  • B = down

Answers

  1. B = down
    1. to calm someone down = this means to tranquillise someone or pacify someone using music or a soft voice
  2. A = up
    1. to put someone up for the night = to offer someone accommodation at your home (informal)
  3. C = no word
    1. fell down = this is used for people who fall to the ground
    2. the numbers fell = the numbers dropped
    3. the numbers fell down = this is incorrect English and shows a vocabulary error. This is one of the most common errors made by students describing a line graph in IELTS writing task 1.
  4. A = up
    1. to come up with an idea = to create an idea
  5. A = up
    1. to make something up = to invent
  6. B = down
    1. to put other people down = to criticise someone or belittle someone

    Thank you,Liz,but I have problem concerning timing in writhing essays,
    During my practice including my exams I don’t have enough time to prove read my essays.
    How can you help?

    • Most people struggle with this for the following reasons:
      1. They have not prepared enough ideas for topics
      2. They do not fully understand how easy it is to write an introduction and waste time on it
      3. They don’t plan their essay fully which means they make mistakes and waste time changing things
      Do any of these apply to you?
