sections of the test. The key to tables is to remember that the answers will all come in order so follow the information in the table.

London has uncountable attractions for first time visitors but for those of you looking for interest and history, Hampton Court Palace and Madame Tussauds are unmissable. Hampton Court Palace, which was the favourite royal residence of Henry VIII, boasts 60 acres of formal gardens as well as the famous maze and Great Vine. For adults the price for an entry ticket is 16.50 but a child’s ticket is 8.25 although if your child is under 5, it’s free. If you are only interested in the gardens rather than entering the court itself, then you can get a garden ticket only. It opens daily at 10 in the morning, last admissions are at 5pm and closing time is at 6.

Another popular favorite place to put on your London itinerary is Madame Tussauds. Filled with life size wax models of celebrities, there are 14 interactive zones as well as the amazing Marvel Super Heroes 4D movie experience. Why don’t you take a walk down the red carpet and strike a pose next your favourite film star. Tickets are 28.00 for an adult and 22.50 for all children. That may sound like a steep price but it really is a once-in-a-life-time experience. Doors open at 9.30 each morning and close at 5.30pm.

I am giving the computerised IELTS. If my keyboard doesn’t have the pound symbol can i write “28 pounds” in the text section instead?

    • Sure. That’s fine as long as the currency hasn’t already been given on the question paper.

  2. Oluwadamilare says

    Hello Maam,
Can my answer be written as £28 rather than £28.00? Sometimes its easier to follow the pattern when there’s a penny/shilling cost to the price given.

  3. Grace P says

Thank you for this wonderful exercise. I just want to ask, is it okay to write 10.00 am or 6.00 pm rather than 10 am or 6 pm? I actually saw a comment on this already, but when I tried to open the linked site in your reply, the page wasn’t found. Thank you again

  4. Hi Liz, I was wondering if 5.30 pm is considered a number + a word? because I was making some tests and I found a listening section with the following header “no more than three words or a number”, and one of the corrected answers was 6.30 pm. On the other hand, times always need to be written in the following format ‘5.30 pm’? Thanks!

    • 5.30pm is a number. What is the problem if the instructions ask for “no more than three words and/or a number” and the answer is 5.30pm?

  5. Thank you
    You are cute

    Hello Liz,
I am practicing Cambridge test papers and noticed that i am able to score well (8-8.5) in listening section. However, my score goes drastically low if any section comes with the table completion question. Any tip to improve that. I am watching your videos though to improve the technique.
    Thanks very much.

    Regards
    Saurabh

    • You need to notice the layout of information. Pay attention quickly to headings of columns or rows. Notice if the information will follow columns or rows – the order is important. You can see this by how the information is laid out and where the numbers of the gaps are. See examples of other answers in the columns or rows which will tell you the type of information to listen out for – nouns, numbers, verbs etc. The information will always be presented in a logical order in the audio which relates to the table. Go back over the practice tests you have already done and start paying attention to the layout and information content. Write down the key words that you hear. I also tick of the information in the table as I hear it so I can keep my place in the table.

    Hi liz,
Along with your lessons could you please suggest any other books to practice because i have completed all your listening lessons

  8. Paritosh Gupta says

    Hi Liz.

Thanks for the wonderful lessons, which are of great help in preparation.
I have a quick question, in the opening time could we have used 18:00 instead of 6:00 PM?

    Thanks,
    Paritosh

  9. Safak Duzgun says

How about ”(Pound sign)28 My keyboard wouldnt let me type that sign 🙂

    • You use “£” if the information is not given in the table. Your answer is about what is missing.

      • Thu Thu Lwin says

For computer based exam, How could I type Pound sign? or could I type “Pound” instead of sign.
        Thanks!

        • Most questions will already give the currency symbol which means you don’t need to repeat it in the answer and your answer will just be a number. However, if that isn’t the case, you can write the word.

  10. Hi Liz. Thanks for all your effort. You are a lifesaver. I have a question, is it okay to write POUNDS where monetary values are concerned? I’m taking the test on a piece of paper not a computer and if I attempt to draw the pound sign it might end up looking like something else

    • You write what is missing in the table. If the pound sign is given, then it isn’t missing and you don’t write it. Completion questions require the answer to be what is missing.

Hello, Liz! I’ve seen your main listening page, but, unfortunately, I haven’t found the link for downloadind the audio treck for the listening practice: Table completion – London Attractions. How can I get it? Could you share it if it is possible, please?
As I understood it is for online practice. However I need to download the audio treck in order to let my students practice it without the Internet access.
        Please, help me.
        Thank you in advance

        • Zhazira says

  13. Hello Liz
I,m frantic. Only half of the questions are given in your lesson but when I look at at the answer they are given in full.In this lesson(London attraction)i can only see the table.kindly help me out.

    • I don’t actually understand what you mean. Can you write your comment again in full with examples so I can understand you.

      • Moises says

Hi Liz, it means that the picture doesn’t show the entirely numbers, just one half.

        • Sorry. My website layout changed and this picture isn’t responsive. I’ll try and fix it but it will take a week or more.

    • Manpreet Kaur says

If you are solving questions using phone and not by computer.. Then off the rotation lock and rotate the phone.. All of the questions will be visible.. I was having same problem as you..

  14. Hello Liz, first of all, thank you for sharing your blog, it’s so helpful !!!
I have a question: do the answers come in the order for the listening test?
    Thanks a lot !

    • The answers always follow the numbers of the questions. So the answer to question 1 will come before the answer to question 2.

  15. Sorry, but how should I understand the task №6 – Child price (below the age of 5) ?
According to transcription “child’s ticket is 8,25 although if your child is under 5, it’s free”
…so my answer is “8,25 (free)”, means 8,25 – child price (below the age of 5 – free)! Is it incorrect?
Are such questions, which might be interpreted in different ways, common for IELTS?

    • The table clearly shows that you must give the price of a child under 5 years old. That means only one answer is possible. Yes, IELTS will test you on your ability to follow instructions in all parts of the test. It can be quite tricky.

  16. Arvinn says

    Hi Liz,

Awesome exercise! =’) I got them all!! however, just a bit question I wrote “28 pounds” and “22.50 pounds” will it be mark as wrong? or I should wrote in pound sign?

    Thanks a lot Liz..

  17. Hi Liz,
Could you please clarify a doubt. Generally If a question has two answers as given for 7th question or in any form, Which one we need to use to separate the answers on the answer sheet – Comma or space or Slash.
Is there any rule/chance if it varies according to the question type.
I also believe that there should be a space in between AM/PM and the actual numbers(for time) for 2nd and last question. Please correct me if I am wrong. Does it matter?

    Thanks
    Senthil

    • If one question has a two word answer, then write two words only without symbols or punctuation.

  18. Gayathri says

    Hey Liz,
Thank you for all the effort.
I didn’t know it was your voice.
    Its awesome 🙂

  19. HiLiz,
For question #7 I wrote 10.00am 6.00pm. Is it still consider right answer or should be only 10am 6 pm?

  20. Joaquín Béjares says

    Hi Liz,
Is it ok if I answered 10:00 to 18:00 rather than using am and pm?

  21. Shankha Roy says

Is it plausible to write ‘0’ instead of free ? .. the symbol of GBP is existing in the question

  22. I was just wondering if full stop (.) is also an acceptable way of writing the time, 5.30pm. This is because I’ve been used to write it using colon (:), 5:30pm.

    Thanks heaps.

  23. hi Ms.Liz,
Your teaching videos are very useful and informative.however i would like to focus more with my general training module practice test since i will be taking that test my first week of December this year.i hope you can send me sample videos for the general training module for Ielts.
    thank you so much

  24. Liz mam
I appeared for ielts test recently. In sec 2 table completion task the heading of column was location. Most of the answers were also name of a place like kitchen, canteen, store. In one question speaker said ‘receptionist’ in recording but i wrote reception coz reception is location. Receptionist cant be location.

    Is it correct

    • Words written for answers should not be altered. That means the form of the word can’t change. However, you are also right that “receptionist” is a person not a place. It means you might have misheard the answer. But I’m glad you realise the correct technique for filling in tables 🙂
      All the best
      Liz

      • Thanks Liz but am sure i heard the word receptionist. Infact my other friend also heard the same. We both are confused on this. The sentence speaker sais was ‘ to collect the keys you should go to the receptionist’

        • Unfortunately, I can only tell you the rules of IELTS but I can’t help further without hearing the audio. Good luck with your results!
          All the best
          Liz

  25. Hello Liz,

    Is it okay if I write 10am 6pm rather than 10am / 6pm for question number 7 ?

  26. Vinay HS says

    Hello Liz,

Thank you for such wonderful practice sessions.

The audio says “for child under 5, it’s free”. For question six, there is pound sign. Shouldnt the answer be zero instead of free? Zero pounds sounds more appealing than free pounds. Please do let me know if I’m right on this. Thank you.

    • You must only write what you hear. You can’t change words even if the meaning is the same.
      All the best
      Liz

  27. Hi Liz. I got 5/5. I hope I could do the same when my exam comes. My IELTS exam will be on Saturday.

  28. Nawar says

    Greetings!
If I may I would like to ask about ‘once-in-a-life-time’
is it “lifetime” or ” life time” or is it same? Let’s take “gunpowder” for example, is it wrong if I write ” gun powder”?
Does the IELTS take this into account? If someone writes “some one” instead of “someone”, is it counted wrong?

    Thanks

  29. khaled says

    Hi Liz,
    just one question
    i wrote in number (8) 28 ,not 28.00
in your opinion , it could be count as a write answer
because I am trying to figure out my mistakes

  30. hari pathak says

Voice, tone and frequency of your speaking is like international and everyone can get what you are trying to deliver. But in real test, we usually doesn’t get as understandable as yours sample. If we face same as yours then I think everyone will get more than band 7 by studying with your site.

  31. Aditya says

Hello mam ,, in these practice tests am almost getting all the answers right I in fact have practiced all d Ielts Cambridge practice lessons before taking Ielts exam, last month..but when I practiced, I neve got more than 10 mistakes n so I expected to get at least 6.5 in the exam ,,,,but surprisingly I got jus 5.5 because of which I am having to write the exam again
Could u please give me any suggestions for this ,,,
Thanq so much for ur great efforts……

    • You will need to find where your problem lies. It might be in vocabulary, it might be due to the topics given in the exam, it might be your level of English, it might be the way you tackle questions. You need to practice and spend time discovering what problems you have. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you because I don’t teach you. So, you will need to figure it out.
      All the best
      Liz
