  1. Hello Liz,

Could you post a sample letter for “Task 1: write a letter to the restaurant manager beside your house about your house repairs.” on your blog. I couldn’t find the proper sample letter

    Thanks

  2. Archelyn M. Bustillo says:

Hi Miss Liz, thank you so much for this,,,,really help me a lot..

    God Bless

  3. Hi Liz
Thanks for your unbelievably useful website.

I was reviewing your 100 IELTS Essay Questions page, and I want to ask how do I know if a topic or question could not come up in the GT paper? For example, is it possible to have the space exploration topic in GT?

    Thanks

  4. Hi Liz and Liz Bloggers,
I read in a particular website that we should refrain from using personal pronouns like “I”, “we” for thesis statements in writing task 2. Please what is your opinion regarding this?

    • If the instructions ask for your opinion and you fail to give it, you will get marked down severely. You can only give your opinion by using My or I. There is no other way to express your own thought.

      • Thanks a lot,
I have always followed your lessons right from one I found your blog, and I do not intend to change now. Personally I beleive it makes logical sense to express opinion with “I strongly agree……” than saying “This essay will agree…….” the latter sounds a bit informal to me and that was why I needed clarification. Thanks for making it clear.

  5. Hi Liz,
Please kindly check my essay on the question below and let me know the areas I can improve.
    Thank you.

Question: Schools are spending more time teaching traditional subjects such as history. Some people think they should rather spend more time on teaching skills that can help students find a job. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

    ESSAY:
Schools now focus more on native subjects like history. Some are of the opinion that they ought to concentrate more on teaching career oriented courses. In my opinion I firmly support the idea that schools should spend more time on subjects that are job oriented as this has huge benefits to the individual and the society.

Firstly, it’s important to consider the reason why most people go to school. Almost everyone goes to school in order to be useful to themselves and become better in life. To achieve these vital goals, gainful employment is an absolute prerequisite. Therefore it is pertinent for school authorities to devote more time and resources to subjects in these areas.

Another point to consider is the nature of the job market. The labour market is very competitive and almost saturated because there are more job seekers compared to available job slots. Therefore, to stand a better chance in this fierce sector, students must acquire all necessary skills in order to be able to make a bold statement and sell themselves more easily to employers of labour.

Finally, we must think of the society. Skilled labour is one of the vital ingredients in the growth of any society and the school is one of the major institutions that oil this engine of progress. Consequently, for the country to thrive and stand tall in the comity of nations, it must have a wealth of skilful entrepreneurs. This goes without saying that teachers hence ought to deliver by laying more importance on subjects that will earn the students better jobs and make them useful to the society at large.

In conclusion, it cannot be overemphasised that in order for people to achieve their goals in life and for the society to advance, schools should focus more on career oriented subjects.

  6. Risalat says:

Hi Liz and all the good people,

I took my IELTS test last year (October), and while I was preparing, I entirely depended on this website and Liz’s YouTube channel. I was confident and had two weeks to prepare. By the grace of Almighty, I managed to score 7.5 (L 7.5 S 7 R 8.5 W 6.5). Credit goes to you, Liz 🙂

Now, as you can see, my score is not that much balanced. I thought I’d do better at Listening but couldn’t. I also want a Writing module score above 7.0; and a combined score of 8 or above. Hence, I’m thinking of sitting for another test coming year. Those who have taken IELTS recently and scored good in Writing as well as overall, please share your strategies with me.

    Best.

  7. Dear Liz,
I need to achieve 7 at writing, I watched your helpful videos and try to exert them in my writing, but I don’t know how to make my 6-6.5 writing 7 at last.
Every one says since writing sheets have been sent to Australia, England or Canada to be assessed, gaining 7 is not accessible any more.

Thanks in advance for your kind real comments.

  11. Sinem Demirkan says:

    Hello Liz,
I’m so grateful to have found you the day before my IELTS exam. The material you have provided was really helpful, thank you for all! I have a question concerning writing task 2. Our teacher told us to compare both points of view in all of our essays. However I realized that you have used different methods for each of the essay proposals. (Opinion, discussion etc.) I think that our teacher want us to write the section 2 according to discussion format but I’m not sure what to do if I encounter an opinion essay proposal tomorrow. Could you please help me, I’m so confused..:(

    • An opinion requires your opinion only. But make sure your opinion does cover all issues in the task.

  12. rouzbeh raissian says:

I just drop this to thank u for all you are doing for ielts takers and us teachers.god bless u.

  13. Gemini123 says:

    Hello Liz,
Thanks for providing these useful lessons and tips . I have a question . We get 2 answer sheets in writing task . If I interchange the answers I.e by mistake if I write the task 1 response on a task 2 paper will I get a zero ? Just wondering if there is a zero score in ielts

    • If you do that, then make sure you write very clearly at the top of the paper which one is task 1 and which is task 2. As long as you make it clear to the examiner, it will be fine.

  14. PERTH, AUSTRALIA
    Academic Test:
Writig Task 1: Bar chart on government spending on roads and transport by 4 countries (Portugal, UK, USA and *forgot last country!).

Writing Task 2: People should look after their health for the benefit of society, rather than for their personal benefit.
To what extent do you agree with this?

  15. hi Liz
Thanks for all the practice lessons. please could you clarify this confusing question for me:
    1. do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
    2. do you think that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages?
my problem is that i don’t know how to go about with the answers again (too much reading. L.O.L.).
Am i to write only the advantages in the essay or to write both the advantages/benefits and the disadvantages in different paragraphs as usual?
I know how to structure the advantage and disadvantage question, but the OUTWEIGH is now an issue.
    thanks.

    • Your task is to answer the question. Do you think the advs are more important than the disads? If you agree then you must explain why the ads are more important than the disads. Always just answer the question and follow instructions.

What happend is that in my task 2 i had a similar one on you site and i wrote your ideas?! I think i dud my best on it while orher part not that much!!

  24. Hi Liz,
hopefully, you will be enjoying good health. Your blog is nothing less than a wikipedia for IELTS test takers. Liz I cannot focus at one thing for long time even 20 to 40 minutes, as a result, I take longer time than usual for every task to complete. I am seriously suffering from not-being-able to finish essay task-1, 2 in the specified time. And my test is around the corner. What should I do?

    • In writing task 1, the introduction should take 1 min. It’s basic and easy. The overview takes time to decide upon and is the most important paragraph. Then you add detail in two body paragraphs. Aim for no more than 180 words. In task 2, you should spend time planning – at least 5 mins. This means you have a clear idea of almost all sentences before you start writing – this makes writing faster. Good luck!

  25. Adnan Shamsi says:

    • There is no upper limit for any IELTS writing task. But try to aim for between 160 and 180 words in task 1.

I have a request, can you please check my Writing Task 2.
I spent approximately 45 minutes writing it. Thank you again.
    Hoping for your reply.

    Question:
Nowadays, more and more older people who need employment compete with the younger people for the same jobs. What problems this causes? What are solutions?

Job competition among youth and older people has arisen in many countries around the world these days. Albeit serious problems have emerged as a result of this, some initiatives could be taken to mitigate such predicament.

First, a major consequence would be the increasing rate of unemployment junior workers could experience because of the large number of people vying for the same work. Hence, the joblessness could often lead teenagers committing delinquencies. To illustrate, in some countries, such as the Philippines, young people resort to petty crimes such as robbing, drug dealing and prostitution for the sake of earning money to support themselves or their family. Second, the abundance of mature aged employees, whilst highly experienced, could be ineffective and unproductive owing to their health deterioration. For example, eye problems like cataract, which is most common in elderly workers, could impede their job performance, and attendance at some point.

Nevertheless, the government and companies could play an essential role in combating these problems. To start with, companies could implement early retirement incentive programs for elderly laborers. Special healthcare and other social welfare payments would help them ensure that they could live healthily for the rest of their life. Consequently, this could create job openings for a younger generation of workers. Additionally, government employers could generate numerous job opportunities for the youth. This could be done and supported by, for instance, a fast- track scheme, a system for rapid training and job promotion of talented young staff. In this way, many of them can be hired and develop their potential to the fullest and make a significant contributions to the company they are working for.

In general, it is apparent that the problems caused by older and younger people prospecting similar job are varied. Notwithstanding this, solutions are available for the government and companies to lessen the ramifications.

    • Did you learn this phrase from a book or website?: “Albeit serious problems have emerged as a result of this, some initiatives could be taken to mitigate such predicament.” The examiner will not accept learned phrases.

but my writing power is to week. can you please guide me what I do step by step.
    how can I improve?
looking forward to your positive response.

  47. Hello Liz!

First of all, I would like to thank you for all that great and enormously userful material you’ve been postiong here!

I had my Academic IELTS yesterday’s morning in Saint-Petersburg (Russia) and my Writing topic 2 was just the same as Tomas’ (about the open-space design).

In Writing 1 I had to describe a linear graph about number of books bought in bookstores, supermarkets and in the Internet. The tricky thing was that it illustrated the data from 2000 to 2020, so I needed to write about some projections too.

I had to stop in the midddle of the sentence in writing 1 as I’ ve spent too much time on the essay (about 46-74 minutes). I wrote more than 150 words though.
That makes me really nervous about my results -____-.

Oh yes, and the last thing. They have changed design of answersheets for writing task 1. Now there are 16 lines on the first page (instead of 10).

    Mariia.

    • Thanks so much for sharing, Mariia. It’s not easy writing about graphs which span from the past into the future. Here’s a sample sentence: “The number of books sold over the internet rose from 1 million in 2000 and is predicted to reach 25 million in 2020.” As long as you write over 150 words you are safe fro penalties and as long as you wrote a clear overview, that will also help. Task 1 is only worth about 33% of your marks. So, fingers crossed you do well. I’ll put a notice up next week about difference writing paper – but I doubt it’s available online.

  48. Hi Liz.
I just had my IELTS exam today on 18th if February.
Today’s writing task 2 topic was:
Nowadays, some buildings such as offices and schools have open-space design instead of separate rooms. Why is it so? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

I found it kinda tough, mostly because I’ve focused on the recent topics, but managed to write it. I would like to take this opporunity to say big THANKS to You!

    Tomas

    • Thanks for sharing 🙂 It’s a tough topic. Open space is supposed to be better because it promotes interaction between staff, reduces barriers between the levels of staff, is usually better for natural lighting and it is a cost effective use of space. The downside is lack of privacy, spread of illness due to close staff work space and distractions to staff which lowers work performance. I’m glad you found my website useful 🙂

  49. Dalila Nelli says:

Hi, I was wondering how it’s possible to write something whit a sense in only 40 min. Any advice?

Liz you are helping me a lot!

        • Funny 🙂 I didn’t think anyone would notice that comment. Sometimes I can’t help having a bit of fun while I’m working 🙂 Thanks for appreciating my website, Anne, and good luck with your test !! 🙂

          • So , turns out i messed up with writing again :/. The other modules were pretty simple, should be easy 8 on those.

  51. Killol patel says:

    hey liz,

yesterday I’ve appeared in speaking test (13/2/17,India)

cue card: two people from the same family.

i didn’t ans. 1 que. but my over all speaking was good.
so howmuch bands 1 ans. can decrease? half or full or one n half????

    • Thanks for sharing 🙂 The cue card does not contain any questions at all, only a few prompts which you use or not – as you want.

      • In speaking I found.. speaker wrote on performance sheet… in task 1 he wrote 450 and in task 2 he wrote 550. Could it be my band?

        • No, it is more likely to be timing. Don’t pay any attention to notes the examiner makes. They do not decide the band score until the end of the test.

  52. Hi Liz,

I couldn’t find video or text about Direct essay / Cause Solution essay. Where to find?
My exam date is 16 Feb.

    Regards.

  53. Mohamed Ali says:

    Hello Liz
Thank you so much for your help.
If the question was as “Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?”
Then, can I deal with this question as ” ….. outweigh …” and I have to give my opinion?

    • You give your opinion – is it positive or is it negative?

      • Hi Liz,
In such a question would it be ok to outline the positive and negative side and then in your conclusion you make your stand whether it is positive or negative. Is that allowed?

        Thanks

        • Your essay must follow the instructions. If the instructions are: “is this a positive or negative development” then your WHOLE essay answers that. If you only answer this in the final sentence, you will get a lower score.

  54. Today i have finishe my writing on 11 feb 2017

    Writing essay 2 for gt

People from fewer countries buy new things while some second hand
    Negative or positive this trend?

    What would be the answer.

I wrote because of standard of living and job

    Is this my right reply?

    • To be honest, the essay question you have written isn’t correct. It contains errors which make it difficult for me to understand. Is this the question:

Fewer people are buying new things and instead prefer to buy things second hand. Is this a positive or negative trend?

This is asking you to decide if this is positive or negative. You MUST state which in your introduction. Your whole essay will explain why. It is not the aim to explain why this is happening.

      • Yesterday topic
In some countries less people buy new things and more buy secnd hand things.
        What are the reasons
        Is it apositive or nagative

        • Hi Liz,

This is the exact question given on 11 Feb 2017 for GT Task 2. What reasons can you give with regards to the statement given other than high price in brand new items?
Do you have any sample answers written for this question?

          Regards,
          Nilu

          • buying second hand: the main reason is cost. With a downturn in world economy, people in many countries can’t afford to buy new things and instead buy cheaper, second hand products. Another reason is that people are becoming more environmentally aware and understand about recycling items.

      • I had the same question, and it was a direct question- People now a days buy new things instead of repairing a broken thing like in the old days. What is the reason behind this?
What are the effects of this?

I wrote my opinion in the end, was it the right thing to do with a question like this? And i have 1 para intro , 2 para to the first question , one para to the last question and one para to the conclusion. I have another paper on 16th so please advice.

        • Sounds fine. You can give your opinion in the conclusion for this as a final statement or miss it all together – your choice as the instructions don’t ask for your opinion.

      • Hi Liz, I just took the IELTS exam in the same day as Sam, in Geneva.
The Task 1 was the following:
You want your child to have a day off school for a family celebration.
Say why is it important for you that your child attends to it and say how will you “make up” for the missed lessons.

        Task 2 asked:
In some countries, instead of buying new things, some people prefer to buy second-hand things (funny they use the word things).
What do you think are the reasons for that.
Is this a positive or a negative trend?

Just wanted to let you know how awesome your site is, thanks for it, and I just love the way you speak 🙂

        Ana

        • Thanks for sharing 🙂 I’m really pleased you are benefiting from my website 🙂

          • Hey

I took the exam on 11th as well -Academic.
The question in task 2 was same as Ana described but the second part of question was different. It was something like – What are the effects of this?.

I wanted to ask you whether Essays like these require conclusion or not?
And also i wrote 1 para for into, then 2 para for first question, 1 para for the second question and then the conclusion Para.

Please tell if this was a right approach.

            Thanks

            • All essays in IELTS require a conclusion. See this page: http://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-2-last-5-mins/

              • I had the same question on 11th Feb test.

                1. Introduction (40 words)
                2. Paragraph 1 (reason 1 => due to low average income) 80 words
                3. Paragraph 2 (reason 2 => to be updated with latest models of phones, cars and gadgets they sell and buy used things frequently) 60 words
                4. Paragraph 3 (My opinion => i think this is positive in two sense ; first it improves cashflow in country thus boosting economy and secondly low income people can have more things in less budget) 50 Words
                5. Conclusion (50 words)

              • How is that !!?????

But teacher you did say that in task1 conclusion is not important!!????
                We just should write
                Into
                Owerview
                Body1
                Body2

I did this way on my task1

                Am i right or false!?????????

                Thaaaaanks

                • Task 1 is NOT an essay. Writing Task 1 is a report which contains an overview. Don’t confuse task 1 and task 2. Task 2 = essay, Task 1 = report.

              • Hi Liz,

is it okay to write 3 paragraph plus one introduction and one conclusion in the writing task essay 2?

                thanks

        • Hey anna

I had the same writing question in writing test .

I had the same wrinting task 1 n 2 as you.

          Is this correct ?

What was ur answer for writing task 2 ?
